Mr. O is paid a lot per year!

TUESDAY, APRIL 4, 2017

In search of other large numbers:
Bill O'Reilly has been an expensive date for the suits at Fox. In response to all the false accusations, they've shelled out "settlements totaling about $13 million," the New York Times has now said.

Another number surfaced today in a front-page Times report. We can't vouch for its perfect accuracy:
STEEL AND SCHMIDT (4/4/17): Despite Mr. O’Reilly’s history of settlements and the series of allegations against him, the company has extended his contract, which was set to expire this year, according to people familiar with the matter. Mr. O’Reilly makes about $18 million per year. When the company extended the contract, it knew of multiple settlements that had been reached with women who had complained about his behavior.
Mr. O is paid "about $18 million per year." Or so Steel and Schmidt said.

For ourselves, we'd like to know what everyone else gets paid. How much do Rachel and Lawrence and them haul in every year?

On a journalistic basis, are such salaries dangerous? Is it possible that big major stars will do bad things to hang onto jobs like that?

(File under "Brian Williams." Also, under "Chris Matthews." According to press reports, Matthews' salary went through the roof after he launched his attacks on Candidate Gore in service to Chairman Jack Welch. Name one liberal who ever said a word about any of this. We prefer to kick down, Over There.)

By the way, how big are those other salaries? Given our manifest love of transparency, why are we never told?

  1. Yes. the problem with O'Reilly is his income, not the fact that he's a serial sexual assaulter.
Or is Somerby suggesting a correlation between high incomes and felonious actions?

    1. Such a shame! Everyone knows that wealth is a measure of Godliness. It's not O'Reilly's fault that he turned to a life of crime. It was caused by mental stress caused by the possibility of a Hillary Presidency with resulting higher taxes on his income. He should claim that his behavior was caused by the stress of living in a world with a progressive income tax--call it the twinkie defense for plutocrats. A well-shopped jury would vote to acquit.

    2. Robert, I think you should go back to your Dick and Jane readers, concentrate, think carefully about what you just read. Then reread it thinking perhaps you made a mistake (because you probably are in the habit of doing that) and consider again. Eventually you will perhaps be able to comprehend more complicated essays and stories.

    3. The point, obviously, is that O"Reilly's outrageously high salary is being renewed in the face of massive misbehavior. No such personal misbehavior has been associated with Maddow or other high priced on camera talent. And not in the context of Fox News, where this behavior seems par for the course.

  2. I don't know if the accusations against O'Reilly are valid or not, but they do illustrate the wisdom of VP Pence choosing to not eat alone with a woman or attend an event where alcohol is being served unless his wife is present. Pence is avoiding temptation and avoiding false accusations.

Since Trump was legally installed by our Constitutional process, as MM states, this means we now formally live in the newly designated: The United Pussygrabbing States of America.

    4. Funny, I somehow wonder if David's ever so benevolent benefit of the doubt was granted Bill Clinton in respect to his accusers, including the three laughable ones Yes, I included mercenary fruitcake Jaunita Broaddrick, Beyond that, Fuck you David.

    5. There is no need to lie about Clinton when the truth is bad enough.

    6. He had consensual sex with an adult. It almost cost him the Presidency.

    7. Yes, Greg. I do extend the the same benefit of the doubt to Bill Clinton. I don't know whether or not Bill Clinton actually raped any of the woman who accused him of rape.

    8. Comrade DinC, the difference being that those supposed rape accusations against President Clinton were investigated by Special Prosecutor Kenneth Starr who found no credibility in their accusations, as documented right here on TDH, you fucking dishonest troll.

Billo, on the other hand has already settled multiple accusations paying millions to his victims.

The difference is, you don't have President Clinton on tape bragging about his sexual assaults and deviancy. And you don't have a recording of President Clinton sexually harassing a coworker, which lead to a $9000000 settlement of a sexual harassment lawsuit.

      ***********************
The fact that O’Reilly is an enormous misogynist is hardly some shocking discovery. In 2004 the Smoking Gun published the text of a sexual harassment complaint against O’Reilly filed by Andrea Mackris, who was then an associate producer at Fox News. Elements of that lawsuit, which was settled in 2004 for $9 million, became part of pop culture trivia, thanks largely to the recording of O’Reilly trying to entice Mackris into having phone sex by saying he would rub her down with a “falafel,” which was apparently the word his lust-addled mind latched onto when he was looking for “loofah.”

