Kimmel got suspended: Does Jimmy Kimmel read Heather Cox Richardson's very popular, extremely Blue Substack?

We'll tell you why we ask:

On Monday night, Kimmel made a somewhat peculiar statement as part of his opening monologue. The comment produced a lot of pushback, leading to the suspension of his late night show.

This morning, reading the New York Times, we finally found someone who heard that comment the same way we did. That person was David French. This is what he said:

The Dangers of the Charlie Kirk Aftermath

[...]

The onslaught against dissenting speech never stops. Brendan Carr, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, was interviewed on the right-wing influencer Benny Johnson’s podcast and appeared to threaten fines or revoke broadcast licenses over what he called “news distortion” and specifically mentioned—of all people—Jimmy Kimmel. Hours after Carr’s statements, ABC pulled Kimmel’s show “indefinitely.”

Kimmel had gotten something wrong on his late-night TV show. In his monologue, he said, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

The best available evidence indicates that the shooter was not MAGA at all. But a late-night comic’s mistakes are not a cause for the federal government to bully a network into canceling his show. (Plus, as the attack on Kimmel demonstrates, the second part of Kimmel’s statement was correct.)

Set aside what Carr and ABC did. That's not our topic for today. Let's focus instead on what Kimmel said.

French heard his remark the same way we did. Last night, watching Anderson Cooper, we were surprised to see a lockstep inability to imagine that there could be any imaginable problem with the accuracy of what Kimmel had said.

Everyone thought the remark made perfect sense. No one saw any imaginable problem.

We thought Kimmel's comment conveyed a fairly clear impression that Tyler Richardson was a MAGA man.  French interpreted the comment that same way. No one even imagined any such thing as we watched CNN.

It's always possible that something surprising will turn out to be true in the end. That said, it's hard to know how someone still would have thought that as of Monday night—would have been willing to go on network TV and say what Kimmel seemed to have said.

Why did Kimmel say what he did? That takes us to this report in Mediaite about what Heather Cox Richardson said:

...Substack’s Most Popular Author Torched Over False Claim About Charlie Kirk’s Assassin

Heather Cox Richardson, Substack’s most popular individual author, is being raked over the coals online over a false claim she made about Tyler Robinson, 22-year-old arrested for allegedly assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk last week.

In a post over the weekend, Richardson wrote the following:

"But in fact, the alleged shooter was not someone on the left. The alleged killer, Tyler Robinson, is a young white man from a Republican, gun enthusiast family, who appears to have embraced the far right, disliking Kirk for being insufficiently radical.

"Rather than grappling with reality, right-wing figures are using Kirk’s murder to prop up their fictional world. Briefly, they claimed Robinson had been “radicalized” in college. Then, when it turned out he had spent only a single semester at a liberal arts college before going to trade school, MAGA pivoted to attack those who allegedly had celebrated Kirk’s death on social media."

But there is presently no evidence whatsoever to suggest that Robinson is a far-right extremist who was upset Kirk didn’t advocate a more strident conservatism. To the contrary, Utah Governor Spencer Cox (R) revealed on Saturday that “It’s very clear to us and to the investigators that this was a person [Robinson] who was deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology.” The next day, Cox verified Fox News reporting that Robinson was dating a transgender individual whom he lived with.

And so on from there.

In our view, that assessment by Governor Cox is just a somewhat fuzzy allegation at this point. As far as we know, no one has demonstrated what the "leftist ideology" in question was, or where Tyler Richardson had allegedly been "indoctrinated" by it.

There may have been no such "ideology" or "indoctrination" at all. Still:

This is the Substack post by Professor Richardson from which that quotation is drawn. It seems to have been posted on Saturday, September 13 or on Sunday, September 14.

It's hard to know why Professor Richardson would have been so sure that the shooter was a man of "the far right" at that rather late date. But Kimmel's comment seems to be drawn, live and direct, from that same general formulation.

The comment got Professor Richardson subjected to a fair amount of pushback and ridicule. It now has Kimmel suspended. Our question would be this:

Why did Professor Richardson seem to think it was clear that Tyler Richardson (no relation) hailed from the MAGA ranks, or from ranks even farther to the right?  We don't have the slightest idea, but motivated thinking—submission to tribal Storyline—is a problem in Blue America too.

In fact, whenever tribal war breaks out, true belief in preferred Storyline becomes a problem everywhere—all through our human ranks.

Richardson's Substack is very Blue. It can be a place to go for reassurance about the accuracy of Blue American tribal beliefs.

Does Kimmel read that popular Substack? We know of no way to decide.

