It details the remarkably ugly and non cooperative stance taken by the Puritans/Pilgrims towards Native Americans. It starts off early on where the settler colonists were indeed about to starve and instead raided the Native American's winter store of food, and for the most part, things get worse from there.

Somerby just seems lost and confused.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-76069205076493342152022-12-01T17:29:54.667-05:002022-12-01T17:29:54.667-05:00Also, kids are told about Squanto in elementary gr...Also, kids are told about Squanto in elementary grades.

Ceceliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15162272807640653299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-39295975772397007382022-12-01T17:23:32.595-05:002022-12-01T17:23:32.595-05:00Anonymouse 4:48pm, Silverman’s piece is linked by ...Anonymouse 4:48pm, Silverman’s piece is linked by Somerby.
Ceceliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15162272807640653299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-68140703919990216832022-12-01T16:50:25.493-05:002022-12-01T16:50:25.493-05:00Cooperation and good feelings depend on not killin...Cooperation and good feelings depend on not killing each other. Rather, it followed a string of bloody episodes since 1524 in which European explorers seized coastal Wampanoags to be sold into overseas slavery or to be trained as interpreters and guides. The Wampanoags reached out to the Pilgrims not only despite this violent history, but also partly because of it.”
Ceceliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15162272807640653299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-7593116930473261402022-12-01T16:03:47.842-05:002022-12-01T16:03:47.842-05:00Demographication is not a real thing and it has no...Demographication is not a real thing and it has no rules.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-3689033543855302512022-12-01T16:02:14.161-05:002022-12-01T16:02:14.161-05:00After reading this, I have no idea what was edited...After reading this, I have no idea what was edited in or out and no idea what “attitude” Somerby objected to. ...Is he telling the story in an accurate way? This

"the Natives make contact through the interpreters Samoset and Squanto. The sachem (or chief) even agrees to a treaty of alliance with Plymouth." is at least trivially inaccurate.

"the Natives" are one particular tribe - the Wampanoag. There are a number of other tribes nearby as well. Instead of saying "the" sachem, it would be more accurate to say "a local sachem". As he is only chief of one fairly small tribe.

The same thing is true of the English though. We tend to think of Plymouth as the head of the New England colonies since they became part of Massachusetts and they were first, but there were several other groups, with their own leadership - New Haven, Connecticut, Boston, Rhode Island and their own interactions with various tribes.

Also, I believe the Pilgrims died of disease and exposure during that first winter, more than starvation.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8611810694571930415.post-81592008315334232602022-12-01T10:26:24.617-05:002022-12-01T10:26:24.617-05:00tl;dr,
