EMANATIONS FROM THE EDGE: The hoarding of the world's vaccines!

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2020

The wretched will just have to wait: The most interesting thing we read this morning was Michelle Goldberg's new column.

Goldberg has small children; we don't. We've often wondered how hard it must be for parents of small kids at this extremely difficult time. Early on, Goldberg tells us:

GOLDBERG (12/21/20): If, before this year, I felt for a day the way I now feel all the time, I’d consider it an emergency and do anything I could to fix it. Now that I’m waiting out a pandemic in a small apartment with small kids and winter closing in, most things I’d need to do to be less miserable are proscribed, though sometimes by suggestion rather than decree.

If you're able to care about other people, that isn't a good thing to read. Later, Goldberg offers a surprising flashback concerning the pandemic's early days:

GOLDBERG: In April, when the pandemic was still new, I interviewed a community leader in a particularly hard-hit Brooklyn housing project who told me, frankly, that she and her friends weren’t social distancing because they needed each other too much, especially in apocalyptic times. “You don’t want to know that your friends and family are going to lock you out because there’s zombies outside,” she said.

I couldn’t help but sympathize. At the time my family, vastly more privileged, had moved in with friends at a remote country house, hoping to wait out a disaster we expected to end in a month.

We’re alone now, but I understand people who decide they can’t be, even if these decisions are collectively calamitous...

Really? In April, "privileged" people thought the pandemic disaster was going to end in a month? It makes no difference at this point, but we find that comment surprising.

Goldberg's column provides a glimpse of the personal pain involved in social isolation. For ourselves, we're inclined to dislike the use of the term "privileged" which is now widely found within Our Town's woke culture. It involves a type of self-flagellation which strikes us as hugely unhelpful and not very instructive.

That said, performative virtue is now the rage in the streets of our own failing town. This helps explain the problem described in this recent post by Kevin Drum.

"Democrats Have a Problem With the Working Class"—or so Drum's headline claims. He links to reports in both the Washington Post and the New York Times—reports which suggest that even the black and Hispanic working class has begun to drift in the direction of the GOP.

Dems did fine with the "college-educated" class in November's election. At the same time, a puzzling drift was observed in the non-college segment of the electorate, which is twice as large. Trump's lunacy may have saved the Dems this time, but this trend should be a point of concern.

Why has the black and Hispanic working class been drifting toward the GOP, even toward Donald J. Trump? Our Town's noxious performative virtue, mixed with our world-class generational dumbness, is surely one part of the problem.

In the next few days, we'll wander among some examples. But even as our own woke class announces its virtue to the world, what are we actually like, or a moral basis, as a giant nation?

What are we really like as world citizens? What are we like as a people? Consider this throw-away passage from an essay in the Outlook section of Sunday's Washington Post:

KHAN (12/20/20): Wealthy countries representing just 14 percent of the world’s population have used their resources and influence to capture 96 percent of Pfizer’s vaccine and 100 percent of Moderna’s, according to a report by Oxfam and other human rights organizations. These nations are even planning on stockpiling extra, just in case. And because of this, it’s estimated that billions of poorer people in less-advantaged nations will not receive the vaccine for years.

Say what? We're part of an international cabal which is hoarding the world's vaccine supply?  Assuming that statement is accurate, the wretched of the earth will just have to wait—we're getting our shots first!

Assuming that statement is accurate, we'll admit that we've seen no other discussion of this remarkable state of affairs. Assuming that statement is accurate, it says something about our moral standing as a people, even as the political class within Our Town performs its virtue far and wide, for everyone to admire.

The piece in the Post was written by Shamus Khan, a sociology professor who's on the move from Columbia down to Princeton. Khan refers to this hoarding of vaccine as "a profound moral failure," but he mentions it only in passing in his Outlook piece.

His real concern is the way elites in this country may crowd to the head of our nation's vaccine line, even as the wretched of the earth have to wait for us to access our safety first.

(For what it's worth, Khan's essay includes one of those "links to nowhere," in which a source to which he links fails to support the particular claim he's making about These Better-Off People Today. This is one of the ways our own elite academic / journalistic class exercises one of its own types of "privilege.")

Are we part of a worldwide cabal which is hoarding the planet's vaccines? If so, you aren't likely to read a whole lot about it. Nor are you likely to hear about it when you watch cable TV.

In Our Town, our tribunes are strongly inclined to reinforce a prevailing tribal notion, in which we in Our Town are demonstrably moral and pure. It's all about getting Rudy locked up. The wretched of the earth can just go hang in the yard.

The belief that we in Our Town are moral and pure is now played out on a daily basis in our favorite journals. We'd have to assume that this rancid, remarkably dumb behavior is moving the others toward the candidates found over there in Their Town.

In the next two days, we'll move on to examples. Elsewhere, some of the others can surely see that our tribal claims of spectacular virtue just ain't necessarily so.

