VALUES: Did he say the same thing all over again?

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2026

There's no known cure for this: Yesterday, the sitting president said it again--or did he?

To see what he said, you can just click here. We'd transcribe it like this:

PRESIDENT TRUMP (10/7/26): If you want to see trauma, you want to see problems—

And I said it the other day: Let them hit a missile into San Diego or Los Angeles on the way. Let them hit—

You want to see a horror show? You want to see problems?

Let them hit San Diego, let them hit Los Angeles if you want to see some bad things happen, you want to see a country that would be in free fall.

We’re not going to let that happen. We protect our cities. We protect our country. We’re not letting that happen.

AUDIENCE: [Applause]

"We aren't going to let that happen?"

In the view of one close reader, that's largely what the sitting president was clumsily saying the other day, with a clumsy reference to the idea that "we'll have to pay a bit more for gas" clumsily marbled in.

On this morning's Morning Joe, Mika and the others were pretending that he was still inviting an attack on the coast. (Joe wasn't there today.) Eventually, it was clear that Mark Leibovich didn't agree with what the rest of the gang was saying, but under the rules of the cable news game, he knew that he couldn't just say so.

There is no cure for the tribal mind. That's another way of saying that there is no cure for human. In our view, Al Gore didn't say he invented the Internet, and the current president didn't invite Iran to bomb the west coast

More on this another day. There's plainly no cure for this.

    1. I think he DID invite Iran to bomb the west coast. In Iran, those hearing Trump's words might conclude that this is his price for negotiating an end to the war.

Real presidents don't say things like Trump did, so it has to be a coded message to signal terms to Iran. Trump is asking Iran to help him with his internal political problems in exchange for peace terms before the midterms. Why wouldn't Iran think that? It isn't as if Trump had send bona fide negotiators to discuss peace with them, just buffoons discussing a Tehran Trump hotel and crypto payoffs, not real diplomats.

Why won't Republicans use Article 25 to remove Trump before he harms us more?

    2. I agree with David, some are trying to falsely claim that Trump meant he is not going to "let that happen" when plainly he meant he is fine with it happening.

One positive thing about Trump, particularly as his filter fades, is that Republicans are finally going mask off to some extent and being a little more honest about their true nature.

    4. Trump doesn't have the ability to prevent it from happening. He can't even end his stupid war. He can't negotiate good enough terms to end it. He can't get the Strait opened up. He can't protect ships from being attacked in that region. He had to move his bomber from the UK (supposedly a safe place) because Israel told him there was a plot to attack them. How on earth could he prevent an attack on LA or SD, just by making an announcement that he will keep us safe there? He has not POWER and his military is corrupt and inept. It is an empty promise, so of course his audience was happy about him specifying targets that weren't them.

Iranian officials say they will soon release the audio of several voicemails Donald Trump left them in which he begs, threatens, attempts to bribe, and finally cries for them to open up the Strait of Hormuz so gas prices will go down before Americans vote on November 3.

Hours later, Trump posts that the US has just had “productive talks” with Iran and announced the US will not attack Iran before the midterms.

This is like when Trump said that it would be a shame if something were to happen to Hillary Clinton, while she was his opponent. It put a target on her back. It is irresponsible.

  7. Is this the most important issue today? Brad Slager is trying to slime Talarico by saying that one of his donors in in the Epstein files, so guilt by association. This is how the right wing press rolls. Kimberly Guilfoyle was caught clumsily trying to grift by asking a right wing donor to pay off her Amex card in exchange for exerting govt influence (using her connections to do him a favor). This is how the right wing rolls. But Somerby is fixated on how the left reported something stupid that Trump clearly said about Iran bombing LA or SD, and it would be a small price to pay for peace. Trump is trying to walk that back, and Somerby is trying really really hard to help him.

Somerby has become a Trump-whisperer. In this case, it doesn't mean that he is trying to heal Trump's pain, but he is trying to explain away the stupidity issuing from Trump's rancid-anus mouth. Somerby thinks he knows what is in Trump's mind when he burbles nonsense, with enough certainty to complain about differing opinions of political analysts on TV.

