Starting tomorrow: TRUTH AND TOWN!

"You can't handle the truth:" We've been struck by two major thoughts in the past week or two.

Our first thought would be this:

Dr. King is over.

Our second thought would be this:

Across the board, at times like these, our species can't handle the truth.

Starting tomorrow, we'll be focusing on the second of those ideas. For today, as a bit of a preview, let's quickly breeze through both.

Dr. King is over

When we say that Dr. King is over, we're thinking of the viewpoints and values he expressed in his first book, Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story.

The book was published in 1958. It was Dr. King's account of the Montgomery bus boycott—of events which occurred when Dr. King was 26 and 27 years old.

In our view, the book is surprising, sometimes startling, right from its first page on. Consider Dr. King's reaction to the firebombing of his house in January 1956.

Dr. King had just turned 27. The event occurred in the dark of night. Coretta Scott King was inside the house with the couple's infant daughter.

Dr. King was rushed to the scene from a community meeting. By the time he arrived at his home, community members had gathered outside. Some of them were armed.

"By this time the crowd outside was getting out of hand," Dr. King writes in Stride Toward Freedom. As he describes what he did and said, Dr. King gives voice to the values and the beliefs which would disqualify him from serious consideration today:

KING (page 137): In this atmosphere I walked out to the porch and asked the crowd to come to order. In less than a moment there was complete silence. Quietly I told them that I was all right and that my wife and baby were all right. “Now let’s not become panicky,” I continued. “If you have weapons, take them home. We cannot solve this problem through retaliatory violence. Remember the words of Jesus: ‘He who lives by the sword will perish by the sword.’ ” I then urged them to leave peacefully. “We must love our white brothers,” I said, “no matter what they do to us. We must make them know that we love them. Jesus still cries out in words that echo through the centuries: ‘Love your enemies; bless them that curse you; pray for them that despitefully use you.’ This is what we must live by. We must meet hate with love. Remember,” I ended, “if I am stopped, this movement will not stop, because God is with the movement. Go home with this glowing faith and this radiant assurance.”

Embarrassing but true.

Throughout the book, Dr. King describes and affirms an outlook he refers to as "the love ethic of Jesus." As he continues his account of that night, he even expresses something resembling pity for the city officials who, as he directly says, had helped establish the atmosphere which produced that violent act:

KING (page 138): I could not go to sleep. While I lay in that quiet front bedroom, with a distant street lamp throwing a reassuring glow through the curtained window, I began to think of the viciousness of people who would bomb my home. I could feel the anger rising when I realized that my wife and baby could have been killed. I thought about the city commissioners and all the statements that they had made about me and the Negro generally. I was once more on the verge of corroding anger. And once more I caught myself and said: “You must not allow yourself to become bitter.”

I tried to put myself in the place of the police commissioners. I said to myself these are not bad men. They are misguided. They have fine reputations in the community. In their dealings with white people they are respectful and gentlemanly. They probably think they are right in their methods of dealing with Negroes. They say the things they say about us and treat us as they do because they have been taught these things. From the cradle to the grave, it is instilled in them that the Negro is inferior. Their parents probably taught them that; the schools they attended taught them that; the books they read, even their churches and ministers, often taught them that; and above all the very concept of segregation teaches them that. The whole cultural traditional under which they have grown—a tradition blighted with more than 250 years of slavery and more than 90 years of segregation—teaches them that Negroes do not deserve certain things. So these men are merely the children of their culture. When they seek to preserve segregation they are seeking to preserve only what their local folkways have taught them was right.

Dr. King was the son of a minister. Thinking of the city commissioners, he marveled at, in effect, their lack of "good home training."

We're most struck by this observation:

Even their churches and their ministers had taught them to think in the way they did! So said this son of a minster, as he again expressed the need to avoid the feelings he described as "corroding anger."

Dr. King came close to expressing pity for those badly misled people. Today, those values and views are over. You could never get on CNN expressing such values today.

Today, the prevailing values in Our Town are derived from "an eye for an eye," not from Dr. King's preferred "love ethic." That doesn't mean that our values are "wrong." But having said that, consider:

In 2015, some families in Charleston reacted to the massacre there by expressing this "love ethic," Our Town's assistant and associate professors reacted by telling us to pay no attention to these embarrassing  country cousins. of theirs.

