O’Reilly heaps praise on Maddow: Everyone is dumb on occasion, as everyone understands.
Yes, it was dumb to ask for jokes about that Romney family photo. When we’re using our heads, we don’t do that.
That said, we were glad to see Bill O’Reilly take a walk on the mild side last week. He spoke up for Harris-Perry:
O'REILLY (1/2/14): Now Miss Perry has apologized to the Romney family, but this seems to be a never-ending saga over at MSNBC.We aren’t inclined to think that Harris-Perry meant to be malicious either. That said, it’s nice to see someone say something nice from across tribal lines.
Joining us from Washington, Miss Laura Ingraham. So I don't think Miss Harris-Perry meant to be malicious here, unlike Martin Bashir and Ed Schultz and his comments directed to you, but she and her guests were clearly mocking the Romney family, who did a good thing. What say you?
Ingraham was a bit less upbeat about Harris-Perry. But later on, look where she took the discussion:
INGRAHAM: Brian Roberts, the CEO of Comcast, is a pretty big Democrat donor...So I think their affinity is to the left. These are the tapes we liberals aren’t shown when The One True Liberal Channel starts playing its BillO cards. We aren’t encouraged to see this.
But again I'll ask this question of Mr. Roberts: How is this helping liberalism? If you're a liberal, right, you want an effective liberal. And someone like Rachel Maddow, I mean I don't agree with her on a lot of issues—
O'REILLY: No, no and she I'm glad you brought her up. She is responsible, she makes her point, she believes what she says. She's not malicious.
INGRAHAM: No, I don't think so.
O'REILLY: And—and why can't you hire a few more of those kind of people?
If Lisa DeMoraes is getting it right, Glenn Beck also defended Harris-Perry. DeMoraes, once of the Washington Post, is now at Deadline Hollywood.
She told the story like this:
DEMORAES (1/7/14): The drumbeat from the right eventually cost Baldwin and Bashir their gigs, but Harris-Perry may be spared the same fate—because Glenn Beck has come to her rescue. “Going after children, as she said, is not fair game, but that wasn’t her intent,” Beck said in defense of Harris-Perry. “I truly believe that our side, now, is refusing to see her for what she is, and we are engaging in the worst kind of political destruction...I fear this time, our side sees blood in the water and is going after her and MSNBC. It’s more wrong than anything she said here, especially since their intent is to hurt and destroy, and hers was not...If this is her big screw-up, she’s way ahead of me as a human being.”DeMoraes didn’t provide a source or a tape. At Mediaite, Matt Wilstein did.
Nothin to see here folks: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/09/nyregion/christie-aide-tied-to-bridge-lane-closings.html?smid=fb-share&_r=0ReplyDelete
Nice try, but your link is to a piece in the New York Times by Kate Zernike, who has been exposed here at TDH as part of the "galloping Dowdism" at the Times. She is hardly an example of the beautiful cross-tribe nicety Somerby finds at FOX.Delete
How about the WSJ.Delete
Anon @ 11:35.Delete
Just like a troll to divert attention from the point of this story,
and close the lanes of commentary by unclean vile behavior
which makes me not tell my friends I read this blog.
Losers, guess what? The volume of traffic on the bridge has nothing to do with this story. Traffic across the bridge was not affected, only access to the bridge from the town of Fort Lee.
This time-killing, exciting diversion tells you nothing about the substance of this currently pointless story. Rachel figured you wouldn't see that.
Anon @ 12:27Delete
Nice try. But we TDH readers alreay know about the WSJ reporter thanks to Somerby:
"Maddow introduced Ted Mann, who has reported—and apparently misreported—various aspects of this story for the Wall Street Journal."
Very shaky comment.
Now that wingers are praising Maddow - perhaps the blogger can get past her sweating.ReplyDelete
He said she was perspiring.Delete
Real men sweat. Youngish scribes with impeccable educational credentials perspire.Delete
"Newly obtained emails show that a deputy chief of staff to Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey gave a signal to close lanes to the George Washington Bridge, in what appeared to be political retribution. "
Appearances aren't everything. Except when TDH notes what a writer or TV personality "appears" to be saying.Delete
Hmmmm… and just WHY would O"Reilly and Ingram have a soft spot for Harris Perry? A few years ago, no one had heard of Perry. Then, in a piece rightfully drubbed by The Daily Howler, Perry wrote some truly nonsensical bullshit that couldn't have been more calculated to make liberals look bad if She had tried.ReplyDelete
And suddenly, in the wildly "liberal" world of MSNBC, She has her own show. Her piece about how white progressives are racists because they went easy on Clinton and abandoned poor (Obama) served as her gateway into TV Land, as surely as Maddow's worshipful praise of Chris Matthews put the ink on her million dollar contract. And if that's not going to win you a place in the heart of Bill O"Reilly, nothing will.
When it comes to these matters of civility, no one plays you for a rube like "The Daily Howler."
