...for a very long time: In our own view, Greg Gutfeld, 61 years old, is a person who needs some help.
We'd even say the fellow deserves some help, along with all members of struggling / suffering humanity.
We'd say the fellow needs some help because we watch his primetime imitation of a "cable news" program on the Fox News Channel. With apologies for posting his words again, we'd say a grubby little mutt like this could plainly use some help:
GUTFELD (6/23/26): In economic news, Nancy Pelosi's net worth is down $8 million.
Worse, her boobs are down nine inches.
PHOTO: [Pelosi in bathing suit]
Remarkable! When a 61-year-old fellow offers such jokes, we'd say he's badly in need of help, as are the corporate cretins who pay him $9 million per year to go on TV and behave like that.
(Blue America's stars refuse to discuss this behavior—Rachel and Lawrence and all the rest. This is the nation-devouring garbage they too have apparently chosen.)
We'd say he could use some help. We'd also make that assessment based on Neal Gabler's report.
Gabler's report appeared in The Nation—in October 2012! The squalor of an ailing person like Gutfeld has been with us for a long time:
What’s Behind the Right’s ‘Obama Is Gay’ Conspiracy
You probably know by now that President Obama is a Muslim who professes socialism and that he was born in Africa, which makes him ineligible to occupy our highest office. But here is something you may not know: Obama is gay. Not only is he gay; he frequented gay bath houses in Chicago along with his former chief of staff and current Chicago mayor, Rahm Emanuel. And not only did he frequent those bath houses; he was under the influence of a “transgender nanny” when he lived as a boy in Indonesia...
And on and on from there.
The sickness was already quite widespread as of 2012. Gabler's third paragraph went like this:
Citing a remark by Fox News host Greg Gutfeld that “Obama is now out of the closet” after the president announced his support for gay marriage, former George W. Bush speechwriter David Frum blogged at the Daily Beast, “You cannot ‘get’ Gutfeld’s joke unless you ‘get’ that a large part of his audience ardently believes that Obama is in fact gay, that his marriage is a sham, and that Mrs. Obama leads a life of Marie Antoinette–like extravagance to compensate for her husband’s neglect while he disports himself with his personal aides.”
In the minds of many under-developed souls, Barack Obama, the sitting American president, was already gay! On the brighter side:
Based on Frum's remarks about Gutfeld's "joke," it may be that Michelle Obama wasn't yet being scored as a man.
(As we noted yesterday, that second soul-draining theme may have started with Joan Rivers in 2014. At the very least, it got a wide airing there.)
Was Gutfeld just kidding—was he just speaking metaphorically—when he made the quoted remark? If so, he's truly come a long way! Here he was, sharing his marvelous humor, on his primetime "cable news" show in April of last year:
GUTFELD (4/10/25): And finally, Michelle Obama openly admitted that she and Barack sleep in separate bedrooms.
Here's how it works. She sleeps downstairs, and he likes men.
The former president likes men! Surrounded by panels of defectives—knowing that no Blue American star will ever say boo about his behavior—the creepy crawler sustains this messaging on a regular basis.
He messages millions of people each night. Along the way, a second bit of messaging had already been folded in, and his audience knew what it was:
GUTFELD (2/21/25): Divorce rumors continue to escalate for the Obamas.
Hopefully, they can settle it like men.
AUDIENCE: [Laughter, applause]
GUTFELD: Terrible! It's terrible that you would applaud that!
The studio audience knew what the termagant was saying. Hiding behind one of his several beards, the cowardly fellow pretended to scold them for applauding his pitiful slime.
In our view, this cable star could use some help, as could our failing nation. On our third most-watched "cable news" program—his ratings dwarf those of MS NOW—the creeper continues to toy with this bit of twinned messaging:
Barack Obama is secretly gay. Michelle Obama's a man.
This deeply strange man and his cast of defectives routinely traffic those messages, along with a long, extremely ugly list of other themes.
