Correspondents "can't take a joke:" Judged by normal standards, the sitting president did have one good joke.
In fact, it was a very good joke, and it got a very good laugh at last Friday night's dinner. Eighteen minutes into his endless remarks, this is what he said:
PRESIDENT TRUMP (7/24/26): I hope that everyone finally got to enjoy their entire, very delicious beef tenderloins. It's very special beef. And I want you all to know that Bobby Kennedy, who's right here, personally ran over the cow in his car.
[Laughter, some applause]
Boom. And he cut it up, and he brought it here for you to eat tonight. So it's very fresh.
By traditional norms, that was a very good joke. It was aimed, in a good-natured way, at one of the president's own, as is the norm at such functions.
(The president quickly added this: "We love Bobby. I'll tell you, he's a piece of work. You think it's—it is fun, but he is a very different kind of a person, I will tell you. [Laughter] But he has what it takes and he's smart. And he loves the country, and he wants people to be made to feel good.")
He wants people to be made to feel good. It was the coda to a very good joke, and it came to the audience, live and direct, from an earlier cultural time.
The president had that one good joke. The rest of his 65-minute forced march was vastly different.
C-Span's cameras scanned the embarrassed, frozen faces on display throughout the hall. Crickets invaded the ballroom—and cabinet members were present as guests, often of the Red American news orgs whose correspondents shared the hall with colleagues from the Blue American press.
Crickets routinely swarmed the room—unless you were watching the Fox News Channel on Saturday morning, when the chyrons on Fox & Friends Weekend instantly reassured Red America in the manner shown:

That's what the chyrons said. For the record, the hilarious speech, a triumphant return, had included such "jabs" as this:
PRESIDENT TRUMP: She's a low IQ person, and she's also a very dishonest person. And she ought to get the hell out of our country. She shouldn't be here. She shouldn't be in our country.
Hilariously, the president said that Rep. Omar (D-MN) "ought to get the hell out of our country." As you can hear on the tape, it was crickets all the way down as he delivered that hilarious jab.
As a matter of basic decency, we're deleting the unfounded claims the president advanced about Rep. Omar in the course of a long, hilarious jab. He never stops making those unfounded claims, and he's never asked why he does.
Red and Blue scribes and cabinet members alike, no one managed to find a way to laugh at the endless array of personal insults the president dispensed all through his endless address. But on Fox & Friends Weekend the very next morning, the focus was on the way the correspondents couldn't "put down their swords and have a good time" with a president who was offering humor like that.
"They just couldn't do it," or so Rachel Campos-Duffy cheerfully said. And by the time The Big Weekend Show aired at 5 o'clock that afternoon, the president's performance had possibly become even funnier.
"The president stole the show," co-host Tomi Lahren instantly told Red American viewers.
"It's nice for a night to lighten the mood a bit." guest co-host Taylor Riggs eventually added.
In our view, Riggs rarely disappoints. "I love that we can take a step back and laugh a bit," she went on to say. "I love the moment for what it is and represents, and also the levity that I think this country desperately wants right now."
Yes, she was taking about the previous night's WHCA event! The chyrons were hailing the president's TRIUMPHANT RETURN, though two other chyrons said this:

Hilariously, he even "poked fun" at the "Dumocrats!" When he did, he carefully explained, for the ten millionth time, that the word "dumb" really does ends in a B.
"It's very quiet," the president said, after he'd offered that "Dumocrats" jab.

Different people will of course react in different ways to a nearly endless, 65-minute address. It's also true that the landscape of American "cable news" is routinely peopled by messenger children pimping the corporate agitprop Xeroxed for them by their owners.

It is a very, very different story over on CNN and MS NOW. CNN has mentioned Fauci 10 times on its air over the past 36 hours, per Mediate’s analysis.
On MS NOW, Fauci's name had been mentioned just once, DePaolo further said.
In presenting those numbers, DePaolo is describing the way the partisan organization of "cable news" is helping to create a pair of dueling Americas—a pair of rival American nations. Those nations are separate but far from equal when it comes to the delivery and receipt of real or alleged information and news.
On Fox, the focus on the Fauci diaries has come with a very aggressive set of claims about the former official's evil behavior—and yes, that word has been used.
Over here in Blue America, We Blues don't have the slightest idea that any of this is taking place on the "cable news" channel whose audiences dwarf the size of our own.

We Blues do not watch Fox. We think blaming Fauci for saving too many lives is a nothingburger. The point of commenting is not "gotcha," catching others in acts of hypocrisy by throwing their own past words in their faces. It is to explore aspects of a topic by discussing varying points of view expressed by diverse individuals until some consensus is reached or things move on. What DG calls hypocrisy could be just someone changing their mind on an opinion, something adults are permitted to do.

