Location remains undisclosed: We're off on yet another mission of national import. It will take us to an undisclosed location in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
We don't expect to post again until some time this weekend. That precise time remains undisclosed.
On Monday, we'll start the third week of our four-week report, Where the Test Scores Are. Next week's reports will explore this theme: Where the Achievement Gaps Are.
Also next Monday: the first debate. We'll provide some historical background.
How can someone who has no respect for core American values make America great again?
ReplyDeletePoliticus describes Trump's attempts to intimidate journalists who ask him questions he dislikes. His latest speech about freedom of the press shows he has no understanding of the importance of the press in our society:
http://www.politicususa.com/2016/09/21/vile-anti-semitic-brownshirt-y-war-trump-supporters-journalists.html
Then there is his attack on freedom of religion. Not only is he threatening Muslims, but he is also threatening anyone with religious views that differ from his own.
He has been emphasizing his "One people united under One God, saluting one flag" slogan at his rallies. How can there be "One God" in a nation with many different religions and where 16% of people identify as not religious? There is a reason why our constitution prohibits establishment of a state religion.
If this man stood up and declared that he intends to be our next dictator, shutting down the press and imposing restrictions on our freedoms, the danger couldn't be more clear.
And our press is worried about calling him a liar over the birther thing. We are arguing about the wrong things here.
The journalists will still have jobs if Trump becomes dictator. The Ministry of Truth will need lots of scribes.
DeleteAnd, that's actually a reason to vote for Trump. Journalists will beat up on President Trump's lies and corruption. They won't be as tough on President Hillary Clinton's lies and corruption.
DeleteI would love to see an analysis of who is voting for Trump vs Clinton among people based on answers to the following two questions:
Delete1. Have you read 1984?
2. Who came first, Stalin or Lenin?
But then, David can probably answer yes to #1, so maybe I also have to ask "Did you understand it?"
David, did you miss my point -- the journalists will be sued and in jail and their papers shut down and those not in jail will be shut up by the death threats which will morph into real physical threats with power behind them. That is how a nation becomes a banana republic.
We have far less to fear from Hillary Clinton. If all she wants to do with her power is use her private email server, we will be in very good shape.
Troll @ 1:02 PM - since you your reasons for voting for Trump are exactly contrary to the truth, they don't support your conclusion. For example, a valid reason for voting for Trump would be if one is a misogynistic, xenophobic, racist who thinks of the ideal America as something out of an Ozzie & Harriet episode.
DeleteIt's easy to see why you are trolling for Trump.
David, did you miss my point
DeleteDavid doesn't come here to discuss or listen to anyone else's points.
He came here today to shit in the punch bowl again and condemn future Madame President for future lies and corruption
This is what Trolls do. Come to prog blogs to drop little provocative turds. And then skulk away when people show what a lying shitstain he is.
David is a twisted bitter old man.
i got your point, AnonymousSeptember 21, 2016 at 1:14 PM. You have lots of company in your belief about Trump, but there's no basis for it. Trump is not going to physically threaten reporters, he's not going to murder six million Jews and Gypsies, he's not Satan, etc. But, reporters who hate Trump will aggressively report any dubious action he takes. That's a good thing.
Delete"Trump is not going to physically threaten reporters, he's not going to murder six million Jews and Gypsies, he's not Satan, etc."
DeleteIf the GOP base finds this out, who's going to vote for him?"
Troll is embarassing himself once again over candidate that suggested employment of "2nd amendment rights" against his opponent if he loses.
Delete"By the way, if she gets to pick, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don't know," Trump said.
Hope you get the chance to meet up with Corey Heidelberger of Dakota Free Press when you're in Aberdeen.
ReplyDeleteI hope he wins.
DeleteThis afternoon Chris Matthews was fawning over Trump's statement about the female officer who shot a man with his hands up. He said: "Was she scared? Did she choke? If she choked, there are some people we can't have doing this job." (Think I got the wording right.)
ReplyDeleteIn his comment, there was emphasis on the word "she" when he described the officer and by the end of the comment it is clear he is not only talking about the officer but also making a reference to Hillary. Trump has never shown this kind of concern before, in his sickening smarmy concern-voice, so this time there is a purpose to it -- it is a dig at women on the police force and a dog whistle to his male police supporters who resent their female colleagues, as well as a sly suggestion that Hillary will choke.
