What's wrong with President Trump? At this site, we wish that Senator Hassan (D-NH) had let the witness continue.
In our view, Senator Hassan broke in too soon. That said, for better or worse, here's how the exchange began:
HASSAN (5/20/25): Secretary Noem, the White House deputy chief of staff recently said that the Trump administration is actively looking at suspending habeas corpus. Last week you were asked about this, and I want to clarify your position, because it's obviously really important to get this right.
So Secretary Noem, what is habeas corpus?
NOEM: Well, habeas corpus is a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country—
At that point, Hassan broke in. We wish she'd let Noem continue.
Where in the world was Noem's response going to go after that? In our view, it would have been more instructive to let her finish her presentation.
That said, at the point where Hassan interrupted, Noem seemed to be wildly off track. Below, you see our best attempt to record, overtalking be damned, where the exchange went from there.
Instant disclosure! In large part, this is the way the world starts to look when things have fallen apart:
NOEM (as shown above): Well, habeas corpus is a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country and suspend their right to—
HASSAN: No, let me stop you, ma'am==
NOEM: —and suspend their right to—
HASSAN: Habeas corpus— Excuse me. That's incorrect.
NOEM: President Lincoln used it—
HASSAN: Ah—excuse me...
At that point, Senator Hassan offered a fairly lengthy disquisition in which she answered her own original question. Eventually, Noem offered this:
"I support habeas corpus. I also recognize that the president of the United States has the authority under the Constitution to decide if it should be suspended or not."
"It has never been done without approval from Congress," Senator Hassan then said. She was thinking back to the day when this country still had a Congress!
(To watch the tape of this sad event, you can just click here.)
Personally, we wish Hassan had let Noem answer the original question without interruption. At the point where Hassan broke in, the secretary's presentation seemed to be crazily wrong. It would have been instructive to see where Noem's fuller answer would have gone.
Today, Noem's answer is being mocked all over Blue America. We think it would have been better if she'd been allowed to finish her statement, which, as it started out, seemed to be crazily wrong.
That said, we smarter people have a tendency to break in on the stumblebums. And uh-oh:
As of today, we've rather plainly reached the point where the stumblebums have decided that the time has come to fight back.
Some are genuine stumblebums; others are merely pretending. We'd assume that Secretary Rubio was representing the latter camp when he went on in the ridiculous manner shown below at a different Senate hearing.
Senator Van Hollen (D-MD) kept asking Rubio about the detention of Rumeyza Ozturk, the graduate student at Tufts who was snatched off the street and shipped to Louisiana for the offense of having co-authored an opinion column in a student newspaper.
Van Hollen kept asking about Ozturk. In a type of silent secession, Rubio kept refusing to answer:
RUBIO (5/20/25): If you tell me that you’re coming to the United States to lead campus crusades, to take over libraries and burn down buildings and commit acts of violence, we’re not going to let that happen.
VAN HOLLEN: Is that what Ms. Ozturk did? Is that what she did?
RUBIO: We’re not going to allow that—
VAN HOLLEN: Come on, Mr. Secretary, you’re just blowing smoke here now.
RUBIO: —and every single one of these [UNINTELLIGIBLE]— The bottom line is, if you’re coming here to stir up trouble on our campuses, we will deny you a visa. And if you have a visa, we’ll revoke it.
VAN HOLLEN: Does the First Amendment not apply in the United States?
RUBIO: And we’re going to do more! There are more coming. We’re going to continue to revoke the visas of people who are here as guests and are disrupting our higher education facilities. People are paying money—these kids pay money to go to school, and they have to walk through a bunch of lunatics who are here on—
VAN HOLLEN: Writing an op-ed for the student newspapers is disrupting the foreign policy of the United States?
RUBIO: I want to do more. I hope we can find more of these people.
VAN HOLLEN: That’s pathetic, Mr. Secretary!
