GENDER: Gurov spoke of "the lesser breed!"

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2026

Routinely, so does Gutfeld: We don't regard it as his "fault." But the Fox News Channel's Greg Gutfeld is almost surely the dumbest mother-frumper ever assigned to take part in a major American news program.

How dumb is this dumb mother-frumper? We don't regard it as his "fault," but he's so dumb that he went out last night and offered this braindead attempt at a joke at 10:01 p.m. Eastern—one minute into his brain-dead "cable news" program. To see him do it, click here:

GUTFELD (10/21/26): JFK Airport held a plane crash drill, complete with fake fire and screaming actors.

And to make it absolutely realistic, they even had a female pilot.

AUDIENCE: [On balance, general puzzlement]

In short, this guy is so stupid it squeaks. He's so locked into his loathing of the people he thinks of as women that he persists in presenting insulting jokes about the various things such lesser beings can't do—in this case, about the way a woman couldn't safely fly a plane.

Believe it or not, it gets dumber. The little guy is so committed to the brain-dead stereotypes of the past that he offers jokes which drive the theme that women (and people of Asian ancestry) are horrible drivers of cars! More often, though, his spectacularly stupid concept of "conservative attack comedy" moves down this uglier path:

GUTFELD (10/19/26): Greta Thunberg has found a new cause—supporting the riots in France.

Although she still hasn't succeeded in her most urgent crusade, which is to find someone who will finally [BLEEP] her.

For what it's worth, we know of no reason to say that Greta Thunberg, who's now 23, has supported the riots in France. None of that has anything to do with the ugly place the mind of Gutfeld inevitably goes when discussing the people he thinks of as women, with storebought tools like Tyrus and Timpf pathetically urging him on.

(We don't regard it as his "fault" that his mind inevitably goes there. We've long said that Greg Gutfeld, age 62, deserves and seems to need some help, and that his criminally negligent corporate employer ought to be providing it.)

In yesterday afternoon's post, we linked to Pemberton's guest essay in the New York Times. For non-subscribers, his essay is stuck behind a paywall, but it starts like this:

I Have Never Seen the Online Right So Happy

The online right has that old spring in its step. The infighting brought on by President Trump’s chaotic second-term agenda has settled down, and the anonymous accounts have been posting at a furious clip. What is the source of this newfound unity? The accusations brought by Jane Doe against seven men at Cornell have given the online right what it’s been missing most: a woman to hate on.

The social media celebrities and talking heads of the right have jumped at the chance to pick apart Jane Doe’s allegations of a gang rape—labeling it a “hoax” and a “witch hunt.” Unable to dispute the basic narrative of the assault, including a lurid fraternity group chat, they’ve elected to argue that Jane Doe is the actual aggressor, a once-willing participant in sexual debauchery now seeking vengeance against her hapless partners.

Her most hostile critics on the right have sought to portray Jane Doe as a kind of out-of-control sexual fiend or “super slut,” as the conspiracist Alex Jones has labeled her...

Sad! But Pemberton continues from there. Indeed, angry misogyny has been a feature of the angry "conservative" internet ever since the internet was born. Incel-adjacents like Gutfeld are part of this wider throwback culture—a culture which traces back to the sawn of European literature with "The Rage of Achilles" in Book I of the Iliad.

We think today of an early passage from Chekhov's famous, widely lauded story, The Lady with the Lapdog.

At its heart, Chekhov's story is about a man who is surprised by the discovery that he's capable of loving the woman he loves, a person who is "in no way remarkable."

"He thought and dreamed," Chekhov writes. It's a stunning four-word sentence, offered at the point when this discovery dawns. Early on, though, Chekhov ventures inside Gurov's previous loathing of the people he thought of as women:

The Lady with the Dog
(Constance Garnett translation)

[...]

He was under forty, but he had a daughter already twelve years old, and two sons at school. He had been married young, when he was a student in his second year, and by now his wife seemed half as old again as he. She was a tall, erect woman with dark eyebrows, staid and dignified, and, as she said of herself, intellectual. She read a great deal, used phonetic spelling, called her husband, not Dmitri, but Dimitri, and he secretly considered her unintelligent, narrow, inelegant, was afraid of her, and did not like to be at home. He had begun being unfaithful to her long ago—had been unfaithful to her often, and, probably on that account, almost always spoke ill of women, and when they were talked about in his presence, used to call them "the lower race."

