BREAKING: Posting delayed till this afternoon!

TUESDAY, JULY 8, 2025

Medicaid meets The Five: Every fourth Tuesday, we lose the bulk of the day to our ongoing medical mission.

This is that fourth Tuesday! For that reason, we won't be posting until late this afternoon. Meanwhile, our question is this:

Now that the GOP megabill has passed into law, what's going to happen with respect to Medicaid coverage?

In yesterday's report, we showed you some—though not yet all—of what was said last Wednesday on The Five. What else was said on that high profile show? And how can anyone actually know what the actual truth might be?

Our American discourse is a shambles, a Babel—a mess. We'll profile that problem all this week. In our view, this endemic, existential problem is vastly underreported, vastly underdiscussed.

  1. It will be more difficult for the illegals to get enrolled in Medicaid, what else? And that's, of course, the end of the world.

    1. Are people using the term "illegals" to designate any immigrant? To my knowledge, no one is checking immigration status in hospitals. Just ability to pay for treatment.

What happens when a person goes to an ER and can't pay for treatment? The hospital eats the cost. They are required by law to treat whoever needs it, regardless of ability to pay. What happens when Medicaid absorbs part of the costs? Hospital gets reimbursed for the treatment costs and that enables them to stay in business and serve the rest of the community, so each of us can count on having a hospital within a reasonable distance to go to.

That is why it is better to cover people using a mechanism such as Medicaid than to let chronically ill homeless, drug users, poor and unemployed and transient people bankrupt clinics and hospitals.

Trump and the Republicans are fucking around with our economic systems for coping with various situations. Such as what happens when there are two planes attempting to land at the same airport, and what happens when it is hurricane season in Florida, and what happens when young children are not vaccinated for routine childhood diseases such as measles. They are going to have to learn the hard way why such systems were developed in the first place. They have apparently forgotten what it was like when banks failed and there was cholera in the wells. They could have learning by reading about the past, but stupid people have to do stupid things to learn, apparently. Soon enough they will find out that robber barons don't make good presidents, but it may be too late for the unlucky by then.

    13. Undocumented immigrants already could not receive Medicaid benefits, nor most benefits offered by the US government.

This is despite the fact that immigrants contribute over a hundred billion dollars towards government revenue every year, immigrants being the backbone and lifeblood of our economy (and having much lower crime rates than native born citizens).

The ignorance on display from Republicans is breathtaking.

In reality, there is very little waste, fraud, or abuse in Medicaid (or Medicare or Social Security), and what little there is, is perpetrated by PROVIDERS, not beneficiaries.

You know, providers like Rick Scott, the Senator from Florida who was responsible for the largest Medicare fraud in history.

In reality, about 30% of all healthcare costs in the US go to the mere administration of private health insurance, whereas public healthcare provided by the government has an operating cost of 2% - far more efficient.

    14. There's no such thing as "undocumented immigrant", idiot-Democrat. Because immigrant is someone with an immigrant visa.

  8. On Monday, Somerby said:

    "Tomorrow: What Compagno said"

    Today (Tuesday), Somerby says:

"This is that fourth Tuesday! For that reason, we won't be posting until late this afternoon. Meanwhile, our question is this:

Now that the GOP megabill has passed into law, what's going to happen with respect to Medicaid coverage?"

I assume that Somerby knew on Monday that he would have a medical appointment today, so why make a promise he probably won't keep?

And probably we won't hear anything from Somerby about those cuts to the weather service and their connection to the inadequate warnings ahead of the flooding in TX which resulted in over 100 deaths.

Is Somerby on Medicaid? Maybe he would like to tell us about his own healthcare situation? He most likely has health care connected to his teacher pension, or perhaps his inheritance was large enough to let him buy whatever plan he wants. I doubt he will be examining Medicaid and the bill from the perspective of someone who truly cannot afford health care. So what can he say that is important today? Maybe he will muse about whether self-cannibals should get treatment for self-inflicted wounds, although people who attempt suicide or those who have drug overdoses are treated in ERs.

Those who think immigrants shouldn't receive treatment in hospitals are perhaps not aware that you can break a leg while visiting London, have it treated in hospital there and go home without a bill, not paying a single cent.

