Our various one-track minds: Atop the front page of the Washington Post, three journalists report the latest from Candidate Trump today.
We were struck by the limitations of Trump's one-track mind—and by the limitations of the one-track mind found at the Washington Post:
GOLD, DEMIRJIAN AND DEBONIS (6/11/16): It was a bad time for Sen. Cory Gardner to be caught in an elevator with a reporter. Donald Trump had just referred to Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts as “Pocahontas”—again—and the Republican freshman from Colorado was struggling to figure out how to respond.Candidate Trump was at it again. In another way, so was the Post.
“I think people need to be treated with respect, and that’s what we’ve demanded from everyone,” he offered.
But was it racist?
Gardner clammed up. He politely referred further questions to his press secretary.
We agree with Senator Gardner. It would be a better world if people were more frequently treated with respect.
In our view, it would also be a better world if reporters had a wider range of lenses through which they viewed Trump's conduct.
Candidate Trump had made his latest unusual comment—again. Once again, he had referred to Senator Warren as "Pocahontas." According to the Post report, he had also referred to her as "Goofy Elizabeth," the comic book-level term of derision he has selected for her.
In the course of the Post's report, its team of reporters quoted the views of various people concerning Trump's "Pocahontas" comment and his behavior in general.
Senator John McCain said he tries to avoid "personal insults." Rep. Tom Cole (R-Oklahoma) said Trump should avoid such "pejorative" language.
Several other Republican senators dismissed the "Pocahontas" remark as a joke. In some ways, we think Republican strategist Stuart Stevens had the most salient reaction:
GOLD, DEMIRJIAN AND DEBONIS: The “Pocahontas” line spurred chatter at former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney’s ideas summit Friday in Park City, Utah, where some attendees said they were aghast at Trump’s many race-based lines of attack.Personally, we wouldn't say Trump is "sick," but we think Stevens was in the right ballpark. We would say that Candidate Trump frequently seems disordered, perhaps diagnosable.
Stuart Stevens—the chief strategist on Romney’s 2012 presidential bid, who, like Romney, has vowed not to vote for Trump—said the candidate’s use of “Pocahontas” to attack Warren was both racist and inappropriate.
“If you said this in a sixth-grade class, the teacher would tell you, ‘Don’t say this,’ ” Stevens said.
“This is a sick guy, and Americans are not longing for a president who’s going to go out and use ethnic slurs against people,” he said. “It’s amusing in the same way telling dirty jokes around a frat house can get laughs, but most people grow out of that. It’s childish.”
Candidate Trump seems to have no normal concept of the role of accuracy in one's public statements. He rarely seems to have any idea what he's talking about.
He constantly self-contradicts, often within mere minutes. And yes, we'd say that his behavior is frequently "childish," as Stevens said.
In the relentlessness of his inaccurate statements, Candidate Trump is in a class by himself in the modern political era. That said, the press corps has been very slow to establish this as a troubling fact about Trump.
Treatment of his constant misstatements is consigned to little-read fact-check blogs. In hard copy, on page one, reporters seem inclined to limit themselves to one question only:
Are his statements "racist?"
Is it "racist" when Candidate Trump derides Warren as "Pocahontas?" In our view, the candidate's conduct in this latest pitiful episode doesn't rise to that level.
The sheer inanity of Trump's behavior strikes us as its defining characteristic, along with the relentless inaccuracy of his public statements.
That said, we see a problem. Modern journalists have themselves been inane, and relentlessly inaccurate, for perhaps three decades now. Perhaps for that reason, modern journalists seem to have a hard time recognizing or discussing those traits in Candidate Trump.
Modern journalists have been inventing facts to fit preferred narratives for decades. Perhaps for that reason, modern journalists have been very slow to challenge this part of Trump's game.
Modern journalists seem to know only one question: "Was that last statement racist?" They seem to know just that one play, have only that tool in their tool shed.
In our view, this limitation isn't impressive, intellectually or morally. It tends to pose as moral concern. It strikes us as a moral pose and as a form of shirking.
Was Candidate Trump's latest statement racist? For ourselves, we don't think this latest inane behavior rises to that level.
