What might a "cornered" Donald Trump do?

TUESDAY, JANUARY 22, 2019

Krugman's point of concern:
Next week, the new year will finally start at this award-winning site. The year will be built around an exploration of the famous old bromide now being called "Aristotle's error" in all the major salons.

Man [sic] is the rational animal? Ladies and gentlemen, please!

Before the year is done, we'll even explore Professor Horwich's essay about the philosophy establishment in some detail. And not only that! We'll offer instruction in a useful type of analysis which emerges from the jumbled, difficult work of the later Wittgenstein.

Also, Professor Harari will star.

Starting next week, we'll be providing these services as we all await Mister Trump's Inevitable Dispositive War. For today, we'll restrict ourselves to Paul Krugman's point of concern.

Krugman states an important point of concern in his new column; just last week, we stated the same basic point. Here's what Krugman says about the way "a cornered Trump" might behave in the face of impending defeat:
KRUGMAN (1/22/19): Most of Reagan’s political success reflected not fundamental economic achievement but good luck with the timing of the business cycle. And Trump almost certainly won’t experience comparable luck.

Combine this lack of a strong economic upside over the next two years with Trump’s extreme current unpopularity, and his chances for re-election—if he even makes it to the end of his first term—don’t look too good. Which raises the question of what he and his party will do if defeat is staring them in the face.

I don’t know the answer to that question, and if you aren’t scared about how a cornered Trump might lash out, you haven’t been paying attention.
What might "a cornered Trump" decide to do? A Trump who's facing re-election defeat? A Trump who's facing indictment?

Krugman says we should be scared. Major wars being easy to start, we said the same thing last week.

That said, Donald J. Trump is the danger our press corps has chosen. They chose this danger through thirty years of earth tones, emails, low IQs and the need to be dumbly amused.

With whom did Trump have consensual sex back in 2006? In the end, it's the only thing these rationals want to explore!

Full disclosure: We could have turned to Bandy Lee for advice about a cornered Trump. But major elites shut down the discussion she had been trying to start.

    5. No matter how old you are, family history is important. While you might not think so at the time, as you get older there will be things you and your grandchildren will want to know. Most of us don't realize it until the older generations are gone and you can't replace first hand comments. Don't just put in about the good times, add in the harder times and how you overcame those trials. Another thing to remember is what caused the deaths of those you loved. There are many things that have been found to continue into future generations that knowing it runs in the family can be helped with now or possible in the future. prevention starts with knowing where to start. I wish someone had taken the time to write these things down for mew to be able to go back to. My Grandmother and my mother told us many stories of what things happened in their lives and about the people in their lives. I now wish someone had written those things down since both have passed now. But I never thought at that busy point in my life that I would one day want to remember all those things. So much family history is lost when the older generations are gone. Please pass it on to your family while you can. You can even just do it digitally so it can be accessed by family later on.Family pictures are something to cherish also. Just be sure to write down who is pictured in them, where they are taken and when. I have found family pictures that no one now even knows who is in them.

  2. Maybe it's better to be lucky than smart.

President Reagan had two enormous accomplishments:

    1. Ending economic malaise and beginning a long-term economic boom.

    2. Winning the Cold War while avoiding a real war with the USSR.

But, Krugman says Reagan merely had "good luck".

So far, Trump has had "good luck" with the booming economy, "good luck" with record unemployment for blacks and Hispanics. "Good luck" caused a big drop in the murder rate. "Luckily" Trump avoided new wars and substantially defeated ISIS in Syria. He has been "lucky" that North Korea became less belligerent.

Were all these things really just luck?

SHANGHAI (AP) — The Chinese government has granted Ivanka Trump’s company preliminary approval for another five trademarks this month, as her father’s administration pushes ahead on trade negotiations with China.

Four trademarks, including child care centers, sunglasses and wedding dresses, were approved on Sunday. A fifth, covering brokerage, charitable fundraising and art valuation services, was approved on Jan.6, according to online trademark office records. The applications were filed in 2016 and 2017. If no one objects, they will be finalized after 90 days.

Ivanka Trump’s expanding intellectual property holdings have long raised ethical concerns, particularly in China, where the courts and bureaucracy tend to reflect the will of the ruling Communist Party.

  4. Somerby really shouldn't try to talk about human rationality without first reading at least some of the large body of research on how people think, reason, apply logic and make decisions. That is the purview of cognitive psychology. Somerby's chosen corpus is all non-empirical. Philosophers do not do experiments (other than "thought experiments") and Harari is not an empiricist either. Aristotle's original works were taken a lot further since the middle ages. We actually know a lot now about how people reason. We even know how apes reason. But Somerby doesn't know any of that because he has chosen not to read anything outside of philosophy, armchair cosmology and people like John Holt. It is time for him to grow as a pundit and familiarize himself with his subject before writing a shitload of crap in the new year.