As a manifest nutcase, he can't stop talking about the way [NAME WITHHELD] likes to shove gerbils up his asp. He pictures Joe Biden in his grave. And several women, not Michelle Obama alone, are said to be secretly men.
Absent help, this seems to be the best this manifest nutcase can do. Suzanne Scott makes money off this. Rachel and Lawrence and David French all refuse to report and discuss it.
(Bret Stephens doesn't seem to watch Fox. Nicolle Wallace keeps her mouth shut too.)
Two Sundays ago, on June 14, a UFC fighter blurted it out, right there on the White House lawn. We'll guess that he doesn't know any better, but here's what he happily screamed:
"Michelle Obama is a man! Am I right, America?"
No, you can't get dumber than that. But waste meat like Gutfeld will try, enabled by willing panelists.
"Michelle Obama is a man," the hapless UFC fighter screamed. Perhaps because of the venue in question, Blue Americans finally complained.
On Monday evening, June 15, Senator Warnock went on The Last Word and said the conduct was racist.
"This is bigotry," the senator said. "This is evil come alive in the world."
Senator Warnock is a good, decent person. So is Maya Wiley.
On Tuesday, June 16, Wiley appeared on Deadline: White House. "Let me start by saying this," she told Nicolle Wallace. "This is racist."
"It's bigotry," she later said. "And it must be called out for that."
The moral and intellectual squalor in question has been underway for a long time. But is it clear that it's mainly racist? Is it clear that it's racist at all?
Is it clear that this squalor is based upon race? And is it possible that we Blues may be hurting Blue prospects—in this and perhaps in other circumstances—by insisting on that potent theme?
Something's happening here, Dylan famously said. Are we sure that we know what it is?
Tomorrow: At the tender age of 13, she was described as a dog
He’s too busy making multiple millions of dollars serving the corporate interests of Fox and the GOP to worry about seeking help.
ReplyDeleteSaying that Gutfeld needs help is no different than saying that Trump is mentally ill and needs help. Both are intended to excuse these right wing creeps for their bad behavior by portraying them as incapable of being good decent human beings.
DeleteIf Trump has dementia, he needs to be removed from office ASAP because he is a danger to himself and others. Gutfeld is a different matter, because one must wonder why so many people watch his show if what he does is so obviously crackpot. Why does Somerby never blame Gutfeld's audience for their tolerance of his misbehavior? For that matter, why are Republicans not being held accountable for Trump's current crimes and misdemeanors? The biggest vandal of all has destroyed the Lincoln Reflecting Pool and he is still in office thinking up new ways to destroy other monuments. Why?
Meanwhile Somerby repeats a joke about Nancy Pelosi's boobs drooping (she is 86). Earth to Somerby, ALL women's boobs droop at that age, unless they have fake implants like the Mar a Lago denizens. Gutfeld's jokes are not ugly because it talks about droopy boobs, but because of Gutfeld's obvious hatred of Nancy Pelosi, his desire to hurt her. Somerby never mentions that, never speculates about whether gratuitous verbal attacks on out-of-office elderly politicians are OK or an indicator of something wrong with Republicans who laugh at such jokes.
Democrats used to ask why Republicans hate us so much. We don't do that any more because it is pretty obvious that Republicans carry around a lot of free-floating hatred that they enjoy being given permission to vent. They have become the party of hate. Given that circumstance, arguing about whether hating women is worse than hating blacks, or vice versa, makes no sense at all. The hate is the point.
Was it worse for Hitler to kill Jews, Roma or gays? Somerby asks that question today by suggesting hatred of Michele can't be racist if she is hated for being a strong woman. Does Somerby never listen to himself? He has become a moron.
DeleteGutfeld makes about $9 million per year. That is 1/3 of what Tucker Carlson was paid and less than half what Rachel Maddow was paid. For that lower salary, he does twice as much work. On the other hand, he doesn't appear on any of his shows alone.
