TUESDAY: Conrad had the heart of darkness!

TUESDAY, MARCH 10, 2026

We have those programs at Fox: Joseph Conrad had the realm he chose to explore in Heart of Darkness. The leading authority on the novella thumbnails it as shown

Heart of Darkness

Heart of Darkness is an 1899 novella by Polish-British novelist Joseph Conrad, in which sailor Charles Marlow tells the story of his assignment as steamer captain for a Belgian company in the African interior. The novel is widely regarded as a critique of European colonialism in Africa, whilst also examining the themes of power dynamics and morality. Although Conrad does not name the river on which most of the narrative takes place, at the time of writing, the Congo Free State—the location of the large and economically important Congo River—was a private colony of Belgium's King Leopold II. Marlow is given an assignment to find Kurtz, an ivory trader working on a trading station far up the river, who has "gone native" and is the object of Marlow's expedition.

And so on from there.

As far as we know, Heart of Darkness remains a challenging work. This week, we've been asking you to focus on a pair of Fox News Channel programs in our morning reports.

This is depressing, tiring work. It raises questions about life inside the zone known as Silo Red, but also about life inside the ramparts of Silo Blue.

This is tiring work. Or maybe it's just from setting our clocks ahead! It could always be something like that!

  1. Heart of Darkness has nothing to do with Gutfeld, Fox, or Trump. It is Somerby’s way of filling space, padding an essay about nothing. Why does he need to do this?

If Somerby is tired, he should rest, not watch Fox. A life well lived does not involve watching Gutfeld on TV, whether Somerby is red or blue. Calling our media choices “silos” adds nothing to anyone’s understanding of today’s politics.

  2. Trump, in another act of cruelty, is limiting and taxing money sent by Somalian immigrants to family in Somalia. This is money from their own paychecks sent to help family live better lives, buy food and clothes, pay rent, pay for schooling and health care. These immigrants in the US earned that pay through their own hard work, as immigrants have done for 250 years of US history. This is evil.

Somerby could call out such evil, but instead he babbles about silos. I am sending my own extra money to Clinton’s Global Initiative, as a protest against Somerby’s stupid insinuations. It is better than buying gold plated sneakers or phones that don’t work, the way the other silo does.

    2. Anonymouse 4:49pm: “Somerby could call out such evil, but instead he babbles about silos.”

Sweetheart, who are you kidding? There’s not a soul in the universe who believes that you’d find Bob’s remarks on Somalis to be interesting, or accurate, or germane. That’s not in your job description.

      Padam
    3. Easy to say, given that Somerby will never mention Trump's bias against Somalis, much less deplore it.

      Padam
    4. Anonymouse 5:52pm, yes, it’s very easy for me to say that your motives are what they are. I just wish Polymarket would lay odds on it.

    6. Anonymouse 6:06pm, Bob calls it like he sees it on both sides, Miss Apparatchik.

      Padam
    7. Another right wing lie. He is advancing talking points not expressing opinions.

      Padam
    8. Anonymouse 6:30pm, no, he’s a liberal who critiques both teams. For that sin, someone has hired you to call him names.

      Padam
    9. He is no liberal.

      Padam
    10. Now tell us who hired DiC to counter Somerby and worship Trump every day.

      Padam
    11. Anonymouse 6:56pm, classic anonymouse thinking.

      Padam
    12. Makes as much sense as you saying someone hires people to criticize Somerby.

      Padam
    13. Anonymouse 7:05pm, it’s the only way your behavior makes sense.

      Padam
    14. On the other hand, DiC is the ultimate Trump apologist, as are you. Inexplicable especially at this blog.

      Padam
    15. Anonhmouse 8:19pm, no, David and I have both.criticized and agreed with Trump at times. That normal behavior. It’s ordinary behavior that you literally never exhibit with Somerby. Dead giveaway.

    16. David is two faced. He would crawl naked through a Paris sewer to kiss Trump’s corrupt ass

      Padam
    17. Anonymouse 8:33pm, David doesn’t always agree with Trump and you say that’s a pretense on his part. However, anonymices literally never agree with Bob or compliment him and we’re supposed to think that’s normal. You’re the pretender and shill.

      Padam
    18. Trump is mentally ill and the US is going to hell because of it. Major Somerby premise. You both reject it.

      Padam
    19. What liberal hasn't agreed with Trump that Republican voters are losers, and should be treated with contempt?
Oh yeah. Bob Somerby. I almost forgot.

    20. Anonymouse 9:05pm, so? I know this is unfathomable to you, but there was a time when people actually disagreed on politics and still managed to like and admira contrarians who they found likable and admirable.

      Padam
    21. BTW- this approach to political contrarians is why Somerby says that we are already in a civil war.

      Padam
    22. Was that before or after Newt Gingrich?

      Padam
    23. Cecelia,
You can still admire and respect me, even though you don't agree that every single Republican voter is a piece of shit.
It's only your tribalism, per Bob Somerby, that's stopping you.

      Padam
    24. Anonymouse 9:20pm, my guess is after.

      Padam
    25. Anonymouse 9:26pm, I do find myself liking and admiring you. Goodness knows you must really need the money.

