But that's hardly the point of my comments. My point -- and try to follow along here -- is that the teahadist organizations received treatment that didn't rise to the claimed "hassling." There's no doubt the IRS should follow the rules and follow them evenhandedly, but nothing the IRS did impeded any political activity. In other words this is another phony "scandal."

Your second sentence doesn't parse in English, so I'm not really sure what you're saying, but the IRS didn't ask for identification of voters. It didn't even ask for identification of contributors, which 501(c)4's are allowed to keep secret. Regardless of whether they register with the IRS or not. Registration is voluntary and gives a safe harbor from anyone who challenges their status and demands their list of contributors. Which, as far as I know, has never happened, and certainly didn't before the 2012 elections. Claiming "voter suppression" is injecting more hot air to inflate the "scandal." My apologies if that's not what you're claiming .deadratnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-4527922661834431082013-06-11T00:53:08.050-04:002013-06-11T00:53:08.050-04:00Those notoriously non-political 501(c)(4) orgs, O...Those notoriously non-political 501(c)(4) orgs, Organizing for America and Media Matters don't draw your ire, for some reason. It's not like fearing an audit or a fine or an indictment. And I understand that most of the teahadist money-laundering organizations did exactly that: they answered the questions in their resubmitted applications.

And as for the anti-abortion group that was asked about their picketing Planned Parenthood? Crymeafugginriver. They were applying for 501(c)3 status, i.e., as a charitable organization. That's different. Those folks are banned from any political activity. And requiring them to promise not to picket Planned Parenthood - inappropriate, but no harm, no foul.Mr. Credulousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-11574805572299376392013-06-10T16:33:00.850-04:002013-06-10T16:33:00.850-04:00Here's some education for you, Dave:

The exact number of visits makes a difference because the actual number of visits (most of which were not to the White House itself) was small -- about a dozen judging from the logs that show arrival and departure times for Shulman. The rest were meetings for which he was "precleared" and which he didn't attend.

Next, while Shulman was Director, the Office of Exempt Organizations did not punish anyone's political adversaries. Some teahadist money-laundering groups had their 501(c)4 tax exempt status delayed. Not denied, but delayed, a circumstance that would have affected their political activities not at all. During their investigations, the groups were apparently asked inappropriate questions about their activities, and while that shouldn't have happened and should be stopped, such questioning in no way impeded the political activities of the questioned organizations.

What's not clear about this?deadratnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-83468051248002815232013-06-10T14:04:15.752-04:002013-06-10T14:04:15.752-04:00"It would be a poor refutation ...."

How frequently have other IRS directors visited the WH? They'd still be left with two facts: Shulman visited the WH a lot of times. And, Shulman headed the IRS during a period when they abused their power to punish political adversaries.David in Calnoreply@blogger.com