DeleteSomerby says:
"we'd say a grubby little mutt like this could plainly use some help"
Notice how Somerby's adjectives have nothing to do with his performance on air but refer to his size and cleanliness and pedigree (a mutt comes from a diverse background). Why doesn't Somerby tell his readers what is really wrong with Gutfeld. He is a racist, sexist hate monger whose "jokes" are unfunny. But if Somerby did that, he couldn't later say that racism and sexism are dead, because look at Gutfeld spewing the racist and sexist hate freely every day. Does Somerby think that boob joke is aimed at men or intended as a compliment? Why does Somerby never use adjectives that call out Gutfeld for what he does? Obviously, because it would interfere with Somerby's dual claims that the left never objects to Gutfeld and it uses antiquated terms like sexist and racist that are off-putting to prospective voters, especially the Others. Apparently Somerby thinks we Blues are supposed to object to Gutfeld's muttyness, not his hate speech.
The traits Somerby mentions in Gutfeld are very similar to the things people say about immigrants and poor people. And they are very close to the stereotypes of Jews, missing only the big nose. It is clear Somerby thinks Gutfeld hasn't earned his money. In his attempt to avoid calling out the actual sexism and racism inherent in Gutfeld's routine, Somerby has perhaps subconsciously reverted to anti-Semitic tropes of his childhood, when maligning Jews openly was as socially acceptable as black hate speech and stereotypes of women.
The solution, obviously, is to stick to actual criticisms and avoid the name-calling. But to do that, Somerby would have to say what is wrong with Gutfeld's act.
As a fan of middle alliteration, I thought “grubby little mutt” was splendiferous.
DeleteBut so it goes with Trump’s taint-lickers, a special group of which 2:05 is obviously a member. After all, it said at one point that we should all aspire to be better followers, a claim so remarkably worthy of mockery that I did so at the time. Now, I just feel sad.
I would suggest that 2:05 find a blog that they can follow without unresolved bitterness. Please, be a better follower by going away.
Leroy
Leroy, I’d be glad to lick your taint.
Delete“Is it clear that it's racist at all?”
ReplyDeleteLet us parse the statement into its subatomic constituents to conclude what? Calling a (black) woman who identifies as a woman a man is misogynist, not racist, and it’s, what?, much more acceptable for liberals to launch their “m” (misogyny) bombs than their “r” (racist) bombs? Even if racist attacks on the obamas are part of our national discourse and part of the current right wing meme-sphere, do right wingers get less offended being called misogynist than racist?
I think you miss the point. If someone calls Michelle a “man,” that’s a sexist slur. If you call it a “racial” slur, you’ll be diverted into an irrelevant argument (“Is it really racist?”) that you’ll fight on unfavorable grounds.
DeleteIs there any doubt that the fucking droidhead is a racist bastard?
DeleteIf you call a black person lazy, does that slur become non-racist simply by claiming you are discussing their energy level? Of course not. What makes slurs racist is bundling up a bunch of them and applying them to black people as a stereotype, singling out black people for negative attention by focusing criticism on them over things that are the same in white people.
DeleteThe stupidity of these attacks on the Obamas, who are no longer in politics and did a good job when they were politicians, is what makes these attacks racist, not their content.
So, arguing over whether a remark is misogynist or racist is stupid, because the remarks are both. What makes these things racist is: (1) the untruth of the remarks, (2) the gratuitous targeting of someone who is irrelevant to politics, (3) the hate exhibited by the speaker, (4) the diminishment of a black person by applying negatives to them on the basis of race not their own attributes or behavior.
Somerby's attempts to portray this targeting of the Obamas as not racist is itself racist.
The Obamas are not harmed by these insults. They have their many accomplishments to contradict the idiocies being aimed at them. They don't care if anyone thinks Michelle is a man or Obama is gay. Who does care? The black community in general, because people see that blatant racism and falsehoods can be spoken about even eminent black people with impunity, without repercussions, tolerated by our society and allowed to stand by those who should object. That assault on all black people, the reminder that bigots can behave badly at will, that is the harm being done to all black people, but especially those who admire the Obamas and those with hopes of joining the mainstream and being taken seriously. Black kids seeking role models are harmed. You would think that Somerby would understand that. Instead, he argues that there was no foul involved.