RUBIO: In fact, the other day—the other day, some guys led a riot. I forgot what university it was. And I asked, "Please, can you find the arrest records of all the people that were arrested at that riot, at that campus?" Because if any of them have a visa, we’re going to revoke them.
Van Hollen was right; Rubio's relentless evasion truly was pathetic. But that's the way the world starts to look when things have fallen apart.
(To watch the videotape, click here.)
Van Hollen kept asking about the seizure of Ozturk. Rubio simply chose to rant about a different set of possible circumstances.
In a type of silent secession, he was refusing to submit to questioning from an agent of the former ruling tribe. That too is the way the world looks when things have fallen apart.
We would assume that Rubio was merely pretending to be a stumblebum during that non-exchange. To see how horrible a secession of that type can look, you should just take a look at the tape.
Hoe else can it look when things fall apart? It's as we noted in yesterday's report:
Over the weekend, the sitting president of the United States crazily returned to the ancient story in which Bill and Hillary Clinton were involved in a long string of murders.
On its face, that post was a manifestation of madness. So was what the gentleman told a joint session of Congress in this year's version of the State of the Union Address.
It's been a while since we posted the text. Here's the crazy presentation the president made in March, when the whole world was watching:
PRESIDENT TRUMP (3/4/25): We’re also identifying shocking levels of incompetence and probable fraud in the Social Security program for our seniors and that our seniors and people that we love rely on. Believe it or not, government databases list 4.7 million Social Security members from people aged 100 to 109 years old.
It lists 3.6 million people from ages 110 to 119. I don’t know any of them. I know some people that are rather elderly, but not quite that elderly.
(LAUGHTER)
3.47 million people from ages 120 to 129. 3.9 million people from ages 130 to 139.
3.5 million people from ages 140 to 149. And money is being paid to many of them, and we’re searching right now.
In fact, Pam [Bondi], good luck. Good luck. You’re going to find it.
But a lot of money is paid out to people because it just keeps getting paid and paid, and nobody does—and it really hurts Social Security and hurts our country.
1.3 million people from ages 150 to 159. And over 130,000 people, according to the Social Security databases, are age over 160 years old.
We have a healthier country than I thought, Bobby [Kennedy Jr.].
(LAUGHTER AND APPLAUSE)
Including, to finish, 1,039 people between the ages of 220 and 229; one person between the age of 240 and 249; and one person is listed at 360 years of age—
AUDIENCE MEMBER: Joe Biden!
(LAUGHTER)
THE PRESIDENT: —more than 100 years older than our country.
Did the president really believe what he seemed to be saying, or was he just pretending that night? How about the various stumblebums who sat in the chamber and laughed?
On its face, what he said that night was a manifestation of madness. Arguably, his post about the Clintons' large number of murders was even crazier still.
Question:
Ten weeks later, have you ever seen a major news org pursue what the president said back in March? Have you seen a serious inquiry from any journalist or any news org as to why he said what he said?
Similarly, have you seen a major news org ask why he offered last weekend's post about the Clintons' many murders? Such conduct seems to be a form of madness. Have you seen anyone ask what such bizarre conduct might mean?
The silence of those major orgs could also be seen as madness. The silence those orgs agree to maintain is one more way the world can look when things have fallen apart.
We offer this to raise a question— a question which is still going unasked. We referred to the question yesterday. That question would be this:
Is something wrong with President Trump? What explains the apparent madness of this powerful person?
By now, that's a fairly obvious question. When our news orgs keep refusing to ask it, that suggests that things have already fallen apart.
Yesterday, we offered this comparison:
As a general matter, our major news orgs failed to ask if something was wrong with President Biden. They're now adopting the same stance with respect to President Trump!
For today, we want to establish one point:
Almost surely, whatever is wrong with President Trump differs from what was apparently wrong with President Biden.
President Biden seems to have suffered a substantial cognitive decline. Whatever is wrong with President Trump—whatever may explain his peculiar behavior— we'll guess that it's something different.
