World’s most horrible cable discussion!

TUESDAY, MAY 22, 2012

Darling Rachel jumps the shark in service to Darling Cory: To understand last evening’s awful discussion, you have to know a fact that didn’t get mentioned:

Rachel Maddow and Cory Booker have been friends ever since they went to Stanford together. When Booker appears on her show in better times, Maddow often mentions this fact.

It helps us learn to adore her.

Last night, she didn’t do so. But she staged a truly gruesome cable segment in defense of her horrible, scam-heavy friend.

We’re not sure which was worse: Booker’s disingenuous filibusters, or the fact that Maddow kept letting him stage them. Or was it the ludicrous way Maddow opened the segment, pretending that the GOP has been fooling us about what Booker actually said?

Maddow was totally full of shit, as she so frequently is. But her horrible friend may have been even worse. Truly, these two are a pair.

Go ahead—watch last evening’s performance. (Strongly recommended; just click here.) If you can’t see Maddow's scamminess this time around, trust us—you never will.

The American people saw this one coming: To see Mike Seeger sing Darling Cory, go ahead—just click this.

Why did Booker run his scam: We'll let Kornacki explain.

  1. That set the stage for Booker’s 2002 race for mayor, an ugly contest against incumbent Sharpe James, an entrenched icon of the city’s civil rights generation of black politicians. James, as any self-respecting Newark mayor would do, leveraged his clout for campaign contributions from city workers, vendors and those who aspired to be city workers and vendors.

Salon is far too kind to Sharpe James. My wife taught at New Jersey Medical School in Newark for 20+ years. Sharpe James was a crook. Under his corrupt machine, residents of Newark suffered in many ways. Booker's 2002 victory over this corrupt politician wasn't ugly. It was beautiful for anyone who cares about the well-being of black people.

    1. The word "ugly" was applied to the contest, not the victory. It does not say the ugliness came from Booker but refers to the leveraging of patronage by James. The article clearly says that James went to jail, so who is saying he wasn't a crook?

David, check back with your wife about the 2002 Newark mayoral results. "Kornacki explains:"

      >>>The press – and James’ campaign – took note that almost all of [Booker's campaign donations were] from outside Newark, nearly half of it was from outside New Jersey, and a quarter of it came directly from Wall Street.

This helped bolster James’ claim that Booker, who grew up in an affluent suburb, was not an authentic Newarker. That attack resonated just enough to save James, who won in a squeaker.

  3. Someday online dictionaries will offer videos to define certain words.

The video of Maddow's "interview" with Booker will then be found beneath the word "obfuscation".

This page, however, has the video on it using the embedded player: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2012/05/22/rachel-maddow-does-12-minute-interview-cory-booker-without-asking-his

  5. Yes, Yes, Yes, we get it. You don't like her, you've never liked her and you never will like her. She is beneath contempt. Reading you in column after column slap the snot out of Ms Maddow is about as enjoyable as watching Olbermann slap the snot out of Hillary Clinton during the 2008 Democratic Primary campaign night after night. It's like you're thinking "The rubes just haven't noticed yet. Let's slap the liberal darling again." I have to tell you this is exactly why I stopped reading you daily. It's become tedious.

    2. Here's my guess: you know what would make Somerby stop slapping the snot out of Maddow?

Maddow's becoming a journalist instead of a shameless partisan hack.

You remind me of those right wing shills who dismissed all criticism of Bush as Bush Derangement Syndrome: why do you people spend ALL of your time criticizing the man? what's wrong with you?

If a public figure or pundit is behaving badly, then they deserve to be criticized, and to continue to be criticized, so long as the criticisms themselves are fair.

    3. Bob Somersby doesn't offend my sensibilities, nor am I a shill for the right, left or center. Nor did I, if you drooling fan boys, cared to notice, defend Rachel Maddow. I observed, correctly, I think that Bob has gotten boring, stale and predictable. And I throw highly_adequate's words right back at him or her:
If a public figure or pundit is behaving badly, then they deserve to be criticized, and to continue to be criticized, so long as the criticisms themselves are fair.

Pot call the kettle black much??

    4. Yep, exactly the impression Somerby wants to plant inside someone's head too lazy to actually watch Maddow.

"partisan hack, not a real journalist."

And your comparison of people who thinks that Somerby ran out of original things to say about 11 years ago to "right wingers" is quite ironic.