And what does choke mean? I've only heard it as a sports reference, when someone misses a freethrow due to nerves. What does it mean here?
But my larger point is that Chris Matthews was falling all over himself to agree with Trump and to praise his response to the shooting. All the overtones and subtext went right past him. I believe he is not a very smart person.
It's important for the posters here to understand that when Mr. Trump wins the election it is a statement about the system within which the president operates, a system that is broken. Simply, Mr. Trump has positioned himself as someone outside that system. Mrs. Clinton has not. Because voters have a choice, all they have is a choice, a caprice, they will use it to take a stand against the broken system. So don't get too hung up on Mr. Trump himself, he was just clever enough to position himself outside the system at a time when the system is completely broken and the people feel helpless. I agree with you that Mr. Trump has the intellect and ability of an average Sean Hannity listener. And his policies will be that of an average Sean Hannity listener. There's a chance he will be successful but there is a much larger chance that he will be a disaster but that is what we get. We have a broken system. Sometimes you have to burn the village in order to save it. Don't you understand? A vote for a player within a corrupt and broken system is no vote at all. People will vote against reason and even their own interests if they feel like their vote counts. Ie their vote is against the corrupt, broken system.
ReplyDeletetheir vote is against the corrupt, broken system...
DeleteWe did that already.
When we elected President Obama and kicked GW Bush and his corrupt oily administration out on their crooked asses.
Only problem was, he was black, which seems to have driven half this country feverishly insane.
Exactly, we did that already with Obama. I disagree about the race card though. We do it again with Trump in 6 weeks because the system is still broken and the choice of Mrs Clinton represents a choice for it. Ie no choice at all. Obama didn't fix the broken system just like Trump won't. But you have to understand how the role of human choice and helplessness plays into this situation.
DeleteWhen you say the system is broken, you sound like the people who say our schools are broken. It's just shadow boxing.
DeleteHow is the system broken? It's slow and inefficient, but that's how the founders built it. The system is anti-mob rule. The only thing recently that broke was a few weeks of funding when the house repubs shut it down, and they got a ton of crap for that. The system is working fine, otherwise. The rich get to choose what is debated and passed, just like it always has been. We are the imperial military world power, creating desperate people everywhere. These shat-upon people try to give the US a hot-foot every once in a while, just like it ever was.
I bet the rich think that for a short period in the 50's and 60's when the government helped to build a strong middle class, that's when it was broken.
Personally, I think our nation is stronger with a vibrant middle class with purchasing power, but I fear the only reason that happened was because of the vivid memory of the Depression that was still alive mid-century.
This system of government has been working well for 240 years. The people who believe the system is broken are just lemmings who like to get excited. One of the biggest reasons that these people think that the system is broken is because we let in too many immigrants. Do they know what's written on the Statue of Liberty?
I doubt there are more people who feel that the system is broken than there are people who feel like it is working fine for them. The economic numbers suggest that there are too few people who feel helpless, assuming your premise about their voting is true.
DeleteWe all live and work within a system that is working far better than anyplace else, with the possible exceptions of Germany and Scandinavia. "Throw the bums out" may attract attention but it is not the dominant mood of this country.
When I speak about a broken system I am speaking about a government that is no longer for the people but instead is for corporations and money. I am speaking about oligarchies, income inequality and Citizens United. You may believe that the system is working fine and it may be. If enough people think like you do then Mrs. Clinton should be fine come November 8 and we will all be spared a very wild ride.
DeleteAnon at 10:49 AM:
DeleteYou have written a word salad of gibberish. A real twisted roundabout way of encouraging people to elect Trump for some bizarre strange rationale.
I don't know what the fuck Trump represents, mainly the worst elements in our country.
One thing I do know however; he is completely totally incapable of doing the job, ie, governing. Which leads me to understand that the real people running our country under his administration will be unknown to us, shadowy figures bending him to do their bidding.
That is not a step in the right direction, if you know what I mean.
Go away.
