HEALTH: Tur was also concerned by the Sharpies!

TUESDAY, MARCH 31, 2026

No specialists need apply: As we noted yesterday, the president held a televised "cabinet meeting" last Thursday.

That evening, CNN's Erin Burnett was concerned. Her program, Erin Burnett OutFront, starts at 7 p.m. That evening, she started like this:

BURNETT (3/26/26) Out front next, breaking news:

Iran with a new threat against U.S. troops as Trump reportedly weighs new military options to seize Iranian land.

Also breaking: Are TSA lines about to finally get shorter? An announcement just in that could make a major difference at airports across the country tonight.

And why did President Trump spend five minutes talking about Sharpies today? Is this what Americans want? Let's go OUTFRONT.

With respect to the cabinet meeting, he had her (concerned) with the Sharpies! Granted, it wasn't the first piece of breaking news that night. But the Sharpies were out front as Burnett opened her show.

As we noted yesterday, Burnett called upon S. E. Cupp to help her discuss the five minutes the president spent on the Sharpies. Cupp was concerned about that matter too. As we noted yesterday, here's part of what she said:

CUPP: Listen, the truth is, most voters are not watching these insane cabinet meetings. We have the pleasure of having to do that, and they are insane.

And if you watch them, that's one, one of several moments that are just kind of nutso. If you watch them, you have to seriously question Trump's stability.

"It's insane. It's insane," she later said. "It could get people killed."

In fairness, it wasn't clear, at that later point, what Cupp was actually talking about.

Was she talking about the president's conduct? Or was she talking about "the groveling, the flattery" of the cabinet members"the North Korea coded kind of attitude you have to have in this White House?"

At that point, it wasn't clear what was insane. As we noted yesterday, the segment ended with this:

CUPP: He hasn't even told the American public why were in Iran, when we're going to get out, what to expect. He hasn't conditioned us to know what's about to happen. And he's rambling for four minutes about Sharpies. It's embarrassing.

BURNETT: Four minutes and 56 seconds, to be exact.

Linguistically, "embarrassing" seems less troubling than "insane." But along the way, Cupp had made this statement about the "nutso moments" from that day's televised event:

You have to seriously question Trump's stability.

You have to (seriously) question the president's stability, Cupp had plainly said. But does anyone have a clear idea what she meant by that?

During the program, Burnett played a brief chunk of videotape from the president's five-minute ramble. Later, People magazine presented a lengthy report about the ramble, including extensive excerpts of what the president had actually said.

(Headline: Trump Rambles About Sharpie Pens for 5 Straight Minutes During High-Level Cabinet Meeting amid Iran War. To read that report, just click here. Lengthy quotations from Trump included!)

To appearances, Burnett was concerned about what she had seen when the president went on that extensive side trip. But please note what she and her producers did:

They didn't book a medical specialist to discuss what the president's conduct might mean. Instead, they booked a political commentatorand when that commentator voiced concern about the president's "stability," Burnett made no attempt to ask her what she might mean.

So it goes as our major journalists tiptoe on eggshells, pretending to discuss such points. Plainly, Burnett and Cupp thought there was something to be concerned about in the president's five-minute discussion of Sharpiesbut then again, so did MS NOW's Katy Tur.

Yesterday afternoon, Tur devoted a segment to the same topic on her two-hour afternoon program, Katy Tur Reports. In our view, Tur is thoroughly sharp.

At Mediate, Alex Griffing published a detailed report about what Tur now said. Headline included, his report, with videotape included, started off like this

‘Is Donald Trump Well?’ MS NOW’s Katy Tur Does Deep Dive on President’s Mental Acuity

MS NOW anchor Katy Tur asked her viewers on Monday if President Donald Trump is still mentally fit, taking a deep dive into polls showing a growing number of Americans are starting to ask the question.

“Is Donald Trump well? Is his head in the presidency? Does he have the mental acuity to lead this country?” Tur began to kick off the segment, adding:

"More people are starting to doubt that—beyond, of course, Democrats who have always doubted it. "

Soon, Tur was focusing on the Sharpies monologue. Specifically, she was asking about the president's "mental acuity," just as that headline said.

