In search of an emergence: "I'm a scrappy kid from Youngstown," Candidate Acton has said. We Blue Americans could surely gain from the emergence of some scrappy new blood.
Senator Ossoff has emerged as a master of punishing but reasonable rhetoric. On Tuesday night, Candidate Turek went on The Last Word to offer a version of his closing campaign pitch.
Josh Turek is the Democratic nominee for the Iowa Senate seat from which Senator Ernst is retiring. It would be a Democratic Party pick-up, but Iowa has seemed to be quite Red of late.
At present, the Iowa race seems to be roughly even. Here's a bit of the leading authority's overview:
Josh Turek
Joshua Peter Turek (born April 12, 1979) is an American politician and wheelchair basketball player serving as a member of the Iowa House of Representatives from the 20th district. He is the Democratic nominee in the 2026 United States Senate election in Iowa.
Born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Turek played wheelchair basketball for Southwest Minnesota State University and professionally in Europe and competed with the United States men's national wheelchair basketball team, winning gold medals at the 2016 and 2020 Summer Paralympics.
Turek was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives in 2022 and reelected in 2024. He has been described as a moderate and a prairie populist.
[...]
Born with spina bifida, Turek underwent multiple surgeries as a child to improve mobility and has used a wheelchair since childhood. He has linked his spinal condition to his father's exposure to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War.
We Blues could possibly learn a few things from a good solid "prairie populist." Here's part of what the candidate said when he appeared with O'Donnell:
CANDIDATE TUREK (10/27/26): My political North Star is actually a quote from Franklin Delano Roosevelt where he said, "The test of our progress as a society is not whether we add more to those with abundance, but whether we have enough for those with least."
And I can tell you, I grew up with a lot of economic struggle. In my family, come from a working-class family, working-class community. We went to the Goodwill for clothes, we shared clothes, had the wrong color lunch tickets. I know what it's like to worry about missing a meal.
Also born with my disability, 21 surgeries by the age of 12. I say that most people in that circumstance, it breaks them. but the ones that come through that have a mental strength that can't be broken.
[...]
I think we have a lot of people that go to D.C. from wealth and privilege We don't have a whole lot of people that came from a place like Council Bluffs, Iowa with lived economic and health care experience—struggle.
When you've experienced that struggle yourself, you'll have a different level of empathy, a different level of compassion, a different level of understanding, and a different level of fight. That's what we're missing right now in D.C., fighters for the working class, for the everyday Iowans, not just billionaires and large corporations.
Turek seems to be finishing his campaign with fairly conventional Democratic Party rhetoric, tied to a stress on personal background and personal character.
People, we're just saying! We're hoping that Turek wins this seat, helping Dems take the Senate.
'We're hoping that Turek wins this seat, helping Dems take the Senate.'
ReplyDeleteOh that vile Somerby. Pretending yet again to be a Dem. Does he think we're fools?
Turek's appeal is not conventional Democratic populism because most Democrats (and most people in general) did not have Turek's childhood surgeries and do not now inhabit wheelchairs. For Somerby to yawn and say ho-hum, just more Democratic rhetoric is an affront to this man's struggle, which is atypical.
DeleteI would prefer to hear qualifications in a candidate speech. Winning wheelchair sports does not qualify someone to legislate or govern a nation. For Somerby, it seems to be all about the rhetoric this year. But those are just words. What about deeds? What did Turek do in the State Legislature that he is proud of? Somerby might have filled in those blanks and given an actual endorsement of Turek, not a mild "hope he wins, shrug shrug."
Turek was rated 2nd and 4th (where #1 is best) on the annual lists of the top 10 most effective Democrats in the Iowa state legislature, based on legislative effectiveness scores calculated by the Iowa Center for Effective Lawmaking.
DeleteAn effective lawmaker. Was he effective or were his laws effective?
DeleteThe stats were about his ability to get laws passed. They were not evaluating the laws themselves.
DeleteStudents used to take civics in high school, so they would know what legislators do for a job.
DeleteMy high-school civics course didn’t explain the role of money in politics.
DeleteMine did, but the laws changes when the Supreme Court ruled that corporations could buy as many politicians as they could afford.
DeleteIn this election cycle alone, musk has spent more than George Soros spent in his entire lifetime on campaigns.