10.56 - have you looked at the polls regarding trust in government? The public’s trust in the federal government continues to be at historically low levels. Fewer than three-in-ten Americans have expressed trust in the federal government in every major national poll conducted since July 2007. I think you need to examine where you stand regarding people's feelings about our system. You may be right of course. To me, it seems you are looking at the glass as being approximately 3/10ths full. I do hope you are right though and thank you for your thoughts.
DeleteMm. I'm not encouraging anyone to do anything. I agree with you totally about our next president's capabilities and the directions they will be taking us. I'm just trying to help you understand "what man wants is simply independent choice, whatever that independence may cost and wherever it may lead." To me, it seems as clear as day. I'm saying that Mrs. Clinton does not give people a choice and Mr. Trump does.
DeleteMm You don't know what Trump represents. What he represents is choice. That is my point. I could be wrong though. It's just an interesting way for you to look at the his election beyond playing the race card and sneering at those who do not think exactly as you do.
DeleteMan wants "independent choice", therefore they will vote for a proto-fascist con man in hock up to his eyeballs with Russian oligarchs and the communist Chinese government. Plus he's "building a wall". Got it. Thank you for that pile of horse manure.
DeleteIt's just that when Trump wins, I know so many of you will be enraged. You will look at his goddamn smiling face and your blood will just boil at how such a charlatan could have slithered his way to the top spot. And Trump himself will take credit which will make it all the worse. Hannity himself will smile and offer the deepest smugness capable by man. The whole thing will be a lot to take not to mention the resulting disasters. All I'm trying to make you understand is that his presidency will have occurred because of something much deeper, not because of him and not because you are wrong about your beliefs about him but because of what he represented to so many of us as opposed to what Mrs. Clinton represented. (Choice)
DeleteMm. Yes that is my point. Horse manure? We will see won't we? Let's hope so.
DeleteHow does Hillary Clinton not represent choice?
DeleteBy being a part of a corrupt system. By being an insider. Inside a system that is broken or perceived as broken that people feel helpless to change or even engage. A vote for her is a vote for that system which feels like no vote, no choice at all because the system is unmovably corrupt or perceived to be. Trump put himself in a position to offer people a choice, or what feels like a choice outside of or against that system. Je can't change it, just as Obama couldn't change it but these are the deep impulses that will lead to his November victory and Mrs. Clinton's November defeat.
DeleteTrump is not outside the system. He is a con artist and crook. If he is not careful, he will find himself in jail at the end of this campaign, as his tax evasions and fraud are uncovered by reporters. David was a better troll than you are.
DeleteTrump's own campaign is a scam. He is paying his own corporations $500,000 per month out of his campaign funds, for example by charging his campaign exorbitant amounts for their office space. He is a fraud.
DeleteAs we get closer and closer to election day, be on the watch for these Trump Trolls infesting progressive blogs.
DeleteEasy to spot, cause they're so fucking stupid.
I'm not a Trump troll. I will be voting for Mrs Clinton in the first hour of the first morning of early voting. I don't disagree that he's a mess. I'm merely trying to help you understand the very human motivations that will lead to his election. If you are so smart - tell me. Has man traditionally made rational choices? Isn't history riddled with illogical choices and folly? You think it will be be different now? We will a all make the rational choice en masse? Wait and see.
DeleteInteresting to know that this is a progressive blog.
Delete@ 2:01 PM -concern troll's concern duly noted.
DeleteHilarious that Trumpeteers whine about a corrupt system while supporting a candidate who has made blatant dishonesty his campaign theme and corruption a business credo and lifestyle choice.
DeleteTheir solution? Tear the system down. Replace it with? [crickets]
I think the system is broken. Trump however ISN'T the answer. I'm not confident Clinton is either.
DeleteIt might be, but it can be repaired. Correct. I am very confident that she is the answer. PRO TIP: unicorns aren't real, so looking for them is a waste of time.
DeleteDoes the corporate state (of which the clearly broken corporate media is a part) still allow for meaningful piecemeal, incremental reform, or, is the best we can hope for under the current system "one step forward, two steps back"?