Tur was concerned by that five-minute ramble too! In our view, that concern is perfectly reasonableis quite important, in fact.

That said, Tur didn't bring anyone on her show to evaluate what the president said. After playing extensive tape of his comments about the Sharpiesafter listing various claims by the president which had apparently turned out to be falseTur simply expressed her own concern in the manner shown:

TUR (3/30/26): While a lot of this has always just been part of who Donald Trump is—a man who works the room, seeks attention, seeks applause—he’s now about to be 80 years old, and he’s launched a war that he does not seem to have a plan for.

Based upon the highlighted statement, it seemed that Tur was voicing concern about a familiar type of cognitive decline. We refer to the type of decline which will often occurbut which often doesn't occurwhen people reached an advanced age.

Might something be wrong with the sitting president? Is it possible that he is experiencing a cognitive decline of a fairly familiar type? Is there reason to question his stability, whatever that might?

Also, is it possible that he's "insane," whatever that might mean? Was that merely colloquial speech on Cupp's part, or did Cupp mean something specific by that choice of wods?

Quite a few journalists and news orgs have called attention to the apparent oddness of the president's ramble about Sharpies last week. As far as we know, none of them have interviewed medical specialists about their alleged points of concern.

None have spoken to medical specialists about their concern! We'll leave you today with this question:

How sincere a concern is that?

On this sprawling campus, we're conducting a search for the president's health. That said, we're also conducting a maddening search for intelligent American journalism.

Should journos be speaking to medical specialists? Or are interviews with other cable figures "close enough for journalistic work?"

Tomorrow: Cognitive decline v. "mental illness"

Still coming: The intriguing essay which carried this headline:

We’ve Stopped Noticing That Trump’s Cabinet Meetings Are Completely Insane

  1. We have a madman for a president. The whole world can see it -- why Somerby can't is beyond me.

Seriously -- and I've said this before -- but I've been binge-watching the 70s BBC version of "I Claudius." with John Hurt and Derek Jacobi, and I feel like I'm watching a documentary on the inner workings of the second Trump administration. 😎

Why isn't Trump being removed? Why doesn't Somerby call for that?

    3. Removing Trump won’t accomplish much, it won’t help, and it might hurt us.

What would have helped was prosecuting Trump more vigorously, and what we should do in the future is prosecute Trump and his cronies once they are out of power.

If Dems take back the House this year, they will start laying the groundwork for that.

All eyes should be on that prize, and then we can go from there.

“For the past few years, I’ve dealt with one catastrophe after another in Ukraine,” Zelenskyy told reporters. “This has uniquely prepared me for the current conditions on the ground in the United States.”

He called Trump’s wildly contradictory statements about the war in Iran “nothing more or less than a cry for help.”

Asked whether Trump was “playing with a full deck,” Zelenskyy said, “He has no cards.”

  3. Somerby says these journalists need to bring someone medically qualified onto their show to discuss whether he is mentally competent. Would anyone call for a physician to appear on the show if Trump had fallen and broken his leg, to explain what a broken leg meant and how they knew he had broken it? I don't think so.

The problem with an equivalence between mental illness and physical injury or illness is that no competent medical professional is going to say Trump is mentally incompetent based on his behavior observed remotely via news footage. That is not how mental incompetence is diagnosed. Trump's medical staff won't disclose his actual condition. They happens, even with physical conditions -- Trump's doctors are not telling us about his physical symptoms either, and back when Trump was president and caught covid, having to be hospitalized because of the severity of his case, they didn't disclose that either, until he was recovering and able to return to the White House. This is not a transparent president.

So, what does Somerby think journalists should do? They cannot claim he has a mental illness of incapacitating condition without evidence, but no competent professional is going to diagnose him without access. They would be sued immediately, either for ethical misconduct or HIPAA violation (if they did have a chance to examine Trump).

