Campaign watch: The Times attempts to report on the pope!

Krugman lets fuzzy meet voodoo:
On a journalistic basis, how hopeless—how utterly hopeless—is the New York Times?

Just consider the news report which tops this morning's front page. It concerns the exciting new fight between Donald Trump and the pope.

Even by standards of the Times, the report is journalistically hapless. In the top right hand corner of page one, Patrick Healy starts in the manner shown below, although it may not have been his fault.

Hard copy headline included:
HEALY (2/19/16): TRUMP FIRES BACK AT SHARP REBUKE BY POPE FRANCIS

In his most audacious attack yet on a revered public figure, Donald J. Trump veered into risky political territory on Thursday as he denounced Pope Francis, seeking to galvanize Republicans who worry about border security and appeal to evangelical voters who regard Francis as too liberal.

After the pontiff’s remarkable contention that Mr. Trump “is not Christian” in proposing deportations and a wall with Mexico, the candidate said Francis’ criticisms were “disgraceful” and “unbelievable,” and he contended that the Mexican government had hoodwinked the pope into criticizing him.
The full report runs 1433 words. Incredibly, you've already seen Healy's only attempt to quote what Pope Francis actually said!

Good God, but the Times is a joke! Healy's report runs on and on as various people speculate about the possible political effects of the exciting new fight.

But in the course of all that typing, the Times report makes no attempt to report with the pope actually said. You've seen Healy's only quotation from the pope—a three-word phrase, dropped into the middle of a Times paraphrase.

On line, the Times offers this 1221-word report by Jim Yardley.
It includes a more detailed, though blatantly incomplete, account of what the pope said. There is no attempt to report the original question to which the pope was responding.

That said, Yardley's report didn't appear in the Times hard-copy editions, whether on Thursday or Friday. In hard copy today, the Times led the front page with the thrilling new fight, but it didn't make the most basic attempt to report what the pope really said.

Go ahead—just look around! Our intellectual and journalistic traditions lie in rubble. For another example of what we mean, consider Paul Krugman's new column, which features two colorful phrases from our political wars.

"Voodoo" appears in Krugman's headline. It's worth reviewing the political history of that word, a history which dates to 1980.

During the 1980 Republican primaries, Candidate Bush accused Candidate Reagan of "voodoo economics." But uh-oh! Reagan won the nomination, and he took Bush as his veep.

Bush retracted his colorful charge. "Voodoo" was going mainstream.

Jump ahead 36 years to the present day. Every Republican candidate now practices "voodoo economics" as a matter of course. The term appears in Krugman's headline today because Krugman says that one of the Democratic candidates is now playing that GOP game.

Krugman lists some reasons why he opposes this latest fine mess. In this, the first of his complaints, another colorful phrase appears, a blast from the gruesome past:
KRUGMAN (2/18/16): [A]s the economists warn, fuzzy math from the left would make it impossible to effectively criticize conservative voodoo.
Ah yes, "fuzzy math!" That colorful phrase dates to October 3, 2000, when Candidate Bush accused Candidate Gore of employing "fuzzy math" during their history-changing first debate.

In fact, Candidate Gore was accurately describing Candidate Bush's prescription drug proposal, a relatively new proposal which Bush was mis-describing.

Repeat—Bush was wrong, and Gore was right! But so what? Fleeing his opponent's accurate claims, Bush unloaded this pleasing bomb:
BUSH (10/3/00): Look, this is a man, he's got great numbers. He talks about numbers. I'm beginning to think not only did he invent the Internet, but he invented the calculator. It's fuzzy math! It's the scaring, trying to scare people in the voting booth.
Bush was wrong, and Gore was right. At one point, Gore even said this to Jim Lehrer, completely correctly:

"I mean, it's just, it's just clear. You can go to the [Bush] Web site and look."

Bush was wrong and Gore was right. But by now, our discourse was almost pure narrative. As a result, Bush played the press corps' beloved "invented the Internet" card, then uttered the colorful phrase, "fuzzy math." On four more occasions that night, Bush decried the way Gore was using "the Washington fuzzy math."

Gore had been right, and Bush had been wrong. But the nation's "journalists" would bust their ascots avoiding that fact in the days of punditry which followed.

People are dead all over the world because they were willing to do that.

"Voodoo economics" dates to 1980. "Fuzzy math" became a rhetorical weapon twenty years later. In each case, we're looking at ways our journalistic and intellectual traditions have melted away in what Plato once called "the wickedness of the times." This morning, Krugman alleges another chapter in this long-running tale.

And oh yes! Out on page one, the journalistically hapless Times forgot to quote what the pope really said! What's the only surprise in that front-page mess?

It wasn't written by Amy Chozick! Crackers, imagine that!

Another statement from that debate: Also from Gore that fateful night, as he addressed Jim Lehrer:
GORE (10/3/00): Let me just say, Jim, you haven't heard the governor deny these numbers. He's called them "phony," he's called them "fuzzy." But the fact remains.
In truth, the concept of fact no longer remained. This was the campaign in which the press corps made our new culture abundantly clear:

Facts play almost no role in our discourse. It's narrative all the way down.

Narrative all the way down:
No, it doesn't "matter" that Candidate Sanders said it.

Depending on how you want to score it, it isn't even clear that what he said was "wrong."

Still, we were struck by something Sanders said last night about Sweden and Denmark's great public schools.

His statement isn't necessarily "wrong." It does help display a basic point—quite routinely, our pitiful, broken public discourse is narrative all the way down:
SANDERS (2/18/16): When I talk about "democratic socialist," you know what I'm talking about?

Social Security, one of the most popular and important programs in this country, developed by FDR to give dignity and security to seniors. And it has been enormously successful at reducing poverty among seniors.

When I talk about democratic socialist, I am talking about Medicare, a single-payer health care system for the elderly. And in my view, we should expand that concept to all people.

I believe that everybody in this country should be entitled to health care as a right. And the most effective way to do it is through a "Medicare for all," single-payer program.

When I talk about democratic socialist, I'm not looking at Venezuela. I'm not looking at Cuba.

I'm looking at countries like Denmark and Sweden. And you know what goes on in those countries? All of the kids who have the ability and desire go to college.

And you know how much it costs? It is free. They have child care systems which are outstanding. They have public educational systems which are extremely strong.
Do Denmark and Sweden "have public educational systems which are extremely strong?" It all depends on how you score it! But decades of conservative agitprop are reinforced by such remarks. Truly, in our broken discourse, it's narrative all the way down.

How good are the schools in Sweden and Denmark? Let's take a look at the record!

Over the past twenty years, the world's developed nations have taken part in three international testing programs—the PISA, the TIMSS and the PIRLS.

By conventional reckoning, the PISA focuses on "creative thinking;" the TIMSS focuses on knowledge of basic curriculum. That said, the developed nations, Sweden and Denmark included, participate in both testing programs.

So does the United States. Given the claims you constantly hear, let's take a look at the record:

The PISA tests 15-year-old students in reading literacy, math literacy and science literacy. If you go here and start clicking around, you can learn these things about the most recent PISA results:

In reading, the United States outscored Denmark by an insignificant two points. The United States outscored Sweden by a substantial margin.

In science, the United States scored one point behind Denmark, outscored Sweden by a substantial amount.

In math, Demark outscored the United States by a substantial amount. The United States outscored Sweden by a small amount.

That's the PISA. The United States tends to score better on the TIMSS, which tests fourth-graders and eighth-graders in math and science.

In Grade 4 math, the United States outscored Denmark by a small amount, Sweden by a substantial margin. In Grade 8 math, the United States outscored Sweden by a large margin. Denmark didn't take part.

In Grade 4 science, the United States outscored Sweden and Denmark by fairly substantial margins. In Grade 8 science, the United States outscored Sweden by a substantial amount. Denmark didn't take part.

That leaves only the PIRLS, which tests fourth-graders in reading. In the most recent testing, the United States outscored Denmark by a trivial margin, Sweden by a substantial amount.

Presumably, everyone knows how it sounds when someone gets up in public and says that countries like Sweden and Denmark "have public educational systems which are extremely strong."

Everyone knows what the public hears when it hears statements like that. The public hears the anti-teacher, anti-union agitprop which has been shouted, peddled, sold and yelled for a good many years.

The public hears that our public schools are no good. Out there in TV land, many people thought they heard Candidate Sanders say that last night.

It doesn't seem to be true. Indeed, our schools are much more diverse than the schools in those two utopian lands. Beyond that, we spent several centuries trying to eliminate literacy from one whole part of our population, a legacy which still afflicts us today.

To their credit, Sweden and Denmark have never done something like that. But so what? We tend to outscore them.

Despite our various challenges, the United States tends to outscore Sweden and Denmark on international tests. But you will never hear that said in public, not even by Candidate Sanders.

Our discourse is narrative all the way down. Simply put, we the people aren't up to the task of conducting a public discussion.

Have you ever seen a liberal state these very basic points about our teachers, our children and our schools on the TV machine? How about in an op-ed column? (No, Kevin Drum doesn't count!)