Are we hoarding the world's vaccines in the clinics of  Our Town? If so, why aren't Our Town's multimillionaire cable stars telling us all about it?

Night after night after night after night, why is it all about locking up Rudy? Is it possibly part of our "privilege" that we aren't being told?

Tomorrow: A conversation remembered from high school. Two years later, a roommate from Montclair...

There's no such thing as "black" or "Hispanic" working class, dear Bob. There is working class.

And the working class is not "drifting toward the GOP". The working class is drifting towards anything anti-establishment; towards "lunacy", in your liberal-goebbelsian jargon.

Had The Commander been more determined and radical, no amount of your hitlerian cult's shenanigans would've stopped his re-election.

The mountain tourist community of Vail CO was inundated by people flying in to escape the virus. Unfortunately, they brought infection with them, causing a covid hot spot right in that isolated area. So this isn't just an East Coast phenomenon (or maybe those were East Coasters flying in to a favorite vacation spot).

If people had observed social distancing and mask wearing, we could have ended the pandemic in a month. It is the failure to self-isolate and contain the virus that has led to this ongoing misery. But people gotta be free and it is unthinkable that they should go for any amount of time without their friends around them.

  3. Somerby does something here that is highly revealing in service to his narrative. Usually, he is at pains to be skeptical of anything in the Washington Post or the NYT. Not this time.

The Post story fails to define its terms, most importantly “working class”, and doesn’t link to any actual data.

The Times story is more about Latino and Asian precincts.

One wonders if Somerby agrees with his friend Kevin Drum’s conclusion:

“this inevitably brings us around to the tedious—but important—question of whether liberals need to move toward the center on social issues.
Needless to say, the progressive wing of the party is massively resistant to this idea.”

One can ask “what are social issues?” Does that mean abortion, guns, gay marriage, etc? How does one move to the center on these issues? Does Drum think that Democrats can remain where they are or even move left on non-social issues, presumably economic ones? He doesn’t address that, nor does Somerby. I am doubtful.

Ultimately, voters are not going to vote for Democrats who are nothing more than Republicans.

The suspicion arises that the “pseudoliberal” Times and Post are creating the conditions whereby the reporting will continue to urge liberals to “move to the center”, and not just on social issues. Somerby never notices that.

Also, his claim that cable TV isn’t talking about the hoarding of vaccines is completely false.

  4. Woke culture didn't invent the word "privilege". Synonyms aren't any better. I think Somerby is rebelling against the idea that some people (such as himself) have better access to the good things in life than others do. It isn't the word, it is the inequality that it stands for that bothers Somerby. But he thinks you can level things by pretending there is no such thing as privilege, or that it is impolite to point out that inequality exists.

  5. "That said, performative virtue is now the rage in the streets of our own failing town."

We should all be rooting for performative virtue. It is the only kind that results in change.

My town isn't failing and I don't know why Somerby persists in living in his own failing town, without helping to improve it. Non-performative virtue sucks.

  6. Somerby says that the non-college segment of voters is twice as large as those with some college. That is incorrect:

"In 2015, the majority (88 percent) of adults were at least high school graduates and more than half (59 percent) had completed some college or more".

"In 2019, high school was the highest level of education completed by 28.1% of the population age 25 and older and 22.5% finished four years of college. From 2010 to 2019, the percentage of people age 25 and older with a bachelor's degree or higher jumped from 29.9% to 36.0%."

When college loans are forgiven, that will encourage more students to continue their education, which should be very bad news for Republicans.

What is Drum's purpose in portraying Democrats as a failing party? What is Somerby's?

    1. Very good point. The percentage of people with some higher education is steadily increasing, which means the GOP has more to worry about than the Dems.

  7. ‘we're inclined to dislike the use of the term "privileged" which is now widely found within Our Town's woke culture.’

The main thrust of Bernie Sanders’ campaign was to rail against the “millionaires and the billionaires” who weren’t paying their fair share, which is an implicit attack on their privilege. He deliberately spoke in terms of class warfare. Did Somerby object to that?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Sanders and his supporters problem is that they do not understand how to get their programs passed. The American people unfortunately decided to keep the Senate in Republican hands. The problem is with the electorate. Until you change that you won't change anything.

      Delete
    2. The Senate may change hands on Jan 5.

I think the problem is Sanders himself. His ideas might have greater appeal if they weren't associated with him. His casual acceptance of help from Russia, his unethical campaigning, his tolerance of sexism within his campaign and directed against Hillary, and his own attacks on the Democratic party while joining the party when convenient, his failure to rally behind Hillary when she became the nominee, and his bizarre past, his misuse of his Senate office to financially benefit his wife, his failure to adhere to his own principles, and so on, all undermine the economic message of his campaign. It would be easier to get such ideas across with a more palatable candidate.