Why should what O'Reilly said in praise of Maddow come in for praise or surprise from Somerby. He himself said it best just last month:ReplyDelete
"Rachel Maddow is Fox."
Uh....because Somerby is saying that O'Reilly was playing outside the tribal cut-throat coliseum that is so endlessly promoted on cable tv?Delete
That we should take a minute to note when this happens, and perhaps encourage the notion that we might actually solve some things by acting like that?
I guess it depends on what your definition of "is" is.Delete
yes.. and this is the same Daily Howler who had kanipshins when O'Donnell gave a modestly polite intro to Tony Blankley on his show. So one side gets credit for not going tribal while the other is vilified.Delete
That Christie story pushed by sweating,"dumbnified" (what the FUCK is "dumbNify"? what is that "n" doing there?) Maddow seems to have major major legs:
From smutty Salon:
"New Jersey State Senator Barbara Buono blasted Chris Christie Wednesday as a “charlatan” running a “paramilitary operation,” and urged a federal criminal investigation into his administration’s role in allegedly retaliatory lane closures that caused a traffic nightmare for Fort Lee, New Jersey. Buono, whom Christie defeated by 21 points in his gubernatorial re-election campaign last year, told Salon that messages released Wednesday “should remove any scintilla of doubt in anyone’s mind that the Governor was fully aware and directed it.”
Those e-mails and text messages, including one in which Christie Deputy Chief of Staff Bridget Anne Kelly told Christie Port Authority appointee David Wildstein, “Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee,” have further fueled suspicions that the lane closures constituted retaliation against Fort Lee’s Democratic Mayor for not endorsing Christie. After Wildstein texted that he was “smiling” but felt “badly about the kids” affected by bus delays, Kelly responded, “They are the children of Buono voters.” (A spokesperson for Christie did not immediately respond to Salon’s request for comment.)"
Every picture I have seen of Maddow shows her in pants. Clearly she has legs. I am not sure if they are major major.Delete
Perhaps you have seen photos I missed in smutty Salon.
what is the "b" doing there?
This Christie thing is looking bad for "The Daily Howler." The Passion of The Chirstie?"Delete
The only way to understand the latter-day incoherence of TDH -- Maddow bad! O'Reilly good for praising Maddow! -- is in pathological terms.ReplyDelete
Our Leader apparently has no views or prejudices of his own (at least, none he'll admit to), and will happily throw over any previous assertions of principle in the interests of a current protestation of virtue. To wit, he'll argue ANY point, provided he can disparage the supposed stupidity -- preferably of those employed to play liberals on TV -- of someone else. The closer that objects views are to Somerby's own (at least, those he'll occasionally admit to) the better. So Diane Ravitch, the only sane voice on education in the public square, is the worst sinner of all because she's indifferent to the suffering of black children. (Or was that someone else? Maddow?)
And while Chris Christie (to acknowledge the headlines) is entitled to every benefit of the doubt, even to the point of absurdity, a liberal who uses big words is a proven miscreant.
I really do think somebody should put Somerby on TV. This sort of spectacle might actually be interesting, for 3 weeks, as long as they don't claim he's a "liberal spokesperson". More like "post-political pundit", where no actual policy is ever discussed.
If Somerby appears on TV will Somerby then later call himself "a liberal leader"?Delete
Or perhaps your pathology is that you are unable to understand the distinction between saying some one is guilty of a wrong conclusion in Ravitch's case, from saying that there is yet no smoking gun in what could be a crime.Delete
That's certainly a condition that is rife in the eternally warring set.
Excellent diagnosis from Dr. Mc, the Ginny W. Pugh of the commentary class.Delete
Yeah, the best response to someone saying the only way to describe incoherence is in "pathological terms", is "Physician, heal thyself."Delete
Dunno. I'm kind of partial to "suck a tailpipe." See Trollmes, below.Delete
Damn that "finishing school" influence!Delete
I thought I read you went to Vanderbilt.Delete
That doesn't surprise me in the least.Delete
No, I think she said she built a van and was in a pie fight.Delete
What's next? Zimmerman? Allowing these trolls is as insensitive to thoughtful readers as Melissa Harris-Perry's comments about Mr. Romney's grandson.ReplyDelete

Whether it's the election race for NYC mayor or Port Authority shenanigans, TDH should stay far away from NY/NJ politics. Bob doesn't seem to have much knowledge of the players or the issues. Just a helpful tip from another long-time dissatisfied blog reader.

God! You two are a pair, Confused & Trollmes.
"We don't need evidence, we know how Jersey works!!!"
Fucking idiot troll douchebags. Please, suck a tailpipe.
I guess the apologies will start rolling in any second now???
My dear Trollmes, next time you see your pal, Confused, please convey to him my sincerest of apologies. Now, given my own family history, I’d identify with his comment and I intended to say positive and celebratory things about it. I am so sorry to have lumped him in with you.Delete
Yes - unlike dastardly librulz, Zimmerman cares about the education of black kids.ReplyDelete
We don't need you to do that.Delete
