...and hints of Caligula's horse: It's hard to get one's head around the inanity and the moral squalor surrounding the culture today.

It's true—Greg Gutfeld is still working his primetime beat on the Fox News Channel. That said, it isn't entirely clear what century this strange man thinks he's in.

Last night, he opened his program with a series of six (6!) jokes about (imagined) sexual misconduct by—who else?—Bill Clinton.

These priapic politicians today! There was no mention of Matt Gaetz or of Pete Hegseth. Gutfeld was entertaining the rubes with the greatest hits from the long-ago 1990s.

Question:

Has this 60-year-old termagant ever done a joke which turns on the sexual (mis)conduct of a fellow named Donald J. Trump? We can't say that he ever has! These are the wages of human inanity, but also of the modern "journalistic" practice known as "segregation by viewpoint."

As always, Gutfeld opened with a few minutes of jokes. After that, he delivered his opening issue-based monologue.

Last night, the handful of opening jokes was finished at 10:02. His monologue dealt with the horrific defeat the Democrats suffered this month.

Inevitably, this was the very first statement of his issue-based discussion:

GUTFELD (11/19/24): It's been fourteen days since the Democrats had to face the truth—they stink worse than the Capitol's men's room after Jerry Nadler's lunch of curry clam soup.

AUDIENCE: Whooaaa!

The misogyny and the fat jokes never stop on this primetime "cable news" program. On many nights, body parts and bodily waste will seem to be all this little guy knows.

Largely as a matter of choice, this seems to be all this idiot has. At some point, we'll make ourselves go into more detail, but we hope you'll excuse us today.

For the record, Gutfeld's squalor-based inanity has been a very big seller on the Fox News Channel. What Trump is currently doing may turn out to be much more consequential, but it's all a part of the cultural inanity which has been gripping our failing society for the past quite a few years.

Trump may end up as a Caligula—but with the New York Times averting its gaze, people like Gutfeld have spent years showing the way.

This idiocy goes on every night. Along with everyone else in Blue America, the Times keeps averting its gaze.

Full disclosure: The Internet Archive hasn't returned to full, round-the-clock taping of "cable news" programs.  For that reason, we can't link you to last night's Gutfeld! show.

  1. Maybe someone asked Gutfield how he can differentiate between neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and fine people on the Right, so he told a shitty joke to distract from the fact there is no way to tell.

  2. Gutfeld may be trans for all we know -- the word termagant is gender-specific to women who are scolds. Yet it was supposedly all the woke Democrats who were excessively scoldy, according to Somerby. How then does Gutfeld get away with scolding his red viewers night after night, without alienating them and sending them all over to vote for Harris? Inquiring minds want to know what Somerby is thinking when he says things that make no sense like this. You can't have this all ways at once.

    1. Anonymouse 6:52pm, the only thing relevant as to be worth saying is that if you look up the definition of termagant, “anonymouse” should be the first word in the first sentence.

    2. You get bent out of shape over bathrooms (with private stalls) but don’t care when Somerby pretends Gutfeld is a woman (to insult him). Your gender priorities are messed up.

    3. Anonymouse 8:30pm, yeah, it would be concerning to have a strange guy in the bathroom with me, in the way that some guy calling another guy “nagging bitch” is not.

Your bugaboos are all politically oriented. That’s why you have “gender priorities” and I have sensibilities.

Is his raping supposed to distract us from his bigotry, or is his bigotry supposed to distract us from his raping?

    11. Cecelia has been in a bathroom before. No one goes into the stall with you unless you invite them. It is private and only the sinks are shared. There are co-ed bathrooms all over the world.

    14. Should men be outraged if a woman uses their bathroom? If so, why? The only men going in women’s bathrooms are transgender, and they aren’t there to molest women. They’re trying to “be” a woman, in some sense. Why does this bother you so much? This ridiculous furor is also a reason why gendered bathrooms are becoming a thing of the past, especially if they’re single occupancy. Many people are just fed up with the conservative bullshit about it, and most women don’t have a problem with it because they aren’t hung up on this shit.

    15. Anonymouse 12:44am, yes, ifs just inconceivable why the sexes would have separate bathrooms. The anonymouse manta is that women are the pathetic victims of tyrannical men 24/7 in our culture, no one more so than Bob who shows his brutality and contempt for women in every word he writes. But by golly it’s just fine for women to walk into a bathroom where men are urinating at urinals (why not?), watching them in the mirrors, checking them out as they go into stalls. Men morph into hormone-free teddy bears via transgender ideology and what woman would mind to have a man hear her pee?

You’d throw women into volcanoes for this brain dead ideology. It’s not enough to be tolerant of transwomen, you must let them surpass and even injure you in sports. You must call them women or men when you know they are not those things. You must consider them to be like you as to a shared physicality and experience, although their chemistry and their societal experiences have most certainly had to differ from yours, and yours from theirs.

It’s a given that liberals are going to insult contrarians by calling them bigots AND homosexuals . Anonymices call me a tranny daily. It’s expected of you and it’s comical. However, the only way you’re going to get your druthers in making people dance to your Orwellian thinking in trans ideology is by force, duress, authoritarianism. You’ll have to do that. You’re up for it as readily as you’re up carrying out a decades long jihad on an “obscure” blog. It’s your religion and you’re anything if not feverous.

  3. "but it's all a part of the cultural inanity which has been gripping our failing society for the past quite a few years"

There is a lot more to our culture than what appears on Gutfeld or Fox. And there is a lot that is admirable, that reflects well on human beings, that is artistically sophisticated, literature, plays, music and dance, that transcends what red viewers who like Gutfeld can appreciate. Demeaning our culture by equating it with adolescent partisan propaganda is about Somerby's speed these days. Our society doesn't deserve this kind of evaluation, but Gutfeld does, and so does Somerby for ignoring the efforts of those others who produce the better works that the rest of us enjoy and think of when someone mentions culture.

Our society is not failing. Trump is incapable of doing anything but fail, and the rest of us will have to clean up his mess, as Biden did during his term in office. Somerby really needs to watch something else besides Fox 24/7. The world is bigger and better than he acknowledges with these morose essays day after day. We get it that he is chronically depressed and blames us for his condition. That doesn't make anything he says about our "failing" society true. There are pills he can take for whatever is making him so depressed he cannot read a good book and recognize that the red voters who put Trump into office are not all our society has to offer.

  4. Thom Hartmann outlines an argument that Trump's incompetent appointments are trojan horses put into place to destroy not only the agencies they head but also America's capacity to oppose Russia in its plan to regain control of Eastern Europe. Putin and Trump may be actively trying to destroy America's power. See if you find his arguments plausible:
