We're starting with Aaron Sorkin this week. Can Russell's Paradox really be far behind?
Exegesis is defined as the critical examination of text, especially scripture. That isn't what anthropologists do, past or future. Anthropology is "the study of human societies and cultures and their development." Text is part of culture but the focus of anthropologists is on humanity not scripture (the received word of God). Anthropologists study religions comparatively as examples of human culture, not as divine revelation and not as history.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe Somerby is capable of taking an anthropological stance. Maybe he is complaining because anthropologists have done so. Hard to tell since he isn't clear about anything he says.
Next week he is going to complain about MS and dirty immigrants who bring down NAEP scores without actually telling us why he keeps focusing on such trivial material so persistently.
It isn't about journalism, plainly, and it isn't about education either. It isn't about racial injustice in schools and it isn't about philosophy -- he uses all of these things to batter liberals and advance conservative memes. If he were actually interested in any of the things he "touches on", his essays would be much different and certainly more interesting.
Somerby is only interested in racial justice in schools in the sense that he defends those who perpetuate it, like DJT, Roy Moore et al.

Neither Sorkin’s version of To Kill A Mockingbird nor Russell’s Paradox show irrationality.
Somerby just accused Sorkin of being a “woke” liberal because of his version of Harper Lee’s book. Is Bertrand Russell supposed to be “woke” too?