That said, something seems to be wrong with President Trump—but so what? Our big news orgs are avoiding the topic, as they did in the case of President Biden.
Meanwhile, the sitting president's apparent madness is leading a revolt from below. The stumblebums are on the march. Some of them are genuine stumblebums, some are merely pretending.
A type of silent secession is underway. Rubio's refusal to answer—his version of that silent secession—could hardly have been more clear.
The current president's behavior seems to be characterized by strong elements of madness. Of course, it's always possible that he's just faking. Arguably, that would be a type of madness too.
Something seems to be wrong with the president. That post about the Clintons was madness. So too when our major news orgs agree to avert their gaze.
For the record, nothing is going to change this. These are the ways the world starts to look when a society loses its secret sauce—when things have fallen apart.

"GOP Lawmaker Refuses to Prove His Gender
ReplyDeleteMay 21, 2025 at 9:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard
Michigan state Rep. Jason Woolford (R) — who has sponsored legislation that requires children to “prove their gender” when asked — refused to answer when a colleague, Rep. Mike McFall (D), asked if he was transgender.
Said McFall: “I want to know, how does a 14-year old girl prove whether or not she is trans to a 50-year old coach?”
Somerby thinks the stumblebums (a highly disrespectful term for the folks Somerby claims to champion) should be allowed to complete their wildly inaccurate thoughts for the federal record during hearings. He does not consider that part of the point of such hearings is for the congress members to communicate their own instructions to the president's appointees, such as Noem.
Josh Hawley used his time as a congressman to beg Noem for help dealing with the aftermath of last Friday's tornados that devastated his state. There was no questioning, just a plea for help. Hassan was rightly reminding Noem of her duty under our constitution. She already knew that Noem was not doing that duty and not willing to go along with the constitution, which she was already violating to the point of being taken to court repeatedly.
What happens if you give "stumblebums" the last word? Some idiot on the right will think she spoke the truth. So the interruption and correction is both necessary and important.
Somerby's odd idea that Noem should have been allowed to spout more nonsense (eating up the limited time alotted to each congress memer) is perhaps why he never bothers to correct the misinformation he quotes here in his own blog. But the existence of misinformation is part of the problem with our democratic politics in this time when Republicans feel they can tell any lie they want, with impunity. Correcting those lies is now a duty of those who know the truth. Because Somerby so rarely corrects anything he quotes, he seems to disagree about the importance of truth and the need to correct the record. Whether that is a mistake or is deliberate because of his affinity for the right is unknowable except through the evidence of his actions.
Republicans pretend they do not know the difference between sex and gender, because that allows them to weaponize the issue, giving them a sense of dominance over others.
DeleteI am still waiting for Rump and Cubio to show us which "man" has an erect mushroom longer than 2 inches. Girth does not count. Otherwise how do we know they are not transgender?
Delete"...the limited time alotted to each congress memer...
DeleteA typo, I suppose, but I LIKE it!
This is so sad, 6:46 PM. Only a hostage chained, for years, in a basement would read Corby's AI-produced word-salads.
DeleteOr, wait, are you Corby's sock puppet? That would make more sense.
ReplyDelete"She was thinking back to the day when this country still had a Congress!"
Whoa, this is nice Democrat squealing. Perfect, thanks Bob.
Please keep draining the swamp, Mr. President. Don't stop, please. And Democrat squealing is a nice bonus.
Yes, this is another odd statement by Somerby. Does he really think we have no Democratic congress members? That the Republicans have a majority doesn't exclude Democratic representatives from speaking during their time. Disparaging remarks like his are unhelpful.
DeleteObviously, 10:37 is an example of those who want to own the libs, most likely to get revenge because some progressive scold called them a racist or a bigot. What’s almost touching is the innocent credulity, the belief that Trump is draining the swamp. I worry what will happen when this innocent belief is crushed.
