Their various shapes and sizes: Why don't more of The Others trust Us? Why aren't they willing to think and act in the ways we liberals prescribe?
We're willing to tell them how to think and what to believe. Why won't They just fall in line?
You're asking some very good questions! In our view, today's op-ed column by Nicholas Kristof helps us supply an answer.
There's a great deal to ponder in Kristof's piece. But the gentleman starts like this:
KRISTOF (10/25/18): It’s not about immigration. It’s about bigotry. There! Just like that, in his opening paragraph, Kristof takes steps to ensure that The Others won't listen to a single word he says. He doe this by dropping our team;s favorite bomb. from which he then runs away.
Bombs come in various shapes and sizes. In the past few days, real bombs from the material world have arrived at selected addresses.
Idiotic reactions have been churned Over There. Then too, we have Our Own Tribe.
Our world also contains the metaphorical "bombs" we've often discussed at this site. Kristof opens with one of those rather destructive bombs, then never explains why he did.
"It’s not about immigration," he says. "It’s about bigotry." He says that right at the very start of his piece. But he never explains who the "bigots" are. This means that the bigots are Them.
Over Here, in our liberal tents, we thrill to cold opens like that. We're reminded that we're the decent, good people—which, fairly often, we aren't, depending on grading standards.
Kristof opened with a bomb, then made no attempt to explain it. He never explained why the bomb had appeared. But don't worry—every liberal knows.
So do all The Others.
In the rest of his column, Kristof presents some interesting facts about problems facing America. Early on, though, he also makes it a point to mock Donald Trump's spelling.
That's another type of tribal bomb. (As we've noted in the past, it's a Brian Williams favorite.) We've been dropping these bombs for decades. The Others all understand them.
Kristof offers important observations about the use of fear in demagogic, unhelpful campaigns. This use of fear is quite unhelpful.
So is the dropping of bombs.
At the end of his unhelpful column, Kristof describes an actual state of affairs. We think he's right in most of what he says in this final passage:
KRISTOF: I fear that we in the media have become Trump’s puppets, letting him manipulate us to project issues like the caravan onto the agenda. That's the end of his column.
Trump is right that, although there’s no evidence of it, “there could very well be” Middle Easterners hiding in the caravan. It’s equally true that the Easter Bunny “could very well be” in the caravan. Speaking of Easter, Jesus Christ “could very well be” in the caravan.
So let’s stop freaking out about what “could very well be” and focus on facts. Here are two: First, the Caravan won’t make a bit of difference to America. Second, we have other problems to focus on, from drugs to homelessness to health care, that genuinely constitute a “National Emergy.”
Kristof wants his fellow citizens "to stop freaking out about" nonsensical, demagogic claims. Instead, he wants us to "focus on facts."
In principle, this is a very good idea. But the state of play is this:
We liberals can focus on various facts as much as we like. If we can't get Others to listen to Us as we offer these facts, our facts will fall on deaf ears.
As he closes, Kristof identifies three states of affairs which he regards as major problems. But as he finishes his plea, he turns again to Trump's spelling problem.
(Earth to Kristof: Donald J. Trump is likely "dyslexic." Stating the obvious, this is the least of his deeply dangerous problems.)
(For the record, Williams, who loves to play the bad spelling card, got himself fired from Nightly News for making us Songs of Himself. That was after he spent two years trashing the craziness of Candidate Gore's deeply troubling wardrobe selection. This sent George W. Bush to the White House and Iraqi children to death.)
Kristof closes with Trump's bad spelling. Everybody Over There knows what such jibes suggest. According to major anthropologists, we liberals have always played this game, and we always will.
"Who Do You Trust?" Johnny Carson once asked. The unexplained bomb with which Kristof begins helps explain why They don't trust Us.
Your lizard is saying that this is all wrong. We should all throw our lizards away.
Opposite Kristof today: Opposite Kristof's column, Gail Collins is complaining, in her usual rollicking way, about the stupid things Trump says. Funny that! We still remember the stupid things she used to say, in 1999 and 2000.