Most often, we're too busy telling the public, but mostly ourselves, how dumb The Others are! Again and again with our own sorry tribe, it's vanity all the way down.

An overview of future work:
Doggone it! Yesterday, we made a bad choice.

In fairness to us, our error involved the faulty judgment of the lover.

In what did our error consist? In our first look at Walter Isaacson's book, Einstein: His Life and Universe, we focused on the way Isaacson starts his Chapter Six.

The chapter begins with this brief paragraph, one we've come to love:

"Relativity is a simple concept. It asserts that the fundamental laws of physics are the same whatever your state of motion."

As a general matter, Isaacson is a very clear writer. His work on Einstein's life is superb. Not so on Einstein's universe. In that particular instance, we've come to love the way he advertises "a simple concept," then proceeds to make a statement which isn't simple or clear at all.

We've come to love that passage and the paragraphs which follow it. Exhibiting the lover's faulty judgment, we decided to feature that passage in yesterday morning's post.

We think that was a bad choice. At this early point in our studies, we should have gone with the simpler passage which appears in Chapter One, a passage which ends with Isaacson making a joking confession:
ISAACSON (pages 3-4): [I]n 1915, [Einstein] wrested from nature his crowning glory, one of the most beautiful theories in all of science, the general theory of relativity. As with the special theory, his thinking had evolved through thought experiments. Imagine being in an enclosed elevator accelerating up through space, he conjectured in one of them. The effects you'd feel would be indistinguishable from the experience of gravity.

Gravity, he figured, was a warping of space and time, and he came up with the equations that describe how the dynamics of this curvature result from the interplay between matter, motion, and energy. It can be described by using another thought experiment. Picture what it would be like to roll a bowling ball onto the two-dimensional surface of a trampoline. Then roll some billiard balls. They move toward the bowling ball not because it exerts some mysterious attraction but because of the way it curves the trampoline fabric. Now imagine this happening in the four-dimensional fabric of space and time. Okay, it's not easy, but that's why we're no Einstein and he was.

"Okay, it's not easy," Isaacson good-naturedly writes. But as he does, he makes an important confession:

No one has the slightest idea what that familiar bafflegab means! We refer to the mandated passage about the trampoline and "space-time!"

Alas! We should have started with that early passage, leaving Chapter Six for later. At the start of Chapter Six, Isaacson moves from bafflegab into a form of argle-bargle. If we want to teach these matters well, we should have kept that passage for another day.

Readers, good morning, and welcome to our new course from the department of Incoherence Studies! We'll be teaching this award-winning course in the weeks and months ahead. We thought we'd take some time today to explain what we'll be doing, and to answer your very particular inquiries about why we're going to do it.

By now, it has become obvious that we the people are incapable, at this time, of conducting a "national discourse" concerning any substantive policy or political topic. And we're sorry, but no:

This inability isn't restricted to members of the "mainstream press" or to the leadership of the pseudo-conservative world. We the liberals have made it clear that we can't function discursively either, absent direction from trusted gatekeepers, all of whom are gone.

We're sorry, but it's blindingly clear. Like the other tribes, we liberals aren't up to the task.

As a young man, Plato withdrew from public life after the rise of so-called "Thirty Tyrants." In the work which lies ahead, we're taking a similar course.

Don't misunderstand! We'll continue to offer "Campaign watch" reports in our afternoon posts. But when it comes to our principal work, we've decided to follow the lead of our slightly more garbled predecessor, who retreated to philosophical work after The Thirty went bad. We've decided to beat a retreat into work which is more fundamental:

Before President Trump decides to start rounding up the intellectuals and even the bloggers, we've decided to outline a long, award-winning course in Incoherence Studies. It's a subject we've been pursuing, in our spare time, for the past forty-plus years.

The topics we examine won't be political topics. Still, before the agents of Trump arrive, we've decided to record the fruits of our years of work.

For that reason, we're going to look at the culture of incoherence, confusion and incomprehension, especially as it exists within branches of academia. We're starting with the incoherence surrounding discussions of modern physics, but we'll be moving to other topics within the "philosophical" world.

We plan to discuss this incoherence within the context of Wittgenstein's later writings. As currently planned, we expect to do four days on Wittgenstein next, followed by another four days on Nova's recent attempt to explain Einstein's famous example about the pair of lightning strikes and the lady on the fast train.

Nova is considered to be one of our smartest news programs. Did anyone who watched its program last November have any idea what the heck they were talking about? Did anyone have the slightest idea what was being explained?

Let's repeat a basic point. The topics we'll be exploring here will not be political topics.

Nothing turns on the alleged incoherence of Nova's presentation. Your GPS will still work in the morning even if you don't understand what Nova's narrator says.

No one gets hurt if you don't understand what type of entity "space-time" is, or if you don't know why you're constantly told to regard it as some type of "fabric." (Look out for the bowling balls!)

Nothings turns on the lofty topics we'll be exploring here! Still, our prevailing culture of incoherence is fascinating, even comical and profound.

"Man [sic] is the rational animal," Aristotle is widely said to have said. Like the gods, we regard that famous statement as perhaps almost comically false.

In the weeks and months ahead, we plan to offer you a great deal. We'll channel the laughter of the gods, the howling dear Homer observed.

We'll also be doing this: Periodically, we plan to interrupt our lofty work with long-form book reviews.

To cite one example, we still want to spend a chunk of time with Ta-Nehisi Coates' recent book, Between the World and Me.

In the familiar old joke, everyone talks about the weather but no one does anything about it. In this variant of that pattern, everyone praises Coates' book, but no one raises a finger to discuss what it actually says.

In truth, nobody cares about Coates' book, or about the children within it. After our first month on incoherence, we plan to spend a couple of weeks puzzling hard about that.

Campaign watch: The unbearable lightness of MSNBC!

Evening Joe, directly followed by Rachel's animal sounds:
The final question of last night's town hall pretty much captured the hour.

Candidate Trump was getting grilled, in merciless fashion, by the hard-hitting Joe and Mika. He was also taking fire from the South Carolina voters who had been selected to throw questions at him.

Now, the hour was almost done. One last voter stood to grill Trump. This is the question she asked:
BRENNA (2/17/16): My question for you is, why did you decide to run for the presidency in the first place?
Let's face it—that was tough stuff! But then, here's the previous question Trump had to endure from one of those hand-picked voters:
JIRAL: Hello there, Mr. Trump. Thank you for being here. My question is, you're facing stiff competition from Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. How do you think you will set yourself apart from those two candidates? And how are you going to go and win the general election against, say, Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton?
Warning! In the future, decent people won't run for office if news orgs like MSNBC let them get savaged this way!

Good God! The sheer stupidity of last night's event may have set a new world record. Joe and Mika let Trump conduct some of the dumbest discussions of substance in the history of our rapidly failing republic.

Meanwhile, where did they get the voters who asked those pointless questions? Presumably, you'd want to pre-screen such questions if you're doing a short, one-hour event. Just a guess, in the form of a question:

Were those questions deliberately picked to assure a soft landing for Trump?

In its usual half-asped way, MSNBC has published this semi-competent transcript of the event. Midway through, the transcript starts losing track of who is actually asking the questions. In its usual half-asped way, MSNBC hasn't posted the transcript on Nexis.

If you choose to read that transcript, you'll be reading some of the dumbest discussions ever conducted on Earth. No society can hope to survive planned corporate dumbness this vast.

That said, Morning Joe isn't the only MSNBC program setting new records for dumbness. An equal-but-opposite Dumbnathon is routinely being staged on the Maddow Show.

How dumb does it get on the Maddow Show? Over the course of the past year, the program has become astoundingly dumb, presumably by corporate design.

How dumb does it get? Last night, the program's visibly troubled star began with her latest review of Jeb Bush's animal noises, which mainly take place in her head.

Drumming her desktop and mugging and clowning, this is the way the show's troubled star began her effort last night, after receiving the throw from the pitiful Joe and Mika. With minor corrections, we're posting the official transcript as it appears on-line:
MADDOW (2/17/16): Good evening. Happy Wednesday. Thanks for joining us this evening.

When Jeb Bush first announced that he was running for president of the United States, there was an unexpected moment, right after he said he was running, when he ended up making an exciting, and I'm pretty sure unscripted, animal noise.

JEB BUSH (R), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I'm a candidate for president of the United States of America.

(CHEERS AND APPLAUSE)

MADDOW: Whoo! Jeb Bush went "whoo" right after he announced that he was running for president of the United States last year. And that was the first sign of what has ended up being an unexpected pleasure in covering his campaign for president.

Without warning and for all sorts of different reasons on all sorts of different occasions, he makes unusual noises, and he makes them a lot.

BUSH: The Twitter universe, there's some heads exploding right now. I can feel it. like doo, doo, doo—

BUSH: Politically, we're going to win when we're hopeful and optimistic and big and broad, rather than grrr or grrrr.

REPORTER: Speaking of which, you know, the whispering campaign has already started that Bush is falling apart, he may not even—

BUSH: Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

REPORTER: You know what they're saying out there.

MADDOW: Nothing else in this presidential campaign is turning out the way people expected it to. The Jeb Bush campaign is certainly not working out the way people expected it to.

But it has become one of the expected things about the Jeb Bush for president campaign that every couple of weeks or so, he unveils a new noise. And today, bingo!

And I actually saw tapes, he just starts— I mean, it's not what he says, it's just the fact that he says it louder and louder and louder and you just have to keep talking through it. MADDOW: Jeb Bush in South Carolina complaining about the Republican presidential front-runner, Donald Trump, but doing it obviously with good cheer.
Did you notice? On the modern Maddow Show, when someone says "blah blah blah," he's making animal sounds!

The program never got much brighter than that last night. But then, it rarely does.

Maddow "covers the campaign" the same way everyone does on cable now—by reading endless bunched of polls and speculating about future outcomes. You will very rarely see her analyze a matter of substance or deconstruct a prevailing narrative. It simply isn't done.

In our view, the dumbing down of the Maddow Show may have been the most striking media event of 2015. As of now, the dumbing continues apace.

On the one hand, it may just be a ratings play, in which Maddow agrees to dumb things down to attract more of us liberals. On the other hand, it's hard to watch this program now without wondering if something is wrong with the mugging, clowning TV star who keeps drumming away on her desk.

At any rate, no society can hope to survive this level of planned corporate dumbness. Our press culture has been moving this way for a very long time. Pitifully, we the liberals have shown few signs of being able to tell. As is always the case, the vast bulk of the fault lies with our "liberal leaders."

INTRODUCTION TO INCOMPREHENSION: Our top professors weren't able to help!

Part 4—The Isaacson 17:
In the vast majority of situations, Walter Isaacson is a very clear writer.

That's why Isaacson's 2007 best-seller, Einstein: His Life and Universe, gives us a window into the culture of incomprehension which surrounds major parts of academic and journalistic endeavor.

(In hard copy, Isaacson's book entered the New York Times best-seller list at number one. It spent fifteen weeks on the list.)

Isaacson is a major American journalist and author. In the words of the leading authority on his life, "he has been the chairman and CEO of CNN and the managing editor of Time. He has written biographies of Steve Jobs, Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein, and Henry Kissinger."

He graduated from Harvard in 1978, after which he went to Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. According to the leading authority, he "became the president and CEO of the Aspen Institute in 2004."

Beyond that, did we mention the fact that, in almost all contexts, Isaacson happens to be a very clear writer?

We mention that fact for a reason. Isaacson's bio of Einstein is very clear, and quite interesting, in the chapters with deal with "Einstein's life." Isaacson presents an interesting theory concerning the way Einstein's rebellious personality informed his transformational scientific work.

He presents his theory very clearly; the work is a pleasure to read. Then again, there are the chapters in which Isaacson explains, or attempts to explain, "Einstein's universe," his revolutionary science.

In our view, the clarity exits the scene at this point. We're thrown back into the culture of incoherence, confusion and incomprehension which we plan to discuss at some length in the exhilarating weeks and months ahead.

The biographical writing is clear as a bell; then we encounter the science. Of a sudden, the writing is clear as mud. For today, we'll offer one tiny example.

Warning to readers! You will be inclined to say that the writing in the excerpt we offer isn't unclear at all. You'll be inclined to think the writing makes perfect sense in the passage in question.

In thinking that, you'll be wrong, oh so wrong. But even this warning may not be enough to keep you from drifting that way.

For today, we're going to skip the early passage in which Isaacson describes "one of the most beautiful theories in all of science, the general theory of relativity" for the first time. He closes that first exposition by good-naturedly saying this:

"Okay, it's not easy, but that's why we're no Einstein and he was."

We'll agree with that assessment; for fuller text, see below. But in that good-natured aside, Isaacson defines his book's basic problem.

Question: Does the science ever get "easy" in the course of this lengthy book? Posing that question a different way, do the scientific chapters in this book ever get comprehensible?

According to the blurbs on the back of the book, the answer would seem to be yes. On the back of our hard-copy dust jacket, six different blurbs appear. They come from four professors, one science writer and the inevitable Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Professor Greene offers the first of the blurbs. Basically, everyone insists that the book is "excellently readable," to quote Professor Holton.

According to Professor Stone, "Isaacson's treatment of Einstein's scientific work" provides "just the right level of detail for the general reader." But readers, it's easy for him to say! He's a physics professor at Yale!

Isaacson is a very clear, engaging writer concerning Einstein's life. In his otherwise capable hands, does the science ever get easy?

We're here to suggest that it doesn't. Consider the start of Chapter Six, "Special Relativity, 1905."

Essentially, the passage we'll post below represents the start of Isaacson's attempt to explain the science. As a connoisseur of such efforts, we love the way he starts, perhaps a bit too much:
ISAACSON (page 107): Relativity is a simple concept. It asserts that the fundamental laws of physics are the same whatever your state of motion.
"Relativity is a simple concept," Isaacson says as he starts this chapter. He then states that concept in a way which doesn't strike us as simple at all.

According to Isaacson, relativity "asserts that the fundamental laws of physics are the same whatever your state of motion." On the surface, that may seem wondrously clear.

As connoisseurs of this sort of thing, we don't think it's clear at all. We'll offer two observations:

First, a relatively minor point: Will general readers have any idea what we're talking about when we cite "the fundamental laws of physics?"

What are these fundamental laws? Do you feel sure that you can name even one? Granted, we're only one sentence into Isaacson's exposition at this point. But just for the record, we're already involved in one possible source of murk, fuzz and confusion.

That's a relatively minor point. A larger question lives here:

Why would anyone imagine or think that the fundamental laws of physics would change in some way depending on his "state of motion?" The general reader probably won't have any idea what these fundamental laws even are. But how fundamental could these laws by if they suddenly "change" in some way when the reader gets out of his chair and walks across the room?

And yes, that seems to be what Isaacson is talking about. As he continues, he fleshes out his description of this "simple concept."

To us, it almost sounds like this fuller passage was written by committee. As we'll show you below, it's possible that it pretty much was. Isaacson's italics:
ISAACSON (pages 107-108): Relativity is a simple concept. It asserts that the fundamental laws of physics are the same whatever your state of motion.

For the special case of observers moving at a constant velocity, this concept is pretty easy to accept. Imagine a man in an armchair at home and a woman in an airplane gliding very smoothly above. Each can pour a cup of coffee, bounce a ball, shine a flashlight, or heat a muffin in a microwave and have the same laws of physics apply. In fact, there is no way to determine which of them is “in motion” and which is “at rest.”

The man in the armchair could consider himself at rest and the plane in motion. And the woman in the plane could consider herself at rest and the earth as gliding past. There is no experiment that can prove who is right.

Indeed, there is no absolute right. All that can be said is that each is moving relative to the other. And of course, both are moving very rapidly relative to other planets, stars, and galaxies.
Isaacson's sentences are short and grammatically correct. At the very least, they resemble lucid writing.

That said, we'd be inclined to regard that passage as a species of bafflegab.

It's possible to read every word and believe that passage is making clear sense. But in our view, the passage isn't making clear sense at all. Indeed, by the time Isaacson writes that one sentence ("Indeed, there is no absolute right.") he barely seems to be speaking English.

As Wittgenstein noted, sometimes with eloquence, it's easy to create conceptual confusion, hard to untangle such webs. In our view, those four paragraphs are easy to read on the surface. But, at least in the way they stand, they make very little clear sense.

In the first two paragraphs, we're told that we're learning a simple concept. We're also told that, in certain types of cases, that simple concept is "easy to accept."

We're then told that a woman gliding along in a jet can bounce a ball or shine a flashlight, just like a man in an easy chair. Again, the writing seems lucid and clear. Still, we have these questions:

Do you have the slightest idea what any of that has to do with "the fundamental laws of physics?" Even now, do you have any idea what those fundamental laws are?

Do you have any idea how those homely examples demonstrate or support the "simple concept" with which we began—the claim that those laws remain the same whatever your state of motion?

Truth? Already, we feel that we're at sea after those first two paragraphs. In paragraph 3, we're suddenly discussing something different—the basic question of what it even means to say that someone is "in motion" or "at rest."

Isaacson's statements here may seem familiar and right. But do you have any idea how we suddenly got to that from our starting point? Do you feel sure that you know what he means when he offers that statement in semi-English: "Indeed, there is no absolute right?"

Why in the world would he say it like that? Already, it seems that he's lost!

Reading that passage, we can choose to glide along smoothly, like the woman in the jet. That said, we'd find it very hard to explain what Isaacson is saying.

We can agree to glide along in the faith that our pilot knows what he's doing. But does he actually know what he's doing? Or is there no absolute right?

A fair-minded person will want to imagine that Isaacson gets any confusion straightened out as his chapter proceeds. We don't think that's the case. But in the weeks and months ahead, we'll examine examples from Isaacson's book, and from other books about abstruse topics—best-selling books which have been hailed by professors and journalists alike as being "excellently readable."

In closing today, we'll make a suggestion. It involves The Gang of 17 Isaacson cites before he starts his book.

As mentioned, Walter Isaacson is a very clear writer. His writing about "Einstein's life" is lucid, clear, intriguing, interesting, sharp. But as with so many others before him, his writing about "Einstein's universe" is incoherent, a jumble, a bit of a tiny large mess.

As he sat in his easy chair, did Isaacson secretly know that? Before he even starts Chapter One, he in effect blurbs his own book, listing an endless array of major figures who made his book more comprehensible and more correct.

We refer to his four full pages of Acknowledgments, a section preceding Chapter One. In that section, Isaacson lists an array of major figures who read the manuscript, especially the scientific passages, making sure that he got everything right.

He cites seventeen different professors, along with five "nonscientific readers" and two teachers of high school physics. He says that quite a few others helped with his text, but for the sake of simplicity, let's leave things at that.

Isaacson doesn't simply list all those names. He devotes a separate paragraph to most of the professors who helped, explaining the service each provided.

Over and over, the physics professors helped him make his text "excellently readable." Beyond that, Isaacson asked the high school physics teachers to "give the book a careful reading to make sure the science was... comprehensible to those whose last physics course was in high school." The five nonscientific readers, several of whom are major names, "made very useful suggestions from a lay perspective on parts or all of the manuscript."

Our view? Out of that effort came bafflegab, a tribute to the difficulty involved in "explaining" modern physics and the inability of us the humans to express ourselves clearly and well.

In the last century, a big-name philosopher discussed the culture of incoherence at substantial length. Next week, we'll spend four days on his work, before returning to the ripples, rips, bends and tears in the fabric of space-time—the topic where none of us seems to have any idea what we're talking about.

For those who would read ahead: The passage shown below comes from Isaacson's Chapter One.

"Okay, it's not easy," Isaacson says. See if you agree:
ISAACSON (pages 3-4): [I]n 1915, [Einstein] wrested from nature his crowning glory, one of the most beautiful theories in all of science, the general theory of relativity. As with the special theory, his thinking had evolved through thought experiments. Imagine being in an enclosed elevator accelerating up through space, he conjectured in one of them. The effects you'd feel would be indistinguishable from the experience of gravity.

Gravity, he figured, was a warping of space and time, and he came up with the equations that describe how the dynamics of this curvature result from the interplay between matter, motion, and energy. It can be described by using another thought experiment. Picture what it would be like to roll a bowling ball onto the two-dimensional surface of a trampoline. Then roll some billiard balls. They move toward the bowling ball not because it exerts some mysterious attraction but because of the way it curves the trampoline fabric. Now imagine this happening in the four-dimensional fabric of space and time. Okay, it's not easy, but that's why we're no Einstein and he was.
Barring Isaacson's closing jest, we'd have to call that passage bafflegab.

No one has the slightest idea what Isaacson means when he refers to "the four-dimensional fabric of space and time." We all can picture that trampoline—but none of us knows how to imagine that "four-dimensional fabric!" Nor does Isaacson give us the tools to do so, or notice that he has failed.

We don't mean to single Isaacson out. This failure dates all the way back to the first appearance of Einstein's work. It's part of a fascinating intellectual culture we'll explore in the months ahead.

Do you plan to vote for Candidate Clinton? If so, that's OK too.

What follows isn't an attempt to assess Clinton v. Sanders. What follows is a chance for you to ponder the journalistic history of the past twenty-plus years.

We're recommending Gene Lyons' new column at The National Memo. If you read only one column this week, we'll suggest that you read his.

Lyons is author of the 1996 book, Fools For Scandal: How the Media Invented Whitewater. In 2000, he teamed with Joe Conason to write The Hunting of the President: The Ten-Year Campaign to Destroy Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Those books are essential histories of the mainstream press corps' strange behavior toward the Clintons during the 1990s. In this morning's column, Lyons recalls a major incident in 1994 in which the press corps began inventing a punishing theme—the notion that Hillary Clinton is a fiendish liar.

Some of us simply won't believe that Lyons' account could be accurate. Until Frank Rich says it's OK to say it, we will simply refuse to believe that any such thing could have happened.

From our own perspective, we'll only say this:

In Lyons' column, he describes the way the press corps invented a lie by Hillary Clinton. Here at this site, we spent years chronicling the way those same people invented lies by Candidate Gore.

We learned one important fact in the utterly fruitless years we spent on that topic. We liberals are cowards and ditto-heads, the emptiest type of camp followers. Here's how it works in our world:

Frank Rich has never said that the press invented lies by Gore, so we the liberals aren't able to say it. We liberals only say the things our tribal elders give us permission to say, and our tribal elders are the very ones who invented the lies which sent George Bush to the White House.

Why did our elders behave that way? We have no idea, in large part because no one has ever asked them. Beyond that, no one ever will! Have you heard of the code of silence? We self-impressed liberals have accepted that code day after day after day.

The story-line which ran through Gore was being invented in 1994. Lyons describes one high-profile incident, but because he isn't Frank Rich, we'll never believe that it happened as he describes or ask ourselves what it might mean.

We love to trash the ditto-heads. But crackers, please! Just look around! The ditto-heads are us!

Early morning escort service agrees to kiss ascot tonight:
"MSNBC Embarrasses Itself Yet Again." So read the headline on yesterday afternoon's post by Kevin Drum.

It's hard to argue with Drum's assessment. He was reacting to this strange announcement by the lowest and strangest of our "cable news" networks:

Joe and Mika will host Candidate Trump in an exclusive hour-long broadcast at 8 tonight!

That's right! Chris Hayes has been told to take the night off. The cable channel's top escort service will bring their early-morning fawning to Trump into the evening hours.

This is a very strange event. Let us count the ways:

For Trump, it means that he'll be appearing opposite CNN's two-night Republican forum, in which he's scheduled to participate tomorrow night.

CNN is airing Carson, Cruz and Rubio tonight, with Trump, Bush and Carson scheduled for tomorrow. By appearing on MSNBC tonight, Trump will be competing against the first of these GOP events. This means that Trump has decided to directly antagonize the GOP leadership again.

Tonight's event is even stranger on the part of MSNBC.

As we've noted several times, the current version of Morning Joe is the most patently phony "cable news" program we've ever seen. Joe's fawning to Trump is strange enough, but Mika's equally passionate fawning to Trump puts this program over the top.

Candidate Clinton is persistently bashed by the strange phony pair in the same faux phony way.

It's hard to watch the current incarnation of Morning Joe without thinking that Mika and Joe are both being paid by Trump. We assume cable programs don't work that way. But the manifest strangeness of Morning Joe has really been making us wonder.

At any rate, Hayes is out on the street tonight. MSNBC's pair of Potemkins will air in his place, accompanied by their love interest in a post-Valentine's special.

MSNBC has always been extremely strange, dating back to its days under Nantucket's own Jack Welch. Tonight, the ludicrous place for pseudo-news is taking things over the top.

Part 3—The science writer's old clothes:
By the winter of 88, something unusual had happened.

In the spring of that year, Professor Hawking had published A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes, a book which became very famous.

By that summer, the book had gone to number one on the New York Times best-seller list. The book stood at number one on that list for a number of months.

This wasn't hugely unusual. Professor Hawking's book wasn't the first of its kind to achieve wide sales. The "Einstein made comprehensible" niche pre-existed this effort.

Indeed, Einstein had written his own "Einstein made easy" book all the way back in 1916. In theory, physicists had been making Einstein easy for a great number of years.

Professor Hawking's book was a massive ginormous best-seller. That said, the truly unusual occurrence was this:

By the winter of 88, two major journalists had written columns in which they said that they didn't understand Hawking's book! Each professed his incomprehension in the Washington Post.

Richard Cohen went first, but Charles Krauthammer was perhaps more colorful. In early December of 88, he started a column like this:
KRAUTHAMMER (12/2/88): There are two great mysteries in this world. First, how did the universe begin? Second, how does a book that attempts to answer that question...become the No. 1 best seller for 20 weeks in a row? Having now twice read Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time," a smash popularization of modern physics, I am preoccupied with the second question and no closer to an answer for the first than I was when I started.
Krauthammer didn't get it! Lacking any sense of decorum or shame, he attested to his own incomprehension, even after two readings of Hawking's book, whose status as a best-seller he also couldn't explain:
KRAUTHAMMER: Incomprehensible in a very interesting way, Hawking's language is simple. The syntax is clear. The exposition is careful, at times even graceful. With the exception of E=mc2, now a staple of subway walls, not a single equation appears in the book. (Hawking was persuaded of the well-known rule of thumb: every equation cuts your sales in half.)

If given enough attention, every sentence makes sense. But when you have registered all the sentences, you realize in the end that you understand nothing. It is not Hawking that is beyond comprehension, but modern physics.
Krauthammer said he understood nothing. Breaking every rule in the book, he applied an unusual word, "incomprehensible," to Professor Hawking's writing itself!

Krauthammer writhed in the face of his incomprehension. A second columnist, Richard Cohen, had beaten the scribe to this topic.

Way back in the early summer, Cohen had claimed that he didn't understand the world-famous best-seller either. He started by damning the famous professor who had produced this maddening work. But soon, he challenged another group—the professor's willing enablers.

Cohen cited the legion of critics who had sworn, up and down, that the book was transplendently easy. Breaking every rule of journalistic decorum, he even named some names:
COHEN (6/26/88): Damn you, Stephen Hawking. Damn you and your book, A Brief History of Time, which rests, at this writing, on the best-seller lists and which has been praised as lucid, accessible...A scientific book written for the layman, an important book about the beginnings of the universe, of time and matter and the unified theory that would combine those of quantum mechanics and relativity to explain everything: everything, that is, but how the layman can possibly be expected to understand this book.

[...]

I read book reviews, and in this case most of them started, as did the one by Jeremy Bernstein in The New Yorker, by saying how easy this book was to read. "Charming and lucid," Bernstein said, although his review was anything but.

Ditto The New York Review of Books. "Hawking's prose is as informal and clear as his topics are profound," wrote Martin Gardner, the author of several books on science. He then outdid Bernstein in proving that the informal and clear could be reduced to sludge. Newsweek weighed in with a profile of Hawking. It noted his use of "imaginary" time, adding that " 'Imaginary' is used here in a technical mathematical sense—meaning the square root of a negative number..." What???

And so it has gone, each review proclaiming that the book made the incomprehensible comprehensible, even though the review itself was incomprehensible. Only one critic I read (Michiko Kakutani in The New York Times) admitted that the book contained "several dense passages...which this reader...found impossible to follow." But even she praised the work, while concluding, "It is hard for the lay reader to grasp all of Mr. Hawking's arguments." Hard? Try impossible.
Playing the role of straight-shooting straight-talker, Kakutani had admitted to finding a few passages hard. "Try impossible," Cohen groused, creating a dispute with the high-ranking Times reviewer we can't hope to settle today.

Each of these columnists wrote in a lightly comical vein. In the process, they drew attention to an intriguing aspect of the culture of incomprehension which surrounds this type of book.

Was Professor Hawking's book "charming and accessible?" Was his prose really "as informal and clear as his topics are profound?"

In the weeks and months ahead, we'll try to answer such questions. For today, though, we'll only say this:

Every "Einstein made easy" book will be reviewed in the manner described by a gang of camp followers. More precisely, the books will be reviewed this way as long as the authors of the books are certified insider figures.

So long as the author is a made person, a gang of enablers will leap into print. They will insist that the book in question is so lucid that even a schoolchild will come away from its pages with a firm understanding of the simple, easy-to-understand topics Einstein and others exposed.

As long as these Einstein-made-easy books are written by establishment figures and published by establishment houses, establishment reviews will swear on a stack of atomic numbers that they make Einstein easy. The books' dust jackets will swarm with blurbs assuring the reader of this.

So it was on the back of Professor Greene's The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time and the Texture of Reality, where a collection of blurbs praised the accessibility of his previous easy-to-understand work, The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory.

Reviews from six major publications explained how easy-to-understand the earlier book had been. "The Elegant Universe is compulsively readable," New York magazine said in one of the blurbs. "Greene threatens to do for string theory what Stephen Hawking did for black holes."

All major establishment books of this type will be greeted with claims of this type from established reviewers. In the weeks and months ahead, we'll assess the extent to which these claims have been accurate.

Polite reviewers are eager to say that they understood every word. In closing, we should note one other group whose reactions support our journalistic/academic culture of incoherence and incomprehension.

We the people will often insist that we understood every word! In the winter of 88, one such reader scolded Krauthammer in a lengthy letter to the Post which was more than a bit irate.

The Post ran the letter beneath this heading: Who's Afraid of a Little Physics? The letter writer seemed quite sure that she understood Hawking's book:
LETTER TO THE WASHINGTON POST (12/10/88): Charles Krauthammer's op-ed column of Dec. 2 promotes one of the problems plaguing the education of children today. Mr. Krauthammer's article analyzes Stephen Hawking's popular book, "A Brief History of Time." After reading the book twice, Mr. Krauthammer concludes it is "incomprehensible." I, too, have read Mr. Hawking's book and found it quite understandable. Mr. Hawking has done an excellent job of explaining in clear language how the universe began, Einstein's general theory and other complexities.

Mr. Krauthammer says he understands "and if asked can readily repeat" what Mr. Hawking writes about string theory or the fact that the universe had a finite beginning yet has no boundaries. He then asks, "But what does it all mean?" In effect, Mr. Krauthammer is saying that physics has become too difficult to understand, so why should anyone try? Many schoolchildren adopt this attitude. If something looks difficult, they decide they will not learn it.
The professor's best-selling book was written "in clear language." Like the nation's many reviewers, the letter writer found it "quite understandable"—understandable all the way down!

The letter continued from there. "If I, a substitute teacher, can understand, surely someone of Mr. Krauthammer's ability, if he tries, can assimilate what Mr. Hawking's words mean." So the writer said at the end of her screed, which warned about what will happen to the kids of today if Krauthammer's approach takes hold.

In such ways, we the humans affirm our prevailing culture of incoherence, confusion and incomprehension—an intriguing culture which gets its start inside the walls of our loftiest institutions.

Campaign watch: Brother Hayes seems to take it back!

And then, he changes his stance:
Midway through last evening's show, Chris Hayes seemed to take it back.

He seemed to acknowledge that he had erred at the start of Friday night's program. For our report on Friday's groaner, you can just click here. For TPM's report on his semi-retraction, you can just click this.

(Warning! TPM didn't bother producing an accurate transcript of the remarks in question, the remarks Bill Clinton made in Memphis last Thursday night.)

We say Hayes made a semi-retraction for the following reason. First, he acknowledged that he'd made an error. (Everyone does.) But then he took it back!

This is the start of his presentation. He seems to acknowledge his error:
HAYES (2/15/16): On Friday night, we reported on comments [Bill Clinton] made during a stop in Memphis, Tennessee and we cited him as saying about Hillary Clinton and President Obama, quote,

"She's always making something good happen. She's the best change maker I've ever known. A lot of people say, 'Oh well, you don't understand. It's different now. It's rigged.' Yeah, it's rigged because you don't have a president who is a change maker."

Now, a number of people pointed out—quite a few actually, and rightly—that Clinton's full remarks changed the context of that point and that he actually went on to defend President Obama against his critics. So here it is in full.
At this point, Hayes played the full tape of what Bill Clinton had actually said. Hayes had already seemed to say that people who criticized his previous report had actually done so "rightly."

Hayes played the full tape of what Bill Clinton said. But then, after playing the tape, he had to go and say this:
HAYES: Now, we did not characterize Clinton as trashing the president or slamming him as some others did. We said he went off message, which is arguably true. But here's the important thing. In cutting off that clip in the editing, we didn't allow you the chance to make that judgment for yourselves in the full light of context. We shouldn't have done that.
Hayes may not have been wrong after all! "Arguably," his claim had actually been right!

We're sorry Hayes made that remark, which was total BS. In fact, Bill Clinton did not go off-message in Memphis that night. In fact, he was directly on message. He was suggesting that Candidate Sanders, or some of his supporters, have been saying bad things about Barack Obama.

Bill Clinton said nice thing about Obama that night. His insinuations were pretty clear about those who have criticized Obama.

Personally, we'd be happier if Bill Clinton didn't do that. We also would have been happier if Hayes had simply acknowledged his howling error and had said nothing more after that!

Campaign watch: A special day for TV's Willie Geist!

Keeps kissing the aspic of power:
Early this morning, it finally happened.

We can't link you to the videotape; the Morning Joe staff didn't post it. But this morning, in the program's first hour, we're almost certain we heard it:

This was the morning when third banana Willie Geist Jr. referred to "the Democrat Party" [sic] as he snuggled his nose up the ascots of power. It's part of his regular turn as Joe Scarborough's number two sidekick, behind the relentlessly servile Mika.

No, really—"the Democrat Party!" At long last, after all these years, that's what the asp-kisser said!

Geist is often called Willie Haskell-Geist because of his many obsequious aspects. The son of Bill Geist of CBS News, the youngster was raised in New Jersey, then went to Vanderbilt, hoping to adopt the upper-class cultural norms which would enable him to be even more servile to those with the wealth and the power.

Until this morning, Geist's most horrible day on the TV machine had almost certainly been December 12, 2006. In those days, he was playing sidekick to Tucker Carlson, who had a nightly show on MSNBC.

On that horrible Thursday evening, the boys' discussion turned to the Oscar chances of the Al Gore climate change film, An Inconvenient Truth. Working in the sidekick role, Haskell-Geist introduced the topic.

Things spun downhill from there:
GEIST (12/12/06): Tucker, I have got some real news for you. Al Gore seems intent upon not losing another close election, so he is everywhere these days, campaigning for on Oscar for his global warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth.

The former vice president has been on Oprah, the Tonight Show, the Today Show and every show in between, plugging the film's DVD release. On Saturday, he`ll host a nationwide network of 1,600 house parties to watch and discuss that movie. The Oscar nominations are due out late next month...

CARLSON: Have you seen the Gore movie?

GEIST: No, I have not seen it.

CARLSON: I suspect it’s a shade, what’s the word? “Pedantic.”

GEIST: Yes, I didn’t see it because I had paint to watch dry that weekend, so I couldn’t get to it. But Hollywood would like nothing more than to help propel him to the White House. So don’t be surprised if gets it.

CARLSON: Good point!
That had always been Willie Jr.'s most horrible outing. These days, he serves as Scarborough's number-two echo—and this morning, he even referred to "the Democrat Party!"

Wealth and fame are major prizes across the landscapes of network and cable "news." These prizes tend to attract the wrong people. They also tend to ruin such decent folk as may stumble into cable or network jobs.

Morning Joe continues along as one of cable's all-time hottest messes. As if Joe and Mika weren't bad enough in their role as apparent Trump surrogates, we can also say this on many mornings:

Let's extend our "hooray for Hollywood" theme! On days like today, we can also tell them that Willie boy is there!

Willie is kissing the asp of success. Everyone else on the program agrees to pretend there's nothing to look at as Mika and Willie Jr. keep showing up to perform their obsequious roles!

Friend, did you understand the front-page report in last Friday's New York Times?

Part 2—Our tolerance for incomprehension:
As we noted yesterday, Professor Greene's 2004 book, The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time and the Texture of Reality, went to the New York Times best-seller list.

So had his previous book, The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory, when it was issued in paperback. So had earlier books of this type, including several massive best-sellers by Professor Hawking.

In part, Professor Hawking's sales were driven by his substantial fame. Also, by the widely-bruited idea that his books would be easy to understand for us, the average shlubs.

That said, did anyone actually understand what Professor Greene wrote in his best-selling books? Did we average shlubs really understand Professor Hawking's books?

You can sign us up as skeptics. To understand our skepticism, consider the featured news report from the front page of last Friday's New York Times.

The report was written by Dennis Overbye (no relation), a long-time science writer for the Times. In 2014, Overbye was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Explanatory Writing based on what the Boston Globe called "his authoritative illumination of the race by two competing teams of 3,000 scientists and technicians over a seven-year period to discover what physicists call the 'God particle,' " otherwise called the Higgs boson.

Last Friday, Overbye wrote about another major event in the world of physics. His report was 2600 words long. It was placed in the top right-hand corner of the New York Times' front page.

There was a type of history behind this lengthy report. It bore the kind of colorful headlines the Times had famously used in 1919 when another prediction by physicist Albert Einstein had turned out to be right.

That said, did anyone understand last Friday's lengthy report? Underneath a colorful headline, Overbye started like this:
OVERBYE (2/12/16): WITH FAINT CHIRP, SCIENTISTS PROVE EINSTEIN CORRECT

A RIPPLE IN SPACE-TIME

A team of scientists announced on Thursday that they had heard and recorded the sound of two black holes colliding a billion light-years away, a fleeting chirp that fulfilled the last prediction of Einstein's general theory of relativity.

That faint rising tone, physicists say, is the first direct evidence of gravitational waves, the ripples in the fabric of space-time that Einstein predicted a century ago. (Listen to it here.) It completes his vision of a universe in which space and time are interwoven and dynamic, able to stretch, shrink and jiggle. And it is a ringing confirmation of the nature of black holes, the bottomless gravitational pits from which not even light can escape, which were the most foreboding (and unwelcome) part of his theory.

More generally, it means that a century of innovation, testing, questioning and plain hard work after Einstein imagined it on paper, scientists have finally tapped into the deepest register of physical reality, where the weirdest and wildest implications of Einstein's universe become manifest.
Did anyone understand that? We were only three paragraphs into a lengthy report which would run 57 grafs in all. Already, though, weren't we lingering on the edge of a bottomless pit of confusion?

According to Overbye, physicists now had the first direct evidence of gravitational waves, defined as "the ripples in the fabric of space-time that Einstein predicted a century ago." That said, how many readers had any familiarity with the concept of "space-time," as opposed to the more familiar concepts of "space" and "time?"

How many readers knew what it meant to refer to "the fabric of" space-time, let alone knew what it meant to say that this "fabric" had been proven to contain "ripples?"

Tell the truth! Even here, in paragraph 2, haven't most of us crossed into the land of marginal comprehension? And good God! For most of us, didn't our incomprehension deepen when we were told that we live in "a universe in which space and time are interwoven and dynamic?" A world in which space and time are "able to stretch, shrink and jiggle?"

How many readers had any idea what any of those statements might mean? How many readers had any idea what it means to be told that space and time are able to jiggle?

By the way—can space and time jiggle on their own, each in its own separate way, without reference to the other? Or can space and time only jiggle as "space-time," the previously-mentioned conglomerate which very few New York Times readers could discuss, comprehend, picture or imagine in any serious way?

Whatever! By now, we would suggest that most readers were already lost in type of a "bottomless pit," before they even had a chance to wonder what that concept might mean in the current context.

Bottomless pits are known to exist in the realm of magical writing, but are there really "bottomless pits" in outer space? In what way could such pits actually be "bottomless?" How many New York Times readers would have any real idea?

Do people understand what they're reading when they read work of this type? As Overbye continued, the question arose again.

In paragraphs 11 and 12, readers encountered the various statements we highlight below. LIGO is an acronym for the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory:
OVERBYE: The discovery is a great triumph for three physicists—Kip Thorne of the California Institute of Technology, Rainer Weiss of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Ronald Drever, formerly of Caltech and now retired in Scotland—who bet their careers on the dream of measuring the most ineffable of Einstein's notions.

''Until now, we scientists have only seen warped space-time when it's calm,'' Dr. Thorne said in an email. ''It's as though we had only seen the ocean's surface on a calm day but had never seen it roiled in a storm, with crashing waves.''

The black holes that LIGO observed created a storm ''in which the flow of time speeded, then slowed, then speeded,'' he said. ''A storm with space bending this way, then that.''
Do you know what it means to be told that "the flow of time speeded, then slowed?" For ourselves, we can picture certain things. Does that mean that we actually know what this statement means?

Beyond that, we all can picture what it means when we're told that various objects "bent this way, then that," perhaps in a very high wind. Do we know what it means to be told that "space" did that? Do we have the slightest idea?

Twelve paragraphs into this lengthy report, we will guess that most Times were far out at sea, caught in some very strong breezes. Soon thereafter, Overbye began providing some basic background about the things Einstein said a hundred years ago.

Our advice: Prepare yourself to understand nothing of what's being said:
OVERBYE: When Einstein announced his theory in 1915, he rewrote the rules for space and time that had prevailed for more than 200 years, since the time of Newton, stipulating a static and fixed framework for the universe. Instead, Einstein said, matter and energy distort the geometry of the universe in the way a heavy sleeper causes a mattress to sag, producing the effect we call gravity.

A disturbance in the cosmos could cause space-time to stretch, collapse and even jiggle, like a mattress shaking when that sleeper rolls over, producing ripples of gravity: gravitational waves.

Einstein was not quite sure about these waves. In 1916, he told Karl Schwarzschild, the discoverer of black holes, that gravitational waves did not exist, then said they did. In 1936, he and his assistant Nathan Rosen set out to publish a paper debunking the idea before doing the same flip-flop again.
According to the equations physicists have settled on, gravitational waves would compress space in one direction and stretch it in another as they traveled outward.
Presumably, every Times reader can picture "the way a heavy sleeper" might "cause a mattress to sag."

(Presumably, we're talking about the weight of the sleeper's body, not the depth of his slumber.)

We all can picture that! That doesn't mean we have any idea what it means to be told that "matter and energy distort the geometry of the universe" in much the same way.

We all know what a mattress is. We don't know what "the geometry of the universe" is! For that reason, it's very hard to picture the latter behaving in the manner of the former. Homer would have skipped this simile, knowing it wouldn't help.

Similarly:

We all can imagine a 300-pound sleeper rolling over and making his mattress jiggle. That doesn't mean we have any idea what it means when we're told that "a disturbance in the cosmos," whatever that might be, "could cause space-time to jiggle" in much the same way. Judged by any normal standard, few Times readers had the slightest idea what Overbye's statement might mean.

We've looked at three chunks of the lengthy report which topped the front page of Friday's New York Times. At the point where we've left off, we're twenty paragraphs into a 57-paragraph piece. Very few readers have any idea what Overbye's talking about.

We don't mean to single Overbye out. He's a 71-year-old MIT grad who presumably knows a lot of math and science.

That said, he works in a field where we the humans display a large degree of tolerance for massive incoherence, confusion and incomprehension. Indeed, an entire industry is built around the promulgation of work of this type, in which we average shlubs are told that modern physics has been made so easy-to-understand that even a schoolchild can get it.

In closing, let's state the obvious. It doesn't actually "matter" if Times readers didn't understand Overbye's front-page report. It doesn't exactly matter if readers only think they understand the contents of Greene and Hawking's best-sellers.

Nothing much turns on our tolerance for this type of incomprehension. Our cell phones will still work for us in the morning even if we can't explain why.

That said, large branches of contemporary academics are built upon this type of incomprehension, of which we the people are extremely tolerant. And uh-oh!

In the last century, a big-name "philosopher" seemed to say that it has ever been thus.

Campaign watch: Kevin Drum wonders about Trump voters!

We notice a road not suggested:
Kevin Drum has a lengthy post today in which he wonders about the motivations and attitudes driving the many Trump voters.

We think his post is interesting for what it says, and also for something it doesn't.

Drum starts by saying the mighty scourge of offshoring ain't all it's cracked up to be. He then offers his basic nugget:
DRUM (2/15/16): Just to be crystal clear: This isn't a matter of wondering why cool logic doesn't prevail among the electorate. What I'm wondering more about is this: what are the lived, ground-level issues that are galvanizing Trump's supporters? The job market simply doesn't seem to be in bad enough shape—or in different enough shape—to be responsible for a sea change in attitudes. So what is it?
As he proceeds, Drum offers three possible explanations for all that galvanization. "But I still think there's something missing here," he says at the end of his post. "I'm just not sure what."

Drum remains puzzled about Trump voters as he ends his post. That said, here's something he doesn't do. He doesn't suggest that liberals, progressives and Democrats should look for ways to ask Trump voters about their views and motivations.

How do Trump voters see the world? It wouldn't be easy to find out, but it rarely seems to occur to our tribe that we ought to try.

As we noted last week, it's very, very, very rare to see a Trump voter interviewed on Our Own Corporate Liberal Channel. Across the liberal world, though not with Drum, a basic attitude often seems to obtain, in which we try to avoid degrading ourselves by talking to Those People.

In our model, we tell Those People they're bigots and racists. We then proceed to tell them how they ought to vote.

Our tribe may sometimes have retrograde notions about The Way You Make Progress Happen. Aside from calling everyone racists and xenophobes, we also tend to subscribe to the slightly peculiar ideas advanced in this piece from yesterday's Washington Post Outlook section.

The author of that piece, Yoav Fromer, "teaches politics and history at Tel Aviv University." We'll get to his piece by the end of the week. It strikes us as basic, very important, dating back through many years.

Campaign watch: Bill Clinton was saying some very nice things!

Until Chris Hayes stepped in:
Last Thursday night, Bill Clinton was saying some very nice things about Barack Obama.

Granted, some politics was maybe perhaps involved. For one thing, former president Clinton was speaking on behalf of Candidate Clinton, who, as you know, is his wife.

That said, Bill Clinton, speaking in Memphis, was explaining a basic problem President Obama has faced. He said Obama deserved more credit than he sometimes gets because of this particular problem.

As Clinton made these nice remarks, the crowd applauded--a lot. You can watch the tape here:
BILL CLINTON (2/11/16): She’s always making something good happen. She’s the best change maker I’ve ever known.

A lot of people say, "Oh well, you don’t understand. It’s different now. It’s rigged." Yeah, it’s rigged—because you don’t have a president who is a change maker who, with a Congress who will work with him. But the president has done a better job than he has gotten credit for. And don’t you forget it!

(APPLAUSE)

Don’t you forget it! Don’t you forget it!

(CONTINUED APPLAUSE)

Because—

(LOUDER APPLAUSE)

Look. Don't you forget it.

Let me just tell you. I’ve been there, and we shared the same gift. We only had a Democratic Congress for two years. And then we lost it.

There's some of the loudest voices in our party say, it’s unbelievable, say, “Well the only reason we had it for two years is that President Obama wasn’t liberal enough!”

Is there one soul in this crowd that believes that?


AUDIENCE: No. No.
Ever since the end of his second year, Obama has had to battle a Republican Congress who won't work with him, Clinton said. He then ridiculed "voices in our party" who say Obama lost the Congress because he wasn't liberal enough.

There was a certain political tilt to the former president's remarks. That said, he was saying nice things about Obama—until Chris Hayes stepped in.

Right at the start of last Friday night's All In, Hayes played tape of Clinton's remarks. But he did one of those hideous mid-sentence "edits," making it look like Clinton had actually been dissing Obama!

Good grief! As he started his show, Hayes noted that Hillary Clinton has been criticizing Candidate Sanders for being critical of Obama in the past. He then said that Bill Clinton had gone off-message—and he doctored the Memphis videotape like this:
HAYES (2/12/16): Now if that's Clinton's strategy, she might want to make sure her husband is in the loop. Bill seemed to go a bit off message last night in Tennessee, while campaigning for his wife.

BILL CLINTON (videotape): She’s always making something good happen. She’s the best change maker I’ve ever known.

A lot of people say, "Oh well, you don’t understand. It’s different now. It’s rigged." Yeah, it’s rigged—because you don’t have a president who is a change maker.
Full stop! Hayes cut the videotape of Bill Clinton right there. He made a face about what Clinton had said, then moved to a different topic.

That's one of the worst edits we've ever seen. Just watching the tape of Hayes' show, as you can do here, it's obvious that Clinton has been cut off in mid-sentence. And uh-oh! The edit completely changed the meaning of what he said.

It's a type of dead-stop, mid-sentence edit that used to be fairly common on the Maddow Show, though only to distort the things that Republicans said. In fairness, though, the Maddow Show doesn't seem to feature this type of edit any more.

(Olbermann used to edit BillO this way. It was all for the good of the team!)

Over at Mediaite, Tommy Christopher did the original critique of this presentation by Hayes. His judgment? "This is an edit so egregious, it rivals the worst in dishonest political ads, and surpasses them."

Christopher goes on to say this: "I have nothing but affection and respect for Chris Hayes, so I’m happy to assume that this was the work of some overly-zealous producer and Hayes was too busy to check it."

Everything is possible! It will be interesting to see if some sort of correction is offered tonight. That said, there's no excuse for "failing to check" an edit like that, especially if you plan to open your program with it.

Unfortunately, Hayes has sometimes displayed a tin ear for this sort of thing. In the immediate wake of Benghazi, he quickly threw Susan Rice under the bus in line with GOP propaganda. One week later, he had to take back the things he had said.

Last summer, he oohed and aahed about the "bombshell" the New York Times had delivered through its ginormous news report about the "scary uranium deal."

In our view, that report may have been the most ludicrous bit of hard-right agitprop the Times chose to run with all year. To the tin ear of Brother Hayes, it seemed like a bombshell.

Last Friday night, he did it again! Christopher might consider the wisdom of The Original and Great Carter Family, who famously lamented a certain type of disappointment and self-delusion:

"I woke from my dreams, my idol was clay.
All portions of love had all flown away."

Who knows? Maybe it was just bad staff work! We'll see what gets said tonight.

INTRODUCTION TO INCOMPREHENSION: What Liebniz believed!

Part 1—Brian Greene cues the search:
On the morning of Wednesday, February 3, we enjoyed a few brief moments of true amusement.

We were thoughtfully sitting inside a local Starbucks. We were perusing Brian Greene's 2004 best-seller, The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time and the Texture of Reality.

(According to the leading authority, the book in question "is the second book on theoretical physics, cosmology, and string theory written by Brian Greene, professor and co-director of Columbia's Institute for Strings, Cosmology, and Astroparticle Physics." It went to number 3 on the New York Times chart. Citizens, we're just saying!)

We've perused Greene's book off and on since its publication. Speaking of time, it was roughly 7 AM when we came upon this statement by Greene, located on page 30:

"The great German philosopher Gottfried Willhem von Liebniz, who was Newton's contemporary, firmly believed that space does not exist in any conventional sense."

No really—that's what the book said! We emitted low mordant chuckles, of a type which more commonly emerge from the world's greatest Zen masters.

(As we walked home that morning, neighborhood dogs twisted their heads as they examined our weirdly grinning visage. If we might borrow from FDR, we welcome those neighborhood dogs' twisted heads! We regard their twisted heads as a badge of honor.)

According to Greene, Professor Leibniz believed that space "does not exist in any conventional sense." Actually, no--he firmly believed it! Once again, considering that word, we went to the land of Zen masters.

Full disclosure—we've encountered this Liebniz fellow before. Full disclosure:

In the fall semester of 1967, we failed our semester-long course on Kant. Or did Kant perhaps fail us? Back in 1998, we asked that question in an award-winning cover story for Capital Style magazine. The glossy magazine is now defunct, though through no doing of ours.

Did we fail Kant, or did Kant fail us? The question has never been answered! At any rate, we had to take a make-up course in the summer of 1968.

We worked full-time on the dorm crew, with an hour off each morning to attend to our book learning. The course we took bore this title:

"Descartes, Spinoza and Leibniz"

We later joked, concerning that course, that we learned little Spinoza and less Leibniz, drawing on Jonson's famous jibe about Shakespeare's knowledge of Latin and Greek. At any rate, we passed that course, we believe with a D, and stayed out of Vietnam.

Many years later, there we were, in a local Starbucks. We were reading about the man who interrupted our daily cleaning of dorm rooms. And sure enough:

According to Professor Greene, the fellow in question had firmly believed that space does not exist in any conventional sense! As we chuckled, we mordantly came to see that we had been right all along.

According to Leibniz, space doesn't exist in any conventional sense! This seems to suggest that space does exist in some sense. It just doesn't exist in a conventional sense!

Why did we chuckle that morning? Perhaps because we'd also read this, on the previous page:
GREENE (page 29): Einstein once said that if someone uses words like "red," "hard," or "disappointed," we all basically know what is meant. But as for the word "space," "whose relation with psychological experience is less direct, there exists a far-reaching uncertainty of interpretation." This uncertainty reaches far back: the struggle to come to grips with the meaning of space is an ancient one. Democritus, Epicurus, Lucretius, Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle, and many of their followers through the ages wrestled in one way or another with the meaning of "space." Is there a difference between space and matter? Does space have an existence independent of the presence of material objects? Is there such a thing as empty space? Are space and matter mutually exclusive? Is space finite or infinite?
"Is there such a thing as empty space?" No, really—that's what it said!

("We prove it thus," we imagined ourselves saying, flawlessly drawing on Johnson's rebuttal of Bishop Berkeley. In this, our latest thought experiment, we imagined ourselves kicking inside a discarded refrigerator carton—and failing to stub our toe! For context, see today's postscript.)

Is there such a thing as empty space? While we're at it, is it true that space doesn't exist in any conventional sense?

The early chapters of Greene's best-seller are filled with such statements and questions. We know—you think we're making that up. But this is the very first paragraph of the best-selling book:
GREENE (page ix): Space and time capture the imagination like no other scientific subject. For good reason. They form the arena of reality, the very fabric of the cosmos. Our entire existence-everything we do, think, and experience—takes place in some region of space during some interval of time. Yet science is still struggling to understand what space and time actually are. Are they real physical entities or simply useful ideas? If they're real, are they fundamental, or do they emerge from more basic constituents? What does it mean for space to be empty? Does time have a beginning? Does it have an arrow, flowing inexorabiy from past to future, as common experience would indicate? Can we manipulate space and time? In this book, we follow three hundred years of passionate scientific investigation seeking answers, or at least glimpses of answers, to such basic but deep questions about the nature of the universe.
Greene doesn't want to know if space and time are physical entities. He wants to know if they're real physical entities. Also, what does it mean for space to be empty? Allegedly, science is still struggling to understand that.

Inevitably, Greene is instantly asking this, right at the start of his second paragraph, as he continues directly:

"Our journey also brings us repeatedly to another, tightly related question, as encompassing as it is elusive: What is reality?..." (Greene's italics)

Professor Greene wants to know what reality is! It's a tightly related question, as encompassing as it is elusive.

For centuries, philosophy students have suspected that statements and questions like these may not make any sense. In the last century, a major "philosopher" came along to say that these secret schoolboy suspicions were basically right all along!

(Traditionally, schoolgirls have had enough sense to stay away from those courses.)

Readers who tend to defer to authority will tend to insist that we're surely being unfair to Greene. They'll assume that Greene makes sense of these statements and questions as his book proceeds.

We're here to suggest that this just isn't true. Joining hands with the great Zen masters, we're going to let you use Greene's book (and several others) as an introduction to the incomprehension which rules large parts of our intellectual culture.

Unquestionably, Professor Greene knows contemporary physics—but can he "explain" it? Can he make "theoretical physics, cosmology, and string theory" comprehensible to us, the average shlubs, the way a string of obedient reviewers will always say about best-selling books like his?

This week, we'll be starting an exploration of the fabric and texture of the reality behind a string of questions like the question we've just posed. On Friday, we'll offer an overview of the work which will emerge from the new pavilion within whose unfinished empty spaces we've typed this morning's report.

The refutation of Berkeley: In Boswell's famous Life of Samuel Johnson, the story went exactly like this:

"After we came out of the church, we stood talking for some time together of Bishop Berkeley's ingenious sophistry to prove the non-existence of matter, and that every thing in the universe is merely ideal. I observed, that though we are satisfied his doctrine is not true, it is impossible to refute it. I never shall forget the alacrity with which Johnson answered, striking his foot with mighty force against a large stone, till he rebounded from it, 'I refute it thus.' "

Johnson refuted Berkeley thusly. Citizens, we're just saying.

Conclusion—The world's greatest moral tradition:
Here at the 18-year old Daily Howler, excitement runs high concerning the change of life which is currently scheduled for the start of the week.

In the past 18 years, we've conclusively proven that we can't have nice things as part of our national discourse. Now, we're ready for an incomparable shift in focus.

Today, though, we make a key point: Gainesville, Virginia is full of great kids! Specifically, we refer to the 7-year-old second grader described in today's Washington Post.

If we might borrow from Bill Clinton, the era of the lemonade stand is over! The second-grader of whom we speak has started a GoFundMe page to equip public school classrooms in Flint with "hand sanitizer dispensers, plenty of refills and disinfectant wipes"—items needed "because the kids [in Flint] were afraid to use the tap water to wash their hands."

One school, Eisenhower Elementary, has already been fully equipped. Other schools will follow.

Based on the Post's report, we're going to guess that seven-year-old Isiah Britt got very lucky in his choice of parents, one of whom is paraphrased telling the Post that her son "has always showed empathy for others."

Many, many, many children spill with that empathy stuff, some at seven years of age. Indeed, when we read what Isiah Britt's mother said, we thought again of that statement by Dr. King:

"You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve."

"Everybody can be great," Dr. King said. "Because everybody can serve." "You only need a soul generated by love," he said at the end of his statement.

That said, let's switch gears for a second. Have you heard the one about the 100,000 New Hampshire voters who are Islamophobic, sexist, misogynistic fascist supremacists?

As we noted yesterday, we liberals were told that familiar old tale on Wednesday evening's All In. Not that there's anything wrong with it!

Can we talk? Dr. King was part of one of human history's greatest religious and moral traditions. He didn't start that awesome tradition. Astoundingly, it was already part of the world a large group of oppressed people made.

We liberals rarely mention the greatness of the world those people made. Indeed, when that astounding tradition emerged again last year, we the various northern liberals knew what to do:

We tried to hush it up!

Last year, 2015, is now being widely described as "the year of the liberal." For our money, the single most remarkable element in that long, embarrassing year was the massive dumbing-down of the Rachel Maddow Show, the emblem of contemporary white corporate pseudo-liberalism.

The dumbing down of that cable show was extreme and bizarre last year. This dumbing down went completely unnoticed by us the liberals, who constantly insist that we're the smart brilliant nuanced insightful thoughtful ones.

The massive dumbing down of that program, mixed with its reflexive dissembling, wasn't the only journalistic embarrassment of 2015. We're still amazed by the conduct of the New York Times, including its ginormous, gong-show report about the "scary uranium deal."

The fruit of a deal with a right-wing hack, that ginormous report was an overt journalistic embarrassment. In that case, it wasn't that we the liberals didn't notice the clownishness of the Times report. On one of our corporate cable programs, two major liberals oohed and aahed about what a "bombshell" it was!

Truly, we're hapless, beyond any help. Partly for that reason, we'll be adjusting our principal focus next week. But first, we wanted to offer a final homage to that great moral tradition.

The religious/moral tradition in question is one of world history's greatest. When Dr. King arose from that tradition, which he proceeded to extend, he attributed some of his thinking to Gandhi. But he also spoke, again and again, of "the love ethic of Jesus."

(Dr. King was a Christian. For ourselves, we don't have any religious or cosmological views, but it's easy to see the greatness of the moral tradition Dr. King ascribed to that "ethic.")

The tradition Dr. King extended isn't the world's only moral tradition. No one is required to view it any particular way.

That said, it's one of the world's history's greatest traditions. Dr. King is revered around the world because of the way he expressed it through the conduct of his life.

Last summer, that tradition was enacted again, in astonishing ways, in the wake of the shootings in Charleston. But you know how we liberals are! Up here in our northern preserves, our various entitled assistant professors moved to put the Charleston families down.

Don't listen to those country cousins, our thought leaders helpfully said.

Our associate professors rushed into print to tell us to stop the forgiving! Last year being the year of the liberal, it was the least they could do.

We liberals! In the past year, it became quite clear that we love it when our cable stars dumb it down. We love being handed their simple-minded, embellished stories, complete with their facile tribal accounts of perfect heroes and perfect tribal villains.

Something else became clear last year. It became completely clear how much we love to loathe. We liberals seem to love, lurve, loave our highly pleasing tribal hatred. For this reason, experts and scholars are now calling last year "the year of liberal loathing."

We liberals! We rarely invite American adults to take pride in the astounding moral tradition which somehow, in the face of our history, was brought to life on these shores.

It's one of world history's greatest traditions, but we almost seem to prefer tribal loathing. It's clear that our "thought leaders" do.

We're constantly invited to loathe by our assorted cable hacks and our assistant professors! Indeed, our thought leaders seem to like it best when we get to loathe 100,000 folk at a time.

Good grief! Our professors don't like the love ethic of Jesus, as Dostoyevsky foretold.
