What does performative virtue look like?

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2022

It looks like the Washington Post: What does performative virtue look like? More specifically, performative anti-racism? The attempt to pretend, to others or perhaps to yourself, that you actually care about matters of race?

We'd say that one such performance is currently being performed by the Washington Post in its endless series of reports about the relative lack of black head coaches in the NFL.

Why do we regard these reports as phony, faux—performative? We nay discuss your excellent question in the days or weeks ahead.

For today, we'll only say this—a photograph of Jerry Jones, age 14, has now touched off one of the dumbest sets of pseudo-discussions we think we've ever seen (though mainly on ESPN).

Today, Jerry Jones, age 80, is owner of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. We're embarrassed to think that David Maraniss is responsible for this performance by the Post, which fills us with fear and with dread.

The year was 1957; Jones was a ripe young 14. We're embarrassed by what the Post has done in its deathless report. We're worried for the future prospects of our soft-headed human race.

Hitting the links: For the original report by Maraniss and Jenkins, you can just click this. They start their report with the photograph of Jones at age 14.

For a truly bizarre "analysis" piece by Philip Bump, we'll suggest that you steel yourselves, then you can click here.

Is human judgment really this soft? We're beginning to think that it is!

Are you talking about virtue signaling, dear Bob?

...hey, you certainly should know what it looks like. That's pretty much all your brain-dead liberal co-tribesmen do...

  2. Why shouldn’t the Post talk about this?

  3. Speaking of performative virtue, Somerby’s genuine pity for all those mentally ill Republican nutcases is touching.

    No, truly. Truly touching.

  4. “Jones was a ripe young 14.”

We’re supposed to try to fathom Tucker Carlson’s twistedness by something that happened to him when he was 8, but overlook Jerry Jones at age 14 as an aberration.

    1. What is Jerry Jones doing that is similarly as twisted as Carlson? Your comment, as usual, makes no logical sense. You're stupid.

    2. Jerry Jones talks about increasing diversity, while in reality does nothing - there is little doubt Jones was affected by his racist relatives and community, just like Cucker's troubled past with his mother is no doubt a source for his atrociousness.

It was a brave move on Somerby's part to recognize the root cause of right wingers like Cucker lies in unresolved trauma; but an ugly racial past is a bridge too far for our "hero".

mh does not always catch everything, and mh does not seem to be particularly leftist, but they are smart and logical - miles more so than Somerby and his fanboy commenters. I appreciate mh, learn good stuff from them!

    3. Somerby wants to overlook Jones at 14 protesting the integration of his school as a youthful indiscretion (his bigotry) (he was only 14!!!), but also look to events when Carlson was 8 to “explain” his present beliefs, beliefs that Jones shares with Carlson. Dumbass.

    4. To be clear, I’m referring to 6:16 as the dumbass, since he was so civil.

    5. Idiot, what beliefs do they share?

    6. 11:13, They’re both conservatives, supporters of and big time donors to Republicans. Are you that ignorant that you didn’t know that?

      Delete
    7. You think the extent of the criticism here of Carlson is that he is a conservative donor to Republicans, therefore anything said about Carlson applies to anyone who donates to Republicans. Yes, I am that ignorant.

  5. “Is human judgment really this soft? We're beginning to think that it is!”

If human nature is what it is in Somerby’s view, unalterable, ie limited, irrational, and prone to bigoted tribalism, wouldn’t that suggest that each generation must teach the evils of the past and work to prevent their return as a way of opposing the ever-present bad parts of human nature?

    2. Not worrying is not a luxury one can even have a glimmer of hope for in our over commodified, dog eat dog, capitalistic society.

    1. No, apparently you and the Somerby fanboys are out in full force tonight.

  7. While Somerby can not explain the difference between performative and actual virtue, Dems are the only political party in America to support policies that help those that are oppressed, including those suffering from racial oppression - which runs rampant in our country, always has.

Meanwhile, the other major political party does nothing but obsess over how to get and maintain dominance over The Others.

And what flew over Somerby's head was that the article made clear that it is Jerry Jones and his cohort that are the ones offering performative virtue on the issue of race, all while being smug about his White privilege.

    1. Your excessively literal reading of Somerby is either a misguided move or willful ignorance.

    2. No one is excessively literal here except Somerby.

    3. You are. And mentally ill as well. You have serious mental problems as we all can see. You project them on Somerby with pathetic obsessiveness. You're a sad troll and a loser.

  8. Hey we better get Bob Ye’s comments about the Nazis because Bob needs some good examples if we suggest their is a problem with the guy.

  9. Cue the 4chan buzzwords and the heavy artillery: ITALICS.
    Somerby couldn't carry Bump's jockstrap.

  10. I guess “performative” is Bob’s word for
“virtue signaling” the fairly recent right
wing finger point to try and get you to
look away from their shitty conduct.

Are you being a good person just
to show off??? Sometimes that might
be true. But how would you really
    know? What difference would it
    really make?
Today the new darling of the Trumpies
gave a horror movie exhibition celebrating
the Nazis. A lot of liberals will object,
I hope they are not just being “performative.”
Liberals can and have hurt themselves
(At times) by dramatic posturing instead
of saying, say, “look, legally prosecuting
a woman who has had an abortion is
cruel and stupid, and I don’t want you
    spending my money on it.”
That doesn’t mean people who don’t
    take that approach are “performative.”
Bob had poisoned his own heart with
hateful bullshit. He’s spent so much
time excusing vile garbage as mental
illness he can’t make the most basic
    distinctions concerning right and
    wrong.