It seemed to him that he had been so schooled by bitter experience that he might call them what he liked, and yet he could not get on for two days together without "the lower race." In the society of men he was bored and not himself, with them he was cold and uncommunicative; but when he was in the company of women he felt free, and knew what to say to them and how to behave; and he was at ease with them even when he was silent. In his appearance, in his character, in his whole nature, there was something attractive and elusive which allured women and disposed them in his favor; he knew that, and some force seemed to draw him, too, to them.

Experience often repeated, truly bitter experience, had taught him long ago that with decent people, especially Moscow people—always slow to move and irresolute—every intimacy, which at first so agreeably diversifies life and appears a light and charming adventure, inevitably grows into a regular problem of extreme intricacy, and in the long run the situation becomes unbearable. But at every fresh meeting with an interesting woman this experience seemed to slip out of his memory, and he was eager for life, and everything seemed simple and amusing.

That's very, very sad. He refers to them as "the lower race," can't live two days without them.

We'd rather that a different kind of care had been taken in the portrait of Gurov's wife. But Chekhov's picture of Gurov's anger at "the lesser breed" (David Magarshack translation, Penguin Classics) may take us closer to an understanding of Gutfeld's horrible conduct.

Gurov is attractive to women. His problem is that he was married, at an early age, to a woman with whom he's poorly aligned, and in the Russian society of the time divorce was not an option.

For the many boys and men in online incel culture, the problem takes a substantially different form. But for heterosexual boys and men, the ability to be happy in the world will likely be directly connected to their ability to form a union with someone from "the lesser breed."

The fury which spills from people like Gutfeld, with people like Timpf and Tyrus urging him on, will routinely come from their inability, for whatever reason or reasons, to form such pleasing connections. On his nightly "cable news" program, Gutfeld keeps instructing boys and young men in the braindead attitudes which will only extend their problem.

In Monday's report, we started the week with a simple question:

Should Shane Gillis have said what he said?

Should Gillis have gone on Saturday Night Live and said that women are dressing like whores when they go the gym?  In our view, the answer is fairly obvious. More on that tomorrow.

Gurov emerges as a person in Chekhov's famous story. Can a modern America really expect to find its way in the face of the apparent misogyny which spills from unreconstructed people like Gutfeld—in the face of their endless denigration of the people who are often, simply put, much better people than they?

From the sitting president right on down, the rage of Achilles is back with a vengeance. Should full-grown American men and women accept this state of affairs?

Since both are wired, but with Dems being less weird, most people will choose Dem in the voting booth this year.

  4. Actually there is a weak reason to sort of connect Thunberg with support for the French riots. Many believe that one segment of the rioters are Muslims living in France who have not been acclimated into French culture. And, Thunberg, of course, is very publicly supporting Palestinians, in Israel =- a group that committed a horrific terrorism event.

  6. "We'd rather that a different kind of care had been taken in the portrait of Gurov's wife. "

The portrait of Gurov's wife reflects the way Gurov sees her. She is his justification for philandering, his excuse for being a poor husband. That is why she is described in such a way.

When Somerby blames the author's care for her portrayal, he shows that he does not understand how this particular misogynist sees women. The description of the wife, through Gurov's eyes, is how misogynists in general not only perceive women but blame women for their own misbehavior. For example, rapists blame the women they rape for deserving what happens to them, by being uppity or slutty (evoking the rapists desires) or not knowing their place and staying in it (being out at night or holding a job she doesn't deserve or having too much money she didn't earn). Rape is a hate crime. If you don't include the hate, then it is possible to mistake it as a matter of sex, which is how misogynist men think about rape.

Somerby's attribution of Gurov's hate for his wife, to Chekhov's unkind portrayal of the wife, misunderstands that we are being shown the lack of love and respect of the unfaithful Gurov, not Chekhov's beliefs about women. Chekhov's greatness is in his portrayal of Gurov's psychology, not his ability to use the right adjectives to describe an ugly wife. We do not get to see what she was really like, just Gurov's disrespectful attitude.

Note that all of Gurov's flings eventually disintegrate, so the problem is not being married too young or to the wrong woman in his youth, but his own inabilities to love and see a woman for herself.

Goodie! Goodie! Somerby is going to tell us all tomorrow how he thinks women should dress at the gym -- the obvious answer, he says. Meanwhile, women are blithely going to the gym wearing whatever they themselves think it appropriate, without any concern for what Gillis or Somerby think at all.

This isn't a situation where Somerby and Gillis get to argue and perhaps disagree about what women should wear at the gym, but a situation where women don't give a damn what either man thinks about their clothes. Why does Somerby pretend he gets a vote?

Dress codes for women disappeared in the late 1960s. Renewed attempts to reimpose them are not going to work because women are used to picking their own clothes now and are not going back to the bad old days.

