Blue elites are deferential to him: Thanksgiving came early, over the weekend, here on this sprawling campus.
Starting with last Friday's report, we granted ourselves a brief reprise from a dispiriting task. We refer to the dismal task of discussing the sheer inanity of the Fox News Channel's Gutfeld! show, not to mention such programs as The Five and even Fox & Friends Weekend.
Also, The Big Weekend Show!
It's painful and tiring to take on that assignment. In Friday's report, we merely created a list of sources for future reference.
As you can see, we posted links to six profiles of Greg Gutfeld or of the Gutfeld! show. This week, we'll conclude our depressing review of this remarkable program.
Just for the record, and as we've long noted, this program isn't "a late-night comedy show." Despite the deference to the Fox News Channel which is found all through those Gutfeld! profiles in question, Gutfeld! is actually a primetime propaganda/messaging show—a primetime propaganda/messaging aired by a "cable news" channel.
Its messaging is accomplished under cover of "comedy stylings." But this is not a comedy show, and its extremely peculiar host is not "The King of Late Night."
For the record, the sheer stupidity of this show is accomplished, right from the start, by the way it's constructed. Simply put, the Fox News Channel assembles ever-shifting four-member panels to perform in service to Gutfeld, the host.
None of them seem to have any particular expertise regarding any particular major news topic. That said, their role on the program is obvious:
These four naifs proceed to agree with every bit of messaging offered by their highly partisan host. In this way, the public is given a given a quintet of incompetents speaking as one, often in ways which are remarkably coarse—and in ways which will strike many people as undisguisedly misogynistic.
This may be the dumbest show ever aired by any of our three major "cable news" channel. Beyond that, did we mention the apparent misogyny which seems to form a key part of its mission and its soul?
In the face of this ugly nonsense, Blue America's major news orgs have agreed to obscure the truth about this heavily watched "cable news" program. program, to the extent that they deign to acknowledge its existence at all.
On Friday, we posted links to five profiles of the Gutfeld! show which have been published this year. In our view, four of the five have worked rather hard to avoid discussing the apparent misogyny which spills from the garbage can each evening a 10 p.m. Eastern—but also at 7 p.m. out on the Pacific coast.
Starting tomorrow, we'll review the one profile, out of those five, which we haven't cited before. That profile failed to mention the apparent misogyny at all—and that's a striking fact in itself. But this one profile approached the Gutfeld! phenomenon from a unique perspective.
This profile was different from all the rest. Here's another link to that profile, which was published by Mediaite in August of this year:

OPINION
How Greg Gutfeld Went From Fox’s Most Irreverent Host to Its Most Servile
This profile was written by John Daly of BernardGoldberg.com. It was explicitly listed as an Opinion piece, but it chronicles the way this program's host transitioned from his role as an aggressively anti-Trump voice to the role he plays today, in which he goes on the air, along with his circle of stooges, positioned as the president's "most servile" supporter.
Concerning his central claim, Daly came with receipts! You can peruse his profile today, or you can wait until we run throw his presentation in tomorrow's report.
For ourselves, we'll start our week with Maureen Dowd's column in yesterday's New York Times. We couldn't help thinking how much her profile of President Trump sounded like a profile of Greg Gutfeld himself.
President Trump has been on a jag of late. During this jag, he has attacked a former supporter as Marjorie Traitor Greene, and he has repeatedly suggested that six Democratic members of Congress should perhaps be slated for DEATH.
Along the way, he surprisingly set one day aside to stage an Oval Office lovefest with a former "Communist" of his loud fever dreams, mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. On Fox, they know that Mamdani is a "full-blown Communist" because he wants to run free buses in his city, the same way Stalin did.
With respect to President Trump, we've suggested that you see these behaviors as part of an ongoing medical story. But we'll set that aside for another set of days—a set of days which may come soon after this week's festive holiday.
All in all, the president's behavior has been quite erratic of late. At the start of yesterday's column, Dowd visited some ancient history—the insult the president recently threw at a highly experienced and competent journalist, Catherine Lucey of Bloomberg News.