Delete
DeleteHmm. But if Mr. President wasn't draining the swamp, would you idiots be foaming at the mouth 24/7? Surely something is being done to the swamp you're so fond of, no?
Great news for those who love Trump telling Republican voters to go fuck themselves, my contract to post about Republican voters on social media has been renewed for three more years.
DeleteLet's get real.
DeleteSomebody has to do it.
Go look in a mirror to see who is foaming at the mouth. Talk about an unhinged magat loser tossing up uninformed nonsense. Get a real job as a podcast influencer paid by Russia, Russia, Russia. Preach to you Putin informed brothers and sisters. Sad.
Delete
DeleteYou don't need to look in a mirror, 2:24 PM; just read your own degenerate drivel @2:24 PM. And immediately you'll know who is foaming at the mouth.
More Mao Mao poo poo. Boring. Demented. Sad.
DeleteCope, Soros-bot.
DeleteSomebody has to do it.
DeleteCope, dimbulb.
DeleteTrumptard, you're not getting older. You're getting better (and more trumptarded).
Delete"Something seems to be wrong with the president. That post about the Clintons was madness. So too when our major news orgs agree to avert their gaze."
ReplyDeleteThe reason we know about Trump's retweet of that ugly Clinton video is because the press reported it. None of us liberals are reading Truth Social. The video, promoted by Trump, was truly deplorable, just as Hillary correctly labeled such behavior back during her campaign. As I recall, Somerby called her statement itself deplorable, arguing that she shouldn't have told the truth about Trump's followers. What has changed?
I agree with Bob: Hassan should have let Noem ramble on incoherently. Nonetheless, here you have, ladies and gentlemen, officials at the highest levels of our government are woefully ignorant of the most basic tenets of our democracy and legal system. Grifters and various flavors of conmen are faces of this administration. Behind them, in the shadows, are more unpleasant and likely dangerous characters. They have in their eyesight to completely refashion the state that has evolved over a couple of centuries into their phantasmagorical vision.
ReplyDeletePS: Countdown to when Trump emerges and declares that Noem was correct and Habeas Corpus is a power that president has to imprison anyone he wants.
The problem is, only we care. There is no shame in maggot-land.
DeleteNo point in letting Noem go on; it is clear that they have been instructed to not answer the questions (even if they could) and just ‘flood the zone’. This is what flooding the zone looks like.
DeleteI think it would be better to letter her go on and on, flopping around like a fishing gasping for air
DeleteI agree, Noem had already deeply embarrassed herself, so there was no need to let her filibuster on. Hassan handled it well, and was followed by other Dems exposing Noem's ignorance and incompetence.
DeleteNot woefully ignorant, willfully ignorant. You usually do better Ilya!
DeleteI would've liked to have had Noem continue to demonstrate her utter ignorance. On the other hand, like Anon@11:28 points out, the cult doesn't care.
DeleteI still stand by my prediction that Trump will claim that Noem was correct in her answer.
Not woefully ignorant, willfully ignorant.
DeleteI am going to put myself in an usual position and defend Noem. I think that she is genuinely ignorant. I mind you that I am not denying that she is malevolent as well, but in this particular she just demonstrated what an ignoramus she was.
I like the cut of your jib Ilya, but it ain't ignorance, it is propaganda. Notice how every single one of them say yea, we follow the rule of law, but what is that really until my lawyer lets me know? Just fascist pigs, the whole lot. So glad it is working out for them.

ReplyDelete"...the White House deputy chief of staff recently said that the Trump administration is actively looking at suspending habeas corpus."
So, all this hysteric manic-panic and all this high drama because deputy chief of staff said that the administration is looking at suspending habeas corpus?
Ha-ha. Nice going, snowflakes.
Herr Miller runs the joint, maggot-breath. The same place that is giving the middle finger to the Supreme Court 9-0 decision. Fuck off.
DeleteCope, snowflake.
