TUESDAY: Should the Democratic Party Six...

...have issued that now-famous taped statement?  Should the Democratic Party Six have issued that now-famous statement?

The statement has triggered the usual fury. This has been a busy time, but we hope to address that important question tomorrow afternoon, on our struggling nation's Day of Enormous Thanks Eve.

We must not be enemies, a president once famously said.

  2. Turns out, the way to keep Trump from threatening to sue you, is to accuse him of raping children.

  3. The statement, in and of itself, is pretty anodyne. Unsurprisingly, it has provoked a bizarre, unhinged reaction. It is entirely possible that that's what they were aiming for: for Trump to display his dementia-amplified belligerence. From the political perspective, it's mostly awash, although Trump is working hard to be on the losing side. At least one house Republican has condemned Trump's outburst.
It does illuminate the line between a normal person's reaction and Trump's unhinged meltdown.

  4. I resent Somerby’s tone referring to Thanksgiving as our day of enormous thanks, as if it were something to cynically mock. Many of us treasure our families and lives and feel gratitude despite Trump’s mess. We are able to appreciate our blessings. Somerby can fuck right off.

    1. What right does Somerby have to lecture anyone else about being enemies or not when he can’t show respect for an American tradition many of us respect?

    2. Why do you assume him to be mocking?

    4. Because of the words "Day of Enormous Thanks Eve". It is dripping in sarcasm. Maybe Somerby doesn't like Thanksgiving, but he doesn't have to piss all over it.

    5. I admit the tone is at best, puzzling. But Bob frequently displays a sentimental quality that doesn't match up with dripping sarcasm toward the relatively innocuous holiday of Thanksgiving.

    6. He seems to have a thing about the holiday. Previously he has attacked efforts to describe the traditional inclusion of native Americans in feasting as historically inaccurate. He may drag that out again tomorrow or Thursday.

Perhaps he thinks he is expressing empathy for the people who are struggling financially by emphasizing the thanks we all give for our blessings and implying we all have less under Trump. If so, it doesn't come across. One approach to the holiday is to be grateful for small things and for loved ones, the idea that you don't need a feast if you value intangibles in your lives.

"The statement has triggered the usual fury."

Every statement triggers the usual fury. Any conceivable statement triggers the usual fury. The only way to prevent the usual fury is to make no statements at all, ever, and then be scored for "remaining silent," or "averting the gaze,"

  6. With Republicans, it is never certain that they understand what is lawful. They do so many stupid unlawful things, like voting twice or living in a different state than the one where they were elected to office, or accepting a big bag of money to do their jobs in a certain way, or diddling House pages or making hush money payments from a corporate account while concealing them as attorney fees.

Trump wanted to tell the National Guard to shoot protesters in the legs and someone had to stop him, during his first term in office. Now there are fewer people telling him no.
