Drum rejects findings of anthropology!

FRIDAY, JUNE 12, 2020

Can't accept that he lives among humans:
Kevin Drum, our favorite blogger, keeps refusing to come to terms with the future findings of top major key anthropologists.

Out in Orange County, his fellow citizens are refusing to wear masks. They're doing this even as reports of covid-19 cases in the county just keep going up.

"I live among idiots," Drum alleges, closing his mind to science.

According to major anthropologists, the actual state of affairs is substantially different.

According to Future Anthropologists Huddled in Caves, a disconsolate group of future scholars who report to us from the years which lie beyond the global conflagration they refer to only as Mister Trump's War, Drum has misunderstood his surroundings:

They report that Kevin Drum lives among humans. Aristotle's claims notwithstanding, that species was always wired this way, these credentialed top experts have said.

Many humans won't accept masks. Others refuse to accept the basic findings of science.

In our lives, we've loved them all! We believe Abraham Lincoln said that

This isn't what books about the plague years in Europe tell us. People were serious about avoiding that pandemic.

It is easy to oversimplify, ignore history, and make up shit about human nature, if you just drag Aristotle's name into it and pretend that anthropologists agree with you.

  2. Kevin Drum doesn't offer any explanation for why there is a revolt against masks in Orange County. He says the revolt was led by county supervisors. Perhaps they are Trump voting conservatives. If so, that would explain their behavior. Drum calls his neighbors "idiots" but it seems unlikely that everyone in Orange County agrees with this decision.

Somerby's reaction is to say the equivalent of "I told you so" and blame humanity. It is unclear how Drum is rejecting science when it is the county that is rejecting the science that supports mask-wearing. Science is on Drum's side, not against him, and he is not rejecting it.

Somerby is the one not making sense.

Somerby didn’t bother to mention that when he was making his usual point about “human beings”. What compassion!

    6. No, he’s not chiding Drum. But ignoring his “favorite blogger’s” catastrophic illness in favor of making some fatuous point about humanity in the abstract does not show compassion. He says that those who refuse to wear masks are just being...human. Duh. What else can they be? That isn’t compassion; it smacks of turning a blind eye to idiotic behavior that could get his “favorite blogger” (and many others) killed.

    7. We’ve certainly seen a blind eye turned for a lot people actively engaged in displaying the human condition. We’ve certainly made some judgments depending upon how worthy we felt their cause.

It’s interesting to read the post about the St John’s Church email where the congregants ( and by extension the nation) are encouraged to excuse the actions of the arsonists rather than to forgive them. To be grateful that no greater harm was done, rather than to feel the loss and want God’s best for everyone still.

Somerby doesn’t excuse. Neither does he despise. In rare blogs, we get to see that. We see what we had already discerned without seeing thru the years.

  3. Somerby's last line about Abraham Lincoln is another of those irrelevant homages to other people, in this case a line from Bob Dylan, dropped into his essay for no purpose other than stream of consciousness rambling. It has nothing to do with the rest of his essay, certainly.

Here is Trump's daily stream of consciousness rambling:

"Commentators on Friday struggled to understand a comment made by President Donald Trump about Abraham Lincoln.

During a Fox News interview, Trump boasted that he had been better for Black Americans than any president in history. He then suggested that Lincoln’s legacy was “questionable.”

“I think I’ve done more for the black community than any other president, and let’s take a pass on Abraham Lincoln, because he did good — although it’s always questionable. You know, in other words, the end result –” the president said, before host Harris Faulkner cut him off.

“Well, we are free, Mr. President. He did pretty well,” Faulkner said."

    1. Glad to see you’re back to using your nym, professor. Not so glad that you’re back to your old tricks.

Is this blog entry simply “stream of consciousness rambling”? I hope you don’t mind if I don’t take your word for it, particularly since TDH doesn’t reference Dylan. (Why can’t you get the simplest things straight?) He references the Beatles’ song “In My Life”:

      There are places I'll remember
All my life, though some have changed
      Some forever, not for better.
Some have gone and some remain

All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends, I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living.
In my life, I've loved them all.

The world changes, sometimes irrevocably and sometimes for the worse. People we know die. But we should love those we knew, which would require not singling out some portion as the idiots. For better or worse; dead, dying, or living, we’re all human.

Or to rephrase, “With malice toward none, with charity for all.” I believe Paul McCartney and John Lennon said that.