    1. So tens of millions of MAGA immediately on board with fact free Robinson's brain was corrupted from the left hypothesis. Hundreds of thousands of leftists speculated what if Robinson was part of the Fuentes Groyper Boys, who have have been at "war" with Kirk after Kirk left the group, largely over being celibate. The Fuentes groypers post their videos of their disrupting Kirk's events. So logical speculation. From the left. The right is nutbalzz. As usual.

"We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

It is true that the right was working desperately to avoid showing/acknowledging the Robinson kid's had been indoctrinated in the far right gun culture their whole lives. In the Murdoch owned NY Post all the family pictures were without the kids wielding large semi and automatic rifles. From Boebert to Green, you folks relish those family Christmas rifle pictures, dontcha' know? They omitted the picture of Robison grinning ear to ear firing a 50 caliber machine gun. Own it bitches. He was one of your own gun nuts. And quit lying about Kimmel.

  7. And in an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal, Karl Rove writes:
... there has been a disturbing and growing undercurrent in our national conversation and on the internet, a pronounced emphasis on “they” and “them.” Charlie would be alive but for “them.” “They” killed him. “They” are responsible for his death. “They” must be made to pay.

No. Charlie Kirk wasn’t killed by “them.” “They” didn’t pull the trigger. One person did, apparently a young man driven by impulse and a terrible hate. If there were a “they” involved, law enforcement would find “them” and the justice system would hold “them” accountable. But “he” and “him” are the correct pronouns for this horrendous act....

Using Charlie’s murder to justify retaliation against political rivals is wrong and dangerous. It will further divide and embitter our country. No good thing will come of it.

On October 27, 2018, a man attacked Tree of Life – Or L'Simcha Congregation[b] synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The congregation, along with New Light Congregation and Congregation Dor Hadash, which also worshipped in the building, was attacked during Shabbat morning services. The perpetrator killed eleven people and wounded six, in the deadliest attack on a local Jewish community in American history.[6]

The perpetrator, 46-year-old Robert Gregory Bowers,[7] was shot multiple times by police and arrested at the scene.[8] Bowers had earlier posted antisemitic comments against HIAS (formerly, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) on the online alt-tech social network Gab.[9][10][11] Dor Hadash[12] had participated in HIAS's National Refugee Shabbat the previous week. Referring to Central American migrant caravans and immigrants, Bowers posted a message on Gab in which he wrote that "HIAS likes to bring invaders in that kill our people. I can't sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I'm going in."

    11. Without any evidence whatsoever, dumbass MAGA DiC posits that Robinson was groomed by the left. Robinson had a relationship with a transitioning female. He stated that his motive involved the fact that Kirk’s hatred could not be negotiated. Right wing rhetoric foments hatred for transgender individuals; Kirk was steeped in it. No statement yet obtained suggests that Robinson was left wing or influenced by politics; on the contrary his friends said otherwise and he did not vote in 2 consecutive elections. Christian National rhetoric dehumanizing people has its tragic consequences which have nothing to do with party affiliation. Robinson saw his romantic partner threatened by hate mongering on the right and decided to eliminate a spearhead of it. Words spewing hatred had consequences when interpreted by a boy steeped in guns. Quotes about blacks from Kirk’s podcast can only be interpreted as deeply racist as well. That Charlie Kirk is some kind of hero to DiC is not the least bit surprising

Newt Gingrich blamed the children's deaths on "the permissiveness of the Liberals". Of course, it turned out the woman had been raped repeatedly as a child by her conservative preacher father.
Needless to say, I don't have to tell someone as informed as you, that Gingrich never apologized for his douchebag remarks about Liberals, in the 30 years he's been given the chance.

For many years the media marched in lockstep behind any stated liberal position or narrative regardless of how implausible. E.g. Joseph Biden is smarter than ever. 15. Kimmel and Dowd were 100% correct no matter how Somerby chooses to misread Kimmel. Early on, one of several narratives was that Robinson was a groyper, and Fox would have no part of that. Kimmel was stating that fact: they wanted to distance his motives from the right wing space they inhabit as much as possible, and label him left wing without any supporting evidence . In so doing, they mischaracterized him as left wing despite his having not voted in 2 consecutive elections and being characterized as overtly apolitical by his friends. The woman formerly known as Bruce Jenner is ample proof that sexual orientation and party affiliations are not in lock step.

  9. Accused Charlie Kirk assassin Tyler Robinson played pornographic “furry” games online and followed artists known to draw cartoons depicting pedophilia, according to a shocking report.