"so long as the criticisms themselves are fair". WHICH IS THE POINT, GENIUS!

Somerby's criticisms aren't "fair." They are repetitive, tedious, predictable and quite boring. Kinda like listening to Rush Limbaugh "criticize" Obama.

    5. Yes Damn it! Why won't Maddow write a bestseller of quality about an important issue that no one else is paying attention to?? Then The Daily Howler could......oops.

    6. Look, the complaint -- which I've heard a million times in many, many contexts -- that a given line of criticism is "unoriginal" or "repetitive" is one of the dumbest, most irrelevant complaints possible.

Suppose someone is doing something wrong, and what they are doing wrong is, objectively, damaging, and they keep doing it in the face of your criticism. How does it become a problem of the criticizer if he or she keeps criticizing, rather than of the person who insists on continuing to do the same kind of wrong thing? Does that make ANY sense at all?

Only, I think, if you really want the person who is doing something wrong to keep it up, uncriticized. Clearly, that's what you have in mind here: that's your goal.

So was it with the Bush fanboys who called out Bush Derangement Syndrome on all those who kept criticizing Bush.

And so it is with you.

    7. I could simply cut and paste your response to me. Your whole argument seems to be that 1.) The Daily Howler is always correct, 2. ) The Daily Howler brooks no criticism, 3.) If any does dare to criticize the great Daily Howler protector, highly_adequate, will jump in as good Fanboys do, employing circular logic to slavishly defend said Daily Howler. Look, Bob holds up a mirror to the media criticizing where he feels said media has fallen down and how they might fix themselves. Surely a media critic such as Bob Somerby can take criticism. I'm fairly certain that my little critique and it is a little critique re: his fetish over Ms. Maddow hasn't harmed him a bit. But he should now that his anti Maddow fetish can and does turn readers off. And he certainly doesn't need you to fight off criticism.. It comes with the turf, so lighten up Fan Boy

  8. You really need to go back beyond 2008 to put The Daily Howler's shoddy work here in proper perspective. I can well remember, after a few mild rejoinders from our tribe made it into the MSM, a couple of Fox News knuckleheads smirking at "The Daily Howler" over the fact that Gore knew Somerby in College. That was enough for these two bozos, no case had to be made. In today's Howler, Somerby plays the same game which we must watch, yes, more in sorrow than in anger.

Maddow's opening remarks, though drenched in hyperbole, are actually perfectly accurate, and that's why The Daily Howler won't go near them. The Republicans are making absurd hay out of a tit for tat prattle coughed out by a minor Democratic Poll on a Sunday chat show. They are attempting to play this up as Obama ( himself a "free market guy" who has talked both sides of this issue himself) bringing down the iron fist on poor truth teller. Progressive journalists like Kornaki bring up a whole different , but possibly relevant issue, portraying Booker as the evil corporate Dem, as they always did with Clinton and Gore (with some justification).
The only interesting thing about this is how willing CNN was yesterday to carry the Republicans water for them, though this is not exactly shocking from the people who gave the world Glen Beck.

To a certain extent Booker is a politician having it both ways. Fill in your own business as usual joke here.

Friends and neighbors, it may be time to finally confess it: one of the last resources of even tempered, fair playing, truth telling self defense against the Media Madness has all but sunk into the west. I've seen this, I think, before.
We had a guy out here (David is not the only one in CA) named Marc Cooper. You might know him from the Nation. He was a good feature writer, and had a radio spot on the Pacifica station too. A revolt at the Radio Station from nutball progressives treated Cooper with a ruthless nastiness, and no one came to his defense. Along with a sad man crush on the odious Christopher Hitchens, this really pushed Cooper over the edge, and he became the Press's progressive hating progressive of choice. He covered the 2008 election for the Huffington Post AND the LA Weekly, and wrote barely a coherent world, it was all biased hatred of anyone who utter a positive word about Hillary Clinton. It was remarkably unhinged stuff, and nobody cared, by that point Cooper was a joke. The now apolitical (at best) Weekly dumped him after he had served his purpose.
There is a never a tough or complex call in The Daily Howler anymore, you either see it his way or your a lizard brain (in which event, he excuses himself from making a case). Really childish stuff. I'm afraid if that important book ever does get out, the one to set the record straight on 2000, nobody will care. We will have had had it with The Daily Howler.