DeleteMusk is spending $4 bucks for every $1 Soros buck this mid-term. A staggering half a trillion in total. The main difference between the two is Musk is a Nazi helping Russia develop their own Star Link to kill Ukrainian and American soldiers, and Soros is not as wealthy.
DeleteAnonymouse 3:02pm, who’s haphazardly dismissing Turek’s background of hardship? Bob or YOU?
Delete“Cecelia”, I recall your president mocking a disabled man on the campaign trail. Nevertheless, you cast your vote for Trump enthusiastically. Let’s see if Trump campaigns in Iowa by saying “ I prefer a candidate who can walk.” At any rate, it’s rich that you would chastise anyone here. Take a look in the mirror.
DeleteAnonymouse 5:48pm, from your lips to God’s ear… THAT would be fantabulous!
DeleteSomerby: 'We're hoping that Turek wins this seat, helping Dems take the Senate.'
DeleteAnit-Somerby Jihadist: "Somerby might have filled in those blanks and given an actual endorsement of Turek, not a mild "hope he wins, shrug shrug."
Yes, dear, yes. Your complaints are so well-founded.
Actually, they are. And it is spelled A-u-n-t-i-e, honey.
DeleteWhy would it be Auntie?
DeleteSeems like we had an Auntie Honey in our family.
Delete@8:55 Well, it isn’t anit
DeleteI know. That's a typo. But why would it be A-u-n-t-i-e?
DeleteCecelia admires Bob, disdains bigoted Republicans, and will soon align with the Democrats.
ReplyDeletePresident Trump has cancelled his Saturday appearance in Kansas. I hope he’s well.
ReplyDeleteToo busy playing golf. Why was he playing on Wed night, instead of doing the people's work?
DeleteTrump's constipation problem might just save democracy.
DeleteSurface-to-air missile added at Trump's Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach
ReplyDeleteThey don't call him Donald J Chickenshit for nothing.
Turek is presenting himself as a populist because his opponent is a millionaire.
ReplyDeleteTrump is such a huge bald-faced liar and so is Ramaswamy! Digby presents documentation of the sex crime accusations against Amy Acton's step-father (Cledith Arthur), including his other daughter's rape claims and a copy of the indictment against him. Digby also supplies support for Acton's claim about living in a tent on the street. With all of this evidence supporting Acton's statement, how can Trump continue to make public speeches on behalf of Ramaswamy, calling Acton a liar about her past?
ReplyDeletehttps://digbysblog.net/2026/10/29/clediths-crimes/
Republicans make shit up and then repeat it endlessly, no matter what evidence arises. An honest person would reevaluate their story. Trump is dishonest and so is Ramaswamy.
Of course it's a Cledith.
DeleteRemember, honor Our Host, and when you read this blog, have pity on Trump.

ReplyDelete"He has linked his spinal condition to his father's exposure to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. "
I am not a doctor, but that doesn't seem to make any sense, already on the commonsense level. Sounds to me like a way to solicit sympathy for having the father exposed to Agent Orange (allegedly), in addition to the pity for being disabled.
...but then, who knows. Anything is possible these days...
Before exposing yourself as a Republidummy try a two second AI search:
Delete"Copilot AI
Yes. Agent Orange exposure has been officially linked to at least one specific birth defect—spina bifida—according to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, with additional studies suggesting associations with other congenital abnormalities."
The one thing specifically linked to agent orange exposure! Jesus you idiot Maga trolls are fucking annoying!
Unlike Trump, Turek isn’t asking for pity.
DeleteYes, the first thing anyone does when meeting a disabled person is to call him a liar, especially about his disability.
DeleteElke Sommer and Patrick Stewart both died in LA yesterday.
ReplyDeleteAnd that portends?
DeleteThey were both born in 1940, in different months and different countries. Then they had careers in show business and died on the same day in LA.
DeleteAnd they were old as fuck, that probably had something to do with it, right?
DeleteJFK, C.S. Lewis and Aldous Huxley died on the same day.
DeleteHerman Mankiewicz, Sergei Prokofiev, and Joseph Stalin died on the same day.
DeleteDoes this sound like a well man?
ReplyDelete"Trump insisted Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) did not need him in Kansas. Saturday's planned rally for Marshall had been canceled earlier in the day, sparking speculation. Kansas Republican Party chair Danedri Herbert later confirmed the cancellation.
