THE PAROCHIALS: The case of Roy Moore's troubling marriage!

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2017

Part 1—Our own Dimmesdale disapproves:
On Friday evening, November 17, Lawrence O'Donnell got a snootful and began revealing himself as perhaps a bit of a Dmmesdale—and, perhaps, as one of our legion of pseudo-liberal parochials.

In a well-known book you read in high school, Dimmesdale thundered against Hester Prynne. Lawrence now thundered against the conduct of Roy Moore.

There's a great deal to criticize in the realm of Roy Moore's public conduct. Routinely, Moore's public conduct has proven too extreme even for Alabama conservative elites, as well as for substantial numbers of Alabama Republican voters.

Beyond that, several women have made very serious accusations against Moore, accusing him of serious sexual misconduct in 1979. But these matters weren't enough for our own Dimmesdale this night.

On this night, our Dimmesdale decided to voice his disapproval of Moore's 32-year marriage.

People like Lawrence will always engage in this sort of behavior. Despite their powerful moral intentions, they've stained the history of our highly sub-rational species down through the annals of time.

Our Dimmesdale got a good snootful this night. After that, he rose in the pulpit, offering this astounding complaint at the start of a segment:
O`DONNELL (11/17/17): When Roy Moore was a 32-year-old assistant district attorney, he was reportedly constantly trying to date teenage girls who were at least 14 years younger than he was, and one who was only 14 years old.

And when he was 38 years old, Roy Moore actually succeeded in marrying a woman who was 14 years younger.
As he opened his segment that night. Lawrence didn't mention the fact that Moore stood accused of assaulting two teenage girls. He seemed to be more upset by the fact that Moore had dated teenage girls—and that he'd even married someone fourteen years younger! Without first asking Lawrence!

At any rate, when Moore was 38 years old, he married someone who was 24! Our own Dimmesdale, astride the pulpit, seemed upset by this fact.

On Monday night, November 20, the Dimmesdale's attack continued. With the help of several smarmy guests, the smarmy fellow launched several attacks against Moore's troubling marriage.

As Moore tells the story, you see, he first set eyes on his wife at a junior college dance recital when she was 16 years old. Eight years later, he actually met her at a party. By now, she was a divorced, 24-year-old woman with one child.

He met her that night, and he married her; they've been married for 32 years. But on this particular Monday night, Lawrence delivered a lot of smarmy remarks about that troubling initial encounter.

As the Dimmesdales always are, Lawrence was deeply troubled. "He seems so comfortable with the idea that he met her so many years before, when she was 15 or 16 years old and in high school, at a dance recital," our own Dimmesdale complained. The smarmy remarks by Lawrence proceeded along from there.

In fairness, Lawrence had a lot of help that Monday night from several smarmy guests. That said, he seemed to be troubled by the fact that Moore is fourteen years older than his wife, to whom he's been married for 32 years.

This was smarmy enough by itself. But then, on Wednesday night, November 22, Lawrence staged a moving tribute to one of his tribe's greatest figures.

In his closing segment that night, Lawrence recalled the greatness of President Kennedy, known to his tribe as Dear Jack. He recalled the way the nuns helped himself, and the rest of the boys, deal with President Kennedy's murder in Dallas.

Do you mind if we quickly explain the way the minds of the Dimmesdales work? Let's start with Jack Kennedy's marriage.

When Jack Kennedy married Jackie, he was 36 years old. She was 24.

To a fellow like Lawrence, that 12-year difference is Camelot. The Moores' age difference—fourteen years—is a serious warning sign.

Might we mention something else? Moore stands credibly accused of molesting a 14-year-old girl, and of violently attacking a second girl who was 16. (Warning: "Credible" doesn't mean "true.")

To Lawrence, this is, by law, extremely bad. On his program that Thanksgiving week, one guest even attacked Moore as a "bigoted child molester." Several of Lawrence's guests saw no need to say "accused!"

Moore stands credibly accused of serious misconduct. But might we mention something else? Jack Kennedy stands credibly accused of a sexual assault on a sexually inexperienced 19-year-old intern right there in the White House.

