WEDNESDAY: All we humans secretly want...

...is a chance to talk about this: We had planned to write, this afternoon, about the remarkable strength of the rhetoric.

The remarkable strength of Jon Ossoff's rhetoric. The remarkable strength of this:

SENATOR OSSOFF (8/16/26): In this White House, they view persistence in deceit as a virtue. You hear me, Atlanta?

And there's something uniquely despicable about lying a nation into war. Treating citizens as fools, and those who serve as pawns.

Aboard the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, they've now been at sea for 240-plus days without a port call. It's a Navy record. And still—and still—

And still, they serve with excellence.

And still, they serve with excellence! God bless the sailors, Marines, aviators and all aboard the United States Ship Abraham Lincoln!

AUDIENCE: [Cheers]

See, they don't expect luxury. They'll endure hardship. But they deserve competent leaders who send them into combat only when necessary, and with decisive clarity of purpose, not fools who lie about the purpose and progress of war.

And while the sailors on the Lincoln fight his war, while he fruitlessly drains our munitions and oil reserves, the president sleeps through his meetings. He golfs, and trades stocks.

See, he doesn’t want to do the job. He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the emir of Qatar.

To watch the speech, just click this. That passage starts at the 7:30 mark.

Good God! "They view persistence in deceit as a virtue?" Especially as delivered, that's a brilliant formulation.

And then, after praising the greatness of us the peopleafter praising the greatness of we who servehe actually delivered this string of stinging insults:

While he fruitlessly drains our munitions and oil reserves, the president sleeps through his meetings. He golfs, and trades stocks.

See, he doesn’t want to do the job. He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the emir of Qatar.

"He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the emir of Qatar?"

"On their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the emir of Qatar?" Wow:

Like waves rolling in when you might even drown, those final twelve (12) words, all by themselves, deliver one stinging insult after another. And the fact that you've never heard anyone else say it that way suggests the possibility that he actually means it!

David Axelrod laments the presence of two widely cited words:

"With Natalie."

In a tweet, he says this:

AXELROD (8/19/26): No one has been more consistently eloquent or incisive in exposing @realDonaldTrump than @Ossoff. The paragraph from his weekend speech that has gotten so much attention was a brutal takedown.

But two words in it, "with Natalie" seemed gratuitous and unnecessary.

They juiced the virality of it, I'm sure. Probably thrilled some in the base, who figured it was just giving Trump a taste of his own nasty medicine.

But they distracted and detracted from the power of the message.

We agree with the words we've highlighted. That said, should Ossoff have included the two words in question?

We can teach it flat or round.

Of one thing you can be sure. Many people "in the base," and certainly in the mainstream press, did in fact hear nothing except those two thrilling words.

It's what we were told, long ago, by a major player inside the Bill Clinton re-election campaign:

It's all about the girl, she (very) sadly said, as the Lewinsky excitement was breaking.

She meant that the national press wanted to talk about nothing elsewere going to talk about nothing else. It's clear from much of the current reaction that many of us the people today are reacting in a similar way.

We'd call that human, not wrong. Meanwhile, there's the enduring madness of the rhetoric favored by Steven Cheung. Let's consider that tomorrow.

  1. Some idiot Dumbocrat pol said some words prepared for him by his consultants, and you get, oh, so excited. Should he have said those two words?! Why didn't he say these five? Won't the public be mesmerized by this or that?

Here, I'll tell you a secret, Bob: nobody cares what politicians say. Especially the Dumbocrat politicians. Nobody is listening.

  2. As others have noted, all over the internet, no one thinks Trump is having sex with Natalie Harp. The problem with Natalie is Trumps' weird relationship with her and her opportunism, unprecedented access to a president, and her own insanity, obvious in this situation. This is not just abnormal but it compromises our government from the top, it should not be happening, and no one near Trump will stop it. Somerby pretends this is about sex. It isn't. It is about the president being too demented to understand his situation, while the rest of the government cannot function as it needs to because of Trump's insanity.

Where is Somerby with all his talk about Trump being insane, when this situation arises and he will not even call it what it plainly is. Trump has dementia, he doesn't know what is happening around him, he is being manipulated and not making decisions himself, and our country is at risk.

Ossof was implying nothing about sex. He said literally that all the president wants to do is travel with Natalie. He said literally that the president is not doing his job as president. Can it be any plainer than that? Somerby pretends sex is involved but this is an 80 year old man in poor health. It is not about sex. For Bill Clinton, sex was involved, which makes that an inappropriate reference. A misleading reference. More misdirection from Somerby, who (as someone the same age as Trump and Bill Clinton) understands how little sex is involved when Trump calls for his Natalie and she comes running to tell him he is wonderful. Is Somerby really that stupid or is he doing more shilling for the right wing?