In our view, Trump is disordered, apparently dishonest, relentlessly inane. So too, we'd submit, is the national "press," with its one-track mind.
The fact-check we still haven't seen: Did Donald J. Trump really send investigators to Hawaii in 2011 to check the facts of President Obama's birth?
Did those gumshoes, if they really exist, really uncover various facts which were highly disturbing?
In 2011 and 2012, Donald J. Trump made these claims again and again from very high platforms. In the process, he helped turn our public discourse into an even larger trash heap.
Were any of those statements true? Or was Donald J. Trump simply lying? To this day, we haven't seen a major news org investigate this behavior by Trump. It's a major part of his recent history, but the press doesn't seem to care.
Let's take a guess about the pass which is being extended to Trump. Perhaps this behavior was so much like the press corps' own behavior in recent years that news orgs haven't been able to see it for what it is.
Childish name-calling they can spot. Gigantic, rolling ugly inventions largely escape their ken!
Trumpism didn't start with Trump. It started inside the press. For decades, it's been the norm.
This one is going to confuse the troll. Nevertheless, stand by its witlessness.
ReplyDeleteThis post and the comment box which follow do not cofuse "the troll." They confirm his arguments.

Absolutely confirmed! And sad too. The others are the problem. The troll is the one that knows. Confirmed and sad. No question!
DeleteLet's take a guess about the pass which is being extended to Trump. Some of Hillary's supporters are her biggest problem.

You fail to mention the context of the Pocahontis reference. Warren made a dubious claim at Harvard that she is an American Indian to be able to check that advantageous "minority" box for diversity calculations. Without that explanation, any discussion of racism based on the comment is misleading if not dishonest. Perhaps he should have said the more explicit Fauxcahontis.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by on your way to Breitbart.com.
DeleteWarren is 1/16 Cherokee. Pocahontas was not Cherokee. Sort of like treating all Europeans as if they all came from France.
DeleteHarvard (and other universities) are not permitted to use minority status when hiring, but they do collect that info from candidates and employees. You have no idea whether she checked a box and then wrote biracial or 1/16 in the margin. Few people are 100% anything. This is about as silly a manufactured pseudoscandal as anything the conservatives ever come up with.
For a while I used to disclaim European heritage on those forms because the Irish are not historically or ethnically part of Europe, but then they joined the EU. It's an imperfect classification scheme.
What dream world are you living in to think that universities prominently seek diversity by somehow NOT taking into account minority status when hiring?
DeleteWhat dream world? I work in academia so I know how the process works. The demographic info is collected by HR. The department, which does the hiring, never sees it. If someone were obviously a minority, they wouldn't be hired unless they are also qualified for the job. There is training on how to eliminate sources of bias when determining whether someone is qualified or not. There are periodic reviews to determine whether (1) sufficient minority applicants are being attracted by ads, and (2) percentages of minority candidates are being hired at a rate comparable with their representation in the population (e.g., African Americans with PhDs). It is illegal to ask someone whether they have minority status, just as it is illegal to ask them their age, whether they have kids or are married or gay or any other protected status.
DeleteThe rationale is that if you eliminate bias through training and procedures and if you sincerely want a more diverse faculty, and if you widely advertise your jobs so that more people in target groups hear about them and can apply, percentages of minority faculty will increase.
Republicans believe in a caricature hiring process in which minorities and women are automatically given preference over white males regardless of qualifications. It doesn't work that way. But hey, stoke your outrage -- who cares about reality?
C'mon 8:56, this is inane HR boilerplate. It is only useful to fend off the EEOC and fellow academics with their head in the sand.
Delete"The demographic info is collected by HR. The department, which does the hiring, never sees it."
May be useful for initial screening (and CYA), but once the department personally interacts with a candidate they'll know whether they are a minority.
"There are periodic reviews to determine whether (1) sufficient minority applicants are being attracted by ads, and (2) percentages of minority candidates are being hired at a rate comparable with their representation in the population (e.g., African Americans with PhDs)."
