FRIDAY: Man is the rational animal, he said!

 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2025

He'd never looked in on The Five: "Man [sic] is the rational animal," Aristotle is widely said to have said.

That's what he is said to have said. He'd never looked in on The Five!

For tomorrow, we'd planned to discuss a twice-told talethe story Robert Reford told two times, first in Ordinary People (1980), then again, in dreamscape fashion, in The Horse Whisperer (1998).

On occasion, a fellow dreams of writing about something decent, even about something humane.

Then, that fellow may look in on The Five. It's the conundrum we've chosen!

  1. Aristotle used the word “anthropos” which means human, and can be a woman or a man.

    1. Somerby's use of [sic] is ironic. He would never be caught dead extending respect to women.

    2. He’s a sic anthropos.

  2. Somerby makes a good point, albeit accidentally. Good decent people don't watch The Five, especially when it occurs during their own lifespan. People get conned by Fox because they have lost their ability to tell right from wrong, good from evil, humane from inhumane. Decent people are repulsed by what happens on Fox and don't continue watching it, even as a social experiment.

The conundrum is why Somerby watches Fox garbage when he presumably should know better, if he is actually liberal as he claims.

    1. He watches it so we don’t have to.

    2. I follow several bloggers and Twitter users who report on fox and other right wing sites. It’s useful to be aware of what is being said over there and the level of vitriol and propaganda. Most liberals that I know aren’t aware of the depravity over there, because they don’t follow social media like I do. Perhaps there’s something useful to Somerby’s blogging about this. I don’t know if it makes sense to demand that “blue media” report on it though. We may get this stuff mainstreamed via some sort of replacement to kimmel. It’s all very depressing.

    3. Somerby's point is that MSM is pathologically timid about addressing the propagandist lies committed by Fox on a very regular basis. That suggesting the murder of homeless people was not followed by sanctions at the network is bald faced evidence of their depravity.

    4. My point is that corporations aren't going to leave the country if we raise corporate tax rates by 20%.
The worst thing that wil happen is that they will whine about it, threaten to leave the country, and pay the additional 20% tax rate.

  3. The View and The Five deserve each other. If Bob were discussing "The View," he could have left out the "sic".

    2. Silly DiC spends all his time on nonsense like this when Trump has destroyed South Korean relations and they are halting billions in investments. All over self hating Jew Miller getting his ICE quota, shakling Korean execs and start up techs working to get a giant battery factory going in Alabama going before leaving. Have been on these foreign start up teams a few times in my career. Korea is pissed, and who would do business with these asshole American leaders? Trump is now leading a shithole country. Thanks DiC.

  4. Paul Pelosi's attacker, David DePape, is an illegal alien who voted illegally for socialist candidates, his life partner is an LGBTQ Russian immigrant named Oxane “Gypsy” Taub, and his home featured BLM and LGBTQ signs and flags. David was NOT a product of the right

    3. That makes it OK for Kirk, Fox, and the President to make light of his head being hammered? What in God's name is wrong with you? How is that a winning argument ( aside from the lies). Get help.

    4. DePape is nuts. He was far left, then he became far right and attacked Mr Pelosi. He never voted in the US.

    5. "DePape, a Canadian immigrant to the United States, had a history of mental health issues and drug abuse. Before the attack, he had embraced various far-right conspiracy theories, including QAnon, Pizzagate, and Donald Trump's false claims of a stolen election in 2020. Online, he made conspiratorial, racist, sexist, and antisemitic posts, and pushed COVID-19 vaccine misinformation. His blog also contained delusional thoughts[7][8]. At his subsequent trial, DePape testified that he was motivated by conspiracy theories and had hatched a "grand plan" to target Speaker Pelosi and others"

    1. Suppose you believed you'd been born in the 'wrong' body, that you had some kind of eternal sexual soul inside you. But trapped! In the wrong body!

How might anger take possession of you, as you contemplated the cruelty of your fate.

And how would you feel against those who refused to even acknowledge your awful, but undeserved plight.

It's a wonder there's not more transgender murderers.

    2. It’s nothing about an eternal soul. Their brain develops in a way typical for one gender, and the rest of their body develops in a way typical of another gender.

    3. Transgender people are a tiny percentage of the population and they have committed a tiny percentage of murders.

    4. Definitely beyond coincidence:

As Israel continues its operation to fully occupy Gaza City, displaced Palestinians in the Israeli-designated "humanitarian zone" in southern Gaza say conditions are worsening as the areas fills up with ever more people.

Reports say that two children were killed, and others were injured reportedly in two Israeli strikes on tents in the zone, raising further questions about safety.

    5. DiC cranking side shows while these folks empty the treasury. What a dupe.

"The Securities and Exchange Commission this week dropped civil enforcement cases that could have led to penalties totaling hundreds of millions of dollars against three men who were previously granted clemency by President Trump.

The cases had been brought before Mr. Trump took office this year. Each involved people who later allied themselves with him as they pursued pardons for white-collar frauds that, according to juries in criminal cases, cheated victims out of huge sums.

Devon Archer, who was convicted in connection with a scheme targeting pension funds and a Native American tribal entity, was ordered to pay nearly $60 million in forfeiture and restitution.
Trevor Milton was found guilty of lying about the supposed technical achievements of his electric truck maker Nikola. Prosecutors recommended that he pay more than $660 million back to shareholders.
Carlos Watson, who was convicted of defrauding investors in his digital media company Ozy Media, was assessed penalties of nearly $97 million.
All were spared from serving prison time and paying the overwhelming majority of their criminal restitution obligations when Mr. Trump granted pardons to Mr. Archer and Mr. Milton and commutations to Mr. Watson and Ozy.

And now, the S.E.C. action means that they will not have to pay any additional civil penalties to the government (though the dismissals leave open the possibility of private civil lawsuits from victims). Nor will they face restrictions that the commission had sought on their ability to work in securities-related positions.

The dismissals of the civil cases further underscore how Mr. Trump has used the levers of power to help affluent allies who have found themselves crosswise with the federal government he now leads."

  8. From Digby:

Young Black voters are abandoning the Democratic establishment, find it wanting:

A long list of New York’s Black pastors and politicians endorsed former governor Andrew M. Cuomo in the run-up to the city’s Democratic primary for mayor last month. But it wasn’t surprising that freelance journalist Anthony Conwright and many other younger Black New Yorkers ignored those endorsements and chose state Assembly member Zohran Mamdani instead. Conwright backed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) during the 2016 and 2020 Democratic primaries and voted for Kamala Harris in last year’s general election but found her campaign wanting.

Mamdani “made the case that his policies are a moral imperative,” Conwright, 39, told me.

It has been well-chronicled that more African Americans, particularly younger ones, are voting Republican than in the past. But there are growing signs of another crucial shift — the younger African Americans who remain Democrats are dissatisfied with the party’s center-left establishment and increasingly open to progressive candidates and stances. The days of center-left Democrats such as Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden winning primaries by overwhelmingly carrying the Black vote might be over.

Yes, get their FCC licenses, Mr. President. Definitely. Cancel their fucking broadcasting licenses, and let them run their Kimmels, their Colbers, and all the rest of their idiot-freaks, on youtube fucking channels.

    Do it now Sir. Please.
