The Five pretend to speak: Pumpkin-fueled squirrels were stuffing their faces in these environs this morning.
You can't exactly blame the squirrels. On the other hand, this:
As we noted at the start of the week, Shane Gillis said there wasn't another way he could say it! In his monologue for Saturday Night Live, the hilarity had proceeded as shown:
Saturday Night Live: October 10, 2026
“I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women just dress like whores now. Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe— Have you seen it? I’ve seen it. The shorts? Have you seen the shorts? Those neon—they're like artificial bait-colored, and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole.
“And don’t look! You’re not allowed to look...”
The whores are now displaying their buttholes and cheeks! To watch the entire monologue, you can just click this.
Concerning Gillis' use of that word, was there no other way to describe it? In fact, there are a million other ways to describe it, assuming it even exists. But possibly without quite thinking about it, some of These Hard-Charging Bros Today may be inclined to prefer to take the misogynist insult route.
We'll also note that the conceptual range among these gents may not be especially vast. Consider:
In the course of less than seven minutes, Gillis discussed the "two big fat bitch sisters" with whom he'd grown up. (There was no other way to say it.) One of them, displaying "her trucker forearms," used to accuse him of "masturbating in the shower" but also of having "bitch hips."
Don't miss the slightly discomfiting story Gillis told about what went through his mind when, perhaps inevitably, he ran into "a beautiful woman, walking towards me, also by herself," when he went out to enjoy a hike in the woods. Also, time was devoted to name-dropping a pair of friends, Joe Rogan and Theo Von.
He was concerned that his excessive weight made him "look like a lesbian." Also, a guy is "either gay or Hitler," given These Haircuts Today.
What a pile of crap! And as we noted on Monday, a dispute broke out after Gillis' appearance on SNL. The question was this:
Should he have said that These Women Today are just dressing like whores?
To us, the answer is fairly obvious. But then, we never would have approved a morally vacuous set like that for inclusion on a major American TV show. We'd more likely tell the performer to come back when he had something of value to offer.
(Also, when he had something which wouldn't force us to expend a whole month's worth of laugh track.)
We feel sure that Brother Gillis is a perfectly good, decent person. But he did decide to go with the W-bomb, and several people out in the world said that he shouldn't have done that.
On October 14, five Fox employees pretended to discuss what had happened. On this particular afternoon, it was the standard four reliables, plus the punching bag:
The Five: Wednesday, October 14, 2026
Emily Compagno: regular panelist
Jessica Tarlov: liberal punching bag
Jesse Watters: regular panelist
Dana Perino: regular panelist
Greg Gutfeld: regular panelist
To watch the pseudo-discussion, click here. The flimflam went like this:
For the MAGA stalwarts, the segment took a typical turn. Instead of evaluating Gillis' use of that word—the word was BLEEPed by Fox producers when tape of his performance was shown—the reliables spent their time critiquing what they described as over-reactions by a handful of lefty lunatics.
Eventually, it fell to Tarlov to state her view. Correctly or otherwise, we find it hard to believe that she said what she actually thinks.
In our view, it's time for Tarlov to leave this show. If we want our flailing nation to survive, it's also time for this braindead imitation of life to be yanked from the air.
There are certain sports in which women have a natural advantage. There should be separate competitions for men, with women carefully excluded. Men who win these competitions should receive gold medals and be accepted as champions.
ReplyDeleteThat is already happening.
DeleteThat is good.
DeleteIt isn't women who want separate competitions. My daughter tried to organize a co-ed water polo team in high school but the school administration wouldn't allow it. Girls were already practicing with the boys team and not getting hurt or having any problems. This isn't the "highest level" of competition but most sports is a matter of the participants enjoying themselves, not anyone setting records or winning trophies. Men and women played mixed doubles in country clubs all over the nation. This is a stupid non-argument.
DeleteThere should be no separate competitions. Only mixed competitions.
DeleteNot mixed competitions. Mixed sports. Everyone can play. Everyone wins.
DeleteWhen a girl wins a ribbon in a separate competition, she is being told that she was the best among her competitors but can never be the best overall, because she wasn't permitted to compete with all competitors. It is a formalized way of telling girls that however good they get, they can never be the best, because that spot is reserved for men. We don't need that "protection."
DeleteIf some people want to compete in separate events, fine, but there should also be open events where anyone can compete regardless of sex or gender.
In many sports, competitors get better as a result of playing against better opponents. Women don't have that opportunity when their field is limited. In some high schools and situations, girls are allowed to practice with and against boys who are better than they are, and they benefit. I suppose that the limits on boys and men's sports and the creation of separate events is because men are protective of the egos of boys who might be defeated by skilled girls. No one cares about the girls' egos because girls are supposed to lose. Girls are given that message early in life. Rigging games so that boys do not have to face girls in their sport gives boys the idea that girls cannot do well too, which is why the right is so busily trying to "protect" girls from being beaten by transwomen, as if girls cannot handle defeat by a better competitor. I find myself wondering if it is the boys who cannot accept the truth about their own skills.