In the current climate, Dr. King's preferred love ethic would mainly serve to make him seem like someone's dotty grandfather. Our instincts are different today:

We want to lock up the 19-year veteran police officer—but also the rookie cops who were in their first week on the job.

In the case of the fatal shooting at Wendy's, we want to lock up the police officer who shot and killed the late Rayshard Brooks (as Brooks fired a stolen Taser at him). But we also want to lock up the second officer—the one who got sucker-punched by Brooks and had his Taser stolen, but never fired his gun.

When that second indictment was handed down by an apparently corrupt D.A. who was desperately running for re-election, we couldn't be told about his apparent corruption, or about the possible way it may have affected his charging decision.

(In the end, he was defeated by Fani Willis, the current D.A., in a massive landslide with Willis winning 73% of the vote.)

Manslaughter charges no longer suffice. We seek ways to charge people with murder. Cable stars hold out hope that it can be done.

Examples like these go on and on. They're related to our second recent thought, the one about handling the truth.

"You can't handle the truth"

Full disclosure! We've tried to watch A Few Good Men, but we've never been able to get through it. In large part, we've tried to watch it because we have friends who love the film, but also because it features a widely-quoted line:

"You can't handle the truth."

In 2005, the American Film Institute listed the hundred "Top Quotes" from every American film ever made. In roughly one hundred years of American films, that quotation from A Few Good Men ranked #29.

As best we can tell, A Few Good Men is designed to assure us the people that we can handle the truth. The angry, dissembling Jack Nicholson character is the one who goes down in the end. The characters who stood up for the truth are the ones who prevail.

We actually can handle the truth! In a rational world, that viewpoint about Our Town would also be over. Consider:

In recent years, one extremely surprising fact has become quite clear. First in the conservative world, then within the Trumpist world, many people have been  having a hard time handling the truth.

We'd start with the astonishing number of people who were willing to say that Barack Obama was born outside the U.S. We'd move on to the astonishing number of people who have been convinced that some sort of major scam sent Joe Biden to the White House.

It has become surprisingly clear—in many ways, members of the conservative and Trumpist worlds can't currently handle the truth. In the past few weeks, though, we'd have to say this:

The inability to handle the truth has also come for Our Town. In our view, this fact has been clear for years.

Is Our Town able to handle the truth? We'll be asking that question all week.

It will be extremely hard to find time to discuss all the relevant failures. In our view, that's how clear it has become that Our Town, at the present time, also can't handle the truth.

Once again, we'll be honest enough to state a key disclaimer:

These analyses are coming to us from major anthropologists. These scholars say that, at times of tribal division and stress, our highly fallible human brains aren't wired to handle the truth.

It's tribal Storyline all the way down! Or so these top scholars insist.

It isn't just the Trumpists, these despondent experts now say. According to these leading savants, the inability to handle the truth now rules the streets of Our Town!

We'll admit that this claim seems absurd on its face. But could this claim really be true?

Tomorrow: Two trips to the New York Times

Why, yes: over 50% of the population, we hear. And that's because it appears highly likely, dear Bob. To anyone who's not a brain-dead liberal.

  3. MLK never advocated abandoning the civil rights movement in the face of the bombing of his home. He only warned against feeling anger and bitterness toward white people. Today's "professors" and other civil rights leaders are not advocating anger or bitterness either, yet Somerby seems to think they should cool it, because MLK spoke like a minister against hate. MLK didn't speak in order to have his own words used against those who are extending his legacy of change.

    1. They're NOT extending his legacy. It's all hate and outrage and punishment.

  4. Why couldn't Somerby finish watching A Few Good Men?

It involves the hazing and inadvertent death of a marine who is a member of a minority group (William Santiago) using a forbidden discipline measure, a "code red" ordered by the commanding officer. It is ultimately about honor, not truth. When Nicholson says "you can't handle the truth" it is because he has been baited into expressing his bias against Santiago, and it results in a dramatic courtroom confession. The plot hinges around the perceived unfitness of Santiago to be a marine and extrajudicial hazing (punishment).

