BREAKING: Did Carter Page meet with the Igors?

WEDNESDAY, JULY 25, 2018

Top blogger says he knows:
Did Carter Page actually meet with the Igors? Did he meet with Igor Sechin, president of a Russian energy company and a close associate of Putin? Did he meet with Igor Divyekin, an even more menacing figure?

In his famous dossier, Christopher Steele alleged that Page met with each of the Igors during his trip to Moscow in July 2016. This claim was prominent in the FISA application which was released last week—the application which led to surveillance of Page starting in the fall of 2016.

Did Page meet with these two fellows? Page was denied the claim up and down, including in a letter last fall to the FBI itself. He even denied the claim last Sunday, to Jake Tapper, right on TV!

Did Page actually meet with the Igors? For ourselves, we have no way of knowing. A top blogger feels that he does.

In his review of the FISA application, this blogger quotes a part of the FISA application which makes this allegation. For reasons which he doesn't explain, he seems to regards that allegation as an established fact:
BLOGGER (7/24/18): This is key information. Page denied the meetings with Sechin and Divyekin, but Steele confirmed them. Quite possibly there’s other confirmation in the redacted portions of the FISA application. The fact that Page lied about this is central to the FBI’s desire to surveil him further.
Is our chronology clear in this matter? As we understand it, Steele didn't confirm the allegations; he's the one who made them. Were those allegations correct? At this point, we don't know.

How does the blogger know that Page's denials have been a "lie?" The blogger doesn't say. Near the end of his review, he refers again to Page's "lie about his meetings with Sechin and Divyekin," once again without explaining how he knows the denial to the FBI was false.

We don't know if Page's denial was false. For what it's worth, the last time the New York Times had referred to the two Igors by name, Jason Zengerle had offered this assessment:
ZENGERLE (2/6/18): [M]aking Page into a conservative martyr will probably test Fox’s considerable powers of propaganda. For one thing, there are Page’s views on Russia and Vladimir Putin, which are more sympathetic and outside the American foreign-policy mainstream than even Trump’s. Page has absolved Putin of responsibility for the Ukraine conflict, blaming instead the United States’ “smack-down” approach toward Russia, and has echoed Putin in criticizing the United States and other Western countries for “their often hypocritical focus on ideas such as democratization, inequality, corruption and regime change.”

There are also Page’s murky relationships with Russian business and political leaders. Although Page has repeatedly (and believably) denied the allegations made in the Steele dossier that during a July 2016 trip to Moscow he met with Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who is now chief executive of the Russian oil conglomerate Rosneft, and Igor Diveykin, a top Russian intelligence official, he has been squirrelly and inconsistent about his relationships and interactions with a range of other Russians—including the deputy prime minister, Arkady Dvorkovich, and two Russian spies who tried to recruit Page in 2013. While the Nunes memo argues that the Steele dossier was used to improperly secure a warrant to wiretap Page, House Democrats maintain that there was far more evidence against Page in the warrant application.
According to Zengerle, Page has "believably denied the allegations" concerning Sechin and Diveykin. How did Zengerle reach that conclusion?

We have no idea. Given the way our journalism works, attention is focused on the latest shiny object, like last night's thrilling inaudible audiotape. Little effort is made to sort out such basic matters as this.

Now for a confession. We don't have the slightest idea whether Page met with Sechin and/or Diveykin! One top blogger feels he does, but seems to feel no giant need to explain.

For ourselves, we prefer to stand with fundamental fairness and the suspension of judgment. We'll add this basic point:

There was a time when kneejerk liberals were strongly disinclined to believe claims by the FBI and the CIA. Today, in the current climate, we tend to be strongly inclined to affirm the claims they've made.

In some ways, this is odd. James Comey's grotesque behavior in 2016 ought to remind us that godlike officials of these agencies can exercise terrible judgment, just like everyone else. Andrew McCabe may not have showered himself with glory along the way either, though we're less clear on his case.

We don't know if Carter Page met with those two Russkies. We do know that intelligence agencies can get out over their skis.