And sports tends to be a metaphor for all areas of competition in life. Girls aren't supposed to compete in the workplace and they definitely aren't supposed to win.
DeleteOpen events in all sports. Yes!
DeleteAnd life!
DeleteIt could be that there would be no separate men's and women's sports - just like there are no separate men's and women's students in a coed classroom. But if for women to compete with men in sports like hockey, basketball, baseball, football, golf, tennis, track and field, boxing, etc they'd never make the team. Or very few. The best men at almost any physical sport are better than the best women. I rooted for Billie Jean King to beat Bobby Riggs, and was glad she won - but Riggs was not a top male tennis pro.
DeleteIt started hailing so we ran into the stadium to practice soccer inside. Five women walk up and want to play basketball. I said you want me and the big guy with three of you, and have three guys and two girls on the other? Nope, us five girls against you five, including the 6'5" dude. We were getting clobbered like 13-3 when one of our guys calls time. He says it's the University Women's team and we need to start hitting back. Didn't help much. But we woulda whipped them in soccer! (Maybe.)
DeleteCaitlin Clark would dominate the NBA.
DeleteSchools should have three teams for each sport: male, female, mixed. Athletes could try out for the mixed team or for whichever single-sex team wants them.
DeleteWomen would excel in mixed boxing.
DeleteMen develop their strength, weight and full height later, not when kids are in middle and high school.
DeleteNo one is saying that women must always win against men, in order for it to be a good idea for them to play together. In every game there are winners and losers. If boys are playing boys then the other boys lose. Does that mean they should never play the game? This is a ridiculous argument given that boys are not competitive against the best boys or men either.
DeleteThere shouldn’t be all-male teams. But there should be all-female teams for girls and women who aren’t ready to play with males. The best athletes will excel on the mixed teams.
DeleteI would pay to view mixed mixed martial arts.
DeleteAs noted above, there are men who aren't ready to play with girls too. The assumption that men are always better than women is incorrect.
DeleteSubvarsity teams exist for boys who are not as skilled as the varsity boys team. It provides a way for them to play while acquiring more skill. Why shouldn't women do that too. This idea that size and strength is all that matters, not skill, is wrong in practice.
DeleteThe varsity team should be mixed.
DeleteIt’s wrong to use “whore” as an insult. Sex workers provide a valuable service. They deserve our respect.
ReplyDeleteThe word whore is used ironically by younger women. If used seriously, it is part of slut-shaming, a derogatory word used to shame women who are "sex positive" and open about their sexuality, instead of pretending they are demure virgins (as men would prefer them to be). Women have the right to control their own bodies and have sex lives without men dictating how that should occur.
DeleteMy body, my choice also refers to such things as getting tattoos, deciding what weight to be, coloring and cutting one's hair, amount of hair to allow on one's body, what clothes to wear and how many clothes to own, and all other aspects of appearance and health, as a matter of personal choice and control. A woman should not have to ask her husband or boyfriend before getting a haircut. Wearing makeup or blue hair or no makeup doesn't make someone a lesbian or a whore or anything else men choose to call women, in retaliation for exercising free will over their own bodies. This is where Gillis goes wrong. He has no right to any say in whether women exercise and what they wear while doing it, much less calling names that imply sexual promiscuity.
I wish Somerby were more explicit than simply to say everyone knows what the response to Gillis should be. Why can't Somerby say it himself?
Misogynist jerks get away with saying hateful things because OTHER MEN let them do it, laughing at non-jokes that are actually hate speech. Somerby refuses to be clear about his own reaction while blaming Tarlov for being unable to stand up to Gutfeld (outnumbered 4 to 1) and claiming SNL should have censored their guest host's routine ahead of time. (Do they do that?) Why should any other man do what Somerby demands when Somerby himself won't clearly state that women have the right to wear what they want at the gym, just as men do.
This is why Somerby is an asshole.
As long as Tarlov stays on that show, she helps the enemy.
DeleteAdding another conservative in her place wouldn't help the enemy? I think the show itself helps the enemy, which is its purpose.
DeleteIf Tarlov wants to earn money appearing and trying to balance the extreme right wing positions on Gutfeld's show, how is that any different than the liberals who appear on Bill Maher's show or Joe Rogan? The expectation that any conservative will ever change their mind about anything because some random liberal makes a good point, is extremely naive. It is unfair for Somerby to impose that on Tarlov.
What person in their right mind, in any job they want to hold onto, would tell their boss their true opinions on any subject? Tarlov is performing a role, as she is hired to do. Does Somerby have the right to tell her she shouldn't earn a living, as men do all the time?
