DIAGNOSIS: O'Donnell recalls a better day!

THURSDAY, APRIL 16, 2026

Why doesn't he do this now? Last evening, in his opening monologue on The Last Word, Lawrence O'Donnell recalled a (slightly) more forthright day.

In the course of his monologue, he made several glancing references to Peter Baker's recent front-page essay for the New York Times. Headline included, we recall the most interesting part of Baker's thumb-sucker pseudo-report:

Trump’s Erratic Behavior and Extreme Comments Revive Mental Health Debate

[...]

Mr. Trump’s stability has been a recurring issue since he first sought the presidency in 2016. Numerous psychiatrists and other mental health professionals have weighed in with their own opinions even without the opportunity to evaluate him. John F. Kelly, his longest serving White House chief of staff in the first term, even bought a book by 27 of those specialists called “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump,” in an effort to understand his boss and came to the conclusion that he was mentally ill.

It's true! Way back in 2017, Yale psychiatrist Dr. Bandy X. Lee edited a best-selling book with that very title.

In line with an ancient guild tradition, the Times disappeared Dr. Lee's book at that time. In his lengthy essay for the Times, Baker maintained a version of that tradition, as we noted in yesterday's report.

Sad! In his lengthy report for the Times, Baker didn't quote any of the 27 medical specialists who contributed to Dr. Lee's book. Instead, he offered a fuzzy, weirdly unsourced account of what General Kelly allegedly concluded upon reading the best-selling book.

Twenty-seven medical specialists were thereby kicked to the curb. Readers were offered only the alleged assessment of General Kelly, who's highly regarded for his integrity but isn't a medical specialist!

So it goes as journalistic children like Baker take their crayons and continue to color within the lines. Last evening, a form of this refusal to serve was present for the world to see at the start of The Last Word

Is it possible? Is it possible that President Trump is suffering from certain forms of mental illness which may, in fact, be immensely dangerous?

It seems to us that the obvious (possible) answer is yes! But then, we aren't medical specialists either, any more than General Kelly (or Lawrence O'Donnell) is.

Early in last evening monologue, O'Donnell recalled a better day. He recalled the time when he was willing to interview medical specialists about the president's mental health.

It's been years since MSNBC / MS NOW presented transcripts of their primetime "cable news" programs. They suspended that practice years ago, we presume for the obvious reason.

For that reason, we can't direct you to a transcript of O'Donnell's monologue last night. But thanks to this videotape, you can watch the monologueand at roughly 10:05 p.m., you'll see O'Donnell say this:

O'DONNELL (4/15/26): If Donald Trump ever did talk to people that are "deep into the psychological world," he is just statistically likely to be speaking to someone who thinks Donald Trump has very serious mental problems, as described in the book, The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump, which was featured on the program in the first year of Donald Trump's first presidency.

As he continued, O'Donnell described the overall structure of that long-ignored book. He then recalled the way his own program occasionally functioned, way back when The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump appeared:

O'DONNELL: In his very first appearance on this program, in the second month of Donald Trump's presidency, ten years ago, former Harvard Medical School professor Dr. Lance Dodes said this:

DR. DODES (videotape, 2017): Lying in the way he does itrepeated, dangerous lyingmakes him unfit and is a sign of serious mental disturbance...

Serious mental disturbance! The fact that he said it doesn't mean that it's right. But that's what Dr. Dodes said on the air, in prime time,, way back in 2017.

Dr. Dodes was one of the contributors to Dr. Lee's disappeared book. As you can see if you watch the tape of last evening's show, that statement by Dr. Dodes went on at some length from there.

Soon, though, you'll see O'Donnell present a more significant statement by Dr. Dodesa statement from January 2021:

O'DONNELL: Professor Dodes returned to this program three days after the January 6th attack and said this:

DR. DODES (videotape, 2021): A delusional psychopath who has been the same his whole adult life, and who we knew would get worse the more stress he was under, because that's what happens with people with this kind of severe disorder. ...He is going to continue to get worse.

He is going to continue to get worse! That's what the experienced specialist said!

There's a great deal more to what Dr. Dodes said that day. We'll suggest that you watch the tape of last night's program to see his fuller statementhis fuller statement from January 2021.

That said:

He is going to continue to get worse, the medical specialist said at that time.