Blue America always objects to this stuff. Somerby identifies some arbitrary member of what he calls the Blue press, and then claims they don't object enough. Is he trying to portray blues as hypocrites, or is he saying it is OK to slime the Obamas because Blues are tolerating it (by not objecting loudly enough) or is he saying racism is over because blues don't care and are just being performance when we object?
Hard to know what Somerby's point is, except that he is attacking Blue America again, attacking the idea that racism and sexism should be opposed, and repeating Gutfeld's mud slinging again.
Here are some of the racist caricatures aimed at Michelle Obama:
Deletehttps://jimcrowmuseum.ferris.edu/antiblack/sapphire.htm
Be sure to read the whole section about how Michele Obama is being portrayed and how that relates to stereotypical images of black women in African American history. Calling her a man instead of an angry mannish woman is a short step and incorporates all of the aspects of the Sapphire image.
Arguing about whether it is misogynistic to insult a black woman is a distraction when the point of both racism and sexism is to cut that woman down to size and show dominance, in this case by white men.
Meanwhile, there is a topic within feminist writing and philosophy that deals with intersectionality. That refers to the interaction and overlap between different traits of a person and contextual elements of their lives, including not just gender and race but also religion, economic and social class, ethnicity and national origin, and so on. Race, class, and sexism exist together and interact, so that a white upper woman may experience sexism and gender identity differently than a poor black woman, differently than a rich black woman, differently than a black woman with high social status, such as Oprah for example. Race and sex or gender are not experienced independently and do not occur distinct from each other for any of us.
AI says:
"Intersectionality is a framework explaining how overlapping social identities—particularly race and gender—interact to create unique, compounded experiences of discrimination or privilege. Coined by scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw, it shows that the struggles of marginalized groups cannot be fully understood by looking at a single identity in isolation."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersectionality
DG, the right hates Michele because she is black AND because she violates gender norms as a woman AND because she is a Democrat married to a black president who served two terms in office and is still considered an excellent president AND because Trump supporters willingly hate whoever Trump hates.
DeleteAnd presto! An irrelevant argument about racism distracting from the clear sexism of the slur. And that’s just among us Blues.
DeleteDG, what part of the discussion of intersectionality did you not understand?
DeleteIf someone says that welfare recipients all drive Cadillacs, does that make the discussion about cars and not a racial slur?
There is no competition between racism and sexism. It is not either/or but both. Further, you do not define the topics in comments.
Somerby only discusses sexism to beat up on blue America.
Politically, it's a mistake to make racism a focus of criticism against him. And there's like 10 million other things that are not politically disadvantageous. So why focus on the one thing that hurts you and doesn't help you?
DeleteJust asking rhetorically. At this point it's obvious you can't help yourself. Self-defeating behavior is just interesting to watch sociologically.
DeleteThanks for your concern, 2:19.
DeleteHere is Somerby's headline today:
Delete"RACE: Our nation's dead souls have been pimping this swill..."
Doesn't this imply that Somerby himself introduced the topic of race in today's essay, making it non-irrelevant?
The problem with the headline is that the words "swill" and "dead souls" who are pimping it, both seem to relate back to RACE, especially since this is the headline and nothing else has been said yet.
Is discussion of race swill and are the people who discuss race peddling swill (as a conman peddles falsehoods) really dead souls? Those of us on the left who are concerned about racism are trying to improve conditons for minorities in our society, not trying to get anyone to buy anything. We do not have dead souls. That phrase applies to the evil men and women in Trump's administration who are committing evil acts for financial gain.
So who is Somerby insulting today? Anti-racists are do-gooders on the left who want a better society. Their methods produced measurable improvement before Trump was elected. It is hard to argue that conditions for minorities did not improve during a succession of Democratic presidencies. So, calling anti-racist activities self-defeating is factually wrong.
The bulk of the article is a criticism of Gutfeld, but Somerby never does clarify who he means when he refers to swill and dead souls (Gutfeld is one man).
