Supplemental: Carol Costello has ruined the world!

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2014

But first, Paul Krugman’s column:
Liberals should be very angry, furious, with CNN’s Carol Costello.

But first, a note about Paul Krugman’s new column.

In his column, Krugman discusses the ways plutocrats just keep winning with political programs which hurt the bulk of voters. This was his first explanation:
KRUGMAN (10/24/14): One answer is propaganda: tell voters, often and loudly, that taxing the rich and helping the poor will cause economic disaster, while cutting taxes on “job creators” will create prosperity for all. There’s a reason conservative faith in the magic of tax cuts persists no matter how many times such prophecies fail (as is happening right now in Kansas): There’s a lavishly funded industry of think tanks and media organizations dedicated to promoting and preserving that faith.
We wish, wish, wish that we saw liberals and progressives trying to explain this state of affairs to misled voters in “middle America.”

We rarely see that effort being made. That brings us to Krugman’s second explanation, where we think his political sensors go significantly wrong:
KRUGMAN (continuing directly): Another answer, with a long tradition in the United States, is to make the most of racial and ethnic divisions—government aid just goes to Those People, don’t you know. And besides, liberals are snooty elitists who hate America.
Earth to Krugman: Many highly visible putative liberals really are “snooty elitists!” In that passage, Krugman seems to deny this obvious fact—and he mixes this apparent denial with a somewhat snarky claim about race, a topic which should never be discussed in a casual manner.

We think the messaging there is bad. This brings us to Carol Costello.

In that second passage, Krugman seems to roll his eyes at persistent political claims about liberals being “snooty elitists.” Unfortunately, snooty elitism is on wide display in various parts of the putative liberal world.

Everyone can see this fact except us snooty liberals! Costello’s recent display on CNN is one of the worst such displays in years.

Why do tons of people in middle America believe that liberals are “snooty elitists?” In part, because ridiculous people like Costello keep going a million miles out of their way to reinforce the storyline.

At issue is Costello’s recent, deeply ridiculous report about Sarah Palin’s family. For Politico’s report on Costello’s absurd performance, you can just click here.

We’ll have to link you to the MRC’s NewsBusters to let you see the full two minutes. Therein lies a tale.

Without question, you totally ought to click this link and watch the tape of Costello’s performance. Ridiculous people like Costello, behaving in these ridiculous ways, are the leading edge of a (frequently accurate) stereotype—a stereotype which keeps getting liberals defeated.

Click this link and watch that tape! You will be looking into the face of 1) astounding journalistic misconduct and 2) persistent liberal dysfunction and defeat.

It would be hard to get any dumber than Costello is on that tape. That said, can you think of other examples of this type of behavior?

Sad to say, we can!

In Krugman’s column, he seems to suggest that the image of liberals as snooty elitists is a silly stereotype. When he links that patently bogus suggestion to snarky claims of his own about race, he ensures that large numbers of voters will disregard his claims.

In fact, a mountain of snooty attitude lies behind that image of liberals. Meanwhile, everyone knows about snooty elitist liberals—everyone except us snooty liberals!

Everyone knows it. All too often, snooty elitists R us!

The unbelievably clueless Costello just did you a world of harm. Liberals should be very angry about her ridiculous conduct.

With respect to NewsBusters: Way back when, in September 2000, we did an hour on C-Span’s Washington Journal with our host, Brian Lamb, and the MRC’s Brent Bozell.

In fairness to Brent, he played well with others that day. But in those days of liberal somnolence, we couldn’t have imagined a time when his outfit, the MRC, would actually get something right.

Today, we liberals have emerged from the woods. All too often, our conduct is Costello-level absurd.

Today, the MRC is sometimes right. People like the snooty Costello just keep sending them gifts!

  1. How do we know Carol Costello is a liberal? Because she's on CNN? I know nothing about her except that she's a TV anchor. But if we are expected to be held responsible for eveything anyone on TV who can be portrayed (accurately or not) as a liberal, then we are doomed. All of this stuff is just an entertainment show. We have zero control over it other than to shut it off. That's my recommendation.