Is that what TDH meant? I don’t know; we all search for meaning and take it as we find it.

But you’re not looking very hard, are you?

      Delete
    2. Yes, there is a Beatles reference, but then Somerby says: "We believe Abraham Lincoln said that"

This is ripped from Dylan's Talking World War III Blues, where Dylan says:

"Half the people can be part right all of the time. Some of the people can be all right part of the time. But all of the people can't be all right all of the time. I think Abraham Lincoln said that. I'll let you be in my dreams if I can be in yours. I said that."

      Look it up.

      Delete
    3. Oh, excellent professor! I stand corrected.

Now, any ideas about what the blogger might have meant?

      Delete
    4. As I said, he throws these references into his essays without worrying about whether they make sense or mean anything. It came into his head because of a fleeting free association and that's pretty much all it means. All of us "of a certain age" and subculture know that Bob Dylan lyric. It seems especially out of place given the Beatles reference that immediately precedes it. You can take it that he is referring to the Beatles lyric when he says that, but it doesn't fit very well, except very generally, along the lines of "someone has to be right, we can't all be wrong" or "life is just a bowl of cherries" or better yet "life is like a box of chocolates". You can force some sort of broad generalization to fit any of those statements. It is why Bob Dylan's remark is clever -- he is satirizing such meanings. The rest of Dylan's song doesn't fit the current times at all, other than being a bad dream, which is too loose to fit.

I said a few months back that this sort of thing represents loose associations, a common symptom of people with frontal lobe deterioration, which happens in old age (and schizophrenia). In Somerby's case, I think it is an indulgence. He isn't bothering to make sense or make his references fit any ongoing theme -- he is just filling up a page with words. It is why he doesn't bother proofreading or correcting errors either. That is part of why I think he is doing this for ulterior reasons, such as to earn rubles or support conservative talking points. It cannot be self-expression when he cares so little about making sense. Silly hippies can smoke a little grass and say "that's deep, man!" as they superimpose whatever rocks their boat onto Somerby's empty essay.

You brag about being willing to admit your mistakes but then you get all sarcastic on me. Bad faith, deadrat.

    5. As I said, he [TDH] throws these references into his essays without worrying about whether they make sense or mean anything.

OK, professor, let’s dig deep here. How do we know what someone’s words really mean? Let’s assume we have a common lexicon and set of shared cultural references so we can skip the semi-idiotics of “whaddya mean by mean?”

Well, ideally we’d like to know the speaker’s reflection on what he meant, his own reaction to his words (including second thoughts), his motivation for speaking — in short some access to his interiority.

But we don’t have that for anyone but ourselves, and a moment’s reflection on our own thought processes will tell us that this isn’t the answer. If we have some self-awareness, we’ll find — and as a professor of psychology, you should be on board here — that repression, denial, projection, wishful thinking, compelled thought, and other processes with roots in our subconscious make us all unreliable narrators of our own mental activity. (Absent any self-awareness, we can usually recognize such processes in others.)

For people we’re speaking with, we can pick up non-verbal cues — tone of voice, word stress, microexpression, and other body language. For a comedic example of the mismatch of text and the spoken word go here for Key and Peele. Or watch the movie The Conversation in which the solution to a murder mystery may hinge on switching the stress in a sentence on a surveillance tape from one word to an adjacent word. (You’ll also get to watch a great performance by my favorite actor. No, not Gene Hackman. Allen Garfield.)

We’re attuned to picking up non-verbal cues, even if their importance is over-estimated. And when we’re unsure, we an ask questions of our interlocutor. Again, professor, you should agree with me here since this is the basis for some psychological therapy.

Alas! none of this is available at TDH. The blogger is famously absent. He doesn’t respond to comments. In fact, he leaves the comment section open to spam from spell casters and Bombay packers and movers. So what can we do? I think the first thing is to decide whether the writer has a consistent and important (or at least interesting) point of view if we take him seriously and at his word (pun intended, I suppose).

Note how hard this can be. You can’t take the blog entries literally word by word because that’s not how we understand English. Or at least not with a writer who uses metaphor, poetry, song lyrics, jokes, irony, sarcasm, hyperbole, etc. So does TDH have such a theme? I think so: journalists and others in the public forum who sit to the left do a terrible job of informing us. Their sins are legion and include among other things, tribal thinking, reporting without learning the topic of the report, mendacity through paraphrase, and an obsession with both scandal and trivia.