Children died because of Collins, who's been phoning it in for years. That said, this is the way of the New York Times, brightest known light of our own self-assured liberal tribe.
Gore, who was impossibly boring with all his proposals, reminded her of "the underside of a swan." Those were truly the good old days, except for the children we've mentioned.
Still coming later today: This morning's astonishing "Noteworthy Facts" from the brightest light of Our Tribe.
National emergy? You want a national emergy? I have two national emergies for you:
ReplyDeleteI. Nuclear weapons
II. Climate change
Now enjoy Joseph Haydn's Drumroll Symphony performed by Charles Mackerras and the Orchestra of St Luke's.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94_p5wTkx8w
They do, but Mitch McConnell and the gang are making believe the richest nation in the history of mankind is too broke to deal with poverty.
DeleteDefine emergy.
DeleteWhy hasn't the Violence Against Women Act been renewed? The answer to David's question is probably the same as the answer to this one.
Delete@12:50 First of all, Trump is dealing with poverty very well by creating conditions that lead to more jobs.
DeleteSecond, it's not the case that poverty causes crime. My immigrant family were poor when they came here, but they didn't resort to crime, nor did millions of other poor people.
Will PA like it if we all form a caravan and go there for those coal mining jobs? There are 3.8 million of us in Los Angeles.
DeleteNo one said that 100% of immigrants are criminals or poor or related to you, so what is the significance of your anecdote?
Do you understand the concepts of 'states' and 'borders', dembot?
DeleteIf not, why don't you study for a few minutes, then come back, and try to make a point? Okay?
Being from Russia where people are not allowed to have maps, you may not understand that there is migration within the US, largely driven by need for jobs. It is why so many African Americans live in Chicago. Migration based on bigotry explains why so many white people live in Idaho. States have borders but they haven't been allowed to close them since the great depression and the demise of Jim Crow in the 1960s. This march was shown in the film Grapes of Wrath, except the guys with sticks were the badguys.
DeleteYeah, sure, dembot. I'm destroyed by your powerful "being from Russia" 'insult'.
DeleteBeing zombie, you clearly have no idea what the 'caravan' in the news is. The brain cell still left in your dembot skull can only generate a word salat full of 'bigots' and 'white people'.
Tsk. It's a sad one.
"salad"?
DeleteLike a "salad" of frozen water and ice?
"Just like that, in his opening paragraph, Kristof takes steps to ensure that The Others won't listen to a single word he says."
ReplyDeleteWell, this is the elections time again, and he's tasked with making noise that is likely to attract zombies to the polling places.
By the way, I'm really looking forward to the fascist takeover you were promising a while ago, Bob. Any day now, presumably?
The "use of fear is quite unhelpful. So is the dropping of bombs." Especially the genocidal Saudi enterprise in Yemen. Even more unhelpful is snarking at types like Collins and Kirstof while having nothing at all to say about Bernie and his long-continuing efforts to stop the US-enabled genocide--exemplified in hsi column today in the op-ed page you (in general rightly) revile--which always are silently condemned by Clintoinites like Collins, Kristof, and your good self. You go on and on about the 2000 election and liberal "unfairness" to Gore. You don't seem to mention you liberals' perpetual conspiracy of silence against Nader, nor, in 2016, their enabling that pathetic loser Clinton to run and lose against her preferred "Republican" friend.
ReplyDeleteAs I recall, both Nader and Sanders were defeated at the polls. You can be upset that the Democratic party didn't support these guys (and vice versa) but they were also rejected by Democratic voters and by the US populace. As a member of a political minority group, you take your lumps. That is how a democracy works. There wasn't a conspiracy to silence Nader or Bernie Sanders or anyone else. Their arguments were not persuasive.
DeleteDeomcrats are going to get slaughtered in the midterms.
ReplyDeleteBetween the illegal immigrant invasion the military will be forced to stop, and the fake bombs with glued on nonfunctioning clocks, you have to be relieved that Democrats are so stupid because if they knew how to handle these things they might be competitive. As it is, they can't even compete with Trump.