Somerby concludes with this:
"The moral and intellectual squalor in question has been underway for a long time. But is it clear that it's mainly racist? Is it clear that it's racist at all?
Is it clear that this squalor is based upon race? And is it possible that we Blues may be hurting Blue prospects—in this and perhaps in other circumstances—by insisting on that potent theme?"
He seems to imply that if Gutfeld tells some sexist jokes along with the racist ones, that maybe the racism isn't there. That is plainly wrong because the right and Gutfeld tell both racist and sexist jokes, because they embrace many kinds of bigotry, none of which are mutually exclusive.
We Blues have principles. Abandoning them, as Republicans have abandoned their own, would not benefit us because we would lose our constituency. Further, those of us who are Blue because we want to defeat sexism, racism and other forms of bigotry would abandon the Democratic party if they were to become as craven as the right.
The problem with our country is Trump and those who enable him. Trump needs to be removed from office. I have never heard Somerby acknowledge that, among his many attacks on Blue America. Today he issues another call to stop talking about race. That isn't going to happen. We Blues don't want to abandon our values. When Trump is gone, our nation will be run by more Blue elected officials and we will return to the DEI measures Trump destroyed and go about restoring our nation's former prosperity for all. Those who oppose this are the ones with dead souls. Obviously, that includes Somerby, who cannot see the racism in targeting the Obamas because the slurs were about gender and sexual orientation.
So, 2;19 votes for misogyny, not racism. Does that make right wingers happier?
DeleteA focus of criticism against whom? Gutfeld? Trump?
DeleteWhen people say sssshhhhhhh... don't mention racism or you'll upset the racists, that is being racist. Pretending there is no racism by ignoring it, even when you know it exists, is cowardly and does nothing at all to reduce the racism in our society.
One way to oppose racism is to bring it into the open and make it explicit. This idea that appeasing the right leads to benefits for the left is demonstrably wrong. The right is shameless, acknowledges no debts, and will become more outrageous in its behavior if it is not opposed.
Yesterday, Trump declined to sign a bipartisan housing bill because the Senate has not passed his vote-suppression bill (SAVE Act). This is the same situation as when Biden negotiated a bipartisan immigration act and Trump instructed his Congress members to torpedo it because he wanted to run on the issue (saying that Biden did nothing about the border). Republicans do not honor agreements to produce bipartisan solutions to problems when it doesn't suit their political goals (which are Trump's).
There is no reason to believe that racists will do fewer destructive things to minorities if we Blues are nice to The Others and talk in whispers about racism. Look what they did to anti-racist measures the minute Trump got into office! The fact that Somerby keeps pushing this argument is a major sign of his own racism.
"A focus of criticism against whom?" Trump.
Delete"Doesn't this imply that Somerby himself introduced the topic of race in today's essay, making it non-irrelevant?"
No one said the issue is non-irrelevant.
But definitely play the race card all you want. Let me know how it works out for you. ;)
DeleteThe Right takes their bigotry where they can find it.
Delete2:14 - Sorry I’m late, but do you see how the argument degenerated into “intersectionality”? Here’s a pro tip: If you use that word, you’ve lost. That’s one of the behaviors that drive normal people to vote Red.
DeleteOr you could be an idiot and frame this as either racism or sexism, as Somerby has done. And you think “both” is irrelevant. That’s makes you the biggest loser.
DeleteGo on. Scold the “sexist” and “racist” “bigots” about “intersectionality.” See how many respond: “Oh, now I see the light! Now I’m going to vote a straight Democratic ticket!”
DeleteWill never work, dg, they have no fucking shame
DeleteLectures about intersectionality come strictly from from an entitled, upper-middle-class point of view.
DeleteWhat do all the Latin American maids cleaning the houses of the rich feminists who are writing about intersectionality have to say about the topic? Not much.
"Latin American maids".
DeleteSeriously, what kind of un-American asshole would have a problem with immigrants?