“Because I think he’s doing well,” Trump said when a reporter asked earlier in the gaggle why he wasn’t going. “We’re gonna do a tele rally for him instead.”
Marshall trails Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton in new polling, in a state Trump carried by 16 points in 2024.
Bogage then pressed Trump twice on whether the travel was wearing on him.
“Mr. President, you’ve been doing a lot of travel. We’ve been doing a lot of travel with you. How are you feeling? How’s your health?” Bogage asked.
“Good. I think very good. I think you see that,” Trump replied. “We had a great rally.”
“So you not going to Kansas have nothing to do with you being sick of traveling?” Bogage followed up.
“You’re sick to ask that question. You are sick! Who are you with?” Trump shot back.
“I’m with Reuters, sir,” Bogage said.
“You are a sick guy! Reuters is terrible, by the way,” Trump said.
“We do wanna make sure you’re doing well,” Bogage replied.
“Look at this guy! He’s way out of shape!” Trump said. “…I don’t feel I have to go [to] Kansas! I’m going to Florida tomorrow…”
“I feel perfect! You are disgusting! Put yourself in shape! You look like hell!” Trump continued.
Trump threw up his hand at Bogage, ended the gaggle, and stormed away as reporters kept shouting questions.
The president has a history of attacking journalists who ask about his health."
Treating an exchange like this as normal is how we got Trump as president in the first place.
DeleteSomerby keeps insisting that the press doesn't do its job, but look what happens when you press Trump on anything.
Anonymouse 8:33pm, if the press had done its job, Biden would have been replaced long before it was down to the wire via a campaign debate on a stage.
DeleteIf the press had not been involved in spreading propaganda, Biden would have been reelected.
DeleteWhy is Cecelia shifting the topic to Biden when Trump is deteriorating before our eyes, in real time?
DeleteAnonymouse 8:50pm, I disagree with your assessment of Trump, but it’s moot because we have a fine specimen in JD Vance. Not to worry, baby, it’s all good.
Delete“Cecelia” disagrees with your assessment, 8:50, which also happens to be the assessment of one Bob Somerby. Oh well, even his so-called fans don’t believe a word he says.
DeleteAnonymouse 9:11pm, that argument would suggest that I couldn’t admire anyone who I didn’t entirely agree with. That’s Soros-logic. That’s what he pays you for.
DeleteReferencing Soros. How fucking quaint. Yeah, we’re all on the payroll.
DeleteSorry, I meant to say: Referencing Master Soros, blessed be His name.
DeleteNothing says 75+ yo Fox viewer with the same panache as the mention of George Soros. Enjoy your few remaining sunset years. If Soros is paying us and you are eating Murdoch’s shit for free, bon appetit. And if you’re still hungry, maybe head over to Cheesecake Factory and do some dumpster diving for Scott Bessant’s version of a hamburger. It’s in there somewhere.
DeleteSorry, I meant to say: mention of Master Soros, blessed be His name.
Delete
DeleteIndeed, when the name of their Lord and Master is mentioned, retarded Dumbocrats tend to protest a lot. And they keep protesting, conspicuously. They keep protesting...
Anonymouse 7:38am, whether anonymices are protesting on the streets, or against a blogger, or cussing commenters out for their views and for referencing Soros, we are here helping them earn their keep via the Soros fuss-fund. They should kickback to us.
DeleteThe right wing’s Pavlovian tendency to shit themselves whenever they hear the name Soros is always entertaining. Meanwhile they grovel at the alter of their ketamine addled deadbeat sperm factory and the pedophile he bankrolls. Losing his shit in an interview over the lives lost in the Ukraine war to the Russian humanitarian (surely a competitor for the Peace prize with Trump) was a study in dramatic performance bar none. Soros has spent billions funding global democracy and the fascist worshiping right wing hates that. Thus they shit themselves at the mention of his name.
DeleteSoros dumps less than 1/5th of what Elon dumps Trannysorostroll. Go away.
DeleteShut up 10:43. Take your weird obsession somewhere else.
DeleteThe thing that cracks me up is I've got thousands of Soros bucks just for shit posting here; and you righties don't get a fucking penny from Elon. Sucks to be a righty.