Somerby should be watching movies like this. If he had watched it, he might better understand why Chauvin's actions were so wrong (aside from resulting in Floyd's death).

But more than that, why does Somerby think it is OK to grab a line out of context from a movie he says he hasn't watched, just because it has the word "truth" in it? The line has nothing to do with truth in the film. It has to do with honor and abuse of authority. Nicholson, as he speaks that line, is expressing contempt for the court and the attorney questioning him (played by Tom Cruise).

More and more, Somerby appears to be someone walking through this world with very little understanding of what things mean. He doesn't understand that MLK was speaking to that crowd in order to protect them from their own anger, knowing that if they sought retribution they would be dealt with harshly. He was not arguing pacifism in the struggle for social justice. And when MLK points out that respected white men can still be bigots, he is not condoning that, only pointing out that a cloak of respectability can hide bigotry. Somerby seems to have missed that message too, as he interprets MLK's words to mean that it is OK that white people hold the views they do, since they learned them in the cradle. No matter how someone becomes a bigot, there is no excuse for remaining one. Most people learn to shed their ignorance when they go to college, join the military, work on the job side-by-side with others who are different, watch films that show them a different world, and learn to think for themselves. Somerby had that opportunity -- what happened to him and why does he now portray MLK as the patron saint of bigotry?

That's why he stopped hazing Somerby's detractors, fun as that must have been for him.

I entirely agree that deadrat left because Somerby is not pessimistic about average people and does not think the country is inveterately racist. However, as driven as deadrat was to stomp someone, he was not so childish and idiotic to equate Somerby’s view with a denial that racism exists or that it should not be vigilantly opposed, And that when it comes out your saintly side.

I miss deadrat because he recognized Somerby as being the brilliant and unique voice that he is.

  5. From Wikipedia:

"Brooks stood up and punched Rolfe, who drew his own taser and fired both cartridges at Brooks with no effect.[18] Brooks fled through the parking lot with Brosnan's taser still in hand. While still running, Brooks glanced back, half-turned, and fired the second shot of Brosnan's taser – capable of two shots before being reloaded[19] – at Rolfe's head.[12][20]

According to prosecutors, Brooks and Rolfe were 18 feet (5.5 m) apart[22][a] when Rolfe dropped his taser, drew his handgun[12] and shot Brooks once in the midback and once in the buttocks;[24] prosecutors allege the third shot struck a nearby vehicle, narrowly missing its three occupants.[18][21] According to prosecutors, disputed by Rolfe's attorneys,[25] Rolfe then said "I got him".[17][23]"

Here is part of the problem, and why Rolfe and Brosnan were charged. First Brosnan should not have permitted himself to be "sucker punched" and he should not have let Brooks take his taser. Second, the taser has two shots before it must be reloaded. At the point that Brooks was shot by Rolfe, his taser no longer worked. Third, Rolfe fired in such a manner as to endanger innocent bystanders in a nearby car, at a point where there was no need to shoot since Brooks was essentially unarmed.

Somerby of course omits the facts and presents this case in a manner to prejudice impressions of those reading his version. You also have to wonder why Brooks wasn't allowed to walk to his sister's house and why they attempted to arrest him at all. This case, like many others, shows an escalation of violence resulting from police actions, beginning with a situation in which the victim (Brooks) was pleasant and cooperative, albeit a bit drunk (.10 alcohol level).

Brosnan is being charged because he exercised poor judgment that resulted in a man's death. Somerby seems to think that Brosnan is only responsible for his own specific actions, and not the outcome of the situation, which worsened considerably due to his actions.

What does Somerby see when he reads about these situation? He seems to look for reasons to blame the victim and excuse the cops. The concept that even criminals have rights seems to elude Somerby. The concept that with authority and deadly force goes responsibility never seems to enter his mind.

  6. Dr King’s “love ethic” was a choice. It was how he chose to respond to hatred and bigotry. It isn’t “the truth” however. It is one response out of a number of possible responses, whatever one chooses to believe about racists.