No such concerns were offered back when everyone was claiming Biden was too old, even though he was never shown to be incompetent. Perhaps Somerby thinks we should just launch an anti-Trump campaign the way people did with Biden. The difference is that Trump will seek revenge and he is a powerful man, crazy or not, whereas Biden played by the rules. Second, Trump is not running again and there is no way to get Trump removed from office without getting his own appointed cronies to remove him, and that isn't going to happen because there is no courage on the right. Third, while everyone can see that Biden is old (because he IS old), the ability to recognize psychiatric symptoms varies and many people would not agree that what a doctor would consider a symptom actually shows incapacity. He would have to do something terrible for those on the right to agree he is a danger to himself or others (even with all the deaths he has caused).

Somerby never discusses these difficulties. We need a political solution, removal via congressional impeachment and a vote to remove. Somerby has never called for that. That makes me question his sincerity about calling Trump crazy.

It is not illegal to be crazy (assuming you break no laws in the process). It is not morally or ethically wrong to be crazy. It may be endearing to be eccentric or idiosyncratic in one's behavior. There is no rule saying a political candidate or elected official cannot also be crazy. So, we need to use Trump's actual behavior to disqualify him and remove him, but Somerby does not have the stomach for that, and he has been unwilling to discuss what Trump DOES in office as evidence of insanity. He only laughs and points at Trump's words, and there is no law saying a president must be fluent in English, or make any sense in his speeches. He doesn't even have to stay awake during meetings. Unless his name is Biden, of course. Then he must be run out of town by George Clooney and his exalted mother.

    1. Not buying your argument here. When I read this blog I clearly sense that Somerby believes the press is not doing its job regarding the reporting of Trump’s mental unfitness. As far as Biden is concerned, he could have done a better job of representing himself to the public and made more appearances to do so in unscripted environments. His people appeared to want him under wraps. If he had done so successfully the Republican claims that he was mentally unfit would not have had such traction. That was his big mistake.

      Delete
    2. 10:38: “I clearly sense that Somerby believes the press is not doing its job regarding the reporting of Trump’s mental unfitness.”

10:22 acknowledges that, but questions the value or advisability of doing that.

How is the press supposed to do this? Somerby has suggested interviewing (as he put it) “carefully selected” mental health experts.

But these experts have no special access to Trump. They merely judge, as the rest of us do, based on his words and his behavior. It’s ultimately speculation. Even Mary Trump claims there is no definitive diagnosis of Trump.

And you can bet that Fox News can find psychiatrists who praise Trump, just as his followers do, for his boldness, and how candid he is. (Just ask DiC).

I agree that Trump is a lying, grifting self aggrandizing bully, but i can see that with my own eyes. I don’t need any experts to point it out. I also see his various successes, at getting enough votes to win twice, at controlling the GOP, and carrying out massive corruption, enriching himself and his family.

Besides, Somerby contrasts Cognitive decline v. "mental illness", assuming that Trump is “mentally ill”, ie a sociopath or what have you, but in your view is sociopathy an automatic disqualification for leadership?

    3. If impeachment and conviction by Congress is what’s needed, then it seems to me that an overwhelming public support for this remedy is a necessary precondition, and a precondition for this overwhelming support is a detailed examination in the media of Trump’s mental deterioration. Which is what Somerby calls for.

Can medical specialists ethically speculate about the possible pathologies Trump may suffer from and the behaviors that may result? I don’t know.

    9. 12:14 - Yes, it was a best-seller, and soon thereafter Lee got fired from her position at Yale.

      Delete
    10. Lee was not fired by Yale. Her appointment was not renewed at Yale because she let her license to practice in CT expire, which meant she was unable to treat patients in the School of Medicine which she was affiliated with. She continues to practice in New York, where she is licensed. Her book was an issue during the renewal process in CT, because she violated professional ethics when she diagnosed Trump without having examined him. That is standard for the profession (i.e., the APA professional ethics) and in most states which model their licensing on the national professional organization.