Hmm. Once one of these reviews determine there is not enough hiring of minorities relative to the population then what? Seems if the consequences are bad enough (EEOC lawsuits? Bad PR?) that there would be significant pressure hire minorities.
Yes, you no doubt believe that you can "tell" who is a minority just by looking at them. Can you tell by looking whether someone has asthma? Can you tell by looking whether they are Pacific Islander or Pilipino or Hispanic? Can you tell by looking whether someone is gay?
DeleteOnce one of the reviews determines there are not enough minorities you are pressured to advertise your job in places that will be read by minority applicants, to contact minority faculty members at other institutions to let them know you are hiring, and to make sure the job listing is written in an inclusive manner.
I have never seen anyone pressured to hire a particular person, minority or not. I did once see a faculty committee unanimously identify a Dean candidate who the provost didn't want to work with. They disbanded our search (hiring no one) and formed a new committee to identify a different candidate. They never told us who to hire or recommend. I have been on many hiring committees and my experience doesn't correspond to yours.
Most of the screening is done of resumes, publications and letters or recommendation. You then identify a short list of people to invite to campus. It is hard to tilt the process when all you see is paperwork like that.
I have seen considerable factionalism in the department over a candidate's theoretical perspective, methods, and chosen topic of research. I've seen none arising out of the candidate's race or other minority status.
You seem to believe the garbage handed to you by people like David Horowitz, people with a conservative axe to grind but not much in the way of evidence to support it.
Elizabeth Warren's department would have been much more concerned about her publication record and views on economics than her 1/16 (or 1/32) Cherokee heritage. This is just silly.
How is Elizabeth Warren any kind of fraud when she was hired on the basis of her academic record?
Delete10:26. You are equal parts dumb and stupid. What you wrote has absolute no relation to the matters being discussed. What is wrong with you and your life? You are a loser and you will never win. You're a sick, sick, sick clown and if I ever see you on the street, I. Will. Kick. Your. Ass. THIS IS NOT WARNING.
Delete@ANON 1339 ... You bully. LOL.
DeleteI have heard of but don't read that web site. Tell me that kind of non responsive comment does not go as clever in your mind. Please tell me that.
ReplyDelete@6:11 was kindly directing you to a website where your comment would find agreement and appreciation.
Delete"Dubious claim" -- on what basis are you suggesting that her grandmother was not Cherokee? Isn't that something that we leave up to families to decide? This strikes me as a new form of birtherism. I can hear conservatives calling for her to release her DNA test. It's just idiotic and Trump is Idiot #1.
What an admission. You only want to hear from people who agree with you.
DeleteAnd whether you believe her claim or not, to discuss Trump calling her Pocahontas and say that it was racist without even mentioning that what he was doing was mocking her claim is the dishonestly in reporting which I thought this site was dedicated to pointing out by others.
What basis does Trump have to mock her claim? How does he know she is not the 1/16 Cherokee she has claimed (on the basis of what her relatives told her)? Is Trump now going to develop a set of eyeballs representing eye color so he can measure who is truly Cherokee (nor not)? Is he going to use hair swatches to decide whether she is "dark" enough? Hitler's Germany did those things. They demanded birth certificates and someone with 1/16 Jewish blood would not only be mocked but excluded from privileges of pure citizens. That legacy is why many of us don't think it is funny when Trump calls Warren "Pocahontas" and mocks her ancestry. No one appointed him the ancestry police -- mocker in chief of women with Cherokee grandmothers.
DeleteThere is no justification for Trump's mockery that is not racist (because he is discussing what % of a given race entitles one to claim a particular heritage, and mocking her claim because it is different than his judgment). This is ugly no matter how you look at it.
Context would be important if it provided any sort of explanation or justification -- it doesn't. It makes it worse for Trump. People are implying that you would be happier at a different website because you seem to think that it is OK to mock a woman with a Cherokee grandmother because you don't think her grandma was actually Native American and you further think it is OK to use the name of a specific Indian woman who lived in the 1600s in Virginia as if it were generic to all Indians regardless of tribe everywhere in time and place in the USA. "Pocahontas was the daughter of Powhatan, paramount chief of Tsenacommacah, an alliance of about thirty Algonquian-speaking groups and petty chiefdoms in Tidewater, Virginia." Algonquins are not Cherokees, just as Irish are not Italians. So, Trump shows no respect to Native American people and certainly none to Warren, who has done nothing beyond repeat a family story about her grandmother, one shared by many Americans.