DeleteCan't wait until Trump decides he needs to send the national guard to inspect each of our California basements to root out the illegals hiding there. No warrant, no knock, guns ready in case someone resists.
DeleteCan't wait until Trump sends his national guard into California (and Texas and Arizona and New Mexico) classrooms to pull kids out of class if they don't happen to have the right ID papers handy and have brown skin or a slight accent or speak Spanish too well, or might have some unidentified Middle Eastern DNA.
While Melania chants "Be Best" in her pith helmet.
Yes, I know California homes don't have basements (due to earthquakes), but I saw one on The Rookie, so that must be where criminals hide.
Delete"...they can't even compete with Trump."
DeleteKristof's quote, which Bob highlighted, said the same thing.
It would be cool if Trump got an Achilles helmet to wear to state functions or just around the house or whatever.
Delete@12:31
DeleteKristof is talking about the media, not Democrats.
'All people of good will and the entire peace-loving humanity..."
DeleteThat's a funny way to describe the Mainstream Media, but whatever works for you.
Kristof doesn't say or imply that "The Others" are all bigots. While there are surely bigots amongst "The Others", Kristof is clearly talking about Trump, who he says is making appeals to bigotry to manipulate this issue.
ReplyDeleteSomerby thinks it is OK to equate calling someone a bigot with sending bombs through the mail.
ReplyDeleteNothing any liberal has said about Trump supporters justifies the violence inherent in sending a pipe bomb through the mail. That is an act of violence. It is attempted murder. It is indiscriminate and cowardly and it has nothing to do with politics. And today Somerby implies that it is justified by Kristof's calling out bigotry.
Just as with Trump, every time I think Somerby has been as offensive as he can be, he tops himself. This pathetic old man is deranged and today has forfeited any claim to the term liberal.
The plastic black things are fake bombs, so "attempted murder" doesn't apply.
DeleteInvestigators are saying that those plastic black things have all the components of bombs are would be capable of blowing up. They are plastic to avoid metal detectors. They include glass shards as shrapnel for the same purpose. They were also built to be lightweight, to go into the mail without having to be delivered to a post office, as heavier packages must be.
DeleteMy wife keeps some glass shards from the beach in a plastic cup. It doesn't weigh much. It's not capable of blowing up because it's not a bomb. If I glue a watch to it and mail it, it still won't be a bomb.
Delete@4:31, that isn't what happened, but you know that.
DeleteDrink up, 4:31.
DeleteHere is a better example of bigotry toward the right, expressed by someone on the left:
ReplyDeletehttp://rudepundit.blogspot.com/2018/10/the-future-new-york-times-profile-of.html
Nevertheless I will bet dollars to donuts that the ultimate perpetrator of this act winds up being someone like this.
The right seems to think that if the bombs were non-functional that makes this not a real terrorist act. They are wrong. Terrorism is intended to scare people into behaving (or not behaving) in certain ways. It is intended to suppress political participation. It doesn't matter if the bomb is real and kills innocent people (it will never reach the Clintons or Obamas without passing through many innocent hands first) or if it is symbolic and only scares people. The impact is the same. The goal is the same. Because it is the threat to the non-targeted that constitutes terrorism, not the injury caused by the bomb.
Right-wing conspiracy theorists don't need actual bombs to make up theories about those on the left. Their claims need not be based on any facts at all. They make shit up. There is no motive for Democrats to have committed any kind of false flag action. It isn't necessary to them either. The acts of bigotry are sufficient, and they have come fast and furious during this election, ranging from throwing out voter registrations in Georgia and elsewhere, to burning Beto O'Rourke lawn signs, to the Florida robocalls against Gillum, to the hacking of California liberal candidates to keep them out of the general election. Who needs a bomb threat when you have all that systematic effort to undermine our election process?
And today Somerby plants the word bomb throughout his essay, linked to the claims of bigotry in Kristof's op-ed. Who has been linking bombs to the left this week? Hint: it isn't the liberals. It is folks like Limbaugh and Trump and the false-flag crew. And Somerby.