  3. Somerby says: "By the way, how big are those other salaries? Given our manifest love of transparency, why are we never told?"

Transparency applies to the salaries of government workers because they serve the public and are paid out of tax money. There is no right to know salaries of private citizens just because their jobs place them in the public eye. Even someone as vile as O'Reilly has the right to privacy. We don't pay his salary and we have no right to know what it is.

Anyone in a service job does something to benefit other people. This is a service economy and roughly 70% of us are involved in some service occupation. That doesn't make us all public servants with an obligation toward transparency.

    1. It's not an outrageous point Bob makes. In this context, it IS outrageous and morally revolting. Bob should not get a pass.

  5. Once upon a time Bob was slated to appear on "The Factor." This was back in Clinton times. He was bounced and I don't think he ever got on. Maybe he was paid anyway. Some people's head's are turned remarkably easily.
The moral rot that has engulfed the Daily Howler reaches critical mass here. Sure, the high pay for people in front of and behind the cameras, in the print media too, is part of the problem we have been grappling with for decades. O"Reilly's obscene payout is just an extreme example of said.
Yet for Bob to try and change the subject really illustrates just how far he has gone. How the "we don't have to look at the real wrongdoers because everybody knows they are corrupt" becomes an enabling device, in this case of a quite pure evil.
O"Reilly's at work misbehavior has been an open non secret for years, his ugly divorce supports the view of him as a deeply unsavory character. Still Bob will go to amazing lengths to excuse and defend him, maybe because he almost got a spot on the show once? Whatever. The Daily Howler is rolling around in the slime.

    1. What in the world are you talking about? Bob brought up O'Reilly's apparently published salary here in order to question those of the MSNBC folks.

Why does talk of sex and scandal absolutely addle people's minds these days? I do get a kick though out of all of the angst and self-righteousness that arises over charges of sexual misconduct and harassment. Especially coming from fellow males!

On the most part it is SO hypocritical -- such as when it comes from the ole' Playboy Mansion visitor Bill Maher. It's like the new Puritanism, only a lot more vicious.

  8. Hey guys my wife and I have been married for 15 years. For over five years I have been dealing with jealousy issues because of flirting and her having emotional type affairs with other men. I felt like my masculinity was in question and if I said the way she was acting bothered me, it seemed to make matters worse or I was accused of being controling. During this period I did state I wanted a divorce if the behavior was not going to end: texting men a night, leaving for the weekend without letting me know where she was going or not responding to messages. We do have a son and basically it's been him and I for the last year on the weekends. She disconnected completely from being a good wife and mother. In April she said she wanted a separation and I said no we need to get into marriage counseling. We did try that, but she was not very responsive and didn't give any effort. Afterward she was adamant about separation and divorce. I continued to say no and that we needed to save our family. She presented a separation agreement and I had to hire a lawyer. Because of the above behavior my lawyer suggested a private investigator. The investigator discovered my wife was having an affair with a close friend of the family who also is married with children. We know the extended families. I feel like I should tell this man's wife about what happened. This adultery has devastated me emotionally, I feel betrayed and I'm physically drained. I know my wife is passionate in terms of her sexuality, and I can't get the thought of them out of my head. It makes me question my own manhood, and I feel very inferior or that he must be a better lover or what ever. The problem is my wife pursued him. She would go to him and she lured him into this adultery. I felt this was coming for some time and could not stop it. She was not only lying to me but also to our son about what she was doing and where she was going. My family is important, my son loves her and as crazy as it sounds so do I. Can you respond with a course of action on how to proceed? I was still have a very huge place in my heart for her. so i searched for help online and I came across a website that suggested that Dr Ahmed can help solve marital problems, restore broken relationships and so on. So I felt I should give him a try. I contacted him and he told me what to do and i did it then he did a spell for me. 28 hours later, my wife came to me and apologized for the wrongs she did and promise never to do it again. Ever since then, everything has returned back to normal. I, my son and my wife are living together happily again.. All thanks to Dr Ahmed. as it is a place to resolve marriage/relationship issues, do you want to be sure if your spouse is being faithful to you or Do you want your Ex to come back to you Contact.: E-mail: Ahmedutimate@gmail.com or call/Whats-app: +2348160153829 save your crumbling home and change of grades its 100% safe.