The right wants this to be about sex so they can complain about the left's attacks on innocent Natalie and ignore what is happening to Trump. That's why THEY have made it about sex. Trump used to just watch hours of Fox News and coverage about himself. Now he is too old for that, so he spends that time with Natalie, who manages to calm his fits of rage and feed his fantasies. Is that what should happen with a megalomaniac who has lost his senses but not his power to rule?

We are in deep shit but Somerby thinks it is about sex. This is clear evidence he is still working for the right.

  3. Here is what Digby said about it:

"I just can’t help but enjoy this story, even though I know it’s pretty petty, all things considered. This from Asawin Suebsaeng at Zeteo is delicious:

[begin quote] It was late November 2024. Donald Trump hadn’t even been sworn back into office yet, and yet he was already busy ordering up the kind of sweeping leak hunts that would come to define much of his second presidency. The president-elect was absolutely livid, three sources with direct knowledge of the matter told me. On Nov. 25 that year, the New York Times ran a story that quoted from a series of leaked “devotional letters” that close Trump aide and confidant, Natalie Harp, had written to her boss. Eyebrow-raising lines included, “You are all that matters to me.”

“I want to bring you joy,” Harp warmly penned, “to feel like we can get through a day without ever having to talk ‘work.’”

Trump, the sources said, was furious about this for days, and ordered advisers to conduct what one of the sources called an expansive “mole hunt” to figure out who leaked the private correspondence – or, “love letters,” as some Trump advisers mockingly called them. The president-elect privately bellowed about how there were a tiny number of people, including himself, who had access to Harp’s letters, and that he considered it a towering “invasion of privacy” for anyone to leak them.

One of the three sources says they were “interviewed” by Trump officials for the informal leak probe, and that they were asked to hand over their phone for inspection. It is unclear if Trump ever found the “moles” responsible. But his days of rage underscored a reality that was about to befall Trump’s Washington: Natalie Harp – a 35-year-old former One America News Network personality who now seems to follow Trump everywhere – was a made woman, protected up on high by the MAGA prince of darkness himself.

To this day, sources close to Trump recount to me how (to put it gently) psychotically overprotective he is of her. In some ways, his attitude towards her eclipses the close relationships he’s had with other aides, including Hope Hicks, who was similarly a source of soothing emotional support for the president during his first term. A conspicuous number of Trump advisers and U.S. government officials I’ve talked to sound genuinely weirded out by the Trump-Harp relationship. TO BE CLEAR: These sources do not say anything untoward is going on, as is often the public innuendo. They just find it all… deeply weird and off-putting. [end quote]

[Digby:] This gets to what I think is the real heart of this story. Ossoff didn’t say anything about them having an affair in his single comment — “He doesn’t want to do the job. He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the Emir of Qatar.” He didn’t suggest anything sexual, but you can bet that creaky old Trump is secretly pleased that people would think that.

But that’s not what this is about.

Of course, the Republicans are staging a patented hissy fit in the hopes that the Democrats will cave as they usually do and will start to apologize and stab each other in the back. (The jury is still out on that.) But the weirdness of this relationship isn’t about sex, although that creepy possibility is out there. It’s about the 80-year-old Trump having this very bizarre sycophant with him at all times, acting as some sort of caregiver and providing access to the president that circumvents all the normal channels. That she seems to specialize in shoveling lies, memes, and fake news to him to ensure his ego is constantly flattered 24/7 is beyond weird.

Ossoff appears to have a good grasp of the attention economy. If the Democrats hold their ground and resist the temptation to react as they usually do to the right’s hissy fit (“don’t call them weird, it’s rude”) it will be a good sign that they understand this media environment and are prepared to meet the Republicans on the field.

    Trump is very, very weird."

  4. So, should Ossof have said "with Natalie" Somerby asks.

The part about "with Natalie" gets to the heart of Trump's deterioration. Even a year ago, Trump would not have given Laura Loomer that kind of access. He wouldn't have treated a bunch of printouts, no matter how flattering, as personal secret papers (reminiscent of the classified documents he was hoarding a few years ago), because he would have known the difference between govt work and his own personal souvenirs. He doesn't now. He doesn't know what is going on in the world or in his personal life. He does the familiar things he used to do, remodeling buildings and listening to people fawn over him, but he is too out of it to function as president.

This scandal over Natalie should become the straw that causes Congress to demand that Trump have a cognitive evaluation by an impartial neurophysician. Ossof intended Natalie's name to be a symptom of what is wrong with Trump, not a sexual slur against either of them. He was pointing out that their relationship and his focus on the wrong things as president (Ballrooms and luxury jets) but not the needs of soldiers at war, shows that he is not doing the job.

Republicans should care as much about Trump's failure as Democrats. Someone has to wake up and do something to put a responsible adult in charge at the top. Even JD Vance would be better than this unstable old man being manipulated by a 35 year old without a security clearance, who goes to all meetings and sits in on all conversations, has access to Truth Social posting and who knows who else she talks to or what she does when not changing Trump's diapers.