So to Somerby, the most important thing in Kristof's op-ed is his use of the word "bigotry." So be it.
ReplyDeleteBut it is crucial that opinion writers talk about and point out the cynical manipulation of voters, of language, of truth, that Trump is guilty of, and the way the press covers it. Both of these are important topics in Kristof's column. But Somerby would rather fixate on the use of the single word "bigotry." and leave the bulk of the column largely unexamined.
Why don't "They" trust "Us?" Could it have something to do with 30 years of cynical manipulation by right-wing media and deliberate attempts by the Republican Party to demonize liberals and tribalize their voters?
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, yes. And Bob is the guy who pointed this out better and more often than anyone. I realize that he's now trying to show how, instead of finding a way to counter that propaganda, the "liberal" media are finding ways to mirror it, which isn't a good thing. But I think he's missing the forest for the trees - yes, the corporate media are awful, and a big part of the problem. But avoiding the elephant in the room isn't the answer, and bigotry is a damn big elephant in the Republican Party.
DeleteKristof is one guy with an opinion column. How is he "the liberal media"?
DeleteYesterday Somerby blamed Rebecca Traister for not speaking up about the wrongs done to Gore et al. when she would have been 15 years old.
Somerby is not doing well these days.
I don't think that Kristof, by himself, is "the liberal media," and as noted earlier I don't find his language wrong. But Bob focuses a lot of time on MSNBC, correctly in my opinion, and that (especially Rachel Maddow) definitely constitutes "liberal media."
Delete"definitely"
DeleteWhy, because it's owned by a corporation and corporations are "definitely" liberal?
"We're reminded that we're the decent, good people—which, fairly often, we aren't, depending on grading standards."
ReplyDeleteWhy doesn't Somerby just come out and accuse us of virtue signaling, like the right-wing stooge he has become?
Republicans could tell the bigots to hit the bricks today if they wanted to. But the KNOW, they wouldn't win an election for at least a generation. Which is why they don't do it.
ReplyDeleteThe Republican Party knows they ned the bigot vote to win elections, and, unfortunately for the Republican party, the bigots now know this too.
I'd rather be a member of a party that is, hypothetically, more attractive to bigots than the one that made sure violent felons can once again vote, wants innocent men presumed guilty on an allegation, and endorses killing youngsters by the millions.
DeleteBut surely the D 'party' is far more attractive to bigots. Their whole 'identity-politics' ideology is pure 100% bigotry.
Delete1;41,
DeleteAre you intimating it was the Russians, and not the "white working class" voter, who elected Trump?
@1:34
DeleteWe would settle for having innocent men investigated on an allegation. They should have the right to have their name cleared and their innocence affirmed on the basis of fact, just as the person making an allegation has the right to have his or her claims addressed.
People committing assault shouldn't get away with their crimes simply by claiming to be innocent.
Today Trump is claiming he has never used an insecure non-government cell phone in the White House. Does anyone believe that is true? Shouldn't it be investigated, given that national security is at stake and Trump has told so many, many lies?
We would like to investigate you, dembot. We know, from well-placed sources, that you're a big enthusiast of goat-fucking. Bestiality is a crime in most states.
DeleteWill the goat testify? I would pay to see that.
DeleteSorry, they expect their privacy to be protected.
Delete"We would settle for having innocent men investigated on an allegation"
DeleteGood luck with that. If I call child services on you with an allegation, you're going to be good with an "investigation"? Thanks for playing.
All 35 year old allegations involving drunken high school kids copping a feel should be ignored if not ridiculed. And I don't even like Kavanaugh.
DeleteIf you don't know the difference between copping a feel and traumatizing sexual assault, you shouldn't be let out in public. Minimizing wrong doing doesn't change what happened, nor does 35 years. We expect Supreme Court nominees who haven't committed major felonies against women, and nominees who won't lie to Congress under oath.
Delete4:18,
DeleteLet's go. Like those who threaten to sue me, I look forward to the "discovery ' and "cross-examination" of you under oath.
When do we start?