Whatever the “truth” is in these police incidents is unrelated to King’s love ethic. If police misconduct occurs, why should it not be punished? You can’t use MLK’s love ethic as a reason to refrain from punishing police officers. Did those cops exercise the “love ethic” when dealing with victims like Brooks or Floyd?

Why prosecute anyone at all if you want to follow Jesus’ teachings? Or should we only follow them for police officers and conservatives?

How is holding someone accountable for their actions in a court of law a violation of the “love ethic?” It isn’t as if these cops are being lynched without trial, or killed before obtaining a trial as Brooks and Floyd were.

    2. Some of it may depend on if you are seeking "justice" or "vengeance" or if you define the two as meaning the same thing.

Love and the truth are two different issues, although it seems many on the left do not care for either.

While the Rightwing believes in foma like "Obama was not born in the US" and "Trump got robbed." The left believes in things like
      1. Zimmerman got out of the car even after he was told not to
      2. Michael Brown had his hands up.
      3. Duante was pulled over for air fresheners.
      4. riots are the same thing as peaceful protests, and should be encouraged and excused (except when the other side does it, then it's a coup)
      5. Nothing in America has improved since 1960, or 1860 or 1760 vis a vis race relations

Put the lies together with a violence-hate-revenge ethic and you get race war or civil war.

    5. Dr T, this is a caricature of what the left believes, heavily influenced by Somerby's misrepresentations. Someone somewhere has said this stuff, but that doesn't mean everyone on the left believes it, or even that most on the left do.

I would rephrase these are follows:
      1. Zimmerman shouldn't have shot Martin.
      2. Brown shouldn't have been killed because a cop was frightened.
      3. Daunte was pulled over for minor infractions that tend to be ignored for white drivers.
      4. During peaceful protests, right-wing instigators and economic opportunists commit violence that is then blamed on the left (antifa). The 1/6 insurrection was an attempted coup.
      5. Not enough has improved vis a vis race relations and it is time for more change.

Representing opposing views in an extreme manner is a propaganda tactic.

Do you remember what his enemies did to Jesus?

They were both killed by their enemies.

Should Jews and their allies "love their enemies" or hunt them down?

  10. It would be logically defensible as a “progressive” viewpoint if Somerby’s complaint, that charges against cops are a pretextual way of holding “working class” cops accountable for what are actually society’s ills, were balanced out by a call to throw the book at law-breaking plutocrats like Trump, Manafort, and Stone.

Instead, he attacks liberals for wanting to go after the bigwigs because they’re in the other party.

Police force is most often directed at low-level schlubs like George Floyd, or the little guy with a little bit of cocaine under his car seat, while the rivers of cocaine flowing on Wall Street remain unmolested.

"If you have weapons, take them home; IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THEM,PLEASE DO NOT SEEK TO GET THEM. We cannot solve this problem through retaliatory violence. WE MUST MEET VIOLENCE WITH NONVIOLENCE." My copy was published after 1986, perhaps in 1996, although it is hard for me to tell.

Was the speech modified or did Somerby make an error in transcription?

I would not say the Few Good Men says we can handle the truth. When Nicholson makes his famous speech, the court, the society at large rejects his definition of "the truth". Nicholson's "truth" was that our nice polite society needs to be defended by psychos like him, that he is defending our comfort from the barbarians at the gate and that he cannot defeat them with Marquis of Queensbury rules. The court does not agree.

If there were any savant who agreed with his views, he would have dropped that name long ago. Somerby is out on his own limb, along with Matt Gaetz, Donald Trump, and the rest of the right-wing crime syndicate.

My ex-boyfriend dumped me one week ago after I accused him of seeing someone else and insulting him. I want him back in my life but he refuse to have any contact with me. I was so confuse and don’t know what to do, so I reach to the Internet for help and I saw a testimony of how a spell caster help them to get their ex back so I contact the spell caster and explain my problem to him and he cast a spell for me and assure me of 2 days that my ex will return to me and to my greatest surprise the third day my ex came knocking on my door and beg for forgiveness. I am so happy that my love is back again and not only that, we are about to get married. Once again thank you Dr Believe. You are truly talented and gifted. He is the only answer.