Somerby claims to have great admiration for Bill Maher. Maher has gone whole hog for Trump, saying nice things about him after his second dinner at Mar a Lago, along with Kid Rock. If Maher were telling the truth he would mention the health concerns he no doubt witnessed first hand. Instead, Maher is busily fluffing Trump in despicable ways. But Tarlov is Somerby's target? That is sexism in action -- a different standard for Tarlov than for Maher who couldn't have sold out more completely than he obviously has this past week. Crickets from Somerby about that. Maher is his idol, because look what a big famous guy he is, at the expense of his integrity!
Anon 12:44, you calling TDH an "a**hole" because wasn't explicit enough for you in his (rather harsh) criticism of Gillis is as offensive (and brainless) as anything that Gillis said.
DeleteThe reason Somerby is an asshole is he keeps bringing up a gross comic who was on SNL (a show now watched by only a few Seniors) only days before we learn if we have a chance of pushing back against this God awful fascist movement. It should be all blue hands on deck, and vote today you assholes that haven't. Seriously, make sure your registered and vote. And if at all possible, don't vote by mail. (If Republican stay home to protest Trump proclaiming he is the true Assman.) Sometimes I think maybe 'ol Bob ain't too blue.
DeleteI don’t speak for other men, but I do not like demure virgins.
DeleteDonated today to Sherrod Brown and Amy Acton and Mary Peltola, and then I went to vote to push back on the fascist regime
DeleteYou are an excellent person 3:03, now get all your friends and family to do the same.
DeleteI have voted and also donated money to Peltola, Ossoff and El Sayed. My husband voted too but donated to Peltola and Acton, largely because of the ugly ad being run by the Republicans. We can protest with our wallets and our votes.
DeleteI am not so excellent and I’m getting old but I’ll do what I can
Delete
ReplyDelete"But then, we never would have approved a morally vacuous set like that for inclusion on a major American TV show."
Ha-ha. Thanks for laughs, the Church Lady.
SNL is a minor show.
DeleteA minor show 50 years running.
DeleteFifty years of decline.
DeletePlenty of people would argue that SNL has ups and downs, not decline. I like the originals, yes, but I also liked Eddie Murphy and Martin Short's characters and Tiny Fey, Amy Pohler are wonderful, as they have continued on to their own shows after their stints on SNL.
DeleteGillis' appearance may have been a misguided attempt to introduce balance onto the show, but maybe there just aren't comparable conservative comics.
If too many conservatives are following in the footsteps of Joe Rogan and the podcast model of fame, maybe there just isn't any talent to draw upon for shows like SNL.
ReplyDeleteYou know, Bob, we'll soon have the tenth anniversary of the first Dumbocrat mass head-explosion, in November 2016.
10 years, Bob. 10 years, since you and your comrades turned, literally overnight, into retarded Dumbocrats. Can you imagine?
Maybe you weren't here but Somerby helped elect Trump.
DeleteRepublican heads all exploded on May 17, 1954, for some reason the corporate-owned media won't cop to.
DeleteAnd they only keep fucking everything up worse and worse every single fucking time. Just a pack of drooling idjits. Please make it stop.
DeleteSomerby didn't help Trump get elected. That's a weird theory held by weird thinkers.
DeleteIn 2016, if you didn't vote for Hillary, you helped elect Trump. Somerby spent a lot of time dissing Hillary and no time pointing out the farce over her emails and Benghazi, no complaints about Comey's letter about Abedin's husband's laptop. Somerby defended Trump over the pussy tape and the other reports of sexual assault (lots of women came forward).
DeleteSomerby's abrupt right turn was so noticeable that other bloggers were discussing it, not just commenters here.
Maybe Somerby became one of those Elephant Graveyard New Guys, with a dark hole filled by Trump's cult (because his father died when he was 8 yo and he hated his mom), or maybe he got paid by Russia like other standups, or maybe he is just a stupid, empty guy. Who knows? But it is clear he helped Trump and hindered Hillary (which is the same as helping Trump).
Why are you so stupid?
DeleteNo one who knows me has ever called me stupid, even when they may disagree with my opinions. I'll bet you cannot say the same.
DeleteI’ve been called stupid many times. My friends speak candidly. Too bad you don’t have candid friends:
Delete4:09 -- "Somerby defended Trump over the pussy tape"
DeleteIs that something you just made up?
No. The tape was dismissed as "locker room talk" and Somerby went along with that explanation of it. It was pointed out that there were other women substantiating the tape with complaints (I said it myself in Somerby's comments) but the press and Somerby ignored that evidence of the truth of Trump's own self-confession. Trump himself later back it up with his remark in deposition that when you are famous, they let you do it.
Delete“The tape was dismissed as ‘locker room talk’ and Somerby went along with that explanation of it.”