Courts have ruled that companies may impose specific dress requirements on their employees but may not impose a greater burden on women than on men. Those requirements must be spelled out in detail. Outdated sexual stereotypes are prohibited. Aspects of dress and hairstyle specific to cultural subgroups cannot be proscribed (headscarves, braids or natural hair). Sexually provocative dress unrelated to the business purpose is prohibited.

    6. Women don't complain about men's attire, nor do they tell men what they should wear. The biggest complaint women have about men at the gym is the weird groans and grunts that men make to signal to each other that they are lifting a lot of weight. Also, men are more likely than women to not wipe the sweat off the equipment after using it.

Women don't go to the gym naked because of the unwanted male attention. Men who ogle women are being rude, in the same way that men learn not to look at each other's genitals at the urinal (or make eye contact at all). Men have rules about looking at each other. Similarly, women do not want to be ogled because it arouses fear about being stalked or approached in an aggressive manner by an asshole.

Men who resent such rules about ogling are typically the kind of misogynists who think it is fun to cause women distress just because they can, as a demonstration of power (not sexiness) similar to bullying. No woman in her right mind would respond to such a guy because these men are the most likely to be abusive in subsequent relationships. It is asking for trouble.

    7. If a man is not decently covered, women will complain.

Grunting and groaning are natural during exertion. Women with normal intelligence don’t complain about it.

  8. "From the sitting president right on down, the rage of Achilles is back with a vengeance."

Somerby's bizarre attempt to link what happens today to The Iliad (an ancient WORK OF FICTION) makes no sense when it comes to explaining misogyny. In a culture where women were property, their treatment was not dictated by hate, as it is today.

From the top on down, Somerby say, rage of Achilles is back. No, the president is a pedophile and rapist who has always treated women as objects, without any regard for their own feelings, personhood, or the law. Trump has bought and sold women in a culture where such acts are AGAINST THE LAW, not part of some Achillean bro code, as exists among neo-Nazi extremist groups, incels and the manosphere. Somerby appears to be excusing male illegal behavior as part of Western tradition, but the illegal mistreatment of women is not only morally wrong, despicable, but also illegal in this country. That is why Epstein was ultimately jailed and why he was killed (or committed suicide) rather than face punishment under the law. It is also why there is an ongoing conspiracy to keep revelations of other men's illegal acts from being disclosed by releasing the Epstein files, in which Trump is one of the most frequently named names, accused of raping several 13 year old girls, among other illegal acts.

Somerby's ongoing attempts to portray crimes against women as part of human nature, approved by Homer, or justified by Achilles "rage" when it was the acts of the Gods that started the Trojan War, show Somerby to be sympathetic to men who hurt women, especially underage girls, which makes Somerby no better than Trump or his accomplices.

Somerby has no standing to rail against Gutfeld when he himself is a great deal worse, when it comes to both understanding why women object to being raped, and why our culture does not permit adult men to prey upon young teens (much less younger children).

Our sitting president is a pedophile, rapist, and now a demented fool who is damaging our country every day that he remains in office. It is time for Somerby to acknowledge that instead of pretending that Gutfeld is the only misogynist in the room.

  9. Incels typically have trouble relating to women, but relate fine to men. That is the opposite of Gurov's problem, which was that he couldn't relate to men but did fine among women.

In the time period depicted, marriages in high class society were arranged by parents, between two families who exchanged property. They were a matter of ensuring hereditary lineages by providing heirs and handing down property. It was like that in Victorian and Regency England too, and is still like that in India, which has a very strict caste system.

Men did not love their wives, except as a duty to produce heirs, and the same was true for the wives, who did not love their husbands but were subject to them under the law. The dalliances that Gurov engaged in were among wives who were visiting without their husbands and engaged in flirtations as a form of entertainment, as Gurov himself did too.

The irony in the story is that Gurov fell in love, which was unusual for him, but a comeuppance because he then experienced the unhappiness of wanting what he could not have, just as the women he wooed and then dumped did in his previous relationships. Somerby doesn't seem to understand this part of the story. He thinks it is progress that Gurov learned to love, not a punishment. Members of upper class society did not go around falling in love with each other beyond wedlock simply because their marriages were arranged. They knew they weren't supposed to be doing that, any more than men today are supposed to be unfaithful to wives they do supposedly love, because of their marriage vows.

Somerby really needs to read something about the history of the concept of love in various societies, times and places. Chekhov was challenging the idea of arranged marriage in his story. He wasn't talking about incels.