It’s pointless to complain that the blogger doesn’t cover right-wing journalists enough or that the blogger doesn’t cover the current events that underly the commentary that he does discuss. You’re an egregious offender in this regard. For an example of an often on-point commenter, read mh who counters TDH’s conclusions on TDH’s own terms, for example by documenting counter-examples that TDH simply ignores.

It’s out of bounds to rely on tools we don’t have to build conclusions which are thereby unreliable. Once again, you’re a standout here because you rely on first order unreliable conclusions to forge a chain of more and more-unreliable conclusions. Are typos an indication of frontotemporal dementia? Doubtful. A loss of empathy is. Do you see that? And aren’t you the one who finds distasteful the art of diagnosis at a distance? And how do you get from dementia to being on the Russian payroll?

      (con't->)

    6. (<-con't)

TDH consistently says that he doesn’t rejoice to see people’s lives ruined by incarceration, he’s reluctant to call people liars when he’s not sure of their knowledge of falsity, he cautions against casting large numbers of people as the other, and in this entry he refuses to categorize as mental deficiency what he sees as a general human propensity.

I can no more live my life by those rules than I can understand Martin Gugino coming out of his coma to declare that he bears no ill feeling toward the police who assaulted him. The closest I can come is to read someone like TDH, who holds attitudes contrary to my own, and evaluate his arguments fairly.

You don’t seem to be able to do that, which is fine. You’re not obligated to adopt my methods, but your arguments are not exempt from criticism.

    7. You brag about being willing to admit your mistakes but then you get all sarcastic on me. Bad faith, deadrat.

I’m sorry, professor, but I can’t follow this logic at all. First, I’m not bragging when I say that I admit my mistakes. I do, but that’s just a given. After all, I don’t expect any praise today because once again I didn’t set my neighbor’s house on fire.

Second, what does sarcasm have to do with admitting mistakes? Do you think that my admission of error is undercut when I treat derisively an argument of yours that deserves such treatment? Of course, the derision is undeserved if it’s based on my error. Perhaps I need to be more explicit about what I’ve withdrawn. Ask and ye shall receive.

    8. Deadrat, reflect for a moment on the fact that you are doing all the work of eliciting meaning from words that TDH just throws out there.

      Delete
    9. All the work? Are you pretending that the blog is written in rongorongo and I’m simply inventing any meaning I ascribe to it.?

      I’ll show my work:

"I live among idiots," Drum alleges

Drum speaks negatively of his fellow O.C. residents, but it turns out that …

Kevin Drum lives among humans. (Emphasis in the original.)

The blogger won’t speak ill of people reacting in a human way, and in fact he says

In our lives, we've loved them all! (Emphasis again in the original.)

All bare text takes some extra work, but do you disagree with this interpretation? If you do, do you find it farfetched? Do you have an interpretation of your own?

The more than 200-year-old church sits at 16th and H Streets NW, near Lafayette Square and the White House, where demonstrators clashed with police throughout the weekend.

The protective glass over a stained-glass window was broken, church leaders said in a statement. The stained glass was not damaged. Graffiti stained the building's yellow and white exterior.

  12. No, wearing a mask is not the single most effective thing. Lancet has stated that the evidence for mask wearing is low. People who wear masks also get infected.

The single most effective thing is to stay home. Many leftists are quite furious at epidemiologists for supporting these protests.

  14. If both the infected person and someone they come into proximity with are wearing masks, it cuts the likelihood of infection by 95%. Of course staying home is the most effective thing, but wearing masks is the most effective thing outside of staying isolated all the time. People who stay home get infected if their family members are going out.

I don't support the protests on the grounds that it is safe, but taking a principled stand that requires sacrifice is a long-standing American tradition. Any of them can be hit on the head by a baton and die of brain injury, or be run over by a car. No one thinks protests are safe.

You want to make sure that your info from Lancet is the most current, since the position on mask effectiveness has changed over time.

    ReplyDelete
  15. That 95% is not backed up by evidence. The Lancet conclusion is recent. One left leaning epidemiologist estimates each day of protest will cause between 100 and 500 deaths per day. These deaths won't be just for the protesters, but others they infect.

The epidemiologists have burned a lot of credibility by supporting the Floyd protest but denouncing the re opening protests. This lack of credibility could have terrible consequences for controlling covid19.