As of yesterday, Dowd's column was already somewhat dated. But this is the way the column started, headline included:
Piggy Gets Polite
Step by slimy step, President Trump has made us numb to his crudeness and cruelty.
The solipsistic Trump, with the parasitic tech emperors and the internet itself, is degrading American values, making honor and integrity seem anachronistic.
Still, some moments shock as beyond the pale. Whatever the pale is anymore.
On Air Force One recently, Trump cut off Catherine Lucey, a Bloomberg News journalist pressing him about the release of Epstein files that could further implicate Trump in the lurid mess. Stabbing his finger at her face, the President of the United States snapped at Lucey: “Quiet! Quiet, piggy.”
[...]
It was nauseating, if not surprising. Trump loves to call people who annoy him “pigs” and “dogs,” and in the case of his inamorata Stormy Daniels, “horseface.”
It was misogynistic, but Trump bullies both men and women, attacking their looks and character and hurling nasty, intensely personal epithets and nicknames. He mocked Chris Christie, once an ally, as “a fat pig,” “a slob” and “sloppy."
Dowd used the term "misogynistic" to describe this pattern of conduct. That said, no one compares liberal women to horses, cattle, pigs and "livestock" as frequently, and as directly, as Greg Gutfeld does.
Like Trump, Gutfeld also mocks some men with whom he disagrees as being way too fat, or perhaps as lacking control of their bowels. And as with the president, so too here: Chris Christie is one of the men Gutfeld likes to mock for being too fat and a slob.
To our eye and to our ear, this is one of the beards behind which Gutfeld hides his apparent loathing of women—but that's an impression for another day. Let's peruse another chunk of Dowd's column about President Trump:
When I interviewed him decades ago in his more appropriate incarnation as a flashy developer hogging attention in New York, he would rate the looks of supermodels and actresses, dropping snap judgments like, “Sadly, Heidi Klum is no longer a 10.” Sometimes, he sent me pictures of female journalists from newspapers, commenting with a Sharpie scrawl on who he thought looked good or bad.
Politicians were never insult comics before Trump. But in the 2016 primaries he learned sneering deflected from substance.
Politicians were never insult comics before the current president! That said, Gutfeld was never a comedian at all until the Fox News Channel spent years grooming him for his current role in unusual program which sometimes aired at 2 or 3 in the morning.
As far as we know, the full story of that strange development campaign hasn't yet been told. But the process produced the remarkably coarse host of a primetime "cable news" program—a person who repeatedly asked, during the 2024 campaign, if Hunter Biden had started "banging" or "[BLEEP]ing" his stepmother, the first lady, yet.
(Fox would let the word "banging" air. When he used the F-word in such contexts, they would BLEEP it out.)
Back in his developer days, did President Trump denigrate a major female model as "no longer a 10?" For better or worse—the judgment is yours—that's a game Gutfeld also plays as he keeps telling his very large viewership that Taylor Swift is actually only a 5, or possibly a 6.
That said, the problems with the Gutfeld! show extend well past its panel selection and its apparent misogyny. The problems extend to the inane arguments its host is constantly willing to make, secure in the knowledge that the stooges who surround him will offer no words of complaint.
We'll look at a few of those inane presentations as the week proceeds. As Dowd continued, she discussed the ways the sitting president has flipped in his assessments of Mamdani and of the "traitor" Greene:
That might seem to echo the way Gutfeld has flipped in his assessment of the sitting president himself.
Today, he's a fawning admirer of President Trump. Back then, as Daly recalls, he was aggressively anti-Trump.
Needless to say, people are free to change their opinion of a political figure like President Trump. But as Daly's profile seems to show, Gutfeld's flip regarding Trump has been extreme—and this earlier profile from the New York Times seems to suggest, if only timidly, how that may have happened:
The New York Times: July 2, 2023
How Fox News (Yes, Fox News) Managed to Beat ‘The Tonight Show’
Greg Gutfeld has installed his brand of insult conservatism as the institutional voice for the next generation of Fox News viewer. And it’s catching on.
No, Virginia! Gutfeld! actually isn't a late-night show, and it isn't a "comedy show." It's a propaganda messaging program aired by a flyweight corporate entity which poses as a "cable news" channel.