DeleteCecelia, I hereby grant you 100% of what I receive from Soros:
Delete$0.00
So Soros is Lord and Master to Dems (based solely on amount of contributions), yet Musk gives many times more to GOP, but is somehow not their Lord and Master.
DeletePerplexing. Could Soros-bot and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent provide an answer? Or is he too much a part of Soros' nefarious network to spill the beans? In which case the Trump admin is actually a tool of....
Only a mind that is truly trumptarded could make sense of all this.
Delete"Soros dumps less than 1/5th of what Elon dumps"
Not true, retard. George Soros dumped $18 billion onto something called "Open Society Foundations" in just one year, 2017. Elon Musk hasn't done anything close to that.
Trump gave Elon the keys to all of our and all our Governments data. Anyone think that will end well? But look over there, it's Soros!
DeleteTime to panic!
DeleteOpen Society funds global projects, not US elections. But speaking of a person who can't figure out what the fucking problem is: "The 25 billionaires and millionaires who have already spent roughly $850 million ahead of the midterms"
DeleteAs you can see, NOTHING makes anonymices more venomous than mentioning Daddy Sorosbucks.
DeleteI'm just responding to the nothing to offer here but hate that the weirdo Cecelia offers 10:46. Haters don't belong on Progressive blogs.
DeleteWe save our venom for the Assman Cecelicuck.
DeleteAs a reminder, trumptard can fling poo on the wall but knows nothing about the real world.
DeleteThe issue isn't total charitable donations, it's how much is given to directly benefit a particular political party. AI Overview puts Soros' contributions to Dems in 2022 + 2024 and 2026 at $302 million.
But Musk in 2026 alone has given GOP $445 million. Not comparable, and once again trumptard has to suck it.
Anonymouse 11:09am, if anyone is sucking on a teat, it’s anonymices. This is an organized attack on TDH. A defense of Bob is not out of place from ANYONE.
Delete?? Soros-Musk debate, connection to TDH?
Delete
Delete"Open Society funds global projects, not US elections."
Open Society does whatever Master and Lord Soros tells them to do.
And yes, ruining some weak states to make a killing on sudden devaluation of their currencies is one of their activities. Hiring and maintaining you retarded DNC bots is another one.
Oh, how cute! The president of the Karen Club and the leftist accelerationist were feuding yesterday and today here they are back tag-teaming against Dark Lord Soros. Just adorable.
DeleteAnd once again, trumptard has to suck it.
DeleteWhen they got nothing they go after the "Globalists" if you know what I mean... But there are good people on both sides.
DeleteCecelia got the old man’s permission and a turkey baster but sadly was unable to give birth to the ketamine addled billionaire’s fourteen or fifteenth baby. At this point who is keeping count?
DeleteThe “globalists” will not replace us.
DeleteThis is the kind of thing that really winds Somerby up:
ReplyDeletehttps://digbysblog.net/2026/10/29/different-strokes/
See the clip of Trae Crowder talking about white reactions to racism.
Trump is off the campaign trail. Can’t imagine it has anything to do with his vocal seizure activity.
ReplyDeleteThey are looking to return some of his lost cognitive before he returns to the campaign to remind people just how bad Republicants are.
DeleteTrump has changed his mind and decided to do his previously cancelled rallies after all. This makes it seem more like the cancellation was health-related after all.
DeleteThey don't want me to say this, but I'm making tens of millions off my war of choice that is screwing you up your ass. Maybe the Assman being coo coo dementia on stage isn't a good look???
DeleteFox News tries to interview people in Trump's rally audience in Rock Hill SC (via Tiedrich):
ReplyDelete"Fox News bobblehead: “Tom, why are you here this morning?”
Tom: “Well, in the late 70s, I was a little too young to get involved and go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre. But this is as close as I’ll ever get, so that’s why I’m here.”
Bobblehead: “Wait, the Jonestown Massacre?”
Tom: “That’s right. There’s nothing like seeing a cult right up front, man.”
Bobblehead: “Maybe this is not a Trump supporter [walks away dejectedly].”
And right there, that’s your problem for Fox news — and for all the wingnut media right now. When there are too few cultists in the crowd, it’s way too easy for any mischief-maker to walk up to the dude holding the microphone, and go ‘interview me next.’
Masterful job, bro. Norway will be in touch to let you know when you can pick up your Nobel Trolling Prize."
Masterful performance.
