Chris Matthews, permitted to walk: Chris Matthews is making the rounds promoting a new book.
Yesterday, he turned up on The View. What we saw there was a case of complete lack of preparation.
Matthews' jihad against Hillary Clinton dates at least to the first week of December 1999. It extended, in full-blown form, right through the 2008 campaign.
Yesterday, more than twenty years later, Joy Behar decided to challenge Matthews about it. Over at The Daily Beast, Justin Baragona provides the videotape.
Here's the pitiful way it went down:
Matthews had just been asked, by Sunny Hostin, about his awkward departure from MSNBC in early March of last year.
Now Behar had a question for Chris. Her question went like this:
BEHAR (6/1/21): I want to talk about another part of what happened to you. You made a lot of sexist comments about Hillary Clinton. And you called her ‘she-devil,’ ‘witchy,’ ‘Nurse Ratched,’ among other things. I mean look—
At this point, Matthews interrupted.
"No, I didn't," he absurdly said. "Actually, I didn't. Look it up—just look it up."
Matthews' absurd denial left Behar completely flummoxed. “You never did that? So my research is wrong?” the unprepared TV star asked.
Moments later, Behar completely collapsed, saying this:
“It was reported that you said those things. So that’s my bad—I think.”
"Well, probably online somewhere," Matthews now absurdly said. He was suggesting that Behar must have seen those inaccurate claims on some crazy web site.
Flummoxed, Behar collapsed. Simply put, what we saw there was a typical case of total non-preparation.
Matthews has been off the air for well over a year. The two of us once lunched at The Palm. On another occasion, he weirdly told us how "pink-sheeting" works at that famous hotel right across the street from the Improv.
He's been off the air for over a year. His years of rather peculiar behavior don't matter any more at this point. That said, no one worked harder, or more crazily, to defeat Candidate Gore.
At this site, we wrote about Matthews' sliming of Hillary Clinton for years, starting with his crazy interview with Gail Sheehy, a Clinton biographer, in December 1999.
On that occasion, Matthews' trashing of Hillary Clinton centered around comparisons to the power-mad Eva Peron. His ranting went on and on and on. Then he ranted some more.
Sheehy was suitably taken aback by the force of Matthews' loathing. At the time, Matthews was supporting Rudy Giuliani in the New York Senate race, where he was opposed by Clinton.
Matthews' attacks on Hillary Clinton were full-blown crazy that night. That said, the attacks continued for years, and they often involved the kinds of gender-skewed comparisons Behar correctly cited.
Matthews finally encountered a bit of pushback for this conduct in early 2008. But the record of his endless name-calling is in fact perfectly clear.
Behar didn't know this; simply put, she was unprepared. Matthews made an absurd denial, and Behar let him walk.
This is the way the stars of Our Town have always played the game. Here in Our Town, we aren't very sharp and we aren't very good. Many Others can see this about us.
Many of The Others are currently out of their minds. That said, the behavior of Our Town's elite has been persistently fraudulent for a great many years.
On the brighter side, they get paid millions of dollars for conning the world in such ways. They get to own homes on Nantucket.
We've sleepwalked through these imitations of life for three or four decades now. According to disconsolate experts, the end is drawing near.
Over at The Daily Beast, Justin Baragona provides videotape of Behar's failed attempt at an interview, plus a bit of background information. Our archives are full of reports on this topic, but we aren't going to waste our time preparing links to such material.
Behar was overpaid and unprepared. Those have been the ways of Our Town's fully hapless elites for a very long time now. More of this haplessness can be seen in the Post and the Times every morning.
Our brains aren't wired for tasks like these, major top experts all say.
Calm down, dear Bob, that's all in the past.
ReplyDeleteThe world has changed, and now no one is allowed to say mean things about your cult's High Priests.
Rejoice, dear Bob.
You should stop, posting here, you have never, and are not capable of saying anything intelligent.
DeleteKeep up the good work Mao. Don't let 3:53's stupid comment bother you.
DeletePlease don't leave, Mao.
DeleteWe want to see you call Trump "a left-wing elitist dembot" when some bigger piece of shit runs for the 2024 GOP Presidential nomination.
Leaving here would be a band aid on Mao’s problem. Morbidly obese as he is, he could use his scooter on a much needed long walk. Short piers abound. Problem solved.