DeleteHe “went along”? What does that mean, exactly? I seriously doubt your assertion that Somerby “defended” Trump for what he said. Can you quote him, or shall we just trust your memory?
What Somerby actually said was that Trump’s “pussy” tape was “an assault on the dignity of half the nation’s people.” 10/8/16.
DeletePerhaps you should be a mensch and retract.
I’m not a mensh. I’m a bot.
DeleteSomerby can’t even refer to women directly. Half the population could also refer to children vs adults. Hardly a strong statement. Isn’t Trump’s behavior also an assault on the dignity of men? You are such an asshole.
DeletePerhaps, but you falsely accused Somerby
DeleteThat was me.
DeleteNo, I didn’t but you’ll never admit it.
DeleteWell, you’re right: I find it very hard to admit that your accusation that Somerby defended Trump over the pussy tape is true.
Delete
DeleteWhat's to defend? Most women love to suck rich & famous dick. That's what he said, and that's true. And it's trivial; everyone knows it.
Damn woke libtards think Trump shouldn’t be allowed to sexually assault whoever he wants. Come to think of it even the orange felon denied it too. I guess he is also woke
DeleteDG, I have posted links like this since 2016:
Deletehttps://www.npr.org/2016/10/13/497799354/a-list-of-donald-trumps-accusers-of-inappropriate-sexual-conduct
Somerby has accepted Trump’s denial and never acknowledged these accusations. Then he called Stormy a con artist and extortionist while deriding the “feminist heroes” accusing Trump, such as E. Jean Carroll, who won her defamation case when Trump called her a liar about his assault on her. And Somerby has ignored the Epstein trafficking rapes that Trump was part of.
Here is what AI says:
Delete“On his media criticism blog, The Daily Howler, Bob Somerby has frequently analyzed the coverage of Donald Trump's 2005 Access Hollywood tape. Rather than focusing on defending Trump's actual comments, Somerby's primary argument focuses on criticizing mainstream media outlets (like CNN and MSNBC) for mischaracterizing or exaggerating Trump's subsequent statements about the tape.
Somerby's commentary centers on two specific arguments:
• Critiquing Claims that Trump "Doubled Down": Somerby heavily criticized journalists and networks for claiming that Trump "doubled down" on his Access Hollywood statements during later legal depositions (such as in the E. Jean Carroll case). Somerby analyzed the transcripts to argue that Trump did not claim he had a "right" to assault women, but rather that he was answering a hypothetical question about historical, star-driven behavior—arguing that the media distorted the context to create a more sensational narrative.
• Correcting the Narrative on Trump's Apology: Somerby has pointed out inaccuracies in media framing regarding how the Trump campaign handled the initial fallout in 2016. He noted that contrary to talking heads who claimed Trump "never backed away" from the tape, Trump did explicitly release a recorded apology statement the night the tape dropped stating, "I said it, I was wrong, and I apologize."
True to his blog's long-running mission, Somerby uses the tape primarily as a case study to argue that the mainstream press routinely prioritizes rigid, tribal narratives over precise transcript reporting.”
Deflecting blame from Trump onto the “mainstream” media is a way of defending Trump. Somerby attacked the people who were criticizing Trump, in his usual excessively literal, focused on trivia manner.
Somerby also defended Trump’s “they let you do it” statement, again by attacking the press.
Then DG comes around again in his narrowly focused excessively literal way, to claim the Somerby didn’t defend Trump. When did Somerby defend the women (and girls) Trump has assaulted over the years?
"Somerby also defended Trump’s 'they let you do it' statement"
DeleteNo, he didn't. That's the point. If he did, you'd quote where he defended it, instead of giving me this Gish Gallop.
In reality, Somerby condemned the statement as an assault on the dignity of women, as I quoted and cited above.
Your excessively literal idea of what it means to defend someone is the problem here. Shifting the blame to someone else is a form of defense. Somerby doesn't give a damn about the "dignity" of women. If he did, he wouldn't have talked about Rachel Maddow stuffing money down her pants.
DeleteThe problem with Trump has nothing to do with the dignity of women. It is about physical attacks, sexual assaults that Trump committed and has been charged with. Indignity is when you break a heel and are hopping around on one foot. What Trump has done is called RAPE and it is a sex crime. Somerby assaults the dignity of women when he trivializes and minimizes those crimes by pretending this is about the press overstating something and not about Trump's ongoing mistreatment of women.
You are doing the same thing as Somerby, as you ignore the crimes and focus on silly sematics. It is time for you to go away. YOU are an assault on the dignity of everyone who comments here in good faith.
semantics
DeleteDon’t wear high heels. They’re an attempt to be eye candy, and they’re bad for your feet.
Deleteagree
DeleteWhen someone in the media says something false, Somerby may criticize them. For example, Somerby criticized the talking head who said Trump “never backed away” from what he said on the tape, when the truth was that Trump had apologized and admitted he was wrong.