"Kristof closes with Trump's bad spelling. Everybody Over There knows what such jibes suggest. According to major anthropologists, we liberals have always played this game, and we always will."
ReplyDeleteIf The Others know what such jibes suggest, why do they go ahead and vote for Trump anyway? I think maybe they don't know.
If Trump is dyslexic (which hasn't been demonstrated factually) and not demented, he can always use spellcheck the way the rest of America, which cannot spell either, does. Dyslexia doesn't prevent someone from caring whether he gets the details right about his activities, whether construction or mob-bossing. If you don't want to be thought stupid, don't act stupid. Even the Others know that. But they want to aggressively assert their right to BE stupid. Where does that come from? Somerby never tells us. He pretends our insults drive them to the polls to vote for the crappiest candidate they can find. Against their own interests. Over and over.
Somerby needs to think a little deeper about this and come up with a more plausible explanation. One that takes into account that The Other won't even start reading Kristof, because they don't read anything for pleasure or information, or even civic duty, because they don't read (like most of America).
They go to bars and talk to their friends over beer. Their friends get their info from Limbaugh and Alex Jones and from their friends, who are all deeply indoctrinated by the Fox News channel that runs 24/7 in their kitchens. Sometimes they'll swap internet insults or send poorly spelled tweets just like Trump's only with shorter words.
But Somerby thinks it is more important to shame the professors because they haven't each adopted an Other to rescue from the obscurity of whatever semi-literate hell he is occupying, to drag the people who think Trump University is a school into polite society. Those Others have no interest in being anything but their ignorant selves. While liberals try to help eager immigrants learn English so they can steal the jobs they have forfeited by disdaining education.
Somerby, you are truly doing God's work.
We Other certainly read. We even read Kristof. The difference between us and you is that we understand why most of his and your ideas should be rejected and you don't.
DeleteMeh. They don't have ideas. They only have talking points.
DeleteWhat would you call it, Bob, when Trump stokes an unreasonable fear of nefarious foreigners bringing their evil to our homelands, particularly when those foreigners are brown skinned residents of a shithole country? What is he appealing to? Fear of "those people", a judgment against "them", the hated alien. What do we normally call this state of mind?
ReplyDeleteI often like Kristof's columns, but I was driven up the wall by his statement, "the Caravan won’t make a bit of difference to America." Well, maybe it won't make any difference to the America where a highly-paid New York Times pundit lives. But, it will hurt poor Americans. See
ReplyDeleteIllegal Immigration Hurts Black Americans Most.
https://amgreatness.com/2018/10/24/illegal-immigration-hurts-black-americans-most/
Explain it to the businesses, who are doing the hiring, David.
DeleteThen let us know how that works out for you.
Why is it that every time you post a link, it is from some shithole right-wing source? Can't you find anything from the legitimate economics literature to support your contention about the effects of immigration? It has been widely studied and yet you link to crappy sources. Is that all you read?
DeleteLets assume that all of the immigrants in that caravan come to Los Angeles. Los Angeles has 3.8 million people roughly. About 10% are African American, so 380,000. Lets assume, according to the right-wing propaganda, 90% of the 8000 immigrants are working age males ready to take jobs. That would be 7200 new workers. How many speak English? How many have the equivalent of a high school education? How many have a trade or skill that is marketable in the LA job market? How many have connections to get work? How many have access to computers to put their resumes on the appropriate websites? How many have resumes? Maybe 1 or 2. Hardly likely they will get good jobs. So where will they work? They will be absorbed into the underground economy that employs undocumented workers. They will work in restaurant kitchens, yards, as domestic workers, sweat shops, in small businesses run by relatives, and so on. Not many African Americans are part of the networks of employment used by Spanish-speaking Central Americans to find work and earn money. These caravan immigrants (many of whom will be placed in detention while seeking asylum) will not be in direct competition with many African Americans at all. But the stereotypes about African Americans are such that this kind of comment seems plausible to people who don't know anything about employment or African Americans or immigrants, other than they don't like them. Is that you, David?