  13. Not that this will make a difference in anonymouse “thinking”, but there is this from AI:

To understand why targeting major metropolitan centers like San Diego and Los Angeles would have a uniquely devastating impact on the United States, it is necessary to examine their critical concentrations of national defense infrastructure, global trade corridors, aerospace manufacturing, and economic output. Strategic planners, economic historians, and geopolitical analysts have long documented how certain geographical nodes serve as systemic backbones for the entire nation.

Economic and Gross Regional Product Concentration:

Metropolitan regions such as Los Angeles and San Diego function as primary macroeconomic powerhouses for the United States. Los Angeles anchors the largest county economy in the nation and serves as the financial, manufacturing, and commercial capital of the American West. San Diego, with a Gross Regional Product (GRP) scaling well into hundreds of billions of dollars, represents one of the most dynamic innovation hubs in the country [San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation].

The sudden disruption of these economies would not merely affect localized populations; it would trigger severe national supply chain shocks, disrupt financial markets, and paralyze key sectors of the American economy, particularly trade, biotech, and high-technology manufacturing.

    National Defense and Military Infrastructure:

One of the most critical vulnerabilities—and conversely, strategic assets—centered in Southern California is its unmatched concentration of military and defense architecture.

San Diego's Defense Ecosystem: San Diego hosts the largest concentration of military assets in the world and the largest federal military workforce in the United States [San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation]. It serves as the principal homeport for the United States Pacific Fleet, encompassing vital naval surface forces, nuclear submarines, and aviation wings. Approximately 20 percent of San Diego's GRP is directly or indirectly tied to defense-related spending, making it an indispensable pillar of American national security and power projection in the Indo-Pacific and globally [San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation].
Aerospace and Defense Manufacturing: Southern California has historically been the cradle of American aerospace and defense technology. From the development of advanced unmanned aerial systems (drones) by companies like Shield AI to major aerospace engineering and defense contracting firms across the LA basin, the region produces the technological and hardware backbone required by the U.S. Armed Forces. A catastrophic disruption to this industrial base would severely compromise military readiness and technological superiority.

Global Trade and Supply Chain Gateways:

The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach together form the "San Pedro Bay port complex," which handles roughly forty percent of all containerized cargo entering the United States. This maritime complex is the undisputed gateway for trans-Pacific trade between the U.S. and Asian manufacturing powerhouses.

In addition, the region is integrated through massive rail, highway, and air cargo networks. If these logistics hubs were incapacitated, the immediate result would be an unprecedented nationwide bottleneck. American manufacturing plants dependent on imported parts would face rapid shutdowns, consumer goods would experience severe shortages, and the flow of international commerce would grind to a near halt.

    Critical Innovation and Technological Sectors:

Beyond traditional manufacturing and military might, Southern California anchors irreplaceable clusters of scientific research and development. Cont…

The loss of these intellectual and physical research infrastructures would set back American technological innovation by decades, impacting everything from healthcare to national cyber-defense.

  15. Ana Marie Cox makes an important point at Mediaite, asking why male grifters in Trump's administration are not treated as viciously as female grifters (lately Kimbery Guilfoyle):

"We’ve been talking about Kimberly Guilfoyle’s Amex bill for two days straight. Pundits are piling on her access grifting and shakedown ventures and, admittedly, Guilfoyle’s brand of fraud is irresistibly juvenile (asking for bribe with prayer hands emoji!) and overt (“everyone gets right back to me,” she promised her mark).

But is Guilfoyle gaining such widespread notice because she is especially corrupt? Or is it because she retains the look of the Fox host she once was–because she was rocking the Mar-a-Lago Face before we knew to call it that? The media’s fascination with her is familiar from its enthrallment to other women in Trump’s orbit who’ve faced scandals. Pam Bondi had her wardrobe dissected. (“The Absolute Worst Outfits Pam Bondi Wore During Her Short Year As Trump’s Attorney General.”) Social media jesters dubbed Kristi Noem “ICE Barbie.” Late night comics have gleefully insinuated that Natalie Harp and Trump are having an affair.

These are not barbs that reporters and internet wags typically throw at men in similar situations."

Of course, we know why this is happening -- the right is misogynistic, even toward its own female supporters. But we on the left should be equal opportunity critics of the grifting taking place on the right, so that Kash Patel gets the same focus as Kristi Noem. They are all crooks.
