In the meantime, we recommend this: We'll be losing a chunk of time this morning. For that reason, we won't be posting until this afternoon.
In the meantime, why not ponder Kevin Drum's new post, "What is woke?"
In our view, Drum makes some good, solid points. The comments are also intriguing.
Final point concerning definitions: People of all political stripes would have a hard time defining common terms pretty much all the time.
ReplyDeleteAccording to dembot Kevin "woke" means
"...aware of & committed to addressing systemic injustice in the US."
But then you libs define "systemic injustice" as "too low concentration of melanin in an average billionaire". As if most billionaires having dark skin (and most of the underclass pale skin) would eliminate this "systemic injustice".
...whereas in reality systemic injustice has absolutely nothing to do with skin color. Systemic injustice is in exploitation of the working class.
...and the only feasible explanation for this sleight of hand is that the upper class benefits from it; benefits from working class' infighting. Oh, well...
Oh well. Trump gave the upper class a HUGE tax break, and the economically anxious Republican voters, who aren't at all just a bunch of bigots (hat tip/ corporate-owned mainstream media) couldn't wait to vote for Trump again.
DeleteSay what you will about Republican voters, but they sure do love the upper class.
Mao — a nitpick. That definition was not Kevin’s. It was someone Kevin quoted,
DeleteD in C
Well, yes, but isn't it exactly the same bunch of words they all parrot endlessly?
DeleteJesus the stupid Meow Mao. It's your heroes definition. "DeSantis’ general counsel, Ryan Newman, responded that the term means “the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them.” https://www.fox13news.com/news/what-does-woke-mean-gov-desantis-officials-answer-during-andrew-warren-trial
Delete1. "Woke" involves cowardice and bullying. "Wok" people toe the line, whatever it is, for fear that they'll be bullied and attacked. "Woke" people jump in with the mob to bully anyone or anything that's considered today's target. That can turn on a dime. E.g., Musk was a big hero, for always voting Democrat and promoting electric cars. In one moment, he became a big enemy.
ReplyDelete2. Woke means ignoring reality. E.g., woke people ay themselves on the back for their treatment of minorities. Yet, minorities live better lives in conservative areas. Woke endorses radical changes in police procedure and bail, even though those changes are a disaster wherever they've been used.
3. Woke often is directly opposed to traditional liberalism. E.g., Traditional liberals protected children. However, DeSantis is being criticized for punishing a hotel that exposed children to bizarre sexual practices.
Traditional liberals supported freedom of speech and tolerance. Woke people pride themselves on being intolerant of speech they don't like and shutting it down.
@David
DeleteWell, it is what "liberalism" is today (and the last few decades), as it's become the dominant ideology.
...and it's a very common transition, actually: from demanding freedoms and pluralism when you're an underdog, to brain-dead dogmatism, repressions, and censorship -- once you're in control...
Two farts from the right pollute the com section.
DeleteDavid in Cal,
DeleteNow do religion.
I'll get you started, David.
Delete1. Religion gives people a shield to be mean and cruel, armored in false virtue.
I'd prefer to listen to Tower of Power's "What is Hip."
ReplyDeleteI’d prefer that someone explain what shoulder is.
DeleteIt’s good to define a word, then define to whom it applies. That’s freedom!