Somerby didn't establish any coherent point yesterday so why expect one today?

Somerby keeps hinting that he has some chronic condition that is being treated on a regular basis. So far, I haven't heard him express any gratitude that he has such health care, nor any expression of thanks to his doctors and nurses. Maybe he is planning to thank those in Congress for cutting the ability of others to access health care when they need it? Anything is possible.

  9. As it stands, can illegals get Medicaid? No, except for sick children and pregnant women:

"Generally, undocumented immigrants are not eligible for traditional Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
However, there are exceptions and state-specific programs.
Emergency Medicaid: Undocumented immigrants may receive coverage for emergency medical services if they meet other eligibility requirements.
State-funded programs: Some states provide health coverage to certain immigrant groups, including some undocumented individuals, particularly children and pregnant people. These programs are not Medicaid. Specific states offering coverage to children, adults, or pregnant people regardless of immigration status are listed in the provided documents.
Prenatal care: Some states use a CHIP option to provide prenatal care and pregnancy-related benefits to low-income children from conception, regardless of the parent's immigration status. "

    2. Why is is a big deal to exclude Migrants from Medicaid when they're already excluded? One reason is political: criticize everything Trump does. Also, IIRC I read that the current law isn't being followed. Migrants are being given health care because there's no enforcement. It's safer for an administrator to provide the health care to all needy people without checking.

Now that it's doubly illegal to give free health care to migrants, will migrants really be excluded from Medicaid? IMO that's difficult, because the states administer Medicaid, not the Feds.

DiC: "Why is is a big deal to exclude Migrants from Medicaid when they're already excluded?"

I'll tell you why it's a big deal, David. There are many voices on the right--including the CSPAN caller Our Host has quoted a couple of times--who assure us that the $800B in planned "savings" from "reforming and protecting" Medicaid will be achieved by prohibiting something that is already prohibited. That's just not going to happen.

So that leaves two other possibilities: 1) the proposed savings will never materialize and the budget deficit will be even worse than expected, or 2) Medicaid cuts will affect American citizens including people who already work or those whose medical conditions prevent them from working.

Speaker Johnson, among others, has touted the bill as a way to "protect Medicare for those who really need it." But if we can't achieve their projected savings by denying benefits to people who don't actually get them, Johnson and House Republicans are lying right in our faces.

      Delete
    25. Don't forget all the savings they are counting on getting from kicking all those millions of 25-30 yr old dude bros hanging out in their mother's basement playing video games off of Medicaid and out into the real world and learn how to steal from the public like hard working republicans.

      Delete

    26. What a stupid comment, 3:41. What's in the law is written in the law; either your imaginary your horror scenarios are there or they aren't. And if the savings is a fake number, then every other number is a fake number. Either you accept the estimates or you don't.

Also, the fact that illegals were typically ineligible to enroll doesn't mean that there wasn't (before this bill) a bunch of loopholes allowing them to enroll.

      Delete
    27. "Don't forget all the savings they are counting on getting from kicking all those millions of 25-30 yr old dude bros" are young and healthy, likely not on Medicaide unless in real bad shape - i.e. permanent disability. That age group is not much of an expense to taxpayers.

      Delete
    28. Health care providers are required to treat everyone who needs it, regardless of immigration status or ability to pay. The question is not whether such people will be treated but who will pay for it. With Medicaid, the govt reimburses the health care provider. Without it, the hospital must absorb the costs itself. This can bankrupt hospitals and then there will be no services for anyone.

People who are illegal will stay away from hospitals if they think they are checking immigration status and coordinating with ICE. That is why hospitals do not check immigration status before providing care. They do not want people who need treatment to avoid it, get sicker (and require a great deal more expensive treatment later) or die. People who go into medicine as a career do not want to see people die when they can help it.

If you are on vacay and get into a car accident in Mexico, don't you want the hospital to patch you up? Why would they do that if everyone everywhere takes the attitude that only citizens matter and if you can't write them a check, fuck you.

@3:58 The new "Beautiful Bill" doesn't just affect so-called "illegals." It also denies green card holders from buying subsidized insurance on ACA marketplaces.

But you go ahead and tell yourself that the cuts will only affect people you don't like and that it will add up the way Miraculous Johnson says it will.