Blue America's major news orgs have fled in fear from such facts. Tomorrow, we'll walk you through John Daly's account of the way Greg Gutfeld became so servile to President Trump.
Gutfeld is servile to President Trump. Meanwhile, his clown show proceeds, night after night, with barely a word of comment from Blue America's high-end press.
They refuse to report or discuss what happens on this "cable news" show, or on a program like The Five. They refuse to report the misogyny which seems to function as the backbone of Gutfeld! Also, they peddle the transparently bogus claims by Fox according to which Gutfeld! is a late-night comedy show and Gutfeld himself is "The King of Late Night."
Two questions will lurk this week:
Why is Greg Gutfeld so servile to President Trump? Also, why are orgs like the New York Times so deferential to someone like him?
Tomorrow: Gutfeld, way back then
Marjorie Taylor Greene is self-servile.
ReplyDeleteGood riddance. One down. Mace and Boebert to go.
DeleteCecelia, what’s wrong with Greene, Mace, and Boebert? They wanted the Epstein files released, and they worked across the aisle.
DeleteAnonymouse 5:55pm, I’ve complained about those ladies before the Epstein thing RE-hit… those showboats and Crockett, AOC, and Talib, need to go.
DeleteCecelia doesn't like women who get more attention than she does.
DeleteAnonymouse 8:28pm, I get more than my share of attention from you, I’m fine, thank you.
DeleteTlaib, not Talib. You aren’t fine.

ReplyDelete"For the record, the sheer stupidity of this show is accomplished, right from the start, by the way it's constructed."
Without getting any deeper into this idiotic Manhattan-project-style investigation of a comedy show, how stupid could it be, really? Surely it can't be any stupider than any equivalent idiot-Democrat show, like Colbert? Right?
"Politicians were never insult comics before the current president! "
Right! And that's one of the reasons why we love our President, The Donald!
Keep draining the swamp, Mr. President, keep draining the fucking swamp!
Thanks, Ghislaine. Btw, we're going to get you a better masseuse, it may take a few days, so don't go blabbing everything in the meantime.
DeleteGreg Gutfeld should not be calling names on his show like that, and neither should Trump as president. It lacks dignity. But this is not an important women's issue. It is trivial beside such matters as access to birth control and abortion, equal pay and hiring, especially at top levels in business, military and govt, and so on. Resolution of the Epstein abuses against women and girls is more important than this stupid name-calling.
ReplyDeleteSomerby's obsessive focus on Gutfeld appears to be a symptom of cognitive decline. If he wants to discuss misogyny and late night, he might focus on Louis C.K.'s attempt to crawl back onto the stage after his admitted abuse of female colleagues. Or Bill Maher's embrace of the right as he ages.
Somerby refuses to discuss anything meaningful, while continuing to bash blue America:
"No, Virginia! Gutfeld! actually isn't a late-night show, and it isn't a "comedy show." It's a propaganda messaging program aired by a flyweight corporate entity which poses as a "cable news" channel.
Blue America's major news orgs have fled in fear from such facts."
Blue America, unlike Somerby, can separate the wheat from the chaff. Meanwhile, Somerby persists in calling the NY Times and similar corporate media "blue" when they are owned and run by wealthy corporations who are servile to Trump because they are concerned with making money, not serving their readership and certainly not showing up our democracy by supplying voters with information.
Gutfeld is a goon, but why is Somerby spending his last years on earth pumping out garbage like today's post?
“Somerby's obsessive focus on Gutfeld appears to be a symptom of cognitive decline. If he wants to discuss misogyny and late night, he might focus on Louis C.K.'s attempt to crawl back onto the stage after his admitted abuse of female colleagues. Or Bill Maher's embrace of the right as he ages.”
DeleteBob, how much will it cost for you to take her up on this advice? I’m willing to cough up some cash just to watch her take back every…well-intented…piece of advice that she just squeezed out like road apples.
We should force people to cough up cash for Bob to take her advice.
DeleteThat way, we can all threaten to leave the country with no intention of doing so, like corporations do when we threaten to raise their tax rates.
Or like Richard Gere.
DeleteGere is right about Tibet.
