African American troops were used against striking miners because it was believed they would be less likely to fraternize with the striking miners. The black troops guarded Pullman cars during the Pullman strike.

Ignoring the long history of racial animosity within the labor movement and calling the remaining tensions "racism" as if it were a personality flaw and not a lingering historical and family reality is unfair to white working class members, union or not. Prior to that time period, they were blocked entirely from union jobs.

From: Organized Labor and Racial Wage Inequality in the United States,
Jake Rosenfeld and Meredith Kleykamp, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4300995/

"The decades surrounding the turn of the 20th century proved inauspicious for the emergence of a strong African-American presence within the labor movement. Early growth in U.S. unions coincided with violent attacks on African-American nonunion workers (Olzak 1989). White workers would constitute the vast majority of all unionists for generations, and many union leaders fought hard to keep it that way. As the nations’ trade unions fiercely policed their racial boundaries, they pressed the state for official recognition and protection as organizations granted the legal right to bargain with employers. These political efforts culminated with congressional passage of the National Labor Relations Act, commonly referred to by the name of its chief sponsor, Senator Robert F. Wagner. Passage of the legislation required the cooperation of powerful Southern congressmen, who insisted on provisions excluding agricultural and domestic workers from the law’s purview (Katznelson, Geiger, and Kryder 1993; Frymer 2008, pp. 28–29). The bill’s crafters designed these exemptions to keep the majority of the African-American workforce unorganized and exploited. In 1935, the historic year in which President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Wagner Act into law, less than 1% of all union members were black (Frymer 2008).

This would change remarkably quickly. Less than 40 years later, no group would be more overrepresented in labor unions than African-Americans, at least in the private sector. African-American unionization rates would peak just as private-sector unionization rates began to plummet, suggesting that deunionization has contributed to racial inequality in recent decades."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-39589006335591996322016-12-22T09:45:04.198-05:002016-12-22T09:45:04.198-05:00Getting past DinC's ridiculous "turnabout...Getting past DinC's ridiculous "turnabout is fair play" stance that obviously does not work when talking about oppressor v. oppressed, I am curious about this "unions are racist" idea.

I grew up in Detroit in the 60's and 70's, and the UAW was a strong, very black voice in the city at that time. What incidents are you discussing here? I personally saw many black families move into the middle class because of the power of union bargaining. They have been the mainstay of Democratic politics, including GOTV efforts involving the working class in Northern cities. Unions have declined and with them, the influence in big city politics and to a lesser extent national politics. Bernie and Clinton vied for union endorsements but Trump ignored them.

Why are unions important to questions about race? Unions historically opposed racial progress and worked hard to keep African Americans from entering the professions, apprenticeships and trades offering good pay in big cities. They similarly worked against entry for women into such jobs. There is little love lost between those white working class former and current union members and black workers, even though they share interests and should make common cause. Yes, there has been progress, but these animosities have occurred in the lifetimes of voters.

Attributing white and black tension to simple racism overlooks the competition for jobs that has occurred historically and still exists. Bernie has been too firmly allied with working class and class-related language and concerns (which have excluded African Americans so long) to have been viable as a candidate to be embraced by African American voters, no matter how he reacted to BLM and similar demands. Clinton did a better job of speaking to both groups.

When white working class people seem squeamish about racial issues, it is partly because there is a bitter struggle for inclusion in unionized white America. The attitudes linger even though unionization itself has declined.

No one talks about this stuff. Bernie has to have been aware of it. I believe he made his choice in an explicit way that was obvious to black voters.

David in CA doesn't know what he's talking about, as usual.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-62368384197024855892016-12-21T19:07:50.038-05:002016-12-21T19:07:50.038-05:00When Social Justice types talk about "diversi...When Social Justice types talk about "diversity", what I hear is that they look upon Americans as members of some subgroup, and there is a hierarchy of such subgroups, based on victim status.
