Is there some way to deport Katty Kay?

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2012

Simpering ninnies, go home: Midway through last evening's hour, Katty Kay showed up to expound on the Charlie Rose show.

Katty was in a serious twit about the evening's debate. This is what Katty Kay saw when Biden and Ryan debated:
ROSE (10/11/12) Katty Kay, you are coming to us now from Washington. Your impressions?

KAY: Yes, I agree, I think that Paul Ryan you know performed well and Republicans will be quite happy with him. He was clear, he was concise, he too was energetic. And look, we’ve never seen him perform on such a huge national platform as this one, and he held his own against Joe Biden. I mean, this debate— Some polls are giving it to Biden, some polls are giving it to Ryan, which suggests to me that it’s pretty much of a wash.

I wonder how much this helped Barack Obama. I think that one of the things that people are going to remember about this debate is less what Joe Biden or Paul Ryan said than Joe Biden's constant smiling, shaking his head, oh, my God, looking I thought at some point at something that was just suggesting maybe a little unhinged. I actually thought it came across as slightly condescending, patronizing, perhaps even a little arrogant and that's exactly the same rap that some people have against Barack Obama's performance just recently.

You know the shtick against Obama if there is one yet is that he has a tendency to be a little bit arrogant. The last thing the White House needs at the moment is for people to turn around and say, “Look this arrogant White House, they don’t listen to other people, they don't take this format seriously and they are not taking us seriously.” And I think that could have hurt with some swing voters.

I just, I— From the feedback I’ve had from people that were watching in their homes, there were even people who had a tendency to—

ROSE: Yes.

KAY: —want Biden to do well, they didn't like what they saw just in terms of his body language.
Asked to voice her basic reaction, Katty found nothing to comment on except Biden's body language. That's the feedback she was getting! From people who watched in their homes!

In fairness, Kay is a top-notch analyst. Consider this example:

“Some polls are giving it to Biden, some polls are giving it to Ryan, which suggests to me that it’s pretty much of a wash.”

Only the BBC presents such trenchant work.

Let us translate the rest of the commnents by this very bad person:

Katty Kay is paid large sums of money.

Katty Kay has excellent health care. She will never need Social Security. She eats in great restaurants; she drives great cars.

She doesn’t give a flying fuck. She lives to clown and piddle and diddle with others of her class.

Question: Is there some possible way to send this empty suit home?

  1. Sorry, Bob. IMHO Kay is right. Biden's behavior is what people will remember. IMHO that's as it should be. because Biden's conduct was so unacceptible.

BTW Kay was generous to describe Biden's antics merely as "body language." In fact, he interrupted Ryan dozens of times. While Ryan was speaking, Biden made childish deprecating sounds and even made faces.

Put it this way: Gore was unfairly criticized for sighing a couple of times; Biden actually did what Gore was charged with, and more.

    1. In your dreams. It was mildly irritating, but overwhelmingly outweighed by the substantive whuppin he gave Boy Ryan.

    2. Biden's behavior is what people will remember probably because the lame ass press will talk about nothing else.

  2. Bob, I think you may have taken dictation from my shouting at the television last night while Kitty Katty was prattling away.

    Well said.

  3. P.S. to above post. This Republican ad is a video of a few of the times when Biden was behaving as I described. Can you watch it without cringing?

    1. Obama got us out of Iraq, just like he said he would,
he's getting us out of Afghanistan, too -just like he aid he would.

Ryan = totally clueless on foreign policy. sounded like a Cub Scout being taught by a master statesman.

    2. You know, the first thing I look for when deciding which candidate for office I want to support, is whether they make "childish deprecating sounds" and "faces" when their opponent is speaking. That, to me, is far more important than the substance of what is being said.

    3. I think he is laughing because he thinks what Ryan is saying is ridiculous. Why can't serious people in the media talk about what Biden and Ryan said, rather than piffle like this?

    4. I'm like you, AnonymousOctober 12, 2012 5:17 PM. Issues are paramount. I'd probably defend my side's candidate if s/he were as rude and childish as Biden.

However, what about the Undecideds and Independents? They're apt to be in the middle on policy, so they may put more weight on personal characteristies. Thus, they might give more attendion than we would to whether a candidate looks and sounds Presidential.