Trump's vulnerabilities are the vulnerabilities of our nation.

  5. Emptywheel says, after describing the anecdote about Natalie Harp sleeping in the locker room to stay close to Trump at Bedminster:

"Or, they could be viewed as a measure of the extent to which she will go to ensure she retains her gatekeeper role.

The far right wants to pretend Ossoff’s comment was a slur about an innocent young lady who is in fact a gutter racist who is, at 35, pushing middle age, especially by Trump’s standards. They want to pretend this is a debate about whether the old man with cankles that look like pumpkins is fucking the aide that looks like Ivanka.

And all the while we’re not talking about what it means that anyone with a trusted relationship with Harp could learn anything about Donald Trump, could learn the content of all his meetings, all his messages, all his phone calls, could pass him — and pass on, in his name — any kind of untoward message.

Natalie Harp may be just what the far right wants to pretend she is: A staffer who has gone nutso for her boss, and therefore lavishes the kind of treatment on him that his increasingly fragile ego needs to function in the face of Narcissistic injuries.

But if she were something else, no one would be in a position to know about it."

This is the danger. What if Natalie is not just as crazy Trump admirer but someone with connections to other governments or to dangerous factions within the USA? Her direct line to Trump and his willingness to protect her, his dependence on her, are breeches of security, liabilities.

  6. How can Somerby, a media critic (in his own mind), write how the media loves to follow salacious stories, when they have been working 24/7 with the Republican Party all Summer to distract from the Epstein Files?

  7. Emptywheel talks about Harp before she became 24/7 dedicated to being Trump's gatekeeper. She then described the lack of supervision of Harp's relationship with Trump:

"The first story I unpacked about Natalie Harp was this one, from Marc Caputo, who was and remains exceedingly well-connected with right wing Floridians (Though the first time I mentioned her discussed how unvetted her 2020 Convention speech to Trump was.)

In a story that broke the news that Harp had posted a video promising Trump would bring about a “unified Reich,” Caputo instead focused on her gatekeeping role.

Perhaps more than anyone else, Harp gatekeeps much of what Trump sees on social media and reads in the news.

“IF YOU WANT THE PRESIDENT TO SEE SOMETHING, the best route is Natalie,” says a knowledgeable source who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the internal workings of Trump’s inner team and who has passed information to the candidate via Harp. “Don’t underestimate her importance.”

Much later in the story, Caputo described that Trump’s campaign staffers didn’t supervise Harp."

Others have said that Harp is resonsible for the Nazi and racist memes and articles appearing on Trump's account on Truth Social.

If the fascists lurking on the right have their hooks into Trump, maybe we do have to worry about what might happen after the midterms, and beyond 2028, if the Democrats win the elections. A woman who posts a picture of the Obamas as apes, as a meme that will please Trump (and it seems that it did), is not holding back for fear of embarrassing Trump with socially unacceptable posts. He didn't make her take it down until after there was an uproar about it.

So, it is reasonable to ask who is controlling our president these days, whether Ossof said it directly or hinted at the bizarre relationship to direct national attention to Natalie Harp. Someone needs to focus on her and Trump is not capable of protecting himself or our nation with her opening the back door to Nazis.

  9. If the people in the base heard only those two words, with Natalie, why does Somerby assume they are trivial?

Where is Melania? Why is she not even pretending to be a first lady or wife? What does she think about Natalie? Is this situation ok? I think it is hugely dishonest. If Trump doesn’t have to be president and Melania doesn’t have to be first lady, we the people are abandonned, to who or what? Stephen Miller?

"Should Ossoff have included those words?"

Why wouldn't he? He's not insinuating anything that isn't already widely reported.

Ms. Harp travels with the president frequently. She sits and types his social media posts for him. She leaves adoring letters for him to find. As far as we know, she enjoys this access without holding any official post.

All the major news outlets are reporting on Travels with Natalie. Why shouldn't Ossoff mention her?

    1. Wtf you talking about?

Now, Harp's official title at the White House is executive assistant to the president, which typically denotes a lower tier position that entails managing logistics, scheduling, communications flow and mundane - but vital - secretarial work.

That sounds pretty fucking official to me.

I think this matter is similar. Ossoff makes a series of stinging attacks. He mentions Natalie, and then Natalie is all we can focus on, forgetting everything else.

“ See, this is just a typical relationship between an aide and the young, vigorous president she works for. Who can forget all the times Bob Haldeman jumped into the trunk of Richard Nixon’s limo because he couldn’t bear to be apart from him? (And, again, this does not imply anything sexual; it reads “aide on the memory care floor of a retirement community” more than “mistress.” Trump apologists are implying the latter because it’s more flattering.)”