DeleteP.S Trump's chief economic and proposed Treasury Secretary, corporate raider Carl Ichon has described the Trump agenda as "unleashing the power of corporations". As if they've been hamstrung for far too long.
@ 9:19 PM - ask her:
Deletehttp://www.elizabethwarren.com/stop-trump
By the way, she's voting for Hillary Clinton.
As for your PS, yet another example why voting for Hillary Clinton makes the most sense instead of wasting your vote or not voting.
"I think the system is broken. Trump however ISN'T the answer. I'm not confident Clinton is either." Of course she's not. She is the system. When do you think she will change the system? Before or after her lunch with Lloyd Blankenfeld and Henry Kissinger? If Obama couldn't change it, no one can.
DeleteThere's nothing wrong with a system that works for people. Obama helped everyone recover from the financial meltdown. Clinton will maintain peace and prosperity just like her husband did, while improving lives in ways big and small. Seems to me, being the system will make it much easier for her to do that than coming from outside it. Who cares what the system is doing if people's lives are improved. It is crap to think that she will only help the rich when her entire life (and her husband's) has been devoted to helping those in need.
DeleteAs far as the system being broken, whether you believe that or not, the solution is neither Trump or Hillary. Their job is to run things (i.e., government), not fix things. I am always frustrated every election cycle when I start hearing about everything that is wrong with the system. Then, when the election is over, these same people just criticize everything government does until the next election. Of all the places on this Earth, this is your one chance to really make a difference. I want to see every one of you whiners show up to every political meeting by both parties, participate in every citizen initiative, donate substantial sums to the leaders you admire and generally participate in democracy every single day. That is the "choice" that matters, not the election. If I could get half you guys to work to change election laws in your states, we wouldn't have to put up with the corporate shills we have now. If you are not participating, that just means you have given up and, in my opinion, you have forfeited your right to have an opinion. If the system is broken, then fix it.
Delete"Of all the places on this Earth, this is your one chance to really make a difference."
DeleteMaybe that's the sad part of it all, that this once so-called great bastion of pluralist democracy has become a giant ruse. Perhaps we now live in an entrenched corporate state of which there is no turning back. At least by traditional electoral means. As you suggest we only elect it's caregivers, with little or no ability to reform.
What if each party holds a meeting at the same time on the same night?
DeleteOne of the dilemmas facing the writers of our Constitution was to give lightly populated (slave states) representation on the same footing as heavily populated states. They did this with two legislative bodies.
DeleteThe Senate would get two representatives per state, favoring lightly populated states, while the House would get representation based on population. The slave states wanted more clout, so a compromise was reached giving them 3 additional votes for every 5 slaves.
Arguments against a single body were that an elite Senate only would devolve to a new aristocracy and dictatorship, while a House would allow rash action by an uneducated populace, much like the plebeians of Rome and their Tribunes.
The doomsayers were right. We now have two houses that support a new type of aristocracy AND react injudiciously to the clamor from a poorly informed electorate.
For this reason Trump supporters have placed a plague on both houses. Their conscious goal is chaos and anarchy. Anarchy for the hell of it.
If Hillary were a better candidate Dems could champion her without making paranoid claims about Trump's supposed anarchism, Nazi-ism, racism, etc.
Delete(BTW wouldn't a facist government exert rigid control over citizens? Wouldn't that be the opposite of anarchy?)
I said nothing about fascism or any replacement for what we have. Trumpies haven't thought out any future. You are reading more into this than I denoted. Perhaps you are a tad paranoid?
DeleteTrump gives voters a chance to feel like they are preserving their sense of individuality, just like Obama did in 2008. Hillary does nothing of the sort.
Delete"Perhaps you are a tad paranoid?"
DeleteThat would be a step up for this troll.
@3:58 PM - mm had it right. This close to the election, expect pretenders like this commenter, who makes no points other than to illustrate his/her HDS.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteWhen Hillary inevitably wins by at least 4-6% Trump will lead an armed revolution of Teapeoples.
DeleteGravymeister -- You didn't make those claims, but perhaps you've seen others make them. Several of my Facebook friends (and their friends) routinely call Trump a Nazi, a racist, etc.