Hitler? You lose the argument.
Delete@anon 9:07pm Last I checked she was claiming to be 1/32 Cherokee and has no proof to back it up. Trump was not saying any of the things you claim about heritage, etc. The jab is a reminder she's fraud who used lies to get ahead.
DeleteTrump is being sued for fraud, you nitwit.
DeleteSmarter trolls, please.
@anon at 2:53
DeleteFirst Hitler. Then this an illogical ad hominem response.
All to support your contention that something which doesn't confirm your world view should not be reported.
This is sad.
There was an ANON up above saying that universities don't hire based on minority status. There are SYSTEMS and TRAINING to prevent that!
DeleteYet what was the big complaint 20 years ago in The Crimson (http://www.thecrimson.com/article/1996/10/22/survey-diversity-lacking-at-hls-pa/) which touted Elizabeth Warren as the sole Native American and minority woman at HLS? Not enough diversity of course!
"A majority of Harvard Law School students are unhappy with the level of representation of women and minorities on the Law School faculty, according to a recent survey.
The survey distributed last May by the Coalition for Civil Rights (CCR), reported that 83 percent of respondents believe the number of minority women on the Law School faculty is inadequate.
More than half of students surveyed also expressed disappointment with the low representation of white women, minority men and openly gay, lesbian or bisexual faculty members at the Law School."
Too bad for these punk students, the EEOC itself says that hiring discrimination based on customer preference (they are the customers remember) is completely wrong and illegal!
"What if clients, customers, or employees prefer working with people of their own race?
Basing employment decisions on the racial preferences of clients, customers, or coworkers constitutes intentional race discrimination. Employment decisions that are based on the discriminatory preferences of customers or coworkers are just as unlawful as decisions based on an employer's own discriminatory preferences."
Despite pressure from the government and an overwhelming amount of interest groups I'm sure HR offices all over the country are hiring colorblind just like they're supposed to! Assuming otherwise is just racist and mean and probably a symptom of angry white man syndrome.
Oh, also from that Crimson article:
Delete"A black male from a lower socioeconomic background will approach the study of constitutional law in a different way from a white upper-class male," Reyes said.
Wow! Racist much? Do black judges come up with different rulings than white ones? A study from a professor at Princeton suggests they do! Is that RACIST?
http://www.princeton.edu/~jkastell/AA_Panel_Effects/kastellec_racial_diversity_final.pdf
"In this article, I evaluate the substantive consequences
of judicial diversity by examining both whether black
judges vote differently than nonblack judges in affirmative
action cases and whether black judges affect case
outcomes by influencing the voting of nonblack judges in
these cases. I first discuss why such influence is important
for assessing the quality of substantive representation on
multimember courts. Then, drawing on literatures from
political science, economics, social psychology, and organizational
science, I advance three possible mechanisms
by which black judges could influence their nonblack colleagues.
Using matching methods, I show that African
American judges are significantly more likely than comparable
nonblack judges to support affirmative action programs.
More importantly, this individual-level difference
translates into a substantial causal effect of adding a black
judge to an otherwise all-nonblack panel: the presence of
a black judge increases the probability that a nonblack
judge will rule in favor of an affirmative action program
by about 20 percentage points. In fact, the random assignment
of a black counterjudge—a black judge sitting
with two nonblack judges—to a three-judge panel of the
Courts of Appeals nearly ensures that the panel will vote
in favor of an affirmative action program. It is thus clear
that the substantive consequences of racial diversity on
the Courts of Appeals are quite large."
The cynical among us might look at this and come to the conclusion that if you're in favor of affirmative action or are a politician wanting to gain favor with voters who are in favor of affirmative action you'd be better off nominating and confirming a black judge instead of a white one based on his ethnic background!