DeleteWhile Somerby ignores the rest of politics, Tiedrich asks important questions:
ReplyDelete"so, there’s this new ‘Ukraine peace plan,’ and, well —
tell me, is it a bad thing when Vlad Putin’s stooges dictate US foreign policy? is it a bad thing when the US Secretary of State passes off some farcical Russian ‘peace plan’ as his own?
is it a bad thing when the US foreign policy negotiating team is made up of corrupt, unqualified and inexperienced amateurs?
is it a bad thing when the US Secretary of State and the US Vice President apparently hate each other’s guts?
and is it a bad thing when the US President is so cognitively impaired and detached from reality that he has no idea that any of this dumbfuckery is going on right under his rotting nose?"

DeleteThis (from Simon Rosenberg):
ReplyDelete"Call Your Senators and House Members And Demand They Stand With Ukraine, Not Putin - From news reports this morning it’s hard to understand where this disastrous, disgraceful Vance-Witkoff-Kushner betrayal of Ukraine lies now, but it is critical that Congress hears from us today; hears our outrage; hears our demands that they work to block the selling out of Ukraine, Europe, and the America of the Four Freedoms to Putin and global autocracy. Ask to see statements, and if they haven’t made one demand they put one out condemning Trump and his corrupt band of traitors immediately. What we have to hope for is that the negotiations slow down; Trump’s absurd deadline of this Thursday gets extended; and Witkoff and Kushner get tossed from the US negotiating team after their historic betrayal of Ukraine and the West.
While Trump has done many damaging and dangerous things since he’s returned to the White House what he did last week - in part we have to believe to change the subject from his epic Epstein repudiation and humiliation - this rancid embrace of Putin and shiving of Ukraine and Europe is in my mind the most destructive and dangerous thing he’s done. It is why we must make our calls today. Trump has been rebuked in recent weeks in Congress on his tariffs and his own ongoing rancid Epstein cover up; the American people rebuked him in the November elections; now we must rebuke him on his outrageous appeasement of Putin and the selling out of Ukraine, Europe and America itself."
Yes, Trump is exaggerating when he calls Mamdani a "full blown" communist. Mamdani IS someone who will grow a city government that's already too big -- where the totality of laws and regulations make life worse for residents.
ReplyDeleteWhy do voters elect governments that keep expanding when government expansion is the problem? Because the harm done by too much government is hard to see. The harm is all the the good things that DON'T happen.
E.g., Palo Alto had a professional opera company called West Bay Opera. Then the state passed a law "giving" gig workers benefits like those received by full time permanent employees. Of course, the state didn't actually "give" the workers anything. Only employers give stuff to workers. The state actually restricted the terms under which gig workers could be hired. Unfortunately, the mandated contract terms made it unaffordable for the West Bay Opera to hire singers and musicians. So, they went bankrupt and I no longer have a local opera to go to.
"Yes, Trump is exaggerating when he calls Mamdani a "full blown" communist."
DeleteThis is not an exaggeration, It's called "rhetoric". There's never been any successful politician in the world who spoke differently.
The only difference between Bob's beloved Democrats and the Donald is that Democrats are idiots and the Donald is a genius.
Quiet. Quiet, piggy.
Delete"Why do voters elect governments that keep expanding when government expansion is the problem?"
DeleteThe most fundamantal problem in America today is income inequality. Less government means more inequality.
Hector - I agree that less government means more inequality (in some cases). But, less government also means greater prosperity. Even the poorest are wealthier where there is more economic freedom.
DeleteWho is better off? A "poor" black American, who has enough to eat in an unequal country where Musk has half a trillion dollars? Or an "equal" black person in Africa who is starving in in a place where everyone else is also starving?
Even the poorest are wealthier where there is more economic freedom.
DeleteHow so you figure, David? You want to make us privy to your wonderful Panglossian world?
A "poor" black American, who has enough to eat in an unequal country where Musk has half a trillion dollars?
How'bout a poor white American? This post is an amazing mixture of racism and ignorant, pollyannish thinking, clearly inspired by a mindless consumption of right wing propaganda.