But that 147th Recon Air Wing was somethin' though. Kept Oklahoma from invading Texas.

Of course POTUS Clinton's failure of military service is relevant when you bring up POTUS Bush43's actual military service.

That you disparage those who are stationed stateside during the Vietnam War, the Air National Guard, and those who fly combat fighter jets says a lot about your selective outrage.

But of course you consider the Vietnam War to be an illegal war and those who fought there as "baby killers". Why all the colic about Bush43 not seeing combat in Nam?

We think we are looking into the post of a blogger who has completely lost it. Or perhaps it is just a murky stew of loose wire and screw.

BOB has just become a shill for one team in the Thrilla from Wasilla.

Here is a little of what he left out:

    http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/bristol-palin-explains-brawl-defends-blames-media-attacks/story?id=26398625

Please follow that link and its own link back to the eyewitness report on ABC at the time of the incident.

But of course what BOB left out he makes up for with the two things he added in:

    1) He has decided for us that Carol Costello is a liberal, and that all liberals suffer, and deservedly so the snooty fools, bad politcal consequences for acts by a television journalist.

    2) That this terrible behavior merits yet again a mention of his past appearance with someone, proving BOB is adopting the I-I-I-I coat of arms he awarded to Rachel Maddow recently. We think it was when Rachel disappeared all the Hispanics. She did a good job. BOB hasn't mentioned Hispanics since. He rarely did before.

  10. I think Carol’s big mistake was not adding a brief simple straightforward disclaimer that while she thinks Bristol’s potty-mouth laced audio is hilarious she in no way condones a male physically abusing a female.

Other than that, when the borderline rude and unsophisticated Palin clan elicits mocking from cable news, Inside Edition, Entertainment Tonight and gossipy celebrity websites for being more like the TV shows Jersey Shore or the Real Housewives of New Jersey I don’t see that what Ms. Costello said was worthy of most of the faux outrage that she has received.

When you act like stereotypical white trash you are going to encounter some level of criticism and ridicule. Seems like fair game to me.

I would say to Costello critics from the tea party, most people ridiculing the Palins are doing it not because of the Palin family's politics. It’s because of their uncultivated (but humorous) lifestyle.

Can you post any news anchor at MSNBC/CNN/PBS delighting in the misfortunes of Biden's kids? No? Why did Costello feel confident she could make a fool of herself mocking the 911 call and believe her job as an anchor would not be in jeopardy?

    7. A grifter is a con artist. You could argue that Palin was working a major con on voters as VP candidate given her lack of qualifications and inability to answer even simple interview questions. But that doesn't make much sense to me because (1) a real con artist would be much better at faking it, and (2) many male candidates have been as unqualified as Palin and been taken seriously. I do think there is a lot of sexism in the way Palin is treated compared to Rick Perry, for example. I dislike it that this crap is coming from my own party. And I always vote -- but not for any candidate that buys into this, including team Obama.

You want to know why Costello mocked drunk grifters? Ask her. I'm not the cable news whisperer.

Google finds north of 700K hits for the phrase "Faux News"; add Olbermann to the search and the result is half that. So the usage is widespread far beyond KO. Insufferable devotees of insufferable grifters both use "lame stream."

  16. Conservatives tell people 24/7 that the media are all liberal, except Fox. As a result, it is reasonable to say that Costello will be taken, by some people, as representative of what liberals think. Who are those people? How many of them start with open minds? Probably quite few. But whenever Bob wants to flay the left (which is always), they become legion. And people like Costello, about whom we know nothing more than her profession, become "liberal figures." In other words, Bob willingly goes about spreading the conservative fiction that the media has a liberal bias, because it's convenient for him. Just another day in Bobville.

