Not even in the same way.

Let us recall two disastrous debate performances, Obama in the first one, Romney in the second one.

Immediately after the first debate, MSNBC hosts absolutely flailed Obama. After the second debate, the Fox and the right-wing echo chamber began doubling down on Benghazi to cover Romney's pratfall.

This was what Kevin Drum, immediately after the first debate, sarcastically called the "hack gap." He could not imagine right-wing hacks going after Romney after such a poor debate performance anywhere resembling the conniption Chris Matthews had after the first debate, and the right-wing hacks pretty quickly proved him right after the second debate.

In short, Drum's post -- which some including Somerby mistook as a call for more left-wing hacks -- was exposing a fundamental difference in the WAY Fox & MNSNC operate, and not just the degree.

And you know what? Neither network really meant shit to a tree this election cycle. Yeah, they got their own choirs that they preach too, but 120 million Americans -- far greater than the niche audiences both these networks attract combined -- had the final say.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-82040120350053479972012-11-08T18:09:29.366-05:002012-11-08T18:09:29.366-05:00The Anonymous idiot knows that full well, Matt. It's also odd that you're tired of every kind of interminable bullcrap, except the variety which appears here day after day -- the most repetitive blog in the universe?

Of course, criticism of MSNBC, even on a daily basis, might still be useful. What's a strange, however, is blaming unnamed liberals (or than your 3 relations) for corporate malfeasance over which they have no control.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-25938380856359453832012-11-08T15:06:49.617-05:002012-11-08T15:06:49.617-05:00Bob, when you can give me a single example of a &q...Bob, when you can give me a single example of a "liberal" politician bowing, scraping, kissing the hindquarters of, and profusely apologizing when he/she steps out of line to any MSNBC host, like the way Republicans bow, scrap, kiss the hindquarters of and profusely apologize any time they wind up on the wrong side of Rush, then you can play the equivalency game.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-76876794039696015352012-11-08T15:04:45.927-05:002012-11-08T15:04:45.927-05:00"wild expressions of enthusiasm, are where?&q..."wild expressions of enthusiasm, are where?"

Among my relatives, for three. Yes, its programs do get viewers, but substantially fewer than (say) O'Reilly & Co. and far, far fewer than any given episode of Glee or Dancing With the Stars.

And even among these few views, it's impossible to know how they actually regard MSNBC programming. In another words, is MSNBC the fault of its viewers, or of liberals generally, and if so, are those parties in any position to reform it?

The print columnists and network-approved or News Hour liberals virtually never mention it. Similarly, the Greenwalds and Chomskys rarely have anything to say about it. There is the occasional suggestion that having Rachel Maddow on the air is better than nothing, and that she herself is constrained by corporate imperatives, but wild expressions of enthusiasm, are where?

It's great to learn that Bob hates MSNBC. And despite the fact that his attacks typically come from the right, and only rarely from the left -- you don't, for example, hear criticism of Rachel Maddow at TDH for failing to point out that the U.S. is a purveyor of terrorism, using definitions worked up by our own State Department -- one would still like to see the improved discourse Bob argues for. But this notion would seem to presuppose that MSNBC is a liberal institution which responds to reasoned criticism -- as opposed to corporation interested in nothing but the bottom line.

So which is it? Is MSNBC a democratically conceived institution which has moral responsibilities to the public and is responsive to criticism, and for which self-described liberals therefore bear some responsibility, or is it an authoritarian economic entity which answers to no one but its owners?

Claiming that MSNBC is regarded as "The One True Liberal Channel" is like saying Pepsi or Coke are "The One True Elixir". And liberals are supposed to answer for these advertising claims? Or for the fact that some people drink colored water with sugar?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-15341715802134776682012-11-08T11:43:48.243-05:002012-11-08T11:43:48.243-05:00"Can this be the best the New York Times [a f..."Can this be the best the New York Times [a famous but intellectually challenged American pseudo-newspaper] can do?"

No.

There's A.O.
