WEDNESDAY: Virginia redistricting by the numbers!

 WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22, 2026

Virginia is for questions: These were the vote totals on Virginia's (temporary) redistricting:

In favor of (temporary) redistricting: 51.5%
Opposed to (temporary) redistricting: 48.5%

The (temporary) measure squeaked through by a fairly narrow three points.

Virginia's current House delegation looks like this:

Democrats: 6
Republicans: 5

In theory, the new districts trend like this:

Democrats: 10
Republicans: 1

Plainly, that looks like a major (temporary) change. Now, for a pair of questions:

Will Democrats really win ten seats in Virginia this fall? Also, was so severe a (temporary) gerrymander really a good idea?

Virginia Democrats went for broke, though only on a temporary basis. In the long run, was this a good idea? For example, would 8-3 have been enough of a temporary redistricting?

In the long run, was this a good idea? That may be a later discussion as our nation (hopefully) tries to recover from the partisan body blows of the past too many years.

Also, our apologies: Distracted by a bureaucratic matter, we accidentally forgot to post this morning's main report!

  1. Our country elected Trump twice and Somerby has to ask whether the gerrymander vote was a good idea? Seriously!?

  2. Somerby is pretending that the Republicans hadn’t already been gerrymandering to benefit themselves. That’s just dishonest.

  3. These midterms AND 2028 are going to be Democratic landslides. I don’t know how long it will take the voters to forgive Republicans. Maybe a generation or two.

  4. Who does Somerby think will be pissed off by Democrats winning, besides the Trump crime syndicate. Somerby thinks we’re supposed to shake in our books and worry that the red voters will be mad at us, while we’re liberating the country and restoring prosperity by kicking Trump and his enablers to the curb.

Buttt…what if JD and Kash don’t like us? Maybe we should rethink democracy and ask their permission to restore the vote to all, even Democrats! How does Somerby think Trump got elected, if not by cheating in the first place?

  5. 10-1 is better than 8-3.
Did Somerby go to Trump University?

  6. Gavin Newsom explains why the Virginia results are important and what happens next:

“ What a night in Virginia!

We keep saying that when we fight fire with fire -- when Democrats go on offense -- we win.

We proved that in California, where the Election Rigging Response Act started as a close race and ended in a blowout, and we proved it last night in Virginia.

Right now, Democrats are winning all across the United States. We're winning in state houses, in courthouses, and now in the court of public opinion.

But what is at stake going forward is putting a stake in the heart of the Trump administration by taking back the House of Representatives and taking back the United States Senate.

Because if we can do that, we can effectively end the Trump presidency two years before he leaves office.

MAGA is losing at their own game.

They are on the defense, but we cannot stop now. We can rout them in November's elections if everyone does what they can to make it happen.

All eyes are on Florida next, where Republicans have threatened to redraw their maps. We have to try and stop them -- and if they do redraw the maps, we have to make them pay by flipping the seats they made closer.”

  7. A professional member of the media who isn't on the take for the Right:
"President Trump commented about ______________ , today, but we won't be printing it until it can be verified."

Let Trump cry into the ether.

  8. Why is clemency for Ghislaine Maxwell even being discussed by the House?

  9. Breaking News! Somerby isn’t sure Democrats should ever win anything.

“Was so severe a (temporary) gerrymander really a good idea?” Somerby suggests. What liberal is wasting even one tiny brain cell on such a question today — because Trump is an abomination. Only Somerby sucks the pulp out of a Democratic win with such stupidity. This proves he is batting for the reds because only they are that stupid.
