Margin now 2.1 points: This being an alternate Tuesday, we'll be posting a bit later than usual today.
Out in the world of slow vote counting and actual facts, the nationwide popular vote now looks like this, according to CNN:
Nationwide popular vote (to date), 2024
Candidate Trump: 74,989,915 votes (50.2%)
Candidate Harris: 71,794,548 votes (48.1%)
Just for the record:
The victory margin is sliding down toward two points (or less), with something like three million votes still uncounted in California alone. Just for the record, this is the current state of the overwhelmingly massive landslide victory amassed by the candidate who won.
Our general view:
As a general matter, it's good to establish some basic facts before we start writing our novels.

Trump won by barely matching or even losing support vs his loss in 2020, considering population growth, so the point is Trump has no mandate; Trump remains one of our least popular politicians in history, and because Trump has no impulse control, he will likely drag down the Republican Party for his own personal benefit (tariffs, deregulation leading to polluted air and water, letting Putin do whatever he wants, kowtowing to corporate interests, tax cuts for the rich paid by tax increases for everyone else, making America a laughingstock to the rest of the world, etc). It couldn’t happen to better people, bless their hearts.

It is increasingly apparent that this election was determined by three main factors:

3) Republican trickery, such as voter suppression, kicking people off voter rolls, having nearly 3 million ballots rejected using a Jim Crow era law, massive bomb threats to polling stations, etc.

Fake news. Trump was never going to go to prison due to logistical issues. Trump going to prison had little impact on the election, he actually lost support from 2020, when he lost the election. B. Trump wisely did not sign a form for the government to contribute to the cost of the transition team, because it would impose conditions that should be avoided.
Can anyone confirm or refute whether these two stories refer to the same form?

David, I think thse stories do refer to the same required form. Also, I think 212:57's cite is correct.
DeleteIf you're feeling ambitious, you can read a Congressional Research Service report on the transition act here.
DeleteThe bulk of it describes the services available for an incoming president from the GSA. Funding for the transition is a pittance compared to what Trump's big donors can provide, so it doesn't surprise me much that he's not hurrying to sign up for it.
However, the last two pages of this report describe the disclosures and security clearances required by the law, and the Trump team seems to be ignoring them. I'll guess that someone will opine that those requirements don't apply if the transition team foregoes the government money. There could be a fight about it, but it won't get far in the short time before inauguration day.
Today's post from Our Host offers an interesting anchor point for all of the opinionizing we'll see and hear in the weeks ahead. Trump and his team will boast about the "massive landslide" victory they achieved. Everyone else will call it a squeaker.