University administrators do try to pacify students but they don't govern based on what students want. They know that any given batch of students will be gone in 1-4 years.
DeleteYour whole argument about the black judges falls apart when you consider Clarence Thomas. These are probabilities being discussed, not certainties. If a panel of judges is able to hear the arguments/considerations relevant to someone black and it affects their decision, that is what is supposed to happen as a result of widening participation. It seems likely that white judges may not have the motivation to familiarize themselves with the concerns involved in such cases but may be sympathetic to them once they hear them. Why is that a bad thing? It seems to me that is what is supposed to happen.
A comparable situation occurs where white men make decisions about women's health. Adding a persuasive female judge to such a panel would enable her to widen the perspective of male judges, making them more aware of all of the issues. If they then vote differently, how is that a bad thing?
By the way, Godwin's law has been suspended because comparisons between Hitler/Mussolini and Trump are apt. You really should read something about that time period.
Comments discussions are not a game in which someone wins or loses. They are an ongoing conversation in which people contribute in order to advance understanding and knowledge. If you want to "win", go buy a videogame. Better yet, grow up and understand that this election is not a game -- it is a serious undertaking in which we choose a leader who will have considerable impact on our country. If you think that is Trump, you have very little in common with anyone here.
I'm from Massachusetts so I am somewhat familiar with this. Warren ran against Scott Brown (a complete zero in my opinion) who won a special election to fill Ted Kennedy's seat after Kennedy died. During the campaign, it somehow came up that Warren, on some document related to her hiring as a Harvard law professor, had indicated she was of Native American heritage. Her claim to such heritage wasn't overwhelming. She said that in growing up her family members always said that she had some native American ancestors. It was pretty clear that this played no role in the decision by Harvard to hire her as a law professor - and she distinguished herself as a law professor. Notwithstanding this, this became a fairly major issue in the campaign, and was widely covered, even by the so-called liberal Boston Globe. What all this illustrates to me is how dumb campaigns and campaign coverage generally is - plucking a minor, meaningless detail out of almost thin air, as if it's important in deciding who should be elected - as opposed to what the candidate's policies are and what potential effect those policies would have.
DeleteTrump's calling her "Pocahontas" derives from this - that she on this application document checked a box indicating American Indian heritage, when the claim arguably was a stretch. J. Clark's point has some validity - Trump isn't simply calling her an offensive name because she is of American Indian heritage - his (stupid) inference is she claimed that heritage untruthfully and that's how she got the Harvard job. I assume J. Clark doesn't disagree that calling her this name in these circumstance is part and parcel of the phenomenon where the GOP has nominated as its candidate for President a con man who lies and distorts non-stop, and who has brought us the first WWE style presidential campaign.
I think you're mistaken that Trumpmos don't share anything in common here. Somerby is read in alt right circles more than is probably expected. You don't see a whole lot of representation of that in the comments nor does Bob want to encourage it, but his focus on tribalism is shared quite a bit by those many here would consider evil.
DeleteWhy is Trump picking on Pocahontas?
ReplyDeleteThere is an irony to the fact that Pocahontas married into the Virginia colony and took on her husband's name and European lifestyle. Is Trump implying that she was a fraud because of that? Does she deserve an apology from Trump? If so, for what?
We all know that Trump just couldn't think of any other female Indian name. Most likely he only knew this one because of the Disney movie.
Good point. In fact, Trump apologized to Pocahontas for the comparison.
DeleteToday HuffPost is complaining that Hillary's tweets are not spontaneous enough. Doesn't matter whether they are effective zingers or get the message out well -- she is being mechanical and non-authentic because she doesn't shoot from the hip like Trump does. When will out press corps grow up?
ReplyDeleteJust did a Google search for "Hillary's tweets are not spontaneous enough." Found nothing linked HuffPost.
DeleteIn fact I found nothing resembleing what the comment complains about anywhere.
My guess is that Mr. Trump's investigators confirmed that Barack Obama was born in Hawaii - and that Mr Trump found this fact "disturbing."
ReplyDeletePosting links... PROVES EVERYTHING! Thanks! Take next weekend off. I will.