DeleteWhoa, is this temper-tantrum a reaction to our praising of Khan-Cullors' entrepreneurial skills recently?
DeleteTsk. Do you, dear bots, hate dear Khan-Cullors because she's "black"? Tsk-tsk-tsk.
Mao,
DeleteYou were funnier when you pretended you didn't LOVE the Establishment.
Mao,
DeleteRe: temper tantrums.
Were you in DC with the other snowflakes crying about black votes counting on January 6th?

"This is the way the stars of Our Town have always played the game. Here in Our Town, we aren't very sharp and we aren't very good, and many Others can see this about us."
ReplyDeleteBehar wasn't prepared to have Matthews, a person of some stature, flatly deny things he obviously said, but that is now the fault of "Our Town" and not the lying liar? And when was Behar elected as the representative of Our Town? I don't believe the collective liberal reputation rests on whatever Behar says or does.
Such binary thinking. They can't both be at fault?
DeleteMatthews is at fault for lying. Behar is at fault for letting him get away with it.
Behar didn't exactly let him get away with it. For one thing, there is a Daily Beast article now talking about how Matthews lied to her face. A normal person (e.g., non-liar) would find that embarrassing. More likely, Matthews considers himself clever, as most Republicans do when they engage in unethical behavior.
DeleteIs Behar supposed to review 20 years worth of Matthews tapes (assuming they are available) in order to anticipate that he will lie to her that way? Is she really "at fault" for treating a colleague as an honorable person? If she had called him a liar without any proof at hand, she would have been more mistaken, in my opinion. She backtracked because she didn't have footage (and why should she have?). She wasn't worried about how that would make her look because she was more focused on the interview itself than on her own image, which Somerby now attacks for something that was Matthews' fault.
So, yes, they could both be at fault, but in this situation, I do not believe they were. Matthews lied and Behar behaved professionally. Your mileage may vary, but I don't believe you had sufficient evidence to conclude that this was binary thinking. But hey, why should that stop you from calling people names?
...but that is now the fault of "Our Town" and not the lying liar...
DeleteBinary thinking.
Also, binary thinking isn't a name. Carry on.
1. Somerby never blames Matthews for lying.
Delete2. Somerby repeatedly blames Our Town for all crimes.
If there is binary thinking going on, it is Somerby's, not mine.
Calling someone a binary thinker is like calling them dumb. It is just name-calling. If you didn't intend an ad-hominem, you might have asked "why can't both statements be true?" instead of saying "such binary thinking". One addresses the argument, the other addresses the person.
Well, if the shoe fits, Anonymouse 5:20pm.
DeleteRemove your head from it then. It’ll fit just fine.
DeleteRemove your head from it then. It’ll fit just fine.
Delete"On the brighter side, they get paid millions of dollars for conning the world in such ways."
ReplyDeleteAnd how much has Trump been paid for his cons? And how much did Matthews earn? And what is Somerby being paid for his lies here? But Somerby only wants to focus on Behar...why? Because she is female and successful on her show? Because she is liberal? Why isn't this a diatribe against Matthews instead of Behar (and by extension, Our Town)?
"Sheehy was suitably taken aback by the force of Matthews' loathing." How does Somerby know this? Sheehy didn't like Hillary much either.
ReplyDeleteYes, I too was taken aback by her loathing.
Delete"That said, the behavior of Our Town's elite has been persistently fraudulent for a great many years. "
ReplyDeleteWas it fraudulent that Behar didn't remember something that happened 20 years ago and wasn't prepared when a man lied to her face about it?
Matthews may have been nitpicking in the same manner as Somerby does -- insisting that if Behar didn't use the exact same literal wording, then he didn't say what she attributed to him. Even Somerby would have to go back and look that one up, but Behar didn't have the ability to do that while on the air. And Somerby calls that fraudulent of her (not Matthews).
This is one of the more unreasonable criticisms of an on-air personality (Behar is not a journalist) that Somerby has made, among many. I doubt anyone, left or right, could live up to Somerby's standards. And that is the point -- Somerby doesn't want anyone to succeed because his goal is to undermine faith in the media so that big lies, like Trump's, can be swallowed with greater ease, putting more corrupt Republicans into office.
Who is the fraud here? A hapless interviewer or a man who repeatedly claims to be liberal while advancing Republican goals under false pretenses?
Matthews tries to wiggle out of the accusation by saying:
Delete"“Well, I think what you heard was—you know what a tease is on the show?” Matthews replied. “There was a tease by a producer. It was setting up what the Republicans were going to do to her in that campaign.”
He continued: “It was a setup to a whole segment on the program how the Republicans were not going to run against her on the issues. They’ll go after her personally, in that kind of attack. That’s how that phrase was used... I never said that about her.”
Aside from the term "she devil" there is evidence he said the other things himself, not as a tease or example of what other Republicans might say about her, and several worse things that Behar didn't mention. But this is exactly how Somerby muddies the waters in his critiques and it is dishonest.
For example, earlier today Somerby says that McConnell never said something attributed to him by NY Times writers. However, their statement was a paraphrase and clearly appropriate in meaning based on what McConnell and other Republicans did say, and never intended as a direct quote (e.g., presented without quotation marks, as a summary of what a letter said). Somerby treated that paraphrase as a direct quote, searched for it and then said that McConnell never said it. That is dishonest, fraudulent, in the same way as Chris Matthews was to Joy Behar.
"They get to own homes on Nantucket."
ReplyDeleteThey have to live someplace. Somerby seemed equally upset when Don Lemon tried to buy a home in New York City.
Good article. Stay tuned for comments filled with assumptions, binary thinking, and logical fallacies. Most readers here seem incapable of simply focusing on what's presented. I guess the experts are right and we are seeing the results of a failed national discourse as its corrosive permanence sets in and gnaws away at our ability to even attempt to reverse the decay.
ReplyDeleteWhen you say experts, are you talking about wailing anthropologists living in caves? Somerby is.
DeleteLOL
DeleteIt's mostly just one person, just one loser posting under a lot of different names and anonymously with the same trolling garbage. This poster's stupidity is so vast and their logic (if you could call it that) is so idiotic that they must be writing a parody intended to counter intuitively reinforced Bob's points (and yours). And of course there's also very good chance that they really are that crazy and stupid. You can go on Twitter and see the vast stupidity of liberals, Maddow viewers for example. It's very sad but they've grown up on TV and now they're stuck in a self-reinforcing media loop that particularly in the case of liberals at this point in time, will not allow in one iota of dissent from the party line. Which is so crazy because you would think that everyone knows that that always leads to disaster. But these are younger people that grew up and know absolutely nothing about history. They're TV babies. They're smartphone babies. At this point, essentially they're robots or androids. They're purely programmed by oligarchs. But our one troll here is so fantastically and comically stupid it must be a parody.
DeleteTDH wasn't so bad not long ago, before Bob's white grievances got the best of him.
Deleteliberal = stupid to this guy
Deletemore proof that this is not a liberal blog, when guys like this agree with Somerby
does this guy even know the difference between a robot and an android -- appears not
I know it is more than one person writing comments here because I write a few of them and I know that I don't write the rest. Beyond, that it could be several people or even quite a few.
DeleteAgreed. So many commenters here seem incapable of simply focusing on what's presented, making comments filled with assumptions, binary thinking, and logical fallacies. Like 6 year olds they reason. It's very sad because they represent liberals. They give liberalism a very bad name. They are ruining it with their childishness and binary thinking.
Delete7:34 shows it perfectly. Dissent in any way and you are not liberal. Sickening. 7:34 was brought up watching screens and has zero knowledge of history. They are a child. Damn it's sad.
DeleteThere is no one here posting at 7:34. Do you mean 7:36?
DeleteSomerby is David in Cal.
Delete“They get to own homes on Nantucket.”
ReplyDeleteI’m not sure that’s any kind of privilege. Not one I’d care about, anyway.
I don't understand why a program such as that doesn't have a fact checker on site who could quickly look it up and show it to the host?
ReplyDeleteWell hell, Bob. I'm cool with your stuff, couple of decades now. Hope you're doing okay.
ReplyDeleteLeroy
Matthew's is also a habitual liar. But because he did it to Hillary, the rest of the media didn't care.

An interesting discussion is worth comment. I think that you should write more on this topic, it might not be a taboo subject but generally people are not enough to speak on such topics. To the next. Cheers