Friends of the 22-year-old suspect told the Daily Mail that Robinson — who allegedly left a sex-related gaming message on a bullet casing used to kill Kirk — used the account name “craftin247″ on multiple gaming and online platforms where he engaged in the fringe “furry” subculture.

A Steam account with that name shows he downloaded and played a dating simulator called “Furry Shades of Gay” — which describes itself as a game of “love, queer relationships, hot gay sex and slapstick humor,” the Mail reported.

Robinson, who was dating his transgender roommate, played the game enough that he earned a prize: an anthropomorphic cat character who dresses as a French maid, according to the outlet.

An account on the website FurAffinity.net, which features sexualized images of cartoon animal characters, also features an account name matching one that Robinson used.

Just last week, craftin247’s account on the site said he had “recently watched” content created by a user called RedRusker — an artist known for furry porn showing child characters having sex.

  17. It seems to me that part of the problem is that people are confusing support for LGBTQ+ people with being leftist. There is a lot more to being liberal than identity politics or tolerance for diversity or human rights. These things can be untangled from each other too. Libertarians are often in favor of human rights without being liberal in other ways, such as economics. Many are Trump supporters. And look at RFK Jr. He is not especially MAGA but still right wing these days.

The complexity of views may make it hard to pigeonhole Tyler Robinson, but that doesn't negate the fact that Trump and the right continues to blame the left for his actions, while the left claims he is right wing due to his guns, groyper memes and Mormon upbringing. He is certainly not lefty just because he is gay or furry. Neither of those things is partisan.

Because of the vigorous attempts to pin this on the left, the right (which has the louder voice because it is law enforcement and the government) has made it more difficult to know what is true about this shooter. That will be clarified during his trial.

Some on the right are claiming that Gov Cox has the facts (I think Somerby said that) but after Cox made a reasonable statement, received a phone call from Trump, then recanted on his reasonableness, we cannot trust his statements. He visibly sold out to whatever Trump threatened him with or promised him. That makes his statements as fatuous as anyone's else's.

As long as this is a matter of picking preferred narratives (as Somerby used to call this situation), people are only proclaiming their loyalties, not saying anything true about the shooting. We still do not know Robinson's motives. It does seem pretty clear that something went wrong in his life, which was not liberal and Mormon Utah standard issue.

Somerby is saying nothing helpful about this matter.

  19. Kimmel's statement is not perfectly accurate; neither is the statement by the Utah's governor. Robinson was not MAGA, although he spent quite a bit of time in the MAGA environment. Is it his family where he learned that some things cannot be negotiated and can only be dealt with a gun? Who knows.
Is he a fervent leftist? There's no indication of that. He certainly despised Kirk for his views on gays because he was one himself. That may be the sum total of Robinson's convictions: I don't like people who talk shit about people like me or people that I love. There's no depth there. To call his unknown beliefs an "ideology" is dishonest.
But the only wrong views that are allowed are the ones approved by this administration. Jon Stewart has put together a good montage of all the cruel bullshit that Trump and his ilk have spouted over the years.

    4. I told the bitch to drop out of college, buy a toothbrush, scrub the floor with it; and we lived happily ever after just as Charlie preached. I do have to slap her around a bit to keep her in line. God is great. I love u Charlie.

  24. It's too soon to talk about Charle Kirk. Let's wait a few months for things to politically cool down, and then forget it happened. Like we do with school shootings.

  25. Charlie did not deserve to die. He wasn’t a kid at school.

    1. But he was sexually attracted to them.

    2. Right. So by your logic the kids at school deserve to be shot? God you righties are a bunch of sickos.

    3. In Evergreen CO, the kid who shot several students and himself was targeting teachers and gay kids. He didn't know exactly who was gay, so he shot up the music and drama students who were locked in the band room. Of course, playing an instrument doesn't make you gay, even in high school, so this was a foolish effort. But this illustrates the stupidity of both those who are radicalized into white supremacist, right wing hate, but also of the ignorance behind their hate.

We see that ignorance here every day in the comments of the right wing trolls who have chosen to haunt these blog comments. Somerby tolerates them and their ridiculous garbage, when he isn't writing his own ignorant nonsense.

    4. It’s true there are many straights in music and drama, some of them very good, but those are fundamentally gay activities.

    5. That is one of the more asinine statements ever posted here, and you have some stiff competition. Congrats.

    6. You deny that music and drama are gay? You’re homophobic.

    7. Next you’ll say movie stars are mostly gay.

This explains a lot about why the right wants to defund the arts.

    8. Some great stars are straight, but it’s still a gay art form. You’re homophobic.

  26. Can you get more on brand than a Republican shooting Charlie Kirk to death to distract from the Epstein Files?