Dear Jack was 45. Mimi Alford was 19.

A few years ago, she told the story of that attack—essentially, of a repulsive procurement and rape—in a very well-written book. When Mimi Alford's book appeared, no one really seemed to doubt that her story was true. She received the inevitable sneering review in the New York Times.

(For People's report, click here.)

Lawrence is upset by what Moore is alleged to have done. Allegations against Dear Jack don't exist on his morally uplifting program.

In a somewhat similar vein, Lawrence is troubled by 14 years, perhaps enraptured by twelve.

This is the way the Dimmesdales work—the way they've always behaved. This helps explain why so many Alabamians will line up to vote for Moore next week.

Lawrence struck us as a Dimmesdale on those programs, a smarmy Dimmesdale at that. That said, we'd say that he's a parochial too. But what do we mean by that?

Tomorrow: "The best love story, ever"

It's 2017. This is how politics works now.
Haven't you been hearing about how ObamaCare was "shoved down our throats" without any input from Republicans, (if you don't count the 79 hearings held in Congress about it)?

  2. Bob nails them again. Why does this MSNBC crowd make it so easy to do? Bob's right too about how much this unfair behavior can antagonize people on the outside.

Rachel's partner was also first known to her at about the same age and age differential-- 24 and late 30s. But to her credit, Maddow has been the least sanctimonious up there about Moore.

And to keep it real, Moore is not a "child molester" or a "pedophile." Joy "I was just trying to joke around with the gay-bashing imagery" Reid needs to be reminded of this constantly.

O'Donnell is so righteous about Moore and these sex complaints in general that he must have something to hide. He's just way over the top about it all.

Nonsense. The idea that someone would vote for Roy Moore because of MSNBC, and not because he's a religious wackaddodle, who wants to keep women and people of color in their place, is ridiculous.
MSNBC, like all corporate-owned right-wing media, is atrocious, but let's not make believe Moore voters aren't motivated by his bigotry.

    3. The Moore story would be working better if his critics weren't so feverishly dishonest about it.

At first it did, and then the pile on (and lack of continuing claims) backfired. People down there almost have sympathy for the guy.

Falsely calling him a child molester only antagonizes those voters who might be on the fence about his past. It veers them away from the accusers, not in their favor.

Come back to the light, Anonymous 1;47 PM. There is absolutely nothing dishonest about calling Roy Moore a religious wackadoodle, who promotes bigotry, and shouldn't be anywhere near the levers of governmental power. You would think that would be enough for "the good people of Alabama."

  3. "This helps explain why so many Alabamians will line up to vote for Moore next week."

Will Lawrence O'Donnell's hypocritical (because he likes JFK) disapproval push some wavering Alabama voters into the "yes" column for Moore? It's possible. Though that's a stupid reason to vote for someone. It's also doubtful that many of those voters actually watch Lawrence.

Would Alabama voters vote differently if Lawrence had spent 30 minutes trashing JFK and 30 minutes on Moore? Or if Lawrence had spent zero minutes on either? Hey, at least he's an equal-opportunity basher: remember all the Clinton/Gore trashing he did? Maybe some R voters will remember that fondly and go with Lawrence on this one.

As a corollary: Were Democrats pushed to vote for Hillary because of Hannity's program? It seems unlikely, but anything is possible.
It's also possible that Fox propaganda drives Fox viewers away from Democrats.

The ultimate decision of who to vote for rests in the hands (and the minds) of voters. A democracy relies on well-informed citizens. A better media? Sure, would be wonderful. But we have the one we have right now, and all of us have to navigate through its noise.

Finally, I have to say this blog is singularly unrewarding for those who try to read it daily. Somerby tends to beat an issue to death. Is this the 10000th post about Moore? I think Somerby's point has been made, but here he is, as if in some Groundhog Day scenario, waking up to be outraged anew by the same story.
How is insanity sometimes defined? "Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result."

    2. Somerby himself never discusses anything about Moore except the sex stuff. Meanwhile, how do you think I or anyone else know anything about Moore? His religious bigotry, his judicial malfeasance, his views on women and gays? Because it's been discussed in the media. If you read only Somerby's blog, you would never know anything else about Moore except the sex allegations. Somerby could maybe talk about that one out of a hundred posts.