DeleteBut criticizing media falsehoods is not a “defense” of what Trump said on the tape, which Somerby condemned.
And you know he condemned it. You’re just squirting ink to avoid admitting it.
If Trump admitted he was wrong, why did he repeat it in his deposition?
DeleteSomerby was not a crusader for press accuracy — he never debunked right wing lies. Somerby attacked the press to deflect criticism of Trump, Brock Turner, Roy Moore. This idea of Somerby as a press watchdog is a fraud.
Trump gave a minimal apology to win the election, not because he disavowed his bragging. His bad behavior continued.
DeleteIt was just locker room talk and boys will be boys but he admitted he was wrong? Gotcha.
DeleteLook at his asshole remark about Nicki Minaj’s butt, made at his latest rally. Somerby was a fool to suggest Trump was repentent. Meanwhile Trump was paying off Stormy and Karen MacDougal to save his campaign.
DeleteMore ink.
DeleteNo, this is an example from Trump showing he still disrespects women; his apology was worthless. We all saw that — why didn’t Somerby?
DeleteWatch the Elephant Graveyard videos. Gillis is not a comedian and is not funny. He is part of a fake, manufactured online pseudo-reality where he is represented as a comedian and funny to participants of the manufactured pseudo reality bubble. When he steps outside of this invented pseudo reality and has to go on live television, the manufactured reality is exposed and falls apart.
ReplyDeleteJust like many of us here exist in in a manufactured online pseudo-reality where Trump raping children and Putin being on the verge of attempting to conquer Western Europe is represented as truth. Online, interacting with our other buddies in the manufactured online pseudo-reality bubble, it's all "true" and we pretend like it's all true. It's a fun game. It's a virtual reality game.
And sadly, a lot of us here will never leave that manufactured online pseudo reality. Maybe at Thanksgiving dinner but that's about it. It's too fun to stay in the alternative reality online bubble. So that's what we do all day long everyday. Like children playing with blocks, we play with manufactured reality there. It's much more fun.
Gillis just shows what happens when one is forced outside of these new manufactured online realities where truth becomes anything you want it to be.
Watch the Elephant Graveyard videos.
Thank you for this.
DeleteOn the other hand, there's no Republican voter who isn't a bigot in the real world.
Delete12:45,
DeletePro tip: Accusing Trump of raping children is the best way to keep him from suing you.
There is an entire pseudo-reality on the internet, where the Republican Party isn't running an international pedophile ring.
DeleteThey say it replaced the one where gun owners were going to use their 2nd Amendment rights to fight government tyranny, instead of selling their guns to criminals on the black market.
This is why reality must be defended by fact-check lies on the internet, whether told by the president, Joe Rogan, or Somerby.
DeleteI don't live in Epstein's class and I don't hang out with Peter Thiel like Rogan does. I have met several of the men invited by Epstein to his dinners, while I was at Harvard and MIT. Several of them are jerks, without knowing anything about their other activities. You can't be a good decent person while raping young girls on a private island, so you won't be one in other aspects of life either.
At heart, the chasing after fame, access and money is the problem at the heart of the Elephant Gravesite. The ability of power to excuse rule-breaking is also there. If we can return society to a basis where being famous on the internet is not an accomplishment to be admired, and money doesn't buy privilege or escape from accountability, it will be a step toward a better reality.
We don't have to watch or attend or laugh at the ugliness that passes for humor. It seems to me that it is entirely male-oriented, but there are men who are disgusted by it too. We can opt out of this form of humor.
In all the time Somerby has been complaining about Gutfeld (who is a tamer version of what happens at stand-up performances), Somerby has never called for any of us to stop watching Gutfeld. Why not? He only says we should rise up and complain about him, here in blue America. To do that, we would have to watch him and I don't think anyone should do that. I won't. Why doesn't Somerby just tell everyone to avoid Fox and his show?
"Eventually, it fell to Tarlov to state her view. Correctly or otherwise, we find it hard to believe that she said what she actually thinks.
ReplyDeleteIn our view, it's time for Tarlov to leave this show."
How on earth would Somerby know what Tarlov really thinks?
If Gutfeld is not saying what he really thinks, is it time for him to leave the show too?
But the main problem with this remark by Somerby is that he never quotes what Tarlov actually said! How are we, his readers, to judge for ourselves whether she said something likely to be what she thinks, or not? We don't know what she said at all. Nice of Somerby to protect us from the burden of deciding for ourselves. Somerby gets to malign Tarlov without accountability for his accuracy at mindreading her. Does Somerby imagine that all women think alike or that all liberals hold the same opinions?