"Intersectionality" is a concept on par with "Latin X". Utter folderol handed down from an ivory tower.
Delete“Obama is gay” is homophobic, because it is meant as mockery; “that’s so gay” said six year olds a few years ago. It’s bigoted, because merely calling someone gay is meant to demean them.
ReplyDeleteWorld on fire, Trump can't finish a thought, and Someday is on the daily repeating Gutfield's slurs on a President and his wife who has been out of office for ten years.
ReplyDeleteMoreover, Schiltz linked the subpoenas to what he called “the Trump administration’s well-established history of using criminal investigations to retaliate against and pressure the President’s political and personal adversaries.” Schiltz pointed to the recent investigation of Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell, in which another federal judge similarly quashed subpoenas on the grounds that they were retaliatory.
DeleteThe Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Walz celebrated the decision as “a victory for the rule of law and our democracy.”
Keep in mind, when the fucking media refers to trump's fucking DOJ, the fucking media really is referring to trump's fucking lawyer.
I want to be a Trump adversary but, for some reason, he refuses to sue me when I accuse him of raping children.
DeleteMichelle is a man and Barry is a homosexual.
ReplyDeleteDG, is that you?
Delete2:03 - How's Beavis doing Butthead?
DeleteImagine being so fucked-up in the head, you think there is a chance there is a Republican voter who isn't a bigot.
Delete"Tomorrow: At the tender age of 13, she was described as a dog"
ReplyDeleteWhat, no Wylie analysis? No NAEP scores? No inexcusable creeps? Why does Somerby bother teasing future topics if he doesn't return to them as promised?
We all know who was 13. What we don't understand is Somerby's fascination with that age group.
Perhaps Somerby will redeem himself by asking whether calling a young girl a dog is worse than calling a grown woman a man.
Women attain the peak of their beauty in their fourteenth year.
DeleteThis is what real Blue bloggers are discussing these days, and how they talk about it:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.jefftiedrich.com/p/hes-having-a-fucking-tantrum-colicky
Read that, and then read Somerby, and then tell me who is best for Blue America.
Just took a glance at his website, he certainly is more vulgar than Bob.
DeleteHaven't seen that many f bombs since that song from South Park's Team America movie.
Yes, Somerby has a prudish streak when it comes to stronger language. He also has a latent good girl/bad girl (madonna/whore) categorization of women that allows him to put women using bad language into the bad girl group. Tiedrich, despite the f-bombs, is a better man than Somerby.
DeleteSex workers are people too.
Delete3:02,
DeleteThankfully, you have dozens of dead ICE detainees you don't have to worry about.
RACIST AND SEXIST COMMENTS!!! PEOPLE ARE MAKING RACIST AND SEXIST COMMENTS OVER HERE!! . . . Nobody cares.
ReplyDeleteNobody cares = you don't care @2:49
DeleteNobody cares if people call Republican voters bigots for the same reason no one cares if they call water wet.
DeleteDon't get me wrong. There are a bunch of lying motherfuckers on line who try to deny the obvious truth that every Republican voter is a bigot. But no one cares what those lying motherfuckers say about the epidemic of bigotry that is the main character trait of Republican voters.
It isn't up to minorities to fix racism because the problem resides with the racists, not the targets of their hate. Similarly, Somerby keeps expecting women on Gutfeld's show to stand up and demand an end to sexist jokes. But sexism is not up to women to fix -- women don't have the means to fit it. It is up to men (and women) to stop their own sexism, not the victims who are on the receiving end.
ReplyDeleteSomerby refuses to examine his own sexism and racism (and other bigotries). He never does that. Instead, he calls for women to shut Gutfeld up and he wants everyone to pretend that targeting Michele Obama is not a racist act. Somerby and guys like him are the problem.
Is Somerby calling for women to arm themselves and shoot the misogynists on the Right to death?
DeleteAnything is possible.
I imagine he thinks Kat Timpf should quit in a huff, which would hurt her, not Gutfeld. But I doubt he approves of women in comedy.
DeleteWomen are funny.