      Delete
    3. And do you honestly think that if Lawrence chose to rant nightly about how bad Moore's religious bigotry is, or how reprehensible his views on gays and women, that the Alabama voters would be any more appreciative of that? Of course not...they would still cry foul, "media bias" etc. and proudly cast their vote against the liberal media. And Somerby would probably condemn Lawrence for THAT anyway, since it would be disrespecting the "Others" religious beliefs or what have you. It's damned if you do and damned if you don't with Somerby.

    4. And the media didn't "make up" Leigh Corfman's story or Beverly Nelson's now did they?

      Delete
    5. Somerby's been buying into Right-wing tropes, like right-wingers vote for Republicans because some liberal somewhere said something bad about them, when it's obvious they vote AGAINST Democrats because Democrats respect women and people of color.

    6. Interesting thread. Several good points 12:33 and others.

Made me think of some possible voting blocs in Alabama:

Will vote for Moore no matter what by reflex and/or because they strongly believe in conservative values. Without value judging this group, it is anger against liberalism in this group that we mostly see. Yet no matter how much these folks are offended by WaPo and MSNBC or Obama or Hillary, they don’t get an extra vote. They may push the button more robustly, but their gusto does not change the vote totals. This is by far the biggest bloc and by itself large enough to sway most Alabama elections.

Will vote for Jones no matter what by habit and/or because they believe in progressive values. No matter how offended these folks are by the allegations against Jones or by Trump or Fox News they don’t get an extra vote either.

Will change their vote from Jones to Moore because they are offended by the behavior of liberal talking heads. This is a micro group who seem silly in their fickleness and not as big a factor as many here (overall, not on this thread) claim.

Will change their vote from Moore to Jones because they believe the allegations. This grouping is significant and will make the election closer but, as Bob might say: whether it is enough for Jones to win, we have no way of knowing (until the votes are in).

Will change their vote from Moore to Jones because they perceive that the republican tax package will hurt them and they may feel betrayed by Trump who promised to take care of them.

Will change their vote from Moore to Jones because they don’t like Moore’s other baggage. Bob is right that too much time has been spent concentrating on and exaggerating the allegations rather than on Moore’s long public record.

Were not going to vote but are inspired to go to the polls and vote for Moore because of any of the above reasons favoring Moore or their overall disdain for liberalism, accentuated by recent media attacks on Moore and Trump, etc. They feel under siege partly because of what they see on TV or social media. Don’t underestimate the effect of social media news and fake news. This group is probably the most appropriate to the current discussion and it might be significant in swaying the election.

Were not going to vote but are inspired to go to the polls and vote for Jones because of any of the above-mentioned reasons favoring Jones, especially the allegations or because their perception Trump is dangerous.

I of course agree with you 12:33 that Bob has made his point incessantly and should move on, perhaps addressing:

What would be the effect if the MSM and liberal media began acting much more aggressively, ala Breitbart, but in support of liberal candidates?

What would be the effect if the MSM and liberal media became significantly more honest and balanced, even acting with pristine integrity and dignity as demanded by Bob? Would liberals win more or fewer elections?

  4. Roy Moore is denying he knew ANY of the women from the original Post story. Yet one of them, Debbie Wesson Gibson (who by the way is not alleging any misconduct), has proof that he did know her. Is Moore ashamed about his past behavior, such that he would call Ms Gibson and the others liars?

No surprise. And, I think, big deal. His relationships too were hardly relationships.

Most people in Alabama feel the same way, male and female. And so the more people carry on about it in outrage up North, the more silly (and hypocritical) the voters down there think they come off.

Instead, the MSNBC crowd likes to call these voters "crazy" and "evil." And then wonders why they won't vote for Dems (!)

It has always been thus. It seems an almost biological imperative. Will their ever be parity between the sexes?

Not as long as it's a man's world. But we should really keep trying, though the veneer of Homo sapiens' civilization is indeed thin. Especially in view of the fact that human civilization is in serious danger of collapsing.