The Bob
We'd like to see which high platforms Trump made those claims from again and again, particularly in 2012. Think The Bob could fact check himself?
anon 11:16, doing a 5 minute internet search you can find that Trump advanced the claim in 2011 and 2012 on numerous occasions - it was big news - while he was running for president and after. In 2012 on CNN with Wolf Blitzer. Your point is not only erroneous, but it is incredibly stupid nitpicking. I don't know if you are the anon who explains why he follows TDH day in and day out, so he can feel superior to the dimwitted 'Bobfans' - (if that isn't the reason, what is?) - but you conjure up the image of the loser, living in his mother's basement, sitting in front of the computer in his underwear.
DeleteBS has a pretty clear world view that he constantly reexamines through news reports, philosophy texts, literature, songs, historical speeches, mining study data, and other observances. You have the personality of a spam-bot, programmed to find anything, no matter how tedious, to complain about BS.
ReplyDeleteWho's ideas should be taken seriously?
Before you go on again about Bobfans, understand that you are much more reflexive regarding voicing anti-Bob sentiments than any of his defenders doing the opposite.
So celebrate! You are the King (or Queen) of unthoughtfully speaking an opinion based upon Bob's.
Does that make you a hypocrite? I hope not, seeing how you think that completely discredits all of the hypocrite's conclusions.
But I am probably wrong. Whether you decide if the platforms from which Trump spoke are sufficiently high enough is a thoughtful critique, worthy of all of our time.

ReplyDeleteMy life became devastated when my husband sent me packing, after 8 years that we have been together. I was lost and helpless after trying so many ways to make my husband take me back. One day at work, i was absent minded not knowing that my boss was calling me, so he sat and asked me what its was all about i told him and he smiled and said that it was not a problem. I never understand what he meant by it wasn't a problem getting my husband back, he said he used a spell to get his wife back when she left him for another man and now they are together till date and at first i was shocked hearing such thing from my boss. He gave me an email address of the great spell caster who helped him get his wife back, i never believed this would work but i had no choice that to get in contact with the spell caster which i did, and he requested for my information and that of my husband to enable him cast the spell and i sent him the details, but after two days, my mom called me that my husband came pleading that he wants me back, i never believed it because it was just like a dream and i had to rush down to my mothers place and to my greatest surprise, my husband was kneeling before me pleading for forgiveness that he wants me and the kid back home, then i gave Happy a call regarding sudden change of my husband and he made it clear to me that my husband will love me till the end of the world, that he will never leave my sight. I am so excited sharing my testimony with everyone here about how i saved my marriage and got my husband back after a divorce..I am Natasha Hayes and i live in Los Angeles, CA. I'm a happily married to a lovely and caring husband ,with two kids.A very big problem occurred in my family seven months ago, between me and my husband .so terrible that he took the case to court for a divorce.he said that he never wanted to stay with me again, and that he didn't love me anymore. So he packed out of the house and made me and my children passed through severe pain. I tried all my possible means to get him back, after much begging, but all to no avail.and he confirmed it that he has made his decision, and he never wanted to see me again. So on one evening,as i was coming back from work,i met an old friend of mine who asked of my husband .So i explained every thing to him,so he told me that the only way i can get my husband back,is to visit a spell caster, because it has really worked for him too.So i never believed in spell, but i had no other choice, than to follow his advice. Then he gave me the email address of the spell caster whom he visited.{Unityspelltemple@gmail.com}. So the next morning,i sent a mail to the address he gave to me,and the spell caster assured me that i will get my husband back the next day. What an amazing statement!! I never believed,so he spoke with me,and told me everything that i need to do. Then the next morning, So surprisingly, my husband who didn't call me for the past{7}months,gave me a call to inform me that he was coming back.So Amazing!! So that was how he came back that same day, with lots of love and joy,and he apologized for his mistake, and for the pain he caused me and my children. Then from that day,our marriage was now stronger than how it were before,by the help of a spell caster Dr Unity. So, i will advice you out there, if you have any problem contact Dr Unity and i guarantee you that he will help you and you will be the next to share your testimony to every one in the world!!.
