Clearly if Ripley and Obama are both singing this tune the corporate reformers must have found a way to privatize that.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-55778532802543041702013-10-15T10:36:55.112-04:002013-10-15T10:36:55.112-04:00Amanda Ripley passes herself off as an education &...Amanda Ripley passes herself off as an education "expert." She's not. Not even close.

Of course, Ripley also poses as an "investigative journalist" who engages in "groundbreaking research." Sigh.

It appears the Ripley's "research" consists merely of repeating the corporate "reform" mantra. We have corrupted system perpetuated by large corporate entities who are some of he biggest tax cheats in the country: it marginalizes workers and citizens, off-shores millions of jobs, creates enormous inequities in income and wealth through transfers of money from public treasuries to private coffers, and piles up big budget deficits and debt. And they tell us – Ripley tells us – that the solution lies in better teachers, more "rigorous" standards, and "accountability."

There is simply no logic to this type specious thinking. There's also no evidence.

The "talented" very-privileged Lawrenceville-schooled Ripley would have us believe that her observational study of three American suburban exchange students – and carefully-selected PISA scores – is evidence enough. Obviously she's wrong.

People like Ripley argue that Common Core “tests are necessary” for “use in teacher and principal evaluation.” After more than a decade of tests and “data-driven” instruction and evaluation, we need even MORE of it? Are they serious? This is like saying the economy needs more tax cuts for corporations and the rich to “stimulate” job creation.

Oh, but wait. That's exactly what many of the corporate "reformers" want.

Count Ripley among the punditry class' walking dead.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-1131055299942252382013-10-15T00:23:24.913-04:002013-10-15T00:23:24.913-04:00I am looking forward to the alternative tests whic...I am looking forward to the alternative tests which prove American adults are not dumber than their fifteen year olds (I would have called them children or boys and girls, but the post on Malala taught me I should know better.) I'm sure TDH will cover these in later posts and prove Ripley overlooked them. It seems a mess. I met someone who grew up in rural Turkey and he said that they had the same teacher for the first 5 years, i.e., that teacher stayed with the same students until maybe age 10. She became almost family. It sounded nice, like the teacher would be a more nurturing figure and a softer environment for the kids.Lionelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06336249052780481883noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-22868599205567942472013-10-14T19:17:57.622-04:002013-10-14T19:17:57.622-04:00Not to mention that it's just a wee bit disin...Not to mention that it's just a wee bit disingenuous for a national columnist, in the nation's "Paper of Record", to claim that she was just giving a presidential candidate a friendly little noogie as she belittled him during an election campaign.CeceliaMchttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16017255006204800193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-58922579294105509362013-10-14T19:05:37.637-04:002013-10-14T19:05:37.637-04:00What Dowd did was not teasing "a little bit.&...What Dowd did was not teasing "a little bit."

Bob has already explained that she does not have the experience and has not demonstrated sufficient knowledge to be an expert. Yet she has no qualms about passing herself off as one. That is how quacks, charlatans and con artists operate. Bob is too nice to call her one, but the shoe fits. I don't see any connection between that and what Dowd did, especially since Al Gore has certainly earned the right to be self-righteous and the man was VP of the USA. Did she want him to behave more like Clinton?

It is irritating when people draw analogies based on superficial similarity without seeing how things are different in their essence (yes, apples and oranges).Lindynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-61628545952696714292013-10-14T17:41:43.595-04:002013-10-14T17:41:43.595-04:00Not fair!