This is why Somerby is an asshole. The one woman who reacted to Gillis on Gutfeld's show, from a supposedly liberal viewpoint, is censored by Somerby. Does Somerby think she should have represented the "lefty lunatic" position or does he think she was too much of a "lefty lunatic" for his taste. We cannot know unless we go watch the Fox segments outselves. I refuse to do that. But perhaps that is what Somerby wants -- to increase Fox viewing among any liberals still reading his blog. A sane discussion of someone's statements on a given show would include quoting what they actually said. Tarlov doesn't get that courtesy, Somerby just gongs her off the show because of his own dislike of her. Since he would have done that to Maddow too, and she is plenty lefty, we have no way of knowing what bugs Somerby about Tarlov.
Most likely, Tarlov resembles Somerby's mother.
DeleteBy appearing on that show Tarlov is aiding the enemy.
DeleteSomerby is aiding the enemy more than Tarlov.
DeleteSomerby and Tarlov both help the enemy.
DeleteWatching Tarlov on Fox aids the enemy. Why does Somerby think he can do this every day and still be thought of as liberal?
Delete"Watching Tarlov on Fax aids the enemy."
DeleteJahvol, mein commandant! It is verboten!
That's way better than requiring everyone to watch Fox. Who is doing the forbidding? It makes a difference to your comparison with fascism.
DeleteTDH fails to consider the last line of gillis's anecdote - "And don't look, you're not supposed to look." The point is that woman go to the gym, baring almost all, and men are chastised for looking at them. Ignoring the last line of the anecdote is faulty on TDH's part. I wasn't aware of other parts of his monologue. It's seems it was tasteless and vulgar, in large measure. I watch some of the comedy specials on Netflix/Amazon - not many are that funny, and a lot of them are graphic, in bad taste to some. It's not all Henny Youngman and Bob Hope. Even then though, a lot of jokes were at the expense of women, e.g., mother-in-law jokes, women are bad drivers etc.
ReplyDeleteTake my Republican voter who isn't a bigot, if you can find one.
DeleteNo one cares what guys at the gym look at. You do know the difference between looking and ogling, right? Guys at the gym bother women by telling them their form is wrong, just to speak to them. That kind of thing is majorly annoying. That happens to me when I am gambling at a casino, and the guys don't know what they are talking about, and it doesn't depend on how I am dressed. Guys know how to behave and it is on them when they don't show courtesy to women in public places. And no, their looks are not an excuse. That's the equivalent of "she was asking for it."
DeleteAC/MA, watch those recommended Elephant Graveyard videos. A lot of people agree with you about the state of current comedy. But pls don't confuse comedy acts with real life.
AC/MA It's OK to call 'em whores as long as you don't look. Whatever dude.
DeleteThere are no thought police. Look at them and call them whores in your mind. If you call them whores out loud, you are a sexist asshole.
DeleteIs Melania a whore? She posed naked in photos before she met Trump and switched to a different line of work. There are clearly men who think all women are whores, no matter who they are or what they do, or how they dress. Join them, if you feel inclined, but you are still a sexist asshole for thinking that. It isn't a crime unless you act on those thoughts. Leave the women at the gym alone.
If you use the word “whore” you are a sexist asshole or an enabler of sexist assholes.
DeleteSometimes the word whore is accurate. It has a specific definition. It is highly accurate applied to Melania but not to women wearing athletic clothes in a gym (those clothes are manufactured and sold specifically to be used in gyms). It isn't the word that is sexist but the misuse of it to refer to women who are exercising at a gym.
DeleteYou don’t use the B word or the C word. Now learn to stop using the W word.
Delete"It is highly accurate applied to Melania but not to women wearing athletic clothes in a gym"
DeleteRight, but this controversy isn't about whether women in gyms in certain outfits are in fact whores. It is about whether they are dressing like whores, i.e. wearing sexually provocative outfits.
If a woman were dressed the way women dress for the gym, trying to pick up men on the street, she wouldn't be very successful. Gym clothes are not "sexually provocative." They are stretchy and non-binding for movement, washable, and in colors women like. That's why Gillis's remark was ridiculous.
DeleteGillis is saying that women are exciting to him when lifting or doing other exercises. That is inappropriate and tends to prevent women from exercising, which is not in anyone's health interests. This is about women being required to cross their legs at the ankles because that is the ladylike way, not at the knee. It is about women being force to avoid sharing space with men because men don't want them there. Women get harrassed in every non-traditional situation, especially at work, so this is nothing new. It is men being assholes by being aggressive (ogling), which doesn't stop with looking but includes active harrassment in gyms. Women have all experienced that and know what Gillis means, even if Somerby wishes to pretend to be clueless. That is why Gillis gets laughs and smirks with this routine. Not because anyone is confused about who is or is not a whore (apologies for the "w" word but it is what he said).
Delete"Gillis is saying that women are exciting to him when lifting or doing other exercises."
DeleteHe very clearly is not saying that.
