We liberals, South Carolina edition!

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2012

We urge Mike to hang on: The analysts simply love Michael Tomasky! Their analysis: Good heart, sound mind.

But we liberals! You know how we are!

Today, Tomasky was amazed to find TCM on the list of cable channels in his hotel room—his hotel room in (gasp!) South Carolina!

“Citadel of culture,” he quips.

TCM can be found all over the country. It can even be found in midtown Manhattan, another point which seems to have Mike confused.

We liberals! At any rate:

“Keep watching, Tomasky,” the analysts cried. At 9:45 Southern Standard Time, you can watch My Brilliant Career! Along with Notorious and Casablanca, it’s our favorite film. We think it's a pure perfect jewel.

It will air all over the country. As far as we know, it will even air in fetid southern lands!

Tomasky's headline chez The Beast: “South Carolina, Who Knew?”

  1. I luv TCM! Especially the crude Jack Abramoff logo, right out of Gang Busters comic books!

  2. It's weird Tomasky said that, he hails from West Virgina, a place often looked down upon by so called elites as well.

  3. Often I begin to loose heart in TCM, with their idiotic themes (Robert Taylor and James Caan marathons? who cares!) or their insistance on showing "In the Heat of the Night" every two weeks. Then a weekend schedule like this comes along. There was even a little Felini the other night. And this month it's Mack Sennett every Thursday. If there was a cable package featuring nothing but PBS, the two C-SPANs, and TCM, I'd be perfectly happy. Sign me up for their cruise. Better to be stuck on a boat with Debbie Reynolds and Arlene Dahl than Fred Barnes and Bill Kristol.

  4. Did you read Nocera this morning? Good God, the man admits he watched the GOP Convention on TV -- and only casually at that! Then he closes by promising to do the same for the Dems. L-A-Z-Y bum.

(Plus, his "mea culpa" for supporting "honest guy" Paul Ryan is so deeply disingenuous, self-serving and misleading, Krugman should tear him to pieces BY NAME for it. But it will never happen. As you often note: "Darlings, it just isn't done.")

    1. So what exactly did Nocera miss by watching the major speeches on TV instead of from the convention floor?

As he notes, party conventions are well-scripted (in his words: "Clint Eastwood aside") coronations of candidates chosen months ago in the primary/caucus system.

    2. Well, we'll never know...will we? He's free to deprioritize the convention and not go... but then he should devote his column to some other topic.

This slacker-millionaire gets paid big bucks and is given column inches in "The Paper of Record"... deciding something is not worth investigating beyond the TV screen and then writing about it is tantamount to becoming a gossip columnist. If you want commentary like that, just visit the water cooler at work; what you'll hear there will be just as insightful.

    3. Oh, and by the way, he makes it a specific point to assert just how casually he was watching, on top of that. Does that show good journalistic instincts? Do you want to be informed by people like this?

    4. Well, here's a bit of sad truth. Not being obsessively/compulsively fixated on the Op-Ed page of the New York Times as the sole source of all truth, I had no idea who Joe Nocera was until you mentioned him.

I also found during the GOP Convention no shortage of news coverage, despite the fact that Nocera chose to watch it on TV. And this includes many newer forms of "media" in this Information Age.

So I would kindly appreciate it in the future if you wouldn't consider me uninformed because a certain columnist for the New York Times whom I've never read before chose to cover this farce from the comfort of his couch.

Lazy? Yep. End of the Western Civilization as we know it? Hardly.

    5. Nobody insists it has to be the EoWC to matter except you, asshole. That's your "go to" trope.

      It's shit journalism.

"Not being obsessively/compulsively fixated on the Op-Ed page of the New York Times as the sole source of all truth" Give every one a break and quit spitting this shit in response to having your lame points eviscerated.

You wanted to defend you man Nocera's journalism, which you now admit was "lazy" -- but first you just have to try to imply that the Howler and/or your own critics have only one "source of truth."

You could make yourself look stupider, but you'd have to try.

      Go on.

    6. "You wanted to defend you man Nocera's journalism . . ."

      Reading Comprehension 101:

"Not being obsessively/compulsively fixated on the Op-Ed page of the New York Times as the sole source of all truth, I had no idea who Joe Nocera was until you mentioned him."

Allow me to state it more simply. I had never, ever read a Joe Nocera column before. Mow all of the sudden he's "my man"?

And you think I look stupid?

  5. Knew you'd bite.

"So what exactly did Nocera miss?..." "As he notes..."

You came with your defense of Nocera -- it got mopped up -- now you want to pretend otherwise?

You'd be funnier if we could see your Cheeto'd face.

    1. So asking the person who was so upset that Nocera didn't go to the convention what story went uncovered because Nocera wasn't there is the same as defending a columnist I never heard of before, much less read before?

Good grief, it wasn't like Nocera's decision to stay home meant that the convention went uncovered. Is that so hard for you to understand?

Or are you one of the Bobinistas who think the only media worth criticizing is the NYT and MSNBC?

      Delete
    2. "what story went uncovered" -- another of your bullshit standards, but of course nothing to do with what was suggested about Nocera by David Neuschulz's comment. We indeed won't know what *Nocera* missed, but coverage by others of the convention is no defense at all of Nocera's own lazy bullshit.

But you pretend is has to be about "End of the Western Civilization as we know it" to be relevant. You pretend that's someone else's standard? We see it only as your last line of defense.

Then you pretend you weren't defending Nocera. Of course you were. You just *had* to: A commenter who clearly had sympathy with Somerby had criticised Nocera!

You think it matters to anyone whether you'd heard of or read Nocera before? Clue: it doesn't matter at all.

Anyone who can read is well aware -- you're only here in your self-assigned and poorly-performed role as the loather of all things Somerby.

"who think the only media worth criticizing is the NYT and MSNBC"

Dude, you're just phoning it it now!

That's like something you keep on auto-repeat: "Someone criticised something in the Times -- I know, I'll say "You Bobinistas think the only media worth criticizing is the NYT!" God I'm clever.

Yeah, mom, I'll be up in a minute... Damnit!"
