If Somerby had read the book, he would know that a key event is an accusation of sexual abuse in which the woman making that accusation was accused of making things up too, then gaslighted into retracting the accusation.

Of course she knows that different words can be applied to the same events!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-73528484700472631672021-09-20T10:46:05.624-04:002021-09-20T10:46:05.624-04:00"It's the most important philosophy book,..."It's the most important philosophy book, and it lies in the village graveyard, never consulted or used."

Never consulted or used by the general public. The unconscious has strongest impact in situations where we are not exerting conscious will.

This is a revisiting of a problem that was settled about 60 years ago during debates between the behaviorists and those espousing free will and rejecting the determinism of behavor rewarded and punished by circumstances, outside our awareness. When behavior is brought into consciousness, then our behavor becomes explicit and willed and subject to examination. That is part of what therapy does -- it brings the unconscious into consciousness so that it can be evaluated and become deliberate or be replaced with other chosen behavior.

So this is nothing new, even if it is new to Brooks and Somerby.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