    5. David in Cal, according to CBS news undecided voters liked VP Biden over Rep Ryan 50% to 31%. I do understand your "concern" however.

    6. "I'd probably defend my side's candidate of s/he were as rude and childish as Biden."

David meant that he'd defend his side's candidate if s/he were as mendacious and hypocritical as Ryan. Sometimes the echo chamber's narrative gets lost in the constant dissembling of facts.

Because it's easier. Understanding issues and figuring out how to explain them is hard work.

    8. policymic reports:

According to the CNN poll of independents, Paul Ryan won the debate, 48% to 44%. The same poll showed that people who watched the debate believed that Paul Ryan expressed himself better than Joe Biden, 50%-41%. An NBC poll of 435 uncommitted voters after the debate showed Paul Ryan winning with 63% to 31%. CNBC had it 56% to 36%, again with Paul Ryan coming out on top. Even the Danville Advocate Messenger had Paul Ryan on top at the end of the day, attracting 56% to Biden's 41%.

OTOH Anthony Duval correctly says CBS's poll of independents gave Biden a big win. I don't know why these polls results were so different.

I think Biden's laughter was a deliberate strategy to make Ryan's comments seem ridiculous and to throw Ryan off his stride. IMHO Biden's strategy worked, but at a cost. Biden came across as a clown, rather than someone seriously concerned about the important issues.

Naturally people aren't taking Biden's comments seriously. We may laugh at Krusty, but we don't look to him for statesmanlike leadership.

  6. As I posted, Biden scored a clear victory, and for the likes of Dave in Ca, the best he's
got is a slight variation on Gore's "sighing" nonsense. But by now most people know
conservatives have done such incredible damage to America in the new Century that
laughing at them is very generous indeed. Not that Biden stopped Ryan from making his points or from expressing himself.

  7. Biden took Ryan to the woodshed and whupped his tuches. It was great.

But beyond performance, Biden repeatedly called attention not just to the "middle class," a term he uttered more than once, but also to working-class people. When he said, "They can't afford it," I yelled out, YES! Someone among the millionaire zombiebots on TV actually grasps that not everyone in the US--the vast majority of Americans--cannot afford all the crap that the Romneys and Ryans and even the Democrats seem to take for granted, because members of Congress and the President candidates (save Biden) are so wealthy and their supporters are grotesquely rich.

He made such points over and over. I noted this morning, however, that not a single radio program on NPR, and none of the morning TV shows, broached a single one of these comments. Instead, they were playing up Ryan's demeanor, and Biden's style.

That silence about substance says it all.

  8. Katty Kay is somebody's sexual fantasy that I've never really understood. However, PBS News Hour had some idiot (or idiots) or other expressing similar concerns about Biden's simon-the-likeable smile. But fuck me, you'd have to be brain-dead if Ryan's blatant lying didn't cause you to roll your eyes. The more I see of this shit the more I believe America deserves Romney.

  9. Good god, can Somerby really be that dumb?

Like it or not, these debates are as much if not more about style than substance. If you don't think there are millions of voters who vote based on perceptions of style, you're dreaming. Katty was right to call it for what it is.

Ryan maybe be a lying dissembling fool but I'm sure to a lot of voters he came across as calm and articulate. For people who didn't know the facts, I'm guessing he was convincing. Biden may have had more facts on his side but he didn't present them in any kind of cogent rational way, he just smirked, interrupted and spewed, I think if you weren't on his side to begin with, he made it easy to write off his comments as the rantings of a rabid blowhard.

    1. Sure. It's all about style when your boy gets his keester handed to him. It's all about substance when he's the one doing the keester-thumping.

And on that note, I pay pretty close attention, but I guess since I don't watch either the BBC or Charlie Rose as much as Somerby thinks the rest of the world does, I am not really that concerned about what the BBC's Kay said on the Charlie Rose Show.

Now I am not going to pretend that "millions of voters" are exactly like me, but really. Katty Kay could go on the Charlie Rose Show every day and proclaim that Joe Biden is the anti-Christ and it certainly wouldn't make much difference to me.

But if Somerby wants to see it as another sign of the impending apocalypse, well, it's his blog.