      Delete
    3. Privilege is a diffuse term. Railing against millionaires and billionaires who don't pay their fare share is a bit more specific, and it is true on the facts. Wealthy people have carved out a special place for themselves that others can just bare discern through the clouds. It's amazing that we are not talking non-stop about what was revealed in the Panama papers.

  8. "Why has the black and Hispanic working class been drifting toward the GOP, even toward Donald J. Trump? "

Actually, the black and Hispanic working class has not been drifting toward the GOP or Trump. Trump won some Hispanics in Miami because of his harsh stance on Cuba (Obama had tried to normalize relations with Cuba, which is unpopular among the exile community in Miami). Trump also won Hispanics in Southern Texas along the border. They liked his harsh stance against immigrants. It is common for those who have lived in the US for several generations to dislike those trying to cross the border illegally or seeking asylum in the US. There is no mystery there. Neither of these groups constitute the Hispanic working class, since his appeal had nothing to do with working class issues.

Trump made a specific appeal to black voters in 2020. His support by figures such as Kanye West and his appointment of Ben Carson may have helped, but mainly the upswing was due to the drifting away from Biden compared to Obama's nearly unanimous support by black voters. There are black Republicans, but many voted along race lines for Obama but wouldn't do that for Biden. Again, there is no mystery there and it does not represent a liking for Trump.

I am very tired of these "Democrats in disarray" stories that appear in the NY Times regularly. Drum appears to understand that such stories exist, but why is he himself writing one, on such specious grounds? Minority groups are no more monolithic than the white majority in our country.

If Somerby and Drum want to be useful, they should figure out why anybody in their right mind would have voted for Trump. Somerby keeps telling us to talk to The Other to find out, but he himself has proposed no explanations other than liberals are stupid and use words like "privilege" which drives away the uneducated masses. That is no answer and this remains a mystery to me. How could anyone vote for someone as awful as Trump?

  9. "in which a source to which he links fails to support the particular claim he's making about These Better-Off People Today."

Whether a link does or does not support a statement is largely Somerby's opinion. He has now made this sort of criticism several times, but I find it hard that a writer would include a link that did not support his or her argument. Inclusion of a link is voluntary, so why would anyone include one if it didn't support what was written? Somerby wants us to believe that all of the authors he criticizes are being mendacious. I think it is more likely that he is dismisses their evidence, just as he dismisses their arguments, because he disagrees and is too lazy to provide counter-evidence. And that is dirty pool on Somerby's part.

  10. When Somerby objects to the term “privilege”, one assumes he objects to its use by “woke progressives” like Goldberg, presumably because he believes that “woke progressives” are insincere, that they don’t really care about inequality.

But for one thing, “woke progressives” is not equal to Michelle Goldberg. There are many “woke progressives” who are actively engaged in helping the underprivileged. Besides, Somerby has no idea what Goldberg does outside of her writing.

But this brings up another objection. In what sense is Goldberg’s commitment to reducing inequality disproven? Because she writes about it, instead of “doing anything”? Is that what Somerby means by “performative virtue?” Except that writing about it IS doing something. It shines a spotlight on it, and constitutes a call to action.

After all, isn’t writing “all” that Somerby is doing as well? Should we accuse him of performative virtue when he complains about liberals or seems to claim he is concerned about the plight of black kids by writing exclusively about “achievement gaps?”

    1. It is odd that Somerby writes primarily about the racial achievement gap and not the economic achievement gap between wealthy and poor children.

  11. This business of hoarding all goes back to Trump's failure to coordinate fighting the pandemic with global organizations.

Somerby is not complaining because Russia and China are not sharing their vaccines with us. The only people who have received vaccine at this point are medical staff and govt leaders, and I approve of those priorities. In LA, teachers and essential workers will be next, along with nursing home residents, then those over 75 and with underlying health conditions.

The wealthy nations developed the vaccine because they had the resources to do so. It would be better if there were some systematic plan aimed at eradicating the virus, not at protecting certain groups of people, but that is beyond the capabilities of Trump's government and that is our misfortune. With coordination, it might make more sense to aim the vaccine at the spots where the virus is so out of control that coping efforts are failing. That would require patience and I don't see people like Somerby exhibiting that kind of reaction -- he is already complaining about where the vaccine is going.

The word "capture" is spin. It makes it sound like a limited amount of vaccine just happened to be sitting out there, ready to exploit.

An more accurate description would be, "Wealthy Western nations got to use vaccines which they had researched, created, tested, produced and distributed."

Poor nations will also get to use vaccines. They should be grateful to the wealthy western nations.

Meh. Pfizer isn't a wealthy Western nation. It's a multinational corporation.

According to wikipedia: "Pfizer's CEO stated the companies in the private sector producing a vaccine should make a profit."

So, for as long as there is scarcity, they'll sell to the highest bidder, be it a state or individual.
