Former Rhodes Scholar at her best!

FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 2012

Draining a pair of three-pointers: Rachel Maddow, Our Own Rhodes Scholar, is at her best when she’s all by herself.

When get can just sit there and clown, treating her viewers like fools in the process. That’s what she did at the start of last evening’s show, pleasuring us about Romney:
MADDOW (3/15/12): Mitt Romney has won the wealthiest sliver of the electorate in 14 of the 16 states for which we know that kind of information about the voters. The only states where he has not won the wealthiest sliver are Alabama and Mississippi.

But remember, he got creamed in Alabama and Mississippi! He lost everybody there. He didn’t even come in second place in Alabama and Mississippi. He came in third in both of those states.
Really? Romney “got creamed” in Alabama and Mississippi? It felt real good, but was it true? These were the results in Mississippi:
Mississippi Republican primary:
Santorum: 33 percent
Gingrich: 31 percent
Romney: 30 percent
When Romney loses a state by three, he got creamed. But how about when he wins by three?

In that case, three points is very close. Here was Rachel, posting the results from Michigan and Ohio just last week:
MADDOW (3/7/12): In both those big important bellwether-y states, Rick Santorum gave Mitt Romney a run for his money.

But Ohio and Michigan also show really clearly I think the two most important dynamics, the two biggest stories in the Republican Party’s efforts to pick their presidential nominee this year.

Look at the two races. Look at—looook! How close!

This was the result in Ohio, and this was the result in Michigan. Sooooo close, right? And in a race that close, you start thinking about all the little things that could have made a difference. If you picked up a point along this group, or if turnout had been two points higher among this group. When it is this! close! any marginal change in any one group of any reasonable size can make all the difference.
Rachel went on and on about how close the two states were. And yes, she said the word “bellwether-y;” this helped us see how clever she is. She also drew out her words in some of the ways we have shown, helping us appreciate how close those races were.

The whole time she was telling us this, the Michigan results were on the screen, showing that Romney had won the state by three points.

Go ahead—watch the tape. At the start, you can enjoy Rachel as she talks and talks about herself, helping us learn to enjoy her more. The passage we have quoted starts around 2:45.

At any rate, here’s the new math: If Romney loses a state by three, that means he got creamed. But if he wins a state by three, that means it was soooo close.

For many years, when we watched Hannity, we wondered what his viewers thought when they kept getting handed this type of ridiculous shit. Now, we often ask the same question when we watch our own cable channel.

For further viewing enjoyment, watch Rachel on last evening’s show when she was no longer all by herself. When she got keister handed to her by the world’s biggest climate denier.

  1. To get creamed=to get beaten badly.

    Maddow is a clown indeed.

  2. It's good to see you standing up for Romney. He definitely needs your support. Santorum is coming on strong and even mentioned Seamus yesterday. Gail Collins and the liberals are having a strong effect on the primary.

  3. I admit this appears to be an absurd double standard (and it is). But on the other hand, the story of the Republican race so far is Romney's inability, despite having far more money and elite endorsements and the only candidate (other than Ron Paul) to have won an election in the last decade, to close the deal with Republican voters. So if he wins by 3 against a goon like Gingrich and a wacko like Santorum it is awfully close (especially in a place like Ohio where he would figure to be strong). Plainly, he did not get creamed in MS and AL (where he would figure to be weak) but given his other advantages you would think at this point he could put it away.

  4. Maddow's message is simple. Liberals are winners, conservatives are losers. I turned her off in the middle of the 2010 mid-term elections when she kept chortling about Democrat victories.
Democrats got creamed in 2010. I haven't tuned in to her since.
Thanks, Bob for showing why that was a good decision.
As far as MSNBC election coverage, their pinnacle was in August 2008 when Keith Olbermann told Joe Scarborough "Why don't you get a shovel?"

  5. Gotta have a Get Rachel post every day! Coming in third in two states, no matter how close one of them is -- The Howler played us for fools by hiding the fact that the other third-place loss was by almost 6 points -- is arguably "getting creamed," especially to someone who doesn't pretend to be even handed.

There's too much valuable going on here. Scraping the bottom of the barrel to fuel pet peeves only detracts from it by enabling the "crank" label to be used by the legitimate targets, including the liberal heroes who really aren't. Keep it to real stuff.

  6. Urban Legend, Somerby did not say that Maddow got it wrong on Alabama. Somerby said it's not true that he got creamed in Alabama and Mississipi. That's why he only posted results for Mississippi. You are a member of the zombi tribe who never criticizes journalists who make you feel good. Did Romney "get creamed" in Mississippi? Why didn't you say something like, "Maddow only fu**ed up half of the state results she mentioned," insterad of blindly defending her? You hyperpartisan fool.

  7. Yes, I am a member of the zombi tribe. Good to see how much you think for yourself. Original language, even!

Somerby has plenty of completely valid negative stuff to say about Maddow and most of the other liberal pundits. Dredging for marginal cases like this only makes it too easy for the targets to dismiss him. But then, if he makes you feel good, I guess that doesn't matter.

  11. Hi this is somewhat of off topic but I was wanting to know
if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.

I'm starting a blog soon but have no coding know-how so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  13. Definitely consider that that you stated.
Your favourite reason seemed to be at the web the easiest factor to take into accout of.
I say to you, I definitely get annoyed whilst other people consider worries that they just don't understand about.

You controlled to hit the nail upon the highest and outlined out the
whole thing without having side-effects , other people could take a signal.
Will probably be again to get more. Thank you