DeleteBut they won't all come to Los Angeles, or San Diego, or to towns in other states either. They will disperse. And they will be offset by the thousands of other immigrants who leave the US each year, since our net immigration has been declining steadily due to economic opportunities elsewhere.
Scalability (in computer lingo) is the big problem. If thousands of people successfully overwhelm American forces and force their way into the United States, this pattern will be repeated. There are literally billions of people on earth whose lives would be better if they lived here. Regardless of our sympathy for these individuals, failing to deal with caravans like this almost amounts to open borders.
Delete"almost" is doing the heavy lifting in your rant, 1:46.
Delete1. Scalability is an act of imagination. How big can hordes be without overwhelming the streets of small towns in Latin America? There are limitations.
Delete2. If all the people in the rest of the world move here, the Earth will be unbalanced and tilt on its axis and people will surely fall off, so this is a self-correcting problem.
3. How would our small number of troops ever be able to cope with literally billions of people all coming at once to our border? We would run out of bullets, even if firing on them were permitted.
4. If they all come here, we can just go there. Problem solved!
Seriously, no one has said the caravans should be or will be let in. No Democrats are suggesting open borders. That is a straw man. On the other hand, we don't have to deal with them the way Trump is doing. Obama deported more people than Trump. It isn't as if previous Democratic administrations were ignoring immigration. It is the Republicans in congress who have failed to move forward on reasonable changes to our immigration policies to deal with refugees fleeing problems in their own countries. Global warming and consequent unrest is going to make this problem worse and we need policies to cope, not chaotic police action and brutality like Trump has implemented.
DinC, I could be wrong but in learning about immigrants to the US I learned about the following nationals, some of who turned to crime:
Delete1) Italians
2) Irish
3) European Jews
4) Israelis
5) Russians
6) Mexicans
7) Africans
8) El Salvadorans
9) Chinese
10) Jamaicans
11) Colombians
12) Dominicans
I likely missed some groups but you get my point.
BTW, the vast majority of these various groups have achieved the American dream and raised their children to strive to do the same.
You however strive to belittle and denigrate black people.
God will get you. For your lies.
@2:15PM - can you explain how being concerned about black crime victims belittles and denigrates black people?
DeleteBTW, Jesus was black.
DeleteYou? Concerned about black people?
DeleteGo back and re-read your bigotry.
The bigger problem is that the bigots have figured out what the Republican Party has known since the 1970s; Republicans can't win elections without the bigot vote.
ReplyDeleteDemocrats can't win elections without the White Glove Nazi babykiller vote, which has killed 11x the number of the powerless than the original Nazis.
DeleteBeing anti-abortion has nothing to do with babies. it's about assuring women are second class citizens.
DeleteI can't believe I still have to explain this in 2018.
Brett Kavanaugh wasting all those "swimmers" beating off to the Starr Report is a sin.
Delete@1:37, are you including the wasted seed during masturbation, the spontaneous miscarriages and children who were never created because priests decided arbitrarily to remain celebate? God probably intended a lot more children than were ever conceived and most of them have been aborted through abstinance, way more than the Nazis killed.
DeleteI can't believe these assholes still cruise the internet hoping to pop into discussions and spew their garbage.
So, killing babies is just the same as masturbation to you, dembot? Nice.
DeleteCarry on, please.
Abortion isn't "killing babies" you asshole. Killing actual babies is murder and is prosecuted with vigor. You are lumping medical procedures in with murder in order to lend a moral validity to your argument, which it does not deserve.
DeleteThe more time you spend masturbating, the less you will annoy people here, so carry on yourself.
So, killing the baby 10 seconds before she's born is a mere medical procedure.
DeleteGot it. Carry on, please. Come clean, dear. It would help to see dembots for what they are...
Democrats don't understand the difference between semen and a living human being. Don't know if this level of ignorance excuses them from their indifference to the mass killing of helpless individuals.
DeleteMeh. They're brainless zombies, that's all. Victims of the cult.
Delete101 - So what are you going to do? You live in a country full of bigots. They control elections. And they hate you because you're an asshole. And you because you have no balls or guts.