He said women "dress like whores now" and he talked about the size and color of their shorts. He mentioned nothing about their workouts or movements in the gym.
Why would he say women look like whores if he weren’t having sexy thoughts about them?
DeleteOkay, let's try again. He thinks they dress like whores, and that may in fact cause him to have 'sexy' thoughts about them. But their 'lifting' and 'exercising' are not what is causing those 'sexy' thoughts.
DeleteIf he thinks whores wear exercise clothes, he must be 12 yo.
DeleteI’m twelve years old, and I don’t think that. Also, my mom told me not to use the W word.
DeleteDon’t let assholes hide behind euphemisms.
DeleteGillis is an attention whore.
DeleteThe best advice is don’t ogle women in gyms. One time the old man was there and his friend, the owner, had to ask a regular female client to change clothes or leave because her thin white Lyra shorts left nothing to the imagination. I asked him how far HIS imagination had gotten, and he said “to the elliptical machine”. Let gym owners handle this stuff. The people who do complain to them are generally women.
DeleteDo take a minute and consider why anything being left to the imagination is a requirement for women but not for men.
DeleteAnonymouse 4:42pm, we can probably thank jockstraps.
DeleteI’d prefer to work out naked, but I’ve never found one person, male or female, who agrees with me.
DeleteThe original Olympics were conducted naked. Many men use the sauna naked and swim naked.
DeleteAnonymouse 4:58pm, I swim and I agree. You can manage au naturel outside of a swimming pool as long as you remember where you hung your swimsuit or clothes.
DeleteThat was men only. No thanks. I want to work out with naked men and naked women. But I can’t talk anybody into it.
DeleteCecelia, let’s get together. I’ll try to to ogle you, but is it OK if I sneak a peak?
DeleteIck. I meant I’ll try not to ogle you.
DeleteAnonymouse 5:18pm, nice sentiment either way.
Delete@5:10 there are still nudists who do this, google them in your state
DeleteIf you watch those Elephant Graveyard videos, you can't help wondering why Somerby is talking about Gutfeld and Shane Gillis and not the more serious impact of Rogan on the last election and his ongoing influence on a cult that is turning away from Trump and towards who? Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, tech-bro ideology, collusion with Russia under the next asshole president willing to be their figurehead?
ReplyDeleteI had no idea comedians were part of the Epstein class. But this does explain why Somerby never mentions Epstein.
DeleteProbably for the same reason you never talked about it.
DeleteI frequently ask why Somerby is unwilling to discuss Trump's relationship with Epstein here at this blog.
DeleteYes. Of course. After all, he was trafficking children to a network of elite pedophiles. But discussing Trump's relationship with Epstein isn't what is suggested above at 5:20.
DeleteResponding to 5:59 not 5:20
Delete5:59 doesn't say anything about Epstein either.
DeleteBut it's good to bring up Epstein. After all, inside the hellscape of your invented online simulacrum, it's true that Epstein was trafficking children to scores of Republican pedophiles in an organized ring of blackmail and deception benefiting Israel. And you have to fight for what's right, for what's real and true inside the fictional, invented, fantasy game world in which you place yourself all day everyday to gambol and play.
DeleteThe next Republican who doesn't support pedophilia will be the first.
DeleteEpstein acquired hundreds of millions of dollars in legitimate business ventures. Hahahahaha.
DeleteHow ironic would it be if the imaginary Republican voter who isn't a bigot, turned out to be the same imaginary Republican voter who has a problem with child rape?
DeleteIf the Democrats win, we’ll have riots, just like France.
ReplyDeleteYou’re demented.
DeleteNo, they are brainwashed. Fox has been playing the French protests non-stop for a week telling the cult it's coming to America if the fascists lose.
DeleteIt came to Minnesota to the tune of $500 million during the Summer of Love riots and that’s just one state.
DeleteWhy do you brainlessly repeat “summer of love” like an automaton? Do you think you’re being clever, you nasty hater?
DeleteThat sounds like a good reason not to cause major unrest among the populace (anywhere, not just in MN) over injustices, failure to conduct fair elections, and corruption in Trump's administration.
DeleteCecelia, do you imagine that people are going to stop caring about mistreatment of minorities just because there is a pricetag on the resistance needed in 2020 to get the government's attention? George Floyd was murdered by police. People aren't going to stand for shit like that, any more than the murders by ICE of Good and Pretti are bygones.
If our electoral system cannot throw the bums out of office, street protests are the method of last resort for communicating to our leaders what is acceptable and what is not. That goes back to 1776.
"If the Democrats win, we’ll have riots, just like France."
DeleteWhy?
Why? Why not? I don’t even try to make sense. I’m a magat.
DeletePennies on the dollar compared to the economic damage inflicted by the Trump admin and ICE fucking goons. Fuck off Trannytroll.