DeleteFuck off, fascist maggot
DeleteBoo-hoo.
DeleteI haven't seen this much crying since drag queens started protecting toddlers from the sexual predation of the Republican Congressional caucus.

Could Andrew Witty be in line to become the next Republican US Senator. Rick Scott must be so envious.

UnitedHealth Group, one of America’s biggest corporations and a member of the exclusive Dow Jones Industrial Average, is suddenly unraveling.
The crisis engulfing UnitedHealth hit a crescendo this week when CEO Andrew Witty stepped down abruptly for “personal reasons.”
UnitedHealth also swiftly abandoned its financial guidance, blaming skyrocketing medical costs.
And then The Wall Street Journal dropped the hammer, revealing that UnitedHealth is under federal criminal investigation for possible Medicare fraud.
The developments have stunned investors, triggering a dramatic loss of confidence. UnitedHealth’s (UNH) stock has lost half its value – a staggering $288 billion – in the span of a month. Its share price plunged on Thursday to its lowest level since April 2020, during the height of the pandemic.
Back when we had competent people auditing our government, when we had Inspector Generals and career bureaucrats, they found that all the waste/fraud/abuse in Medicare/Medicaid/SS was a tiny fraction of their budgets, and was all done on the provider side, not by beneficiaries.
DeleteAs it turns out, the waste/fraud/abuse is being committed by fat cats, Republicans and right wing corporations.
Trump got rid of all those checks on power; Trump brought the swamp into power.
Yes, this is so exciting. When republicans find real fraud, they rush to make the fraudster a US Senator.
DeleteExactly, fraud is like the draft for Republicans, it is a way to know who to recruit.
DeleteSounds like they need to contribute to a presidential library fund.
DeleteBond market is in chaos, debt is exploding, stock buybacks may have run their course for the moment, stock are tumbling.
ReplyDeleteGood day to short sell.
Let's pass that Republican tax cut for the rich, increasing taxes for the middle class, and cutting services for the needy, that way we can accelerate the destruction of the US so Russia and China can become more dominant.
DeleteIt is good to have the US president as a puppet that is corrupt and a criminal, makes looting the US so much easier.
Excuse me, for now I will crawl into my safe space and cry.
DeleteYou have safe space?
DeleteAs Scotty B says, we're just going to have to eat it.
DeleteChristopher Rufo's ass.
DeleteTrump accepts Trojan Horse plane from Qatar (crickets from Somerby, one of the few holdout fans of the ancient myth), easing the work/life balance for our enemies' spies. Now Russia et al can sit back and laugh, as Trump does their work for them, providing Open Access to all of our secrets and classified material.
DeleteIn related news, it turns out the top 10 billionaires have increased their wealth in the past year by $365 billion, at the expense of everyone else as the rest of us struggle more and more every day.
Turns out, Trump's "populism" was just a come on, a way to sucker the rubes.

DeleteThese are dark days for Democrats.
ReplyDeleteMore accurately, these are dark days for freedom lovers.
DeleteFreedom lovers? George W. Bush? The last time I heard that term he was throwing it around as an excuse to start an illegal war. Freedom lovers? Wtf does that mean? Please do explain.
DeleteBush is a Republican, the opposite of a freedom lover silly.
ReplyDeleteYou sound like a severely retarded child.
DeleteYou sound uninformed. What President rolled back civil liberties in the USA more than Jr.? I realize rump's handlers are working overtime to make him worse, but Jr. laid the groundwork. Constitution hating radicals, the modern Republican Party. And they are proud of it. And don't get me started on what God awful Patriots these modern Republicans are. They are the exact opposite of American Patriots. Hope you learned a thing or two.
DeletePlease do explain how Republicans are freedom lovers when Republicans start, as you say, "illegal wars"?
DeleteSo, you are a severely retarded child.
DeleteAn eloquent explanation if there ever was one. So you got nothing then.