I am embarrassed for him. Why would a grown man prefer to make an ass of himself day after day when he could read a book and actually discuss a topic?

Shouldn't it matter that Trump is still having consensual sex with the Russians and lying about it?

Who did Trump pay off in 2016 using campaign funds, to prevent another sex scandal right before the election? Shouldn't that matter to us and to the press? If corruption doesn't matter, is murder the only crime that would keep a candidate out of the presidency? How can Somerby set his standards so low that he only cares when journalists talk about earth tones and not when they ignore major crimes by a political candidate?

    ReplyDelete
  6. This is the umpteenth time Somerby has made this argument about Trump’s mental state. It doesn’t improve upon repetition.

Bandy Lee argues that Trump should perhaps be forcibly committed. The APA vehemently objected to her statements and her armchair “diagnosis.” (“We at the APA call for an end to psychiatrists providing professional opinions in the media about public figures whom they have not examined.”)

There has been a discussion of Lee’s book. I have commented before and provided a link to show that her book was discussed on O’Donnell’s show in 2017, a fact not mentioned or acknowledged by Somerby.

There has been discussion of this in the media, but not everyone shares the opinion about Trump’s mental state.

It is utter speculation. Sure, op-Ed writers could state their belief that Trump is dangerously, violently insane. But what would their *evidence* be? Somerby, the last time I checked, was kind of big on taking journalists to task for not providing evidence for their assertions.

  8. Two things:
    1. Somerby has lamented the loss of “gatekeepers” in the media business. Here, the APA are actual gatekeepers in the psychiatric profession, and they object to Bandy Lee’s remote diagnosis of Trump. Can’t Somerby see how irresponsible Lee’s behavior is, and how it would be equally irresponsible for journalists to make this kind of charge? Perhaps Lee should be stripped of her license.
    2. Many in the media do not believe that Trump is mentally ill. Somerby apparently believes it. But, since he is the one making the accusation, why is he demanding others defend his claim, when they themselves do not believe it? He is making the claim. He should defend it. He is acting like a petulant child. He needs to provide evidence to back up something he obviously believes. Lee’s book doesn’t count, because she frankly has no evidence herself. Just like with achievement gaps, Somerby needs to quit asking other people to have the conversation, and actually *have the fricking conversation.*

"Nobody knows the system better than I do." — April 2016

      9) Campaign contributions

      10) Politicians

"Nobody knows politicians better than Donald Trump." — February 2016 rally

      11) Sen. Cory Booker

If Cory Booker is the future of the Democratic Party, they have no future! I know more about Cory than he knows about himself.

      — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 26, 2016

(We're putting this on the list assuming that nobody ELSE knows more about Booker than Booker, which would make Trump the world's foremost non-Cory Booker expert on Cory Booker.)

      12) Trade

"Nobody knows more about trade than me." — March 2016

      13) Jobs

I hope all workers demand that their @Teamsters reps endorse Donald J. Trump. Nobody knows jobs like I do! Don’t let them sell you out!

      — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 8, 2016

      14) Infrastructure

      17) Defense — and offense

"So a general gets on, sent obviously by Obama, and he said, 'Mr. Trump doesn't understand. He knows nothing about defense.' I know more about offense and defense than they will ever understand, believe me. Believe me. Than they will ever understand. Than they will ever understand." — July 2016

    2. He's right about Cory Booker.

    3. I agree with this one:

"I understand social media. I understand the power of Twitter. I understand the power of Facebook maybe better than almost anybody, based on my results, right?" — November 2015

    4. mm - Trump's actions have been sane and very effective. As your examples show, he makes wildly exaggerated statements and outright lies. But, there's nothing insane about talking this way, because these exaggerations and lies have worked. It's perfectly sane to keep doing something that produces good results.

P.S. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is following Trump's approach, with wild exaggerations and outright lies. And, sadly, it's working for her, too. :(

    5. @mm
I get it. I despise Trump. But none of those things *prove* mental illness. A psychiatrist needs to have sessions with someone to make a viable diagnosis. You can’t judge from a person’s public persona what they are like in private. Trump could be executing a rational strategy. He has always acted like this to some extent. Do we judge that Jerry Lewis was a demented, goofy, klutz? No. In reality he was nothing like that.