  22. Testimony By Lizzy Desler. How to get your ex back fast! I was hurt and heart broken when a very big problem occurred in my marriage seven months ago, between me and my husband . so terrible that he took the case to court for a divorce. he said that he never wanted to stay with me again, and that he didn't love me anymore. So he packed out of the house and made me and my children passed through severe pain. I tried all my possible means to get him back, after much begging, but all to no avail. and he confirmed it that he has made his decision, and he never wanted to see me again. So on one evening, as i was coming back from work, i met an old friend of mine who asked of my husband .So i explained every thing to him, so he told me that the only way i can get my husband back, is to visit a priest, because it has really worked for him too. So i never believed in spell, but i had no other choice, than to follow his advice. Then he gave me the Email address of the priest whom he visited. Pristbacasim2000@gmail.com. So the next morning, i sent a mail to the address he gave to me, and the priest assured me that i will get my husband back the next day. What an amazing statement!! 23. It's a privilege to share this miraculous testimony to the world. I'm Beth Walters from England. My husband divorced me 4 months back and I have been filled with remorse for I didn't know what to do to amend issues with my husband. I searched for help on the internet on how I could get help in my marriage and I discovered great testifiers about WEALTHY LOVE SPELL who has been progressive with his spells. I got in touch with him and behold, Dr.Wealthy told me that he will prepare a spell for me that will bring back my husband. I was skeptical but I had no other option but to work with him. 2 days later, my husband called me that he's coming back home and from that day till this moment, we have been living peacefully. He is back now with so much love and caring. today i am glad to let you all know that this spell caster has the power to bring lovers back and the most surprising thing is that our love is very strong now, every day is happiness and joy. and There is nothing like being with the man you love. I will highly recommend Dr.Wealthy  to anyone one out there who needs help whatsoever. If you have any problem contact Dr.Wealthy, i give you 100% guarantee that he will help you!!.

  24. 25. My husband and I have been married for over 10 years. We met when I was 18 and he was 21. We’ve been through a lot emotionally together. There were several HUGE fights and painful situations in our marriage, but we always seemed to come out stronger on the other side. Out of the blue my husband just sprung the divorce talk on me, I was totally depressed until I found Dr.Todd website online and I ordered for a Love spell. You won’t believe my husband called me at the exact time this spell caster finished his spell work in 48hrs. I was totally amazed! He is wonderful and his spells work so fast. 26. Yes it is true that DR ISIKOLO is the best spell caster anywhere. My name is Marie Lyons and i was a client for DR ISIKOLO and i must tell you that he is a real spell caster. When i contacted this spell caster my boyfriend had left me for 2 years and i have always wanted him back to me. I met DR ISIKOLO to help me about a month ago and i have reconnected with my boyfriend. When my ex boyfriend left me it was turmoil for me that i slapped my elder sister one certain morning for nothing. This became a disaster for me that i had a physiological trauma and my family were very worried about my health. After 2 years, I met DR ISIKOLO through a testimony also and he told me to calm myself that no matter what the problem is, he is well and ready to help anyone who comes to him. Just in 3 days, my ex called me and wanted to meet. I agreed and made preparations to meet him and he told me how he had felt guilty for what he did and he wanted me back. I praised DR ISIKOLO for his marvelous handiwork and i will recommend him to anyone who needs a spell caster. Contact him to help you and fast at his email Email: isikolosolutionhome@gmail.com You can also WhatsApp him on +2348133261196

  27. My name is Julian Marcus I'm from United Kingdom...I just found out about my husband cheating on me with a co-worker! We’ve been married for two years now with 2kids with lots of amazing moments together, i wanted to leave, but i love him so much. we are both still young and very attractive. but i want my husband, my friend, and the father of my beautiful children. how do i get past the thought of another woman having my husband? Not my fiancé, not my boyfriend, but my husband! i still love him even though he thinks i want to leave i really want him to do better and stop me before i walk out! my husband told me that he doesn’t feel loved anymore, just because of this co-worker he has be cheating on me with, that he wants a divorce, i was devastated, heart broken i begged him to listen to me that we can work it out like we always do, but he didn’t listen, he told me that he met someone that loves and understands him, i begged him to consider our kids but he didn't listen. he left and i was frustrated, i began searching for help and answers, then i heard about a man that can Cast a spell to remind him of all the things we have been through together and bring him back to me, at first I was scared then i decided to give it a try, and like magic my husband came back, apology and begging for forgiveness, thanks to priestbacasim, I’m posting this to help people with similar issues.