DeleteOnly an idiot would call Trump a Nazi. His daughter(the one he said he wants to sleep with)has married a Jew and she even converted to Judaism.
DeleteBroken system alert! This is one way the corporate state operates against the greater public interest.
Deletehttp://www.pogo.org/straus/issues/congress/2016/the-insidious-and-totally-legal-way-industry-infiltrated-congress.html
Congressional staff "fellowships", fully funded by and there to do the bidding of corporate special interests.
Here's Witless Troll @ 7:18 PM's own Godwin's Moment last February:
Delete"Gore's movie was a great work of propaganda. Leni Riefenstahl would be proud."
I hear it is impossible for a sociopath to be embarrassed.
"Broken record alert!" @ 9:25 PM.
Delete@ 9:06
DeleteSo you're you're saying Trump is the kind of Nazi who is fanatically pro-Israel and who marries his daughter into a Jewish family and lets her convert to Judaism? Really? Are there any other Nazis who have done that?
Speaking of Trump:
Delete[from Drum's blog comments]
"Oh, here's some aside from the debate conversation: https://twitter.com/ivortossel... Debate idea: After a candidate speaks, moderators correct each obvious lie. Deduct the time it takes from the candidate's clock.
That seems like a good idea.
I especially like the deduction part. But then time penalties could easily exceed the total time allotted for the debate.
I'm fine with that.
That give the advantage to Donald. They'll have to end the debate immediately after his opening statement."
That's for sure.
@10:25
Delete"Trump doesn't escape being a Nazi just because he scapegoats a different religion than Hitler did."
He probably doesn't speak German either. Can't be a Nazi if you don't speak German, right?
Trump will approach the debate the way he did at the Commander-in-Chief Forum. It wasn't so much lies as it was evasion and pure gibberish.
Delete@ 10:51 PM - if you translate your thoughts into Gamergate-ese, maybe Gloucon X will understand better.
DeleteHe'll still burn the clock with his lies.
Delete@10:25 I thought it was a good, informative bit of investigative reporting. Too bad if it upset you.
Delete@ 11:01. True. But as was pointed out with Chuck Todd, these reporters don't even know how to frame a question in a way that forces a bullshiter like Trump to answer. So his debate will be mostly gibberish, punctuated by lies. These debates usually just solidify the base for each candidate, unless the reporters take sides and try to embarrass either one candidate during the debate or afterword with spin like they did with Gore in 2000.
DeleteHitler wasn't the first evil man. Who knew?
DeleteAccording to Ivana, The Donald kept a book of Hitler's speeches on his nightstand. I think it is still there.
"According to Ivana, The Donald kept a book of Hitler's speeches on his nightstand. I think it is still there."
DeleteAnd yet they inspired his daughter to marry a Jew and convert to Judaism
He has also married two women of Slavic origin. He's never going to get into the SS if he keeps this up.

Delete[QUOTE] At the [1968] Aug. 28 debate in Chicago - the penultimate encounter in the series, with an estimated 10 million people watching - things began with relative calm. But it didn't stay that way, and before long the men began exchanging words that one simply didn't hear on TV at that time (see box below).
Vidal called Buckley a "pro-crypto-Nazi," a modest slip of the tongue, he later said, because he was searching for the word "fascist" and it just didn't come out. Inflamed by the word "Nazi" and the whole tenor of the discussion, Buckley snapped back: "Now listen, you queer," he said, "stop calling me a crypto-Nazi or I'll sock you in you goddamn face and you'll stay plastered." Smith attempted to calm the exchange with "gentlemen, let's not call names," but the damage had been done. [END QUOTE]
People will do anything to preserve their sense of individualism. This is Trump's appeal. He makes people feel like they matter, like their choice matters, that, through him, they can 'say' something i.e. exist. Consequences be damned, it is better to exist as an individual than not. Plus, they don't have the option of voting for Hilllary. It's impossible to vote for someone who calls you a racist and whose supporters deride you as an idiot. These are the uncomfortable and cramped terms that define our situation as we make our way into the blazing unknown horizon of the fall.
