And so 60% of the African Americans males in this country who dropped out of high school who are in their thirties are in jail today.

Cenk Uygur: That's too amazing to believe. It's literally unbelievable.

Halvorson: Yep. The total number of African Americans in jail [i.e. jail, prison, parole, or probation] today in this country exceeds the total number of African American males enslaved at the beginning of the Civil War.

Uygur: Amazing.

Halvorson: If you go back, I mean it's a numbers issue, but if you go back and look at the number of people in jail it's 60% of those who drop out of school. It's 10% of the ones who didn't drop out of school. But you can predict with 80% accuracy by age three whether or not the kids are going to drop out of school and that's because all the brain development happens in the first three years of life....CMikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13481861530761114492noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-6514810143387049832019-04-12T13:54:45.292-04:002019-04-12T13:54:45.292-04:00Thanks, @11:34 for your informative comment. I do...Thanks, @11:34 for your informative comment. I don't know how valuable universal pre-K is, but it's not likely to narrow the gap. If anything, it might widen the gap. Poor kids were already eligible for Head Start. So, making pre-K universal extends this benefit to the non-poor kids.David in Calhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09068188536758619565noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-6589685568803113352019-04-12T13:22:07.012-04:002019-04-12T13:22:07.012-04:00It's not the test prep for black students, it&...It's not the test prep for black students, it's the parenting prep.Alan Snipeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05070460889011106908noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-39026118130657690552019-04-12T12:56:04.334-04:002019-04-12T12:56:04.334-04:00I don't know if ad hominem hurts or helps, but...I don't know if ad hominem hurts or helps, but it certainly is the order of the day here, and with more sadness than rancor, it is impossible to escape the fact Bob Somerby's is an idiot.Gregnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-33286548976295413612019-04-12T11:34:57.820-04:002019-04-12T11:34:57.820-04:00“The mayor has simply ignored all the rest.”
“Nex...“The mayor has simply ignored all the rest.”

“Next week: Imagining what could be done”

If Somerby imagines that quality universal pre-K is something that could be done, (and it actually is high on the list of recommended approaches to narrowing the achievement gaps), *without* mentioning that DeBlasio actually implemented this in New York City, then Somerby needs to be frog-marched to a re-education camp.

Somerby is just breathtakingly unfair here. He seems to imply that the “7% solution” is the only idea for education DeBlasio has ever had.

And guess what? The Times, the Only Newspaper That Bob Reads, reported on the pre-K program:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/31/nyregion/de-blasio-universal-pre-k.html

You will find no mention of this article at TDH.

Is this all that NYC should be doing? Perhaps not. But it is one of the most highly recommended ideas for reducing the gaps. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