Many people seem to think that some such downward spiral is now underwayand five years later, in late February of this very year, a second medical specialist went on CNN in prime time and said this:

ERIN BURNETT (2/26/26): You've known him your whole life. Do you actually see a [cognitive] decline?

MARY L. TRUMP: I do, but I think it's important to remember that Donald has never been fit in any capacity. Obviously, what we're dealing with now are age-related cognitive declines. We're dealing with physical issues that the White House tries to cover over.

But this is somebody who for decades now has had serious, undiagnosed and untreated psychiatric disorders, which are only going to worsen, especially given the pressure he's under and given the cognitive and physical declines.

The fact that she said it doesn't mean that it's true. But her famous uncle's medical problems "are only going to worsen," this second specialist said.

Under the circumstances, that sounds like an extremely dangerous state of affairs. And yet, how strange!

From that day to this, we've seen no one say a word about what Mary L. Trump said on CNN that night. Any by the way, Lawrence O'Donnell no longer interviews medical specialists about the president's medical / mental condition.

Back then, O'Donnell would (occasionally) speak with Dr. Dodes. But those days are long, long gone.

Last evening, O'Donnell recalled an earlier daya time when he would actually interview actual medical specialists right there on The Last Word. The following fact went unexplained:

At the New York Times, and on The Last Word, those days are long, long gone!

Tomorrow: An imitation of journalism, an imitation of life

  1. Should Baker include the opinions of 27 medial specialists who say Trump is nuts? I don't think so. These 27 were cherry-picked -- specifically chosen because they're willing to say Trump is nuts. No doubt there are also thousands of medical specialists who would say that Trump is perfectly sane. And, there are even more who would say that no diagnosis could be made without speaking with Trump.

      Speaking of thousands:

“The psychologist [Johns Hopkins University psychologist John Gartner] founded a professional organization called Duty to Warn at the beginning of Trump’s first presidency. It attracted more than 60.000 doctors, 27 of whom authored a best-selling book.”

“In the first months of 2017, Gartner collected the signatures of more than 25,000 mental health professionals. The petition, "Mental Health Professionals Declare Trump is Mentally Ill And Must Be Removed", was sent to the Minority leader, Senator Chuck Schumer of New York. At the end of April 2017, Gartner sent the petition to Washington D.C., with more than 41,000 signatures.”

    7. The point is that those saying anything about Trump's mental health without examining him are violating their professional ethics. If a complaint were filed with their licensing boards, they could lose the ability to practice. Duty to warn refers to mental health practitioners who find signs of intended violence against others while examining a patient. Remote diagnosis of media figures is explicitly forbidden. That is what these professionals have done in their book.

If Trump's own doctor came forward and warned the nation of Trump's danger to others based on his examination of Trump, that would be something Schumer could act on, as could Vance and others with the authority to address Trump's menace.

Referring to Trump's incompetence at the beginning of his first term, after he just won election by the voters, was ill-timed because too many people would be inclined to give him a chance to show his ability in office.

Mental illness is not, by itself, a qualification or disqualification for office. Many people with diagnosed illnesses (such as schizophrenia or major depression or OCD) take medication and are able to hold responsible jobs and lead normal lives with treatment. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a person would have to be shown to be incompetent in order to be dismissed due to mental illness. That applies to Trump too. I think Schumer was right to adhere to the law by not trying to throw Trump out of office without a bill of particulars for his failures and endangerment of the people. The failure of Congress to remove Trump after his two impeachments places the blame on Republicans for Trump's current malfeasance, not on Schumer or Baker or anyone else "coloring within the lines".

Some of us still care about the law to the point of applying it to Trump, even when he doesn't deserve mercy. If we abandon the law, even to fight a threat like Trump, we destroy our own country by failure to defend democracy and our system of laws. If we really mean that no one is above the law, we must also admit that even Trump must be treated according to our laws, or our system will lose its value to every one of us.

  4. "Baker didn't quote any of the 27 medical specialists who contributed to Dr. Lee's book. Instead, he offered a fuzzy, weirdly unsourced account of what General Kelly allegedly concluded upon reading the best-selling book. "

None of those specialists had access to Trump and none had evaluated him using the appropriate assessment tools of their profession. General Kelly had the advantage of having close access to Trump and watching his daily behavior. It is right that Baker should give greater weight to Kelly's opinions and not those of Bandy Lee, who not only violated her professional ethics to write that book, but also had no first-hand opportunity to evaluate Trump, only media accounts and snippets of video from the press.