DeleteToo abstract. The only Trump supporter I know is very specific as to why: He's against mass immigration. He has generally voted Republican mostly for that reason. He has contempt for Republicans like Bush and Rubio who are pro-immigration.
DeleteOne swallow does not a summer make though does it? Just be ready as a rational, chosen one to face a perplexing and perverse circumstance come November because of our human need to exercise individual choice.
DeleteYes, well put. Many people will wait until after the three debates between perplexing and perverse before they choose.
DeleteWe are all gazing into the phantasmagorical, bloody abyss of human irrationality. Many of us here have been hypnotized to think that it is an unusual situation when actually, it's quite, quite normal.
DeleteMaking rational choices limits individually - the rationality is making a choice not the individual. Therefore irrational choices will be made in order to preserve individuality. Every day under the gilded pathways we traverse, lay the bones and destruction of this irrationality. Turn on the TV and you will see an opera of this irrationality. Today most likely you will open an industrial food package and take a big bite of it.

DeleteMeanwhile, today the NY Times suggests that when Clinton champions the disabled it is just a cynical move to gain their votes. Never mind that her first efforts to help disabled children were right out of law school when she was running for no office at all, could have taken a lucrative job in a corporate law firm but instead chose public service. The NY Times is the one being cynical, not Clinton.
ReplyDeleteThen they endorse her.

ReplyDeleteI have only listened to the Scott video on the radio. Does anyone know what Scott was doing when his wife kept begging him not to: "Keith, don't do that..." etc., right before the shots are heard. No one discussing this on the radio has described it or asked (much less answered) any questions about that part of the video.
ReplyDeleteThe video is useless. It doesn't show anything because she is too far away and you cannot see into the car, but there is audio of the cops saying "drop the gun" multiple times.

[page 75 23:44] ...One, the first thing I think we have to do is we have to deal with income inequity. I love Bernie, but I’m not Bernie Sanders. I don’t think 500 billionaires are the reason why we’re in trouble.
I hope my grandkids grow up to be -- don’t listen to their parents, who all decided to do something, run the World Food Program, run the -- another will be attorney general, another one run a social organization for at-risk youth, you know. They got all this education and, you know, I should have had a Republican kid. (Laughter) So when they put in the home I’d have a window with a view, you know what I mean? (Laughter) But now there’s going to be no view.
But all kidding aside, we have not seen this huge concentration of wealth. And the folks at the top aren’t bad guys. I get in trouble in my party when I say wealthy Americans are just as patriotic as poor folks. I found no distinction. I really haven’t. But this gap is yawning, it’s gaping, and it’s having the effect of pulling us apart. You see the politics of it.
And the country’s not going to stand for it forever, so we have to deal with the tax code. It’s wildly skewed toward taking care of those at the very top. It favors, overwhelmingly favors, investors over workers and it’s riddled with unproductive expenditures.

Delete[page 76 25:20] My economics teacher at the University of Delaware taught me the reason for a tax expenditure is to promote a social good, generate people taking risk, increased productivity. Raise your hand if you think that 1 trillion 300 billion plus dollars in tax expenditure whether even half of it meets that -- well, two-thirds of it meets that criteria. As I say where I come from, get a life.
Look what’s happened with the latest tax cut. Once again those at the very top get the biggest breaks and what do we have to show for it? Even our Republican friends are now beginning to admit there’s no evidence these tax cuts are being put to work in the economy. No new growth, just more debt. And that puts middle class programs that they rely on and they’ve worked for at real risk.
Paul Ryan was correct when he did the tax code. What’s the first thing he decided we had to go after? Social Security and Medicare. Now, we need to do something about Social Security and Medicare. That’s the only way you can find room to pay for it.
Now, I don’t know a whole lot of people in the top one-tenth of 1 percent or the top 1 percent who are relying on Social Security when they retire. I don’t know a lot of them. Maybe you guys do.
So we need a pro-growth, progressive tax code that treats workers as job creators, as well, not just investors; that gets rid of unprotective loopholes like stepped-up basis; and it raises enough revenue to make sure that the Social Security and Medicare can stay, it still needs adjustments, but can stay; and pay for the things we all acknowledge will grow the country.
Second, we’ve got to educate our people....