Lee sued Yale to reinstate her but they declined because of her violation of ethical standards. Her lawsuit was dismissed. The so-called Goldwater rule is taught during training of anyone in a mental health profession.

Lee claims she was fired as retribution for speaking out against Trump and Dershowitz, but that doesn't change the rules governing responsibilities to patients.

    11. I’m old enough to have lived through Reagan having Alzheimer’s while president, and it was widely covered in the media and well known amongst the public.

But that’s not Reagan’s legacy, Reagan is revered for his rugged individualism propaganda by Republicans, but is otherwise notorious for causing chaos throughout the world and crashing our economy, as well as overseeing a deeply corrupt administration.

Trump will go down in history as our most corrupt and criminal president, his mental decline will be a side note. One hundred years from now, people won’t wonder why Trump’s mental decline wasn’t discussed more in corporate media, they’ll wonder why Republicans just shrugged and stood by while Trump bombed schools and hospitals.

Somerby is ignorant, a poor thinker, and out of touch, and this endless distraction over the precise diagnosis of Trump’s mental issues is an attempt at deflecting from the real issues. Somerby does not disagree with much of what Trump and the Republicans are doing, but he is embarrassed by the boorishness and slobbering idiocy of Trump because he recognizes that it’s bad for branding, that it’s a disaster for Republicans in the long run, and Somerby knows that his vision for America will not survive without a strong Republican Party.

In 2017 and 2018, Lee met with over 50 U.S. Congress members who considered the 25th Amendment.[20][21][22] In 2019, she held an interdisciplinary conference at the National Press Club that discussed impeachment and was broadcast by C-SPAN.

In August 2022, Mother Jones published the article "The Psychiatrist Who Warned Us That Donald Trump Would Unleash Violence Was Absolutely Right".[33] It argues that the January 6 attacks were Lee's "vindication".[34]

And btw, Somerby opposed both impeachment efforts during trump’s first term.

  4. Somerby asks: "Should journos be speaking to medical specialists?"

What makes him think they haven't already done so?

There are reasons why no journos are putting doctors on TV. He should be discussing those reasons, not pretending this is a matter of journo preference and lack of backbone.

Every time Somerby writes one of these "why haven't the doctors come with the net and white straightjacket?" essays, he leaves the right wing supports of Trumps thinking that Trump must not be crazy enough to merit such treatment -- surely the shrinks would be saying so, if Trump were really crazy, his few remaining supports think to themselves. So Somerby does a service for Trump when he pretends the left has no evidence Trump is crazy or they would be using it already.

Instead, Somerby blames the journos for Trump's ongoing behavior, when it is the job of Republicans in Congress to join their Democratic colleagues and remove this obviously fucked up, crazy sociopath from office before he kills another person. We have all had enough of this, but the power to remove Trump is Congressional, not journalistic. We can't remove him ourselves, nor can the cops, even if he takes a pistol and shoots his valet in a fit of rage. He has immunity -- remember? So JD Vance needs to grow a pair and do his job -- his must know Trump is too crazy to continue, amirite? Or Hegseth can lead a movement to take Trump down, if he had the slightest sliver of courage. But don't hold your breath. People don't become Republicans because they have qualities useful for this situation.

  5. It's worrisome that any narrative at all can be turned into common wisdom. There seems to be no limit on how unrealistic that narrative is.

A moment's thought should show what's wrong with complaining, "He’s launched a war that he does not seem to have a plan for." He not only has a clear plan, but the US has accomplished most of it in less than a month: Destroy Iran's navy. Destroy the air force. Destroy their air defenses. Destroy their missiles. Destroy their ability to continue manufacturing weapons. Destroy their nuclear capability. These are substantially accomplished. As an American, I am proud of what my country has done.

Second, war does not allow one to have a precise plan. Trump's plan for Iran is a heck of a lot more precise than FDR's was on January 7, 1943, a month after Pearl Harbor.

Now, IMO it is legitimate to question whether we should have gone to war at all. Was Iran really a big enough threat? But, given that this decision was made, it doesn't match reality to criticize the alleged lack of a plan.

Hitler, Goering, Bohrmann, and Himmler were all killed in an allied bombing attack on Hitler's headquarters, along with fifty other members of the German High Command. 95% of entire German navy is resting at the bottom of the North Sea. The Luftwaffe is no more. Allied aircraft achieved complete air superiority over Germany within 48 hours of the war's start. Still, many sophisticated commentators are saying that the Third Reich has the upper hand, because they have shut down travel through the Danish straits."

The only difference with Iran is that the evil Iranian regime really does attack ships going through the Strait whereas Israel and the UK don't do that.

    15. Not quite, @11:45. Whether to attack Iran on June 22 or on July 1 was Trump's arbitrary choice. But, the decision to attack in 2026 rather than 2027 was forced by military realities. A year from now Iran might have already built nuclear weapons, and they certainly would have created an even bigger and better store of missiles. By then, attacking Iran would probably have been out of the question. Iran would be free to become a nuclear power.

A lot of nonsense has been written about the word "imminent." IMO the reality is that failing to attack now would have amounted to allowing Iran to have nuclear weapons.
Now, one can argue that allowing Iran to have nuclear weapons wouldn't be so bad. But, it's unrealistic to imagine that these weapons could have been prevented any other way.

Iran is no angel, but it is one of the more Western and civilized countries in the region (growing a middle class, education system, literature, art), a country we helped arm back in the 80s. Noted rapist and warmonger Donald Trump lies to everyone. For his entire life, he has lied. To list his lies would be to write his biography because it is merely a series of lies, from his personal relationships to his business deals to his contracts with others to his image on his stupid TV show to his campaigns for president to his press conferences to his dealings with other countries. Every single thing is a fucking lie. He lies so much he can't keep track of what he lied about and when someone says he said one thing but now says another, he waves it off and tells a third lie and just plows ahead, ready to lie again. Joe Rogan says that he wants nothing to do with MAGA because it’s become a movement of dorks and weirdos… which is ridiculous, because it’s always been a movement of dorks and weirdos and he was just pretending otherwise to get cheap engagement in 2024.

      Rogan means you, dickhead.

    4. The odds that David in Cal publicly denies the existence of the Holocaust within the next year are down to 1:7

    5. Hey Dickhead, remember Cheney explaining why we didn't take Saddam out with Bush Sr's stupid war? He said chaos would ensue with Sunnis, Shias, and Kurds spilling blood all over the mideast. And then the fucker does it with Jr. and all his analysis comes true ten years later. Good to know idiots like you want more Jew blood spilt with the other tribal bloods. God you are a sick prick.

  9. From Tiedrich, quoting Trump:

"look at what Donny threatens to ‘obliterate’ — the ‘Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants).’

fun true fact: there’s a term for the deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure. it’s called committing war crimes — because all that shit violates international law.

I hate that we’ve normalized this shit, so let me once again point out how completely crazypants it is for a world leader to threaten a sovereign nation and promise to commit war crimes via a post on social media. no other country on the planet does this. America is now a rogue state, and an international embarrassment."

  10. More Tiedrich, about lying by other members of Trump's administration:

"look, it’s bad enough that we’ve normalized being governed by psychopaths. Donny’s an alpha-psycho, obviously. so is his piss-drunk Secretary of Death — and Liddle Marco Big-Shoes wishes he were a psychopath.

but tell me, since when is an administration’s press secretary supposed to be a psychopath?

Karoline Leavitt: “when the president says ‘more reasonable,’ again, folks are appearing more reasonable behind the scenes privately in these conversations than perhaps some of the previous who are now no longer on planet Earth because they lied to the United States and they strung us along in negotiations, and that was unacceptable to the president, which is why many of the previous leaders were killed.”

check out Karoline’s unrestrained mirth as she gleefully recounts how Iran’s leadership done got blowed up real good."

    1. And of course it’s all lies anyway, there were never any negotiations.

Americans have always had a problem with smugness, Republicans just take it to a devilish level.