    4. In fact, I work in an environment where 90% of the people are conservatives, and some of them mock Palin, when she's discussed at all. The rest just want to forget her. Oddly (not really), when she was first announced as McCain's running mate, they unanimously adored her -- I was actually embarrassed for them, the adoration was so intense. Take what else from it what you will, but the implication that only liberals mock Palin, thus Costello must be a liberal, is false. And of course, it's possible -- just remotely, I know -- that Palin is one of those people who are mocked because they ought to be mocked, politics aside. Of course, only a liberal could possibly say such a thing, as Palin is so obviously a serious and weighty figure, except to a mindless partisan

Imagine that there was a big fight at Mallia Obama's school. Suppose, during the fight, a boy had assaulted Malia and thrown her to the ground. Suppose an upset Malia than made a bunch of intemperate comments that were caught on tape. Now suppose that Rush Limbaugh played this hypothetical tape on his show, prefacing it by announcing: "I’m just going to come right out and say it. 4. deadrat, according to this your version of that Rush Limbaugh story isn't what happened. I've summarized Limbaugh's explanation below. More details are available at the full link. This Youtube snippet from the actual show supports Limbaugh's version.

Either way, Carol Costollo looks terrible. Either she did something as bad as Limbaugh at his worst, or she did something as bad as false stories that Limbaugh's enemies made up about him..

Rush has always maintained the incident was an accident. On his show four days later, Rush offered an explanation to his audience. First, the show played, “Who’s sorry now” in the background and Limbaugh pointed to himself. Then he said:

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m sorry. Let me tell you very quickly what happened last Friday night. There was a new in list and new out list that was published in the newspaper. The writer said in, cute kid in the White House; out, cute dog in the White House. Could we show the cute dog in the White House who’s out, and they put up a picture of Chelsea Clinton back in the crew. And many of you people think that we did it on purpose to make a cheap comment on her appearance. And I’m terribly sorry. I don’t–look, that takes no talent whatsoever and I have a lot of talent. I don’t need to get laughs by commenting on people’s looks, especially a young child who’s done nothing wrong. I mean, she can’t control the way she looks. And we really–we do not–we do not do that on this kind of show. So put a picture up of her now and so we can square this."

They then showed the picture of Chelsea Clinton. She had a displeased look on her face, as if to show that she was not too happy with the mistake.

    8. You brought up Limbaugh, tut-tutting about a hypothetical Limbaugh piece about daughters of politicians. I'm just pointing out that there's no need to resort to the hypothetical.

And, yeah, I can decide for myself whether she was hurt. I've seen the pictures she's posted of her supposed injuries. This isn't an issue of politics. Some well-known members of America's First Family of Grifters got caught in a drunken brawl, and they got the standard media attention given to all celebs who make fools of themselves in public.

  19. Krugman is actually wrong about the first point. Most of the misinformation is NOT about how "tax cuts for the rich are good for the economy". Republican politicians and their defenders almost never, never, never admit that the tax cuts are "for the rich".

Their tax cuts are for the people, and those nasty Democrats vote against tax cuts and for tax increases. Oh, the spin is everywhere. Did you know the accursed payroll tax cut was a tax cut for the "middle class"? Did you know that the AMT needs to be patched permanently because it is impacting the middle class?

Just never mind that the richest 20% get 92% of the benefits from the AMT patch, according to CTJ. Never mind that 46% of the benefits of the payroll tax cut went to the richest 20%.

Of course, thanks to the idiots from OWS, now much of the top 20% is officially part of the middle class, they are in the 99%.

But I know that boring discussions of taxes are far less important than knowing all the details of the thrilla in Wasilla.

Krugman is apparently unaware that the RWNM is not selling the public on "tax cuts for the rich" it is selling the public on "tax cuts".

Then again, Krugman does the same thing, using his pulpit to claim that Obama's tax cuts for the rich are really tax cuts for the middle class and tax increases on the rich.

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: "First of all it isn't enough to say I don't agree with what Bundy said. This is a despicable statement. It's not the statement, you have to disassociate yourself entirely from the man.