DeleteAnonymouse 5:03pm, you anonymices simultaneously argue against the cost of unrest and for the cost of unrest. You mentioned Fox News trying to alarm the public, well, we already have it experienced it, Fox News. We’ve foot that bill before.
DeleteNo one wants unrest. We want a functional government without corruption and collusion with Russia and tormenting of immigrants. BLM and the George Floyd protests are about equal treatment of minorities. The cost was footed by the government, thus the people, and it was much less than Trump is spending on his stupid vanity projects, which are not just costly but also illegal. When people take to the streets, it is a last resort against govt wrongdoing that we have been unable to fix any other way. It is definitely worth whatever it costs because you cannot put too high a price on freedom and adherence to our constitution.
DeleteNo, 500 million per one state should be way more than enough blood money for you guys. Especially, when you consider that the police officer went to jail. I’m not surprised anonymices see it differently. In another context, if Somerby blogged that the Summer of Love could be credited as being successful and effective you would immediately disavow any widespread meaningful change. That’s the way it is around here. All anonymices can do is to hope that Europe succumbs to George Soros. Their leadership certainly seems more than willing to oblige.
DeleteCecelia, do you think Derek Chauvin committed a crime?
DeleteFrom what I've read, peaceful protests do accomplish change. You (and the right) want to conflate the rioters (who are largely opportunistically engaging in looting and vandalism) with the protesters, who are assembling and expressing their views as is permitted under our constitution (the right to assembly).
DeleteThe worse President Trump behaves, the more likely there will be riots and peaceful protests both, if he does not permit a peaceful transition after the midterms. Europe has different issues.
Our country resulted from a protest.
DeleteIf democrats take control, the only people protesting will be butthurt magats, filing lawsuits to overturn the will of the people.
Fuck off TrannySoros troll. Fuck wrong with you you fucking weirdo?
DeleteFear - mongering George Soros, are we? What are you, an octogenarian Fox viewer? Geez.
DeleteTiedrich says:
ReplyDelete"But first, we really need to touch on a thing Donny said at his hate-rally last night — because it was pretty much one of the most callous fucktangle of word-adjacent mouth-farts ever to have secreted from his rotting face-hole.
Trump: “Our country is making hundreds of billions of dollars because of what’s happening in the Middle East. They’re making hundreds of billions, our country is, on oil. So, we’re making hundreds and hundreds of billions, trillions of dollars. And my people said ‘please don’t mention that, sir,’ because people are paying a little higher— we’re making money like this country has never made before. The fake news will say ‘he’s bragging about making money, while people are suffering at the— at the’— I can just see the fake headlines. But I don’t give a damn, I’m going to say it. We’re making a frickin’ fortune.”
Tiedrich: Mister President, sir — if that really is your name — I have a question: Who the fuck is we, who is making this “frickin’ fortune”?
Because it sure as hell isn’t me. And I know it’s not the average American, sitting at home, trying to figure out which bills to put off paying for another month, to try to make ends meet.
Of course you know who Donny is referring to when he says ‘we’re making a frickin’ fortune” — he’s talking about himself, his cronies, and his felonious family. That’s all who Donny cares about. We the People can go kick rocks.
This isn’t even ‘let them eat cake.’ It’s more like ‘let them eat fuck-all, I could give a shit.’"
Trump's dementia isn't helping Republicans trying to conduct normal campaigns.
Our president has no dignity, why should Shane Gillis?
ReplyDeleteWe are better than this. Throw these bums out of office.
We are not better than this. Magats are us.
DeleteBullshit, 8:35.
Delete8:35. I have no doubt that you are describing yourself and your clan accurately.
DeleteFrom Driftglass:
ReplyDelete"So, having cursorily examined everyone's favorite democracy-saving magic bullets, let's consider mine.
First, the Conservative media -- all of it -- agrees to get out of the business of spreading lies, slander, bullshit conspiracies, and racist garbage.
This would cut off the poison that's killing the country on the supply side.
Second, Republican voters choose to stop seeking and heeding lies, slander, bullshit conspiracies, and racist garbage.
This would cut off the poison that's killing the country on the demand side.
Third, the legacy media -- all of it -- agrees to stop the "Both Sides" false equivalence nonsense, and instead report bluntly and honestly on the gargantuan asymmetry between American fascists and the opponents of American fascism.
This would leave undecided/swing/independent voters no place to hide.
Now all three of these genius ideas of mine are, of course, ludicrous. Literally unthinkable. Fine. But let's you and I take the next step and ask a more important question. Why? Because you'd have to agree that any one of those three weird tricks would be sufficient to back us away from the abyss, and all three together would heal this country almost overnight."
Sayonara Bolsonaro.
ReplyDeleteIn breaking news, Trump has declared that Kylie Minogue has a nice ass.
ReplyDeleteBreaking news? That’s cracking news.