DeleteGreat.
We all know it so what are you going to do now?
Keep losing elections to plaid-suited carnys until they all die?
Quit bitchin' like a woman and figure out what to do about you ball-less, cocksucking pussy.
Or shut the fuck up.
Thank you for demonstrating what is meant by "incivility".
Delete(5:15)
DeleteAh, the Howler comment thread is a thing of beauty.
Did you vote yet, Dottie?
DeleteYes - I did! Ya'll faggot pussy crybaby cunts got my vote don't worry.
DeleteStill waiting for an answer: You live in a country oozing and bloated with bigots. It is so infested with bigots that they elected a bigot for president after he pressed all their bigot buttons. They are all fat white bigots and dumb redneck hicks from down in Faulkner country. They are so in number they now control elections and control the government as you have sadly declaimed for 2 years running.
So, what are you going to do about it boys?
Complain about a blogger?
Who wants to tell me first?
What the fuck are you worthless fucks going to do about it besides complain like little bitches?
Of course I know the difference between a living human being and semen.
DeleteThe caravan of refugees from Central America are living human beings. While the result of Kavanaugh working himself over while reading the Starr Report is semen in his hand.
Dottie, they're going to complain like little bitches because they have no ideas except bigoted self hatred for "whiteness" especially white males and killing babies. So yeah, we're going to have to continue kicking your ass until you get some ideas we can talk about.
DeleteConservatives brought diversity to the Supreme Court, by putting two sexual predators on it.
DeleteSteve Benen reports: "At campaign rally last night, Donald Trump told supporters in Wisconsin, "The language of moral condemnation and destructive routine, these are arguments and disagreements that have to stop."
ReplyDeleteToday, Somerby tells us that the language of condemnation needs to stop.
Somerby is once again spouting the Republican talking points. Yes, he has been saying this stuff for a while, but he still sounds like a Republican when he does so. This isn't liberal self-criticism. It is support for right-wing criticism of liberals.
Next he'll be claiming that Hillary shouldn't have called all those sexists, bigots, racists, etc, a basket of "deplorables." Oh, wait, he already did that.
Meanwhile, Gillum is pointing out that DeSantis is the darling of alt-right neo-Nazis. Is that OK to point out or should he too be avoiding identifying bigots when they are clearly bigots? Such as when they talk about monkeying up the state and send out Amos'n'Andy style robocalls full of racist stereotypes.
Somerby says we should turn the other cheek and just avoid labeling that stuff because there might be some Others who could be converted if we just didn't name names. And who would our silence benefit?
Maybe it would change some minds but for the most part it wouldn't matter because the Others think Democrats are an unhinged and ignorant bigoted mob, and they don't care what Democrats think, say, or do.
DeleteBob, the "others" don't listen to a word we say anyway. They certainly don't know who Kristof is or read the New York Times, because they already know everything they need to. Trump and friends will tell them what to believe.

Thank you Thank You Very much Doctor Otonokpo for making my ex boyfriend come back to me. I am Cordelia Sandra from Brazil and i am putting this testimony here too because i want to share my testimony of how i was helped by Doctor Otonokpo within 48 hours of contacting him. Yes, it was last week my ex boyfriend returned to me after i contacted Doctor Otonokpo. My boyfriend was always going back to meet his ex girlfriend because he never really left her. Her name was Sophie. I didn't know how it happened one day after breakfast that i saw him looking at his ex girlfriend's picture on Facebook and I flared at him that he doesn't care about him and he was with me and still thinking about his ex although we have been dating for 6 months. He stormed at me and left the house and never returned. I was heartbroken and wanted him to come back. I was in a nightclub with friend one evening that I saw him with Sophie there, I was humiliated that night and I regretted going there only to see him there. I went online after some days and found Doctor Otonokpo and read about him and I contacted him to help me get him back. I must say that within 48 hours, my boyfriend came back to me and pleaded for leaving me. Is this how spell works so fast? Please, if you want help, contact Doctor Otonokpo too to help you at otonokpotemple@gmail.com