Did Carter Page meet with one or both Igors? Oddly, we can't say!

Additional point: Here and elsewhere, Zengerle's claims about Page and Dvorkovich make amazingly little sense. We may go over this familiar, bewildering matter again before the week is through.

  1. Somerby doesn't seem to know what the Steele dossier is. It is a report of an investigation by a well-regarded former MI-6 intelligence agent containing opposition research on Donald Trump. The investigation was originally commissioned by one of the Republican opponents of Trump in the primaries but abandoned when Trump got the nomination. It was later continued by the DNC with funding from Hillary Clinton's campaign, again seeking opposition research.

Steele investigated Trump and his campaign staff and found numerous Russian connections to the point that he felt it important to contact the FBI about it when it appeared that nothing would be done about his concerns by those he had already informed. The FBI had already heard similar info from other sources so the Steele dossier constituted corroboration.

How did Steele put together his dossier? He interviewed people and he tracked down evidence along his lines of investigation. He used the trade-craft that goes with being an intelligence agent, a person who gathers info.

So, when Somerby says: "As we understand it, Steele didn't confirm the allegations; he's the one who made them. Were those allegations correct? At this point, we don't know."

Somerby is flat out wrong. Steele wasn't making "allegations." He was providing evidence of contacts between various people and interpreting that evidence. He was presenting information. If he made any allegations, they were substantiated by the facts he had uncovered. The Steele dossier is not a series of accusations. It is a description of the behavior of people, with names, dates and places, sources.

So when Somerby says he doesn't know who to believe, he can believe someone with a strong self-interest in lying, someone who has already lied about verifiable things, someone accused of being a spy (and not just by Steele), or he can believe the MI-6 agent with a report documenting his claims about what Carter Page did and his concerns about what he was up to, fitting Page's behavior into a larger picture of actions by others on Trump's staff and Trump himself.

Several people here have asked what evidence there is of Somerby's support for Trump and conservative memes. This refusal to believe things until the very last nail is hammered into Trump's coffin is one of the things that makes us think he is a Trump supporter.

Somerby can accurately say that he doesn't know whether the sun will rise tomorrow morning -- not until he sees it happen. He can say he doesn't know for sure that there was a sunrise this morning, since he may have slept through it. He can refuse to believe anything not directly experienced. But in so doing, he gives aid (not aide) and comfort to Trump and his Russia-loving crew. He provides support for Trump's claim this past weekend that his supporters shouldn't believe anything they hear or see elsewhere, that only what Trump himself says is correct.

The FISA warrant doesn't rest solely on the Steele dossier. It is supported by other sources, some of which predated Steele's work. There are facts and evidence that kept that warrant in place through several renewals. That doesn't happen if there is nothing of concern. Somerby's willful refusal to draw the obvious conclusion seems like motivated support for some bad people. That's why Somerby should not be taken as just an excessively cautious philosophically minded media critic but needs to be seen for what he is, a Trump apologist.

    1. You're entitled to draw your own conclusions, but I don't find Bob out of line here at all, and I don't have any problem saying that I'm rooting for Mueller and against Trump. But ultimately, what's important are facts, and Bob has been consistent for about 20 years now that he wants to see journalists stick to the facts, which I think is probably a good idea.

In fact, you might even say that journalists' failure to do so has led us, in part, to the situation we're in, where Trump can claim "fake news" about anything he dislikes and a substantial portion of America believes him.

      Delete
    2. Bob doesn't call out reporters who write things like, "Republicans believe these tax cuts will lead to more investment in the economy and higher wages", which I saw multiple times in the media.
Bob should call them out on their mind-reading. These reporters have no idea what Republicans believe. If the media want to pass off nonsense Republican talking points (Hello Bob) to the public, they should just write, "Despite all historical evidence to the contrary, Republicans say the tax cuts..."
Instead, Bob allows the media to carry water for the Right-wing, while trying to convince people that corporate-owned MSNBC is 'liberal".
Like the media he supposedly criticizes, Bob is using distraction to keep our eyes off the ball.