By now, enough people who have encountered Trump in real life, not just read about his behavior, are concerned about his performance. Bandy Lee's analysis is obsolete because it is now out of date (even if their book was updated). Trump has changed even since his first term.

Somerby has never understood that there are specialties within psychiatry too. Bandy Lee is a forensic psychiatrist, so she examines criminals. AI says: "Bandy X. Lee is a forensic psychiatrist and expert on violence prevention who, for over two decades, has consulted on prison reform, taught at Yale and Harvard, and specialized in diagnosing violence risk in criminal cases. She is best known for applying public health strategies to violence, leading global initiatives, and advocating for the mental health assessment of political leaders." Trump now requires a neuropsychologist to evaluate whether he has dementia -- that is not Bandy Lee's field. I am surprised that Bandy Lee did not focus on Trump's crimes and discuss his propensity for violence, given the latest invasions of countries on pretexts and his sexual abuse and financial crimes. I agree with Lee that politicians should be evaluated for their likelihood of committing abuse of power and insider trading crimes while in office.

    There is no point in

  6. "So it goes as journalistic children like Baker take their crayons and continue to color within the lines. "

Baker holds a different opinion than Somerby. How does that make him a child, much less one who commits the crime of coloring WITHIN the lines instead of outside them?

Whose lines does Somerby color within to keep Baker's concerns sidelined in favor of Bandy Lee's obvious political attack on Trump, lacking specifics and independent of any specific claims about Trump's misbehavior other than her inutition?

Somerby dismissed the two impeachments of Trump, arguing that they set aside the will of the voters. Yes, Baker wants to work within the system to remove Trump, but that should be possible given the severity of Trump's actions. As long as Somerby argues for extra-legal means to remove Trump, he can be sure nothing will happen to Dear Leader and his opponents who take Bandy Lee's approach will be themselves impeachable because they function outside the system without the facts to make their case.

  7. The best thing about the parade of evidence of Trump's decline reported by the media daily is that prospective voters can see how wrong Trump's behavior is, especially for a president. They are leaving Trump's side in droves, some becoming Democrats and others becoming Independents. If Trump doesn't become too ill to continue in office, or he dies, or he resigns, these observers of Trump's actions will not be supporting the Republican Party any more and they will be wiser about the next guy who runs from the right.

This isn't only about Trump. Trump has ruined Vance's political future, as well as that of anyone who has ever worked for him. Trump is providing a moment of opportunity for Democrats and non-MAGA candidates, much as occurred after George W. Bush's screwups. We got Obama after that, and Biden did an excellent job during Covid while cleaning up Trump's first mess. There may be a chance for real change once Trump is gone, such as changes in campaign financing, addressing income inequality and universal health care, promotion of EVs and alternative energy (which is one of Trump's pet targets and thus will be seen as important to all who revile Trump).

We don't need Bandy Lee for this. It is tempting to promote whoever oppose Trump, but Bandy Lee and others like her do not have the tools to take Trump down -- the people must do that through elected officials. Violating ethics the way Somerby and Lee keep wanting to do, is not the way to remove Trump. We can do better.

  8. Somerby is a huge coward. He obliquely refers to coloring outside of the lines while being afraid to call for Trump to be removed "by any means necessary." We all saw what happened to Charlie Kirk. Trump is vulnerable to such children coloring outside those lines too. Baker is respecting the lines. For that, I respect him way more than I do Somerby. Somerby has never had the courage to examine the most serious of Trump's crimes and call for justice. Trump is building an authoritarian regime to prosecute those who write nasty emails against him. The time to prevent that is now, but Somerby attacks Trump's critics instead, starting with Baker, who is right to focus on Trump's misbehavior not his personality.

It is ridiculous that Somerby applies some sort of purity test to those like Baker who criticize Trump, while blaming the left for recognizing how bad Trump is, but then extolling Bandy Lee, who lost her license for trying to warn the public that Trump shouldn't have been elected. Bandy Lee and Mary Trump have done their best but been unsuccessful in getting Trump removed. We need a different approach, one that Somerby will not support, perhaps because it might actually work.
