Just as fractal geometry doesn’t actually reproduce anything real, but rather a simulacrum of reality, so does mathematics. To make profound statements about combining Platonic (non-real, which I think should be left out entirely) ideas with the actual world, and creating a synthesis of “the one true world” is outlandish. I say that as a material reductionist. We got what we got, and unless you believe in a heavenly afterlife, that’s all we got.

That’s how I read Bob. E.O. Wilson speaks of a consilience between the varying human endeavors: Science, the humanities, and art. But he speaks of these things in terms of preserving our very existence. Saying “…no doubt there are not really three worlds, but one, the true nature of which we do not even glimpse at present,” does strike me as total nonsense, because it doesn’t matter. What matters is our material existence, and no high-falutin’ conjecture is going to change that. Ask poor person if they give a flyin’ fuck about Platonism.

Leroy

P.S. You might find an unemployed philosopher who still does.

Leroyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02021120389394278239noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-24835391824766341002019-03-21T12:44:47.317-04:002019-03-21T12:44:47.317-04:00“Tomorrow: "But does the Platonic world of ma...“Tomorrow: "But does the Platonic world of mathematics really exist? And if so, where is it?"”

Why even bother? Somerby has already pronounced it “crazy”, “gone wild”, “the thoughts of a person who's stark raving mad”, “lack of intellectual ability”, “disordered”, “the views of a madman”, “irrational”, “fatuous, crazy, incoherent or bizarre”, “very, very strange”, “nonsense”, “comical”, “a semantic morass”, “a pointless pseudo-debate”, “foolishness”, etc. A veritable Roget’s thesaurus.

All this with an added “seems to be” or “apparent” that serves only to heighten the snark by pretending to a false modesty, ie “I *could* be wrong.” Sure, ok.

And, up till now, no attempt to deal with it logically or to make any coherent, philosophically rigorous argument against it, the way, you know, an actual philosopher would do. He simply becomes more strident and derisive in his attempt to convince anyone who doesn’t share his opinion.

Somerby has already answered his own question, and is furiously trying to prejudice the TDH reader against taking the idea of mathematical Platonism seriously.

His series on Gödel was another angle. He wanted to show that Gödel was mentally ill, and to imply that mathematical Platonism, which Gödel believed in, was the product of a diseased mind and must therefore itself be crazy. The illogic of this argument should be obvious.

Are all of these mathematicians that Livio mentions really “mad”? That’s quite a charge. Unfortunately, unlike Gödel, that doesn’t fit their biographies. I will restate this from a comment I made a couple of days ago:

“It might be useful to note that on page 3, two paragraphs below the passage quoted by Somerby, Livio quotes Penrose saying “no doubt there are not really three worlds, but one, the true nature of which we do not even glimpse at present.”

Somerby “apparently” forgot to mention that. It undermines Somerby’s view of these mathematicians as “mad men.” It would appear that Penrose sees a certain utility in positing the reality of mathematical objects, and is not a mindless believer in some mystical third reality.

Aside from being filled with hateful disdain, Somerby’s world seems barren, and mundane. He seems unwilling to entertain the fascinating ideas of lifelong, passionate mathematicians or to take these ideas as a window into their world. And more than that, he mocks them.

In what way are their ideas truly incoherent, or damaging, or mad, and why is Somerby not open to the possibility that these ideas are a way of thinking about the world and that they can produce useful results in the field of mathematics and hence physics and other natural sciences?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-40119807019433889852019-03-21T11:52:53.741-04:002019-03-21T11:52:53.741-04:00I am so sick of [sic].I am so sick of [sic].Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-30990327928096156962019-03-21T11:11:49.125-04:002019-03-21T11:11:49.125-04:00“As you know, we're just killing time at this ...“As you know, we're just killing time at this site“

Truer words were never spoken.