My beef is with Somerby’s double standard. “You can’t call Trump a liar, but please call him mentally ill?” How does any of this fit with Somerby’s desire for fair, honest, well-founded objective media?

And it is dangerous to start bandying about charges of “mental illness.” Next thing you know, a bunch of conservative psychiatrists will remotely declare the next Democratic president insane. And then where would we be?

    6. 5:54,

Thanks, I understand. I think what we've learned these past few years is our Constitution is not equipped to handle this lunatic and his corrupt family of liars, beggars and thieves infesting the WH.

I also have trouble understanding Somerby sometimes.

    7. mm - I don't care much about Trump or his testicles. I care about the people. I am happy about the things I mention above: fewer murders, booming economy, more blacks and Hispanics employed, ISIS defeated in Syria, no new wars, etc. Aren't you happy about these things, mm?

    8. Relax David. The corporate-owned media isn't going to let Ocasio -Cortez bad-mouth and humble-rag the USA, as easily as they let Republicans do those things.

Can anyone spot the lie in this sentence?

    10. David, you are misguided or misguiding, all those things are the result of Obama's administration; not only has Trump done nothing to contribute to those issues, you can clearly see the trend lines for all those issues dating back 8 years.

    11. 12:04,

You're wasting your time with that one.

Literally mere months after the Inauguration of this abomination DinC was writing here about how much better the economy was doing. I kid you not. You can show him those trend graphs from now until eternity and he will never acknowledge it. His go to rationalization which is conveniently unfalsifiable is that all the great progress under the Obama was just nature taking it's course and that the economic recovery was due to expire that very January 2016 and only continued on the exact same trend line because of the election of Donald the Acting President.

    12. Dear dembot. Look at it this way:

Your Demigod Barry is responsible for the most sluggish recovery in history.

While Donald The Magnificent is responding for the best economy since 1960s (by the most modest assessment).

And that's all there is to it, dembot.

  9. Good God, Somerby is repetitious.

  10. BTW a striking thing about Krugman's column is that his criticism of Trump economy is hypothetical -- something he asserts will occur in the future. That's because Trump's economy is doing so well in the real present. In Krugman's view, either Trump is failing or he's about to fail.

    1. Hey dembot, I hear the Trump pharma plan might make it possible for you to, finally, get back on your tourette meds.

Could you comment on that, dembot? And more feeling, please.

  11. Stock market is 1,900 points lower than a year ago. Stocks rose fairly steadily since the 2009 stimulus bill - from 7,200 to 19,800 when Trump took the reins. (Although the next year's budget still belonged to Obama, as Obama's first year was still the disastrous Bush budget.) Also too, the millionaire and corporate tax cuts are cratering the deficit, with negligible money being spent on infrastructure with historically low interest rates. Do the maths.

    1. Whoa, it sounds like in addition to craving a global nuclear war, the dembots now programmed to proclaim that the stock market is the economy, and that the president controls the stock market.

Thank you, Mr Soros; quite a strong advance in zombieism right here.

    2. The stock market has nothing to do with the economy. Even a person who's paid to gaslight Liberals knows that.

    3. In general the stock market reflects the economy. I do not know how that can be debated. Look it up.

Horrible tax policy, slapping tariffs without thought, and extended government shut-downs over a wall (60% of folks without papers cross legally and overstay there visa) are presidential actions that will depress the economy and effect the stock markets as we are currently witnessing.

Also too, do deficits only matter when Soros is secretly running the White House?

    4. "I do not know how that can be debated"

      I'm not surprised.

The federal reserve has much more effect on the stock market than any president.

Lower interest rates -- which normally happen during periods of weak economy -- cause the stock market to rise.

And higher interest rates -- normally during periods of booming economy -- cause it to slow down or fall.

      So, now you know, dembot.

    5. Good to know you believe in Keynesian economics. So since the Fed rate was about 0.5 to 1% from 2008 to 2017, and has only been pumped up to 2.4% as of today, where is the Fed stimulus coming from for the next downturn? Nothing to give from the Fed, and already burned through tax cuts (stupidly aimed at the rich, not the middle purchasing class). We are truly in for a horrific dive with no stimulus available to pull out. I can not fathom how this is fiscal conservatism. Expect part of Putin's plan to disrupt the US, and the EU.

And also too, waiting for your opinion on those exploding deficits and no infrastructure improvements???

      Delete
    6. Also too, too, I wrote the stock market generally reflects the economy, I never said it impacts the economy. That the stock market generally reflects the economy truly can not be debated. Mr. Mao Straw Man, quit putting words in other peoples thoughts.