I believe many of Somerby's complaints are unjustified and arise because he does not understand the ethics and practice of journalism and because he has a chip on his shoulder about so-called elites (Ivy league grads) and women in journalism. He routinely conflates reporting with opinion writing for example. Reporters cite other people, they don't express their own opinions in news articles. Opinion writers express their own ideas in a piece clearly labeled as opinion. The latter can say Trump is crazy. Reporters cannot do that because they are not qualified to diagnose mental illness. Somerby must know that, yet he keeps complaining because the press doesn't label the president insane. Somerby, for his part, refuses to recognize the differences between insanity, personality disorders, normal age-related decline, and dementia (which is what Trump has). The press is right to stay out of it, except when reporting what qualified experts say.

Yes, the press was biased against Hillary in much the same way as it harmed Al Gore and later Kamala Harris, after attacking Joe Biden. Somerby was right to show how the press misbehaved when Al Gore ran. He could have done it again with Harris. As noted before, Somerby made a hard right turn in 2015 and stopped analyzing the press in the same manner as he had been doing. His switch resulted in his unfair targeting and complaints about Rachel Maddow and other figures who are not part of the press but are pundits. Somerby did not express those views about the press wrongs in Hillary's campaign. He attacked Hillary for claiming that Trump stalked her during the debate. He promoted Clinton Cash anti-Clinton messaging in his blog. He joined those criticizing Clinton and then later called her a terrible campaigner.

That is 15 years after Somerby began his blog. To the extent that the right is anti-democracy, Somerby has become anti-democracy himself. He has explicitly stated that he does not believe our democracy can survive, nor that we the people are built to participate in a democracy. We aren't up to it, Somerby keeps saying. He didn't say that stuff in 2000. That all came in 2015. Other bloggers noted the change too, so this is not in my imagination.
We all know that the press has been anti-liberal and biased against our candidates. That has not changed. Somerby changed and joined the right by promoting right wing talking points, attacking blue media (which he misrepresents), and generally trying to discourage blue voters.
I am not defending the press. I am concerned that Somerby lies here about his blueness while promoting the right, which is deceptive, dishonest, unfair to readers and undermines democracy by failing to support the needs of voters for accurate info. This is Somerby's blog and I am talking about Somerby. And no, I do not agree with his criticisms of non-journalists while pretending they are reporters, knocking Tarlov, advancing Maher and repeating Gutfeld endlessly in his negativity toward the left.

Note that seeking a different job the moment the draft ended implies a lack of commitment too. When a person avoids the draft, someone else goes in his place. Is that just? One of my friends spent 6 years working as a hospital orderly as assigned alternative service for being a religious conscientious objector. His entire life demonstrated commitment to his faith, which is how he got a deferment when others were being refused. That shows principled belief, not opportunism. He wouldn't have fought in any war, not just one conveniently described as unjust. We are discussing what kind of person would sell out and become a Trump influencer after supporting Al Gore.

ReplyDeleteWe are having an increasing number of food-borne bacteria making people sick nationwide, much like the early stages of covid. In this case, it is the result of failure of Trump's appointees to monitor our food supply and trace the source of contamination. Trump may be trying to get ahead of this problem, getting worse right before the midterms, by hinting at firing RFK Jr and by reminding the right of Fauci's "crimes." This may be intended to head off accusations against the right that they have not been protecting public health properly.

A former Olympian charged with deliberately damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is seeking access to all of the closed-door testimony that led to his indictment, pointing to “irregularities” in those grand jury proceedings.
In a court filing Monday, David Hearn's attorneys requested an order for the government to turn over a complete transcript of all grand jury proceedings. They also want prosecutors to disclose the legal instructions they gave to grand jurors about the elements of Hearn's alleged crime.
Hearn pleaded not guilty earlier this month to one felony count of property destruction and has a trial scheduled to start Sept. 28 in D.C. Superior Court. The charge, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years upon conviction, accuses Hearn of causing at least $1,000 in damage to the pool.
But his lawyers question whether prosecutors properly presented the grand jury with adequate evidence to support the amount of damage alleged in Hearn's indictment. A National Park Service official testified that the pool already was damaged before Hearn allegedly touched it, couldn't quantify any damage attributable to Hearn and said the same repairs would have been required regardless of his conduct, defense attorneys said.
“The witness’s testimony established that the pool had substantial preexisting damage requiring repair before any alleged conduct by Mr. Hearn," his lawyers wrote. “According to the witness, the pool was leaking more than one million gallons of water per week; its expansion joints had exceeded their service life; and the liner already contained a rip."