  3. Heart of Darkness was supposedly the inspiration for the plot of Apocalypse Now, the film about the Vietnam war. Perhaps Somerby is working up to some parallel with Iran bombing, but there is little similarity there historically. But that never bothers Somerby. War is war, amirite! Being tired leads to lazy pseudo-thinking, apparently. And Lincoln is just like Trump because there were blues and grays in the civil war and now we have reds and blues! Heavy, man!

    BalasPadam
  4. "President Donald Trump said the US Navy chose to sink an Iranian frigate, killing more than 100 sailors last week, because it was “more fun” than capturing the vessel, even though the ship posed no threat.

Though death tolls vary, Iran’s state media organization, the Islamic Republic News Organization, reported on Sunday that 104 crew members were killed in the attack and that 32 others were injured when a US submarine torpedoed the Iranian warship IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean on March 4 as it departed from the Milan Peace 2026 naval drills hosted in India.

The Dena was more than 2,000 miles away from the Persian Gulf when it was attacked, far from the hostilities unleashed last weekend when the US and Israel launched a war against Iran. Contradicting US claims, Iranian and Indian officials have said it was not armed."

This is a war crime, to which Trump has admitted. I am ashamed that this man is our president and that our country is engaged in such activities. This is akin to the bombing of the girls school. This is evil.

    BalasPadam
    Balasan
    1. @5:30 - Some people's definition of "war crime" is "an act committed by the US or Israel." I don't see you complaining about a whole laundry list of atrocious acts
-- Massacring, raping, kidnapping, and torturing 1000 innocent civilians at a music festival.
-- Sending missiles to attack non-military targets in a bunch of countries.
-- Killing 3200 of their own citizens who are out demonstrating
      - Using one's own citizens as human shields by intentionally putting military installations in civilian areas.
-- Putting military installations in hospitals and schools

      Padam
    2. There is international law defining war crimes. This is not a matter of political opinion. I hope Trump is eventually tried in the Hague (international court) and put in prison. Other people's crimes do not excuse Trump.

      Padam
    3. David in Cal, who would like you to believe comparing Israel's actions against Palestinians with the actions of the Iran is anti-semitism, is just asking you to compare Israel's actions against Palestinians with the actions of Iran.
      Is that so bad?

      Padam
    4. Any nation like Iran, who believe "border security allows us to kill our own citizens who question government agents" should be bombed into the stone age.

      Padam
    5. Yes, that justifies killing 120 school girls.

      Padam
    6. @5:48 - Are you aware that in WW2 the US sank innumerable Japanese non-military ships. Are FDR and HST war criminals?

      Padam
    7. We are not at war with Iran.

      Padam
    8. David -- Yes, that would've been considered war crimes under the Geneva convention, which was signed in 1949.

      Padam
    9. Surely, dickhead must be referring to the Second World Excursion

      Padam
    10. Ilya - AI disagrees with you
The Geneva Conventions do not specifically ban the sinking of non-military ships, but they establish rules for the treatment of shipwrecked individuals and require parties to a conflict to assist survivors. Violating these rules can constitute a war crime if the obligations to rescue and care for the wounded and shipwrecked are not met.

      Padam
    11. We are not at war with Iran, you depraved inhuman bastard. Japan launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, we launched a surprise strike on Iran.

      Padam
    12. You missed the point: the Geneva convention was not signed until 1949.

      Padam
    15. Ilya -- OK I got your point. My point is that for the US to sink a non-military ship was not a war crime in any sense of the word.

Many people just repeat things that someone else said, even things that could be instantly debunked. I think it was Cecil Adams who called these people -- people whose comments had no intelligent thinking behind them -- "NPCs".

      Padam
    16. I think its cool that we can sink a ship with torpedoes since it hasn't been done in awhile, and it's nice to know we haven't lost our touch. This isn't going to be a messy conflict unless you consider its effect on the US and world economy. In which case it will likely be shitshow. The Chinese are laughing at us. Once we've taken on Cuba after this, maybe Greenland and NATO will begin taking us seriously.

      Trump campaigned on rejecting it.

      Padam
    16. Anonhmouse 8:55pm, sorry, but no president has ever campaigned on the notion of there being nothing that justifies going to war. That’s just the argument of a 12-year-old.

    28. Part of the reason Republican administrations are so bad for the economy is the amount of money wasted on wars for which there are no national defense imperatives. At least there was some debate about the significance of the aluminum tubes, and Congress gave Bush 2 the authority for his disastrous blunder. Here they can't even get their stories straight about the urgent necessity for this war, because there was none. And without consulting Congress, it is inherently illegal. As has occurred in Venezuela, the regime is unchanged, but in this case the new leader has a dead father, wife and daughter to think about as he makes his plans for the future.

Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) follows sailor Charles Marlow’s journey up the Congo River to find Kurtz, a renowned ivory trader who has gone rogue. Witnessing the brutal corruption of Belgian colonialism, Marlow finds Kurtz has become a tyrannical, god-like figure to the locals, ultimately dying after uttering "The horror! The horror!"
