Inside Salon: Shoeshine lives! Long live Mitt's shoeshine!

FRIDAY, JANUARY 13, 2012

The dishonesty comes from both sides now: What words should a progressive use to describe this kind of conduct?

Last night, Steve Kornacki told Rachel Maddow about an exciting new photo. The photo had been posted many places, including at Salon. The photo showed Mitt Romney getting a shoeshine! Sitting right there on a tarmac!

What kind of man would do that?

In fact, the photo in question shows Romney getting wanded by airport security. This fact was reported yesterday afternoon by NPR, with a hat tip to a tweet by Alex Seitz-Wald of Think Progress. Maddow corrected Kornacki’s statement before last night’s program was over.

The photo doesn’t show Romney getting a shoeshine. But so what? It’s still up at Salon as we type, illustrating this piece by Joan Walsh. (Walsh does not refer to the shoeshine). Salon gives “credit” to the Ed Show. That site still has the photo up too, along with a bogus description.

As we type, it has been roughly eighteen hours since NPR ran its correction.

Is this sort of thing still worse on the right? We have no truck scale to measure such loads. But our side increasingly apes Sean and Rush. We think this is bad for progressive interests. We think it’s bad for the country.

We hate to be the ones to tattle. But very bad, very fatuous conduct is found on both sides now.

  1. i believe this is "white meat" for democrats/progressives, and just as bad as that "other red meat" traditionally thrown to the ravening conservative masses.

maddow, et al, should stop this, now, right this very instant!

  2. Just curious. Well, actually, baffled. Say Romney was getting a shoe shine. What's so terrible about that?

  3. "... very fatuous conduct is found on both sides now."

Since when do "we" have ANY side in American mass-media? Is Bob really embracing the absurdity that "our" views are represented in the media today, thanks to MSNBC? When did we deputize MSNBC to represent "our" interests?

It might be more accurate to say that fatuous conduct is found throughout the merchandising of corporate public affairs programming....

  4. So I went to the Ed Show site yesterday and subscribed, which allowed me to make comments.

I then commented on the photo Bob linked to, saying, "Sorry to be a spoilsport, but Mitt's actually getting his shoes wanded, not polished."

Ed's comment editor must have found my comment too inflammatory as it was never allowed. The only two comments up were posted earlier and later than my attempt. I suppose I didn't expect any better, but it's still shocking to this naif that partisan hackery trumps truth.