DeleteGet real, productive, jobs, Soros-bots, and you'll become equal. Your feelings of inferiority will disappear in no time. It's that simple, Soros-bots.
Sssh. Quiet, piggy.
DeleteIlya, when did it become racist to link with black people to inequity?
DeleteAre those our only two choices, Dickhead in Cal?
DeleteAt least Mao has the excuse of being raped by a Republican Senator when he was 9-years old.
DeleteWhat's David in Cal's excuse?
Anonymouse 2:36pm, you could go Taylor Swift vs Beyoncé.
DeleteDavis does not live near Palo Alto, nor attend opera there, and he does not understand CA law.
DeleteAs has just been revealed, although it is nothing new, it turns out most of these Republican trolls are in fact foreign bots.
Beyoncé is far superior to Taylor Swift.
DeleteAnonymouse 3:11pm, yes. In every way.
DeleteSuperior as a musician.
DeleteAnonymouse 3:38pm, and more interesting and genuine. Far more inclined to privacy.. More attractive. It’s puzzling how Swift can have so much beauty, but no sex appeal whatsoever. A pretty child. Just like her audience.
DeleteIlya, when did it become racist to link with black people to inequity?
DeleteI will leave for you as a homework assignment, Cecilia. Start out by examining different contexts, e.g.: are we talking about racial inequalities? No. We are talking about poverty in general. Given that, we should focus on poverty and not backhandedly bring in race, implying that poverty programs are for black people. As a statement of simple fact, there are more poor white people. Anyways, hope this helps with your homework assignment.
It's not hard to write a whole dissertation of the thought-free statements that David makes. In the coming days, our analysts will return to this topic and generalize it to see how many people are afflicted with the same shallow grasp of political events as David is.
IIya, poverty is typically connected to racial inequality. Comparing black Americans, whose ancestors were forcibly brought here as slaves, to Africans who were not imported to the U.S. is not an argument for any inherent “advantages” of slavery… even with the history of the slave trade in Africa (and in the U.S.) David's comparison is realistic, not racist. Conversely, comparing Elon Musk’s…white self…or his plight…to Africans, average African-Americans, or to white folks, is useless.
DeleteAgain, the disadvantage that black people face was not the context. David was making a specious statement that even the poorest people in America have enough to eat, and felt compelled to bring the race into the discussion. David was both wrong on the facts: there are plenty of food insecure households. But David is pretty much always wrong on the facts. However, there was an unpleasant odor to his post, because he needed to taint it with an allusion to race; that is, David needed to equate poverty and race. He needed to emphasize how wealthy white people are feeding poor black people. And if pressed, David will be quick to point out how he marched in the civil rights movement.
DeleteI am sorry, Cecilia, but you will not be getting a passing grade for this homework assignment. Do not fret, though, there will be others.
Get real, productive, jobs, Soros-bots, and you'll become equal.
DeleteWhy would I do that when your hard work is feeding us? Life is good.
Cecelia has set herself up to evaluate the sex appeal of Taylor Swift. Women don't typically do that unless they are lesbian. They might talk about fashion sense or trendiness or even beauty, but not sex appeal. That is what men judge. Yet another slip that suggests Cecelia is more likely male than female.
DeleteIIya, there’s nothing wrong with David’s point. He wasn’t minimizing the slave trade, our racial history, etc. Look at what’s happening in Nigeria. It’s not racist to argue that black Americans have it better in the U. S.than they would in Africa regardless of the slavery of their ancestors and despite any individual’s current hardship. Despite the rich white folks. That’s not a patronizing statement. It’s not one that justifies racism. It’s a fact.
DeleteAnonymouse 8:36pm, women evaluate other women (and men) all the time. For you to suggest that straight women in general are blind to or uninterested in the appearance and sexual allure of other women is absurd. You might as well argue that fashion and makeup ads are targeted to men and lesbians. Now go fix me a sandwich, woman.
DeleteNot sexually. Women evaluate each other as competition or in appreciation but a sexual response makes someone gay (or bi) by definition. Ads are targeted at consumers. Your remark sounds male not female. It is harder for you to pretend than you think. You aren’t pulling it off.