      Delete
    3. Again, you're entitled to your opinion, but Bob has many times called-out the Republican talking-points BS. For whatever reason, he's decided over the past few years to focus on what he sees as the plank in the eye of the liberals. My guess is that he thinks the "pseudo-conservative" media is beyond repair, and he thinks that the best way to combat such propaganda is through meticulous reporting that sticks to the facts rather than propaganda from the opposite perspective.

    4. Keep trying. It's not working. The FISA warrant stinks to high heaven and is already irreversibly discredited.

      Delete
    5. Why is everybody so stupid?

If the FISA warrant really "stinks", poor poor innocent Carter Page would have already filed suit against the government for monetary damages. Ask yourself why isn't he.

      Delete
    6. OTOH, mm, if Carter Page is really a Russian spy, as the FBI claimed when they got approval to wire tap him, why haven't they prosecuted him? Why have they allowed him to run around loose?

      Delete
    7. mm -- what is your experience with lawsuits? I've been an expert witness in a couple. They're a big deal. Suing is a very major effort. I imagine it's even tougher when you're suing the government. Note that the government doesn't have to prove that they were right, but only that their behavior wasn't unreasonable. That's a tough hurdle.

      Delete
    8. Traitor David, my,my, I thought this was a slam dunk as all your treasonous party leaders sing as a chorus telling us that the FISA warrant was totally baseless. My my, I thought this was a politically inspired witch hunt initiated by the Obama administration to "spy" on Benedict Donald. My my, just imagine the tremendous stakes involved in Page proving in a court of law how unfairly he was "spied" on. It would blow up the Mueller investigation right then and there. On the other hand, Traitor David, maybe Nunes and Benedict Donald are totally full of shit.

      Delete
    9. mm - no lawsuit is a slam dunk. A lawsuit is like a war. The legal hurdles can be enormous and very costly.

Let's suppose the FBI went to the FISA judge with weak justification to wiretap Page. Let's say their justification was pretty much that discredited Trump dossier. Let's say the FBI didn't inform the FISA judges that this dossier was funded in part by the Hillary Clinton campaign.

If these things are correct (as they appear to be), was there definite negligence of bad faith? The FBI can argue that they had SOME basis for their actions.

Also, how large are the money damages? Unless Page was in line to win a huge settlement, the potential legal fees might not be large enough to motivate a lawyer to take this case.

For these reasons, I don't think you can conclude that the lack of a lawsuit means Page is guilty.

      Delete
    10. Go fuck yourself David.

If trump took a giant shit and put it in a plate and handed to you telling you it was filet mignon, would you add seasoning or just dig into it fresh from the traitor's ass?

    11. Traitor David, you ignorant bastard. I never once said Page was guilty of anything. I said the FISA warrant was completely justified by the evidence and the bullshit emanating from the WH Benedict Donald and the Capitol Devin "Midnight" Nunes and Gentleman Gym Jordan that the FISA warrant was a politically motivated spying of Trump campaign initiated by the Obama administration is completely unsupported by the fucking evidence.

You can't have it both ways fuckface. You're telling me the Trump presidency hanging in the balance isn't worth Page taking his case to the courts? That's what you're fucking telling me, you lying sack of shit?

      Delete
    12. David the treasonous bastard writes, "Let's say their justification was pretty much that discredited Trump dossier.

Why would you "say" that David, you lying sack of shit? Now that the FISA has been made public, we know for a fucking fact that isn't true. And when was the dossier fucking "discredited", David, you lying sack of shit? When precisely did that happen? You got anything to back that up, you lying sack of shit?

      Delete
    13. Would Carter Page lie, lie to the public, lie to the FBI? George Papadopoulos did, it is reasonable that Page did as well. His House Intelligence Committee testimony did not comport with his private email communications with the Trump campaign. In fact it was Page denying to the FBI (and lying about, according to the FBI) those meetings with Russians that prompted the FBI to further investigate him.

To date the Steele dossier has not been discredited. The Steele dossier was not the justification for the FISA, indeed it was less than half of the evidence supplied to the judges. The Republican judges were informed on how the Steele dossier was partially funded by people associated with the Clinton campaign.

By all accounts Carter Page is an idiot. This assessment was even reached by none other than the Russian spy that looked into recruiting Page. The Russian spy ultimately found Page to be an un-useful idiot, but eventually Page did turn over some documents.

Interestingly, the sanctions against Russia continue to not be fully implemented by Trump.

    15. The point is, this isn't about simply Carter Page. Much bigger than that.

Here is president Chickenshit reacting to the release of the FISA warrant.

"So we now find out that it was indeed the unverified and Fake Dirty Dossier, that was paid for by Crooked Hillary Clinton and the DNC, that was knowingly & falsely submitted to FISA and which was responsible for starting the totally conflicted and discredited Mueller Witch Hunt!" the president wrote in a tweet Monday morning.

The objective here is to discredit and delegitimize the entire Mueller investigation.

Hey, let's take a look at what Gentleman Gym Jordan is up to these days. Oh, gee, he introduced articles of impeachment against Rosenstein. yesterday.

Traitor David is just here to signal to President Chickenshit that all is well and he'll stick with the lying sack of shit degenerate racist bastard come hell or high water.

    16. The FISA warrant application says the dossier was funded by opponents of an unnamed candidate. The judges, who happened to be Republicans, found that the application, which included much besides the dossier, contained probable cause to surveil Page.

Why hasn't Page been prosecuted? Maybe the surveillance didn't produce sufficient evidence.

    17. The FISA application says that Steele was "looking for information that could be used to discredit Trump's campaign."

Why haven't the Russian sanctions been fully implemented? Maybe that was part of the deal that Page helped strike.

    3. I AM HERE TO TESTIFY ON HOW MY HERPES VIRUS WAS CURED BY DR LEWIS.

I'm Liubov Nikonets, from Texas USA. I had been in a relationship with a guy and we had unprotected sex for the first time and within a day i got a big bump on the crease of my thigh and vagina. after a few days it began to hurt more and more. I told him to take a picture of it for me, and it looked like open sores, like bugs were biting off my skin or something. So i went to the ER and they said genital herpes. I was soooo depressed. my boyfriend and i cried. he cried for me, but he had no idea he had it too. next day, same thing happens to him. at this point, we think i gave it to him because I was the first one to show the symptoms. The next phase I went through was depression. At this point, all I did was sleep and cry. I felt like my life was over. I knew I could never get married, I felt dirty, and worthless. I was depressed for about two months. I fought thoughts of suicide and it was a hassle to even carry out my daily tasks. So I started to wonder if there would be a remedy to this disease, which led me to going to visiting many hospitals, and nothing good came out from it, until I read a person’s testimony online that said that they were cured with the help of Dr LEWIS Spell, of this disease that the world deems incurable and tears rolled down my face. That persons testimony sparked a hope in me that led me to contact Dr LEWIS. So he assured us that we are going to be alright, after meeting up with the necessary requirements, he sent us a parcel and gave us instruction guide on how to use it, which we did, after 7 days of using the medication, the herpes was totally cured. So I and my boyfriend went and got tested for every STD in the book and every single test came back NEGATIVE, we also went back to the hospital, and it was confirmed NEGATIVE. I am posting my testimony to help someone out there suffering from this disease. Do not hesitate to contact Dr LEWIS via e-mail: Lewis7temple@gmail.com or WhatsApp him on +393511568477

  9. TDH says in reference to Carter Page meetings with Sechin and Divyekin, As we understand it, Steele didn't confirm the allegations; he's the one who made them.

Well, no, that isn't exactly accurate. Steele - a loyal, highly trusted and proven reliable former British Intelligence agent who headed the Russia desk at MI6 - wasn't making the allegations, he was reporting the alarming information which his proven sources inside Russia, some of whom risked their lives for us, the United States of America, were telling him. In fact one of his sources ended up dead.

I hope TDH has the integrity to correct his gross misrepresentation.
