TUESDAY: Conrad had the heart of darkness!

TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 2026

We have those programs at Fox: Joseph Conrad had the realm he chose to explore in Heart of Darkness. The leading authority on the novella thumbnails it as shown

Heart of Darkness

Heart of Darkness is an 1899 novella by Polish-British novelist Joseph Conrad, in which sailor Charles Marlow tells the story of his assignment as steamer captain for a Belgian company in the African interior. The novel is widely regarded as a critique of European colonialism in Africa, whilst also examining the themes of power dynamics and morality. Although Conrad does not name the river on which most of the narrative takes place, at the time of writing, the Congo Free State—the location of the large and economically important Congo River—was a private colony of Belgium's King Leopold II. Marlow is given an assignment to find Kurtz, an ivory trader working on a trading station far up the river, who has "gone native" and is the object of Marlow's expedition.

And so on from there.

As far as we know, Heart of Darkness remains a challenging work. This week, we've been asking you to focus on a pair of Fox News Channel programs in our morning reports.

This is depressing, tiring work. It raises questions about life inside the zone known as Silo Red, but also about life inside the ramparts of Silo Blue.

This is tiring work. Or maybe it's just from setting our clocks ahead! It could always be something like that!

  1. Heart of Darkness has nothing to do with Gutfeld, Fox, or Trump. It is Somerby’s way of filling space, padding an essay about nothing. Why does he need to do this?

If Somerby is tired, he should rest, not watch Fox. A life well lived does not involve watching Gutfeld on TV, whether Somerby is red or blue. Calling our media choices “silos” adds nothing to anyone’s understanding of today’s politics.

  2. Trump, in another act of cruelty, is limiting and taxing money sent by Somalian immigrants to family in Somalia. This is money from their own paychecks sent to help family live better lives, buy food and clothes, pay rent, pay for schooling and health care. These immigrants in the US earned that pay through their own hard work, as immigrants have done for 250 years of US history. This is evil.

Somerby could call out such evil, but instead he babbles about silos. I am sending my own extra money to Clinton’s Global Initiative, as a protest against Somerby’s stupid insinuations. It is better than buying gold plated sneakers or phones that don’t work, the way the other silo does.

Sweetheart, who are you kidding? There’s not a soul in the universe who believes that you’d find Bob’s remarks on Somalis to be interesting, or accurate, or germane. That’s not in your job description.

    3. Easy to say, given that Somerby will never mention Trump's bias against Somalis, much less deplore it.

  3. Heart of Darkness was supposedly the inspiration for the plot of Apocalypse Now, the film about the Vietnam war. Perhaps Somerby is working up to some parallel with Iran bombing, but there is little similarity there historically. But that never bothers Somerby. War is war, amirite! Being tired leads to lazy pseudo-thinking, apparently. And Lincoln is just like Trump because there were blues and grays in the civil war and now we have reds and blues! Heavy, man!

  4. "President Donald Trump said the US Navy chose to sink an Iranian frigate, killing more than 100 sailors last week, because it was “more fun” than capturing the vessel, even though the ship posed no threat.

Though death tolls vary, Iran’s state media organization, the Islamic Republic News Organization, reported on Sunday that 104 crew members were killed in the attack and that 32 others were injured when a US submarine torpedoed the Iranian warship IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean on March 4 as it departed from the Milan Peace 2026 naval drills hosted in India.

The Dena was more than 2,000 miles away from the Persian Gulf when it was attacked, far from the hostilities unleashed last weekend when the US and Israel launched a war against Iran. Contradicting US claims, Iranian and Indian officials have said it was not armed."

This is a war crime, to which Trump has admitted. I am ashamed that this man is our president and that our country is engaged in such activities. This is akin to the bombing of the girls school. This is evil.

    1. @5:30 - Some people's definition of "war crime" is "an act committed by the US or Israel." I don't see you complaining about a whole laundry list of atrocious acts
-- Massacring, raping, kidnapping, and torturing 1000 innocent civilians at a music festival.
-- Sending missiles to attack non-military targets in a bunch of countries.
-- Killing 3200 of their own citizens who are out demonstrating
      - Using one's own citizens as human shields by intentionally putting military installations in civilian areas.
-- Putting military installations in hospitals and schools

    2. There is international law defining war crimes. This is not a matter of political opinion. I hope Trump is eventually tried in the Hague (international court) and put in prison. Other people's crimes do not excuse Trump.

    3. David in Cal, who would like you to believe comparing Israel's actions against Palestinians with the actions of the Iran is anti-semitism, is just asking you to compare Israel's actions against Palestinians with the actions of Iran.
      Is that so bad?

    4. Any nation like Iran, who believe "border security allows us to kill our own citizens who question government agents" should be bombed into the stone age.

    5. Yes, that justifies killing 120 school girls.

    6. @5:48 - Are you aware that in WW2 the US sank innumerable Japanese non-military ships. Are FDR and HST war criminals?

    7. We are not at war with Iran.

    8. David -- Yes, that would've been considered war crimes under the Geneva convention, which was signed in 1949.

    9. Surely, dickhead must be referring to the Second World Excursion

    10. Ilya - AI disagrees with you
The Geneva Conventions do not specifically ban the sinking of non-military ships, but they establish rules for the treatment of shipwrecked individuals and require parties to a conflict to assist survivors. Violating these rules can constitute a war crime if the obligations to rescue and care for the wounded and shipwrecked are not met.

  7. Heart of Darkness was about the contrast between the beautiful world women imagined, and men trying to preserve their illusions. Conrad would be rolling in his grave if he knew the shit world liberal women have actually created once liberal men abdicated.