DeleteAnonymouse 9:44pm, my saying that That Taylor Swift is beautiful, but not sexy…. is an evaluation. However, it’s interesting to know, and it explains a lot, that any assessment of someone’s sex appeal, male or female, means that you’re headed for the “back massager”.
DeleteHow else would you know who is sexy than by introspection on your own sexual response? You know what tastes good by eating it and responding to it. If you had no taste buds your evaluation would be skewed. A woman evaluating another woman’s sex appeal has no idea how a man would evaluate her, unless she had her own sexual response (gay or bi). Your claim to make such an evaluation suggests you are inaccurate, gay or bi, or male.I think male is most likely given that you are so sure you’re right.
DeleteCecelia finds Beyoncé more attractive than Taylor.
DeleteCecelia is a Black man.
Anonymouse 11;24pm, whatever your fantasy is about me, you sure dig it.
DeleteCecelia is a White woman. Let’s all try to regain our sanity.
DeleteCecelia,
DeleteAll black people are superior to white people in every way. Why should Beyonce and Swift be any different?
Anonymouse 6:39am, observe that Anonymouse 11:24pm has stated that since I think Beyoncé is more attractive than Swift, I am therefore a * black* male. As though no white guy should find a black woman attractive.
DeleteAll you have to do is let anonymices talk. They’ll show you what they are.
All you have to do is ignore Right-wingers. They're all bigots, anyway.
DeleteAs anonymous 8:19am, right….you’re here 24/7 calling TDH a rightwing blog.
DeleteCecelia is a White woman, and she finds Beyoncé, a Black woman, attractive.
DeleteTrump/Bondi DOJ Blows Another One. And Another One.
ReplyDelete"Comey, James Cases Dismissed as Judge Disqualifies Interim US attorney Lindsey Halligan"
Trumptards everywhere say it's not fair. Why should the Trump admin have to follow the same rules everyone else does?
I saw that Hector. Do you know what rule was violated in appointing this prosecutor?
DeleteDon't bother answering the Dickhead in Cal, Hector.
DeleteGo look it up yourself, Dickhead, you fucking fascist freak.
With pleasure.
DeleteHalligan’s appointment violated a rule limiting the ability to appoint more than one interim US Attorney without Senate confirmation.
Trump recently made 1 interim appoitment, but then fired the interim guy because he refused to prosecute the case against Comey.
So Halligan was appointed on an interim basis. And because Trump was hellbent to get Comey, and the statute of limitations was running out, they had to file without much preparation.
And none of the career prosecutors in that office would help Halligan with this case because it was so weak and because they held her qualifications (being nice looking) in such contempt.
So she went in and made more than one mistake of her own that could have resulted in the case being dismissed.
But it's important to remember that this case was dismissed, not because of Halligan's incompetence but because Trump, like a 3-year old, has no impulse control.
David, she’s past her prime, no longer a ten. Trump should appoint Cecelia.
DeleteTo Republicans, all adults are on the downside of sexual attractiveness.
DeleteAfter Trump, Bondi will be disbarred and face criminal charges, as will much of his admin.
DeleteOnly considering short term wins will bite them in the behind in the end.
Cecilia, have you ever been a beauty pageant contender?
DeleteYes. I was voted Miss Krebs Cycle.
DeleteBullshit.
DeleteCecelia came in 5th, due to one of the contestants being trans.
Anonhmouse 4:25pm, she wasn’t trans she just forgot to wax.
DeleteTraditionally, krebs meant crab. Now it means cancer. Of course the cycle is active in healthy tissue as much as in malignant tumors. Krebs just happened to be the name of a scientist who did important research on it.
DeleteAnonymouse 5:16pm, shouldn’t you thank me for your opportunity to lecture people on stuff that they could googled too.
DeleteThank you.
DeleteCancer meant crab, too. Early researchers thought malignant tumors looked like crabs. So cancer now means disease with malignant tumors.
DeleteAncient star-gazers thought some dim stars between Gemini and Leo looked like a crab, so they invented the constellation Cancer. It’s hard to spot, so just remember Gemini and Leo, which are easy.
Why crabs have a hold on people’s imaginations I don’t know.
